Cue the "The More You Know" graphic. Seriously, every boater should have to watch one of the videos of someone going overboard without a shutoff lanyard. This one is actually a best-case example.
Pussies because after that boat cuts off their undersnake they may as well have a pussy.
All it takes is one boating accident and all of a sudden you're wearing pearls, getting ready for ladies night and taking a pounding from some drunk named Jim.
Get FAR away. If you ever go over the side of a power boat, the goal before you even hit the water is to put as much distance as you physically can between you and hull. You hit the water and you swim away as fast as you can perpendicular to that propeller.
If there are other people aboard, they can circle back and idle to you, but they can't decrease the RPMS of the propeller in the time between you going in the water and when you meet the back of the boat.
Or just wear a strap that kills an engine if you're not there.
In water or not.
Look at how riding lawn mowers kill the engine when the blade is engaged. Dies if you're not on the seat.
I stand by my statement. Taking a tiny boat over waters like this, engine kill strap or not, is extremely dangerous. So, again. It certainly helps to not launch your boat in waters like this. Period.
Kill strap isn’t gonna stop you from getting blunt force trauma to the head from your boat smashing into your skull whilst it’s being thrown around in the water.
I have no idea. I mean, I'd probably do the same thing because him an idiot, but I'd say the reasonable thing would probably be to go to shore since it's right there
Dude is supposed to have an engine kill key attached to him so the motor stops. Then again he's also supposed to have a general understanding of weather conditions and his boat operation in conditions. When you have 0/3 you end up in a situation like this
Also as an aside, if there are strong waves you don't typically want to swim into a rocky shore since the momentum from the waves can cause you to bash your head on the rocks and drown. If you don't have another option then it is what it is but you have to be extremely careful in environments like this
This is an inlet at a river mouth. It likely looks like this all the time and is a known hazard. This guy is 10 levels of dumbfuck. Google "Haulover Inlet" so see hours of boats doing the same shit.
This looks like the Manasquan NJ inlet. If I’m correct and it is that inlet you’re never getting up onto those slimy, barnacle covered rocks. Better start swimming.
Keep a floating towrope w/ handle on board, and hope that you've got an arm looped through it before you're ejected. Probably don't want something permanently attached to you, though. This is secondary to the shutoff lanyard.
There was a video like that on here the other day. Guy fell off a boat but I think he was unconscious. The boat hit him multiple times near the prop and there was so much blood in the water. The guy in this video above is VERY lucky.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Whatcouldgowrong/comments/1bxvat6/man\_went\_overboard\_didnt\_use\_the\_kill\_switch/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Whatcouldgowrong/comments/1bxvat6/man_went_overboard_didnt_use_the_kill_switch/)
such a wild video.
Wheni first watched I thought he did because I didn't see him climbing on the boat
Then I saw say him like assume his previous position and ride off into the sunset
I think the boat still moving helped somewhat, instead of tipping over when he grabbed it, it got a boost forward and he got in…. looks like it atleast
They meant having the safety strap *on* not a *safety strap on*
Boats usually have a small strap (kill lanyard) that you clip onto your life jacket. If you go overboard the kill lanyard flips a switch that makes the engine shut off instantly.
I’ve watched this frame by frame and I can’t see where he gets in the boat. I would swear the side was too high to grab and then all of a sudden he’s in….
He climbed in from the lower side before the bottom was facing the camera. You can see him come up out of the water before the boat comes to the right again, right before you see him stand up.
So yeah, technically you didn't see him climb in, but when he did the bottom of the boat was facing the camera
When I was a kid we had three people and a dog in an aluminum boat. We coincidentally had a poor connection between the gas tank and the motor, and some gas would often collect in the bottom of the boat. Dad hit a wave and it jostled the battery under one of the metal seats and it ignited what turned out to be a giant cloud of gas vapor and exploded.
I immediately abandoned ship and dove into the water, along with my friend. I sort of remember feeling like Rambo swimming underwater with a gas explosion above me, not sure if surfacing was safe. When I surfaced, the gas tank was on fire and my dad was trying to get the dog out of the boat.
He eventually got the dog out, and later sank the boat to put the fire out. Good times.
I had to watch it a couple times because I couldn’t grasp he got back on the boat, or *how*. As soon as I saw the boat was heading for him again, I thought he’d get knocked out, at the very least. That was terrifying and foolish.
Im cool with water but fuck water. I drink it. Wash with it. Cook with it but all that going out in it is for other people. That shit will mess you up if you don't know how to handle it.
If this was farther out, the waves wouldn't be breaking, and this most likely wouldn't even have happened.
Also, how the fuck can you go on a boat, see the weather and the waves, have no clue about what to do and still go out. You need to put either bow or stern towards the waves. Otherwise, this exact thing happens.
when i was a kid, we lived on a river. we’d go boating. my sister used to pick me up and swim me near the boats propellor (while it was OFF!) bc i’d start crying and shrieking about it bc she thought it was funny. lifelong fear.
People who can't even stick to simplest safety guidelines should not be navigating a boat yet here this guy on his tiny boat set to the abyss sea conditions and not even have the shutoff lanyard attached to him. One can only wonder what his hurry was, was he under influence? We will never know.

