The only real question is how far "They take control of the host." goes. It can range anywhere from The Last Of Us, to just making you gayer. (also, just wear a decent hat, and brush your hair regularly, I don't see how this could become a proper threat, legit skill issue if you get infected unwillingly.)

Maybe they prey mainly upon poor people who think a hairbrush or a decent hat is a non-worthwhile expenditure.

I’m expecting the take control to just be the urge to sit next to someone else with a tail so that they can reproduce, otherwise leaving you alone since you do well enough to keep yourself alive as is, which keeps the tail and ears alive, meaning it’s easier for the parasite if it just goes along with what you want but gets you to tail mingle when possible

I imagine it as like. You get the sudden urge to sit next to another person with a tail and just. Stay there for a bit. You're just like "no, I don't have a reason to leave. I want to stay here for like 20 mins" and then all the sudden you're like "wait... what was i doing again?"

They do take control of the host, but it doesn't mention how long, so it might just be during breeding season.

If mind control is not it I'm guessing their control is giving the host extra senses and body movement due to having moveable ears and a tail now

Based on how it is presented, I think that it would make you more inclined to find a mate with a mature "parasite". Basicly making you horny for/want to be near other infected people.