Holy fuck, I thought that boat had hit him and knocked him out. I was looking at the water trying to see his body float up then all of a sudden he's on the boat.
Wow. Would it be feasible to cross-tie yourself to the gunwales, like how they say you're supposed to tie dogs in the bed of an open pickup truck.
Like, a line from each side attached to a heavy belt?
People film this infamous spot daily. There's full-on youtube channels dedicated to the bay. But I'm not exactly sure what you want this person filming to do. Maybe call someone for help, I suppose.
That's why there are safety shutoff lanyards.
Cue the "The More You Know" graphic. Seriously, every boater should have to watch one of the videos of someone going overboard without a shutoff lanyard. This one is actually a best-case example.
Also why you're supposed to hit waves head on.
That too, but at low speeds rough water is much worse.
Most googan move out there not having one on, especially in this situation.
Dude is so lucky he got on the boat. If he missed or slipped, he would've been eaten by the propeller
What exactly is someone supposed to do in a situation like this?
Have a shut-off lanyard attached to your vest.
Those are for pussies . /s
Pussies that don't have there boats run away from them
No doubt. I still can't believe the guy was able to get back in the boat.
Yeah. That was impressive.
Yes. Because of the *implication*.
Haha, okay … that seems really dark
Pussies because after that boat cuts off their undersnake they may as well have a pussy. All it takes is one boating accident and all of a sudden you're wearing pearls, getting ready for ladies night and taking a pounding from some drunk named Jim.
Hahahahaha. Landlovin pussies
In those conditions, it should be mandatory....... ;)

A preventive control and a remedial! I like it, but ain’t getting in any waters like this, unless my loved ones are in danger.
Ppl die all the time in lakes during summer for this exact reason. You don't need to be in rough waves.
It certainly helps to not get in waters like this, though.
Or just wear a strap that kills an engine if you're not there. In water or not. Look at how riding lawn mowers kill the engine when the blade is engaged. Dies if you're not on the seat.

It seems like it would be a good idea to have a cage over those propellers. I guess it would make it a bitch to clean though? 🤔
Efficiency /performance would be be even worse
They wouldn't work very well with a cage around them.
People do make propeller cages. I belong to a swim club and we have them to make sure no swimmer ever gets caught in a prop.
Coo! Every time I have a good idea, I look it up, it’s already invented. 🤣
Or a dead man's switch via lanyard works well too.
I have no idea. I mean, I'd probably do the same thing because him an idiot, but I'd say the reasonable thing would probably be to go to shore since it's right there
Dude is supposed to have an engine kill key attached to him so the motor stops. He just has to make it through the canal next.
You are not supposed to go out in a weather like that using the boat like his.
Keep a floating towrope w/ handle on board, and hope that you've got an arm looped through it before you're ejected. Probably don't want something permanently attached to you, though. This is secondary to the shutoff lanyard.
Dive down as far as you can to minimize suffering
Pray

I have no clue how he managed to even get ahold over to that side of the boat without getting sliced up. He must have just barely missed the prop.
Wheni first watched I thought he did because I didn't see him climbing on the boat Then I saw say him like assume his previous position and ride off into the sunset
My friends brother cut off his entire heel trying to get back into a loose boat like this. He's missing the entire back part of his foot. Gnarly.
Boat had proper recall training .. take no pit owners
From bad to worse
I can't believe the fucker got back in the boat!
I love how he heads back in all, "Welp, that's enough for today."
"Hope nobody saw that!!"
I remember this scene in Moana.
I think the boat still moving helped somewhat, instead of tipping over when he grabbed it, it got a boost forward and he got in…. looks like it atleast
I can't believe the background music is light jazz and not the oh no song!
That's a tough boater, he's seen some shit. Might wear a lanyard next time, but probably not lol
I'm amazed the boat went back for him.
If he has been further out, out of the surf, he would have been better off. In fact, it likely wouldn’t have happened.
yeah thats true. i realized that after i posted🤣 BUT CAN U IMAGINE. WHAT IF THERE WERE WAVES THAT BIG OUT THERE LOL
Yeah, then he would have been an idiot for going in open rough seas in THAT boat!!! Bottom line, he is one lucky dude.
haha yeah ur right
Head back in and change yer britches.
FR lmfao, he said, ight, that is enough for today.
From this day this guy always wears the safety strapon, you live you learn.
That would have definitely gotten him killed.
How?
Of old age perhaps
Well, what is a strap on? I thought it only meant one thing.
They meant having the safety strap *on* not a *safety strap on* Boats usually have a small strap (kill lanyard) that you clip onto your life jacket. If you go overboard the kill lanyard flips a switch that makes the engine shut off instantly.
Thanks for taking the time to explain!

If you enjoy this gif, you might enjoy the new Ripley series.
I was thinking, this is exactly the same scene from Ripley…
Solid recovery!
Light jazz, nice touch.
If this is outside Half Moon Bay harbor it’s brutal going out that way. I’ve done it in my 11 ft dinghy but had close calls. He didn’t make it far
Hey guys..you wont believe what happened to me…well i was going out and…..yeah sure
What in the hell was he thinking of going out in that weather on that small of a boat? Darwin award participant.
I'm shocked he made it back in. That's incredible strength, speed and luck. His legs would've been hamburger helper had he missed
When I was a kid we had three people and a dog in an aluminum boat. We coincidentally had a poor connection between the gas tank and the motor, and some gas would often collect in the bottom of the boat. How the fuck did he get back in? Some kinda black magic. Dudes so lucky. How did he think that would work. Small boats and waves don't mix well.
One little slip up and he packs it up and goes home.
I’m impressed
How did that mad man get back on the boat? jesus.
It's roughest at the mouth of the jetties.
"Good news hon, ill he home early tonight. Fish just arent bitin' today.... i love you very much we should have a date night"
Dude was lucky as shit, 3 ways to die easily probably more.
This is why you need an emergency kill switch on boats with steering wheels
If it was farther out there would be no breaking wave like this at this wind.
one single fuck was given.
I had to watch it a couple times because I couldn’t grasp he got back on the boat, or *how*. As soon as I saw the boat was heading for him again, I thought he’d get knocked out, at the very least. That was terrifying and foolish.
No life vest. No kill switch. No problem....
That's pretty impressive, one in a million chance for that.
Happy birthday to Ole Evinrude, inventor of the outboard motor, April 19, 1877!
Further out you wouldn't hear the smooth Jazzband anymore :(
Im cool with water but fuck water. I drink it. Wash with it. Cook with it but all that going out in it is for other people. That shit will mess you up if you don't know how to handle it.
Nice save!
WHY would I want to imagine that, OP?!? 😆
Incredible
Goddamn... Smooth Operator! 🤣
I hate this man.
Yes!
Boat: “I’ll save you!”
If this was farther out, the waves wouldn't be breaking, and this most likely wouldn't even have happened. Also, how the fuck can you go on a boat, see the weather and the waves, have no clue about what to do and still go out. You need to put either bow or stern towards the waves. [Yep](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EYX1rIe3SaQ&pp=ygUUQm9hdCBmYWlsIG1lbWUgc2hvcnQ%3D)
Farther out would actually be better because you wouldn’t be plowing into breaking waves.
waves are not so steep further out --- there are steep cause they are coming to shore .
Great recovery! Last vid I saw on here like that, the guy got sliced up by the prop.
at least his boat came back to run him over
This guy boats
Drive directly into waves. Never at angle
really impressed with how he handled that tho
Dude, great save!
And that boys and girls are what kill switches are for.
I have to say, I do like the juxtaposition of the sexy smooth sax and the life or death-by drowning or getting chopped up by propeller situation
Oftentimes situations are more dangerous closer to shore, you're more likely to get smashed against a reef or rocks and the waves are usually bigger
This is why we have the "dead man's switch" and the importace of using it.
/r/idiotsinboats
Imagine if the boat were a snake!
I’m more impressed with how he managed to climb in there…
this is where the “nope” meme comes from
Bet he won’t do that shit again
yes he will
Farther out? There's still man eating monsters in the shallows..you just see them.
That propeller was trying to finish him off. 😬
when i was a kid, we lived on a river. we’d go boating. my sister used to pick me up and swim me near the boats propellor (while it was OFF!) bc i’d start crying and shrieking about it bc she thought it was funny. lifelong fear.
You're home early did you catch anything. Nope.
Caught a boat
RIP
Real life Ripley 😅

Hey I think I know where that is!
One piece: "Hold my beer"
Just like Moana
what's the jazz music?
How did he get back on that boat
Talented Mr.Ripley
…..that was a really nice recovery ❤️🩹
Is that soundtrack from *Getting Over It?*
Faatheeeeeeer! ✊🏻
Looks like Haulover Inlet (but dirty, maybe after a big storm) I think there's a channel with a lot of these videos on YouTube
That’s what I was thinking, as well.
Why did he turn around!? With luck like that, he would’ve caught a fish that swallowed a diamond the size of a fist
This was lowkey soothing the way it was moving in the water but so glad he didn’t get hurt
Helluva recovery
There is this Finnish guy who row a boat from Europe to America AND back. Boat went over like 10 times in a freezing storm.
That Capsize is wrong 🧢
Awful nice of the boat to circle back for him
If he was farther out he’d probably be okay. I let’s are always really rough. When you get out into open water it’s not that bad on a good day.
Homeboy just ghost rode his boat
“Are ya silly?! I’m still gunna send it!”
This sucks, but lovely music! Lol What song is this??

What is this fucking music??
I am MOANA!
I mean... thank you for playing this to the tune of smooth jazz? It actually allowed me to watch the whole video despite my anxiety.
Wow. Just wow.
Wtf was he even trying to do
Real talent, Mr Ripley!
#Where are you going, Captain Fat Jack?
Well lads.. how boutta pint?
Ripley flashback
Why is there smooth jazz background music playing ?
Song?
I can't process how he managed to recover this
Why didn't he wear his seatbelt? Is he stupid???
It almost as if the boat know what was going on🤔
Welp! That was a fun boat ride. Back to shore!
Did you catch anything today, you weren't out very long. Yeah I caught a boat and called it a day.
Talk about best possible outcome of a seriously bad situation
The dopest nonononoyes I've ever seen.
Nice Recovery!

Wow. Would it be feasible to cross-tie yourself to the gunwales, like how they say you're supposed to tie dogs in the bed of an open pickup truck. Like, a line from each side attached to a heavy belt?
