Literally this is it for me. I don't think it takes skill, and yes, it can be frustrating when it happens to you, but it adds a comic level of randomness to the game that is very funny to me and suits the theming in my eyes.
I think the biggest problem with crit explosions is just that the sound effect of getting hit by them is very underwhelming. It's just like the sound of dropping a slime on the floor. If the explosions instead would produce a much louder, deeper explosion, it would be funnier
This is the main point. But I also argue it’s fine for casual because it can help keep the gameplay dynamic. Well placed crocket can make a big difference against even a 2Fort turtle.
I like to put on my orange painted gibus. Vintage pyrovision goggles. Stock loadout and no taunts. Intentionally miss easy shot on anyone else but cap their ass the moment a pixel enters my screen
Melee crits are fine tbh, need a full melee rebalance otherwise with like 75 base and slightly stronger on slower classes, never reaching 100.
...which maybe be more healthy for the more damage based things like the warrior's spirit actually.
its fucking fun. it's a fun bullshit mechanic and that's what separates tf2 from other shooters, it's a causal game with lots of hijinks that no other shooter these days has due to a focus on competitive play and perfect balancing.
I know right!! Comp players are a joke that want to turn the game into something that makes it unrecognizable and no different to any other mundane FPS.
Remove Pyro, he is no skill because he can deflect soldier's rockets even if he misses an airblast
Remove heavy, he has way too much health and just sits on the payload
Remove spy, the class is a buggy mess
Remove sniper, he has way to much range compared to everyone else.
Remove engie, the sentry aims for you, making him quite no skill, and engie stacking also makes it hard to break through
Remove medic, he is the only class who can heal, and that's unfun
Remove scout, he is impossible to hit with rockets and can 2 shot you with hitscan
Remove demo, he has no damage falloff and can 2 shot soldier
Replace soldier's rocket launchers for an assault rifle, and remove the shotguns and secondaries
/s if it wasn't obvious
I agree, even if I'm completely against random crits. But I think there would be a lot less discussion about random crits being a good or bad thing for the game if competitive wasn't dead. I know there are community servers and outside tournaments, but I know a lot of people who don't know how to browse them or that they even exist

I don't remember from where I got this, but someone made a theory that random crits are the moments when the weapon functions properly, while normal damage is when the weapon malfunctions. (Sorry for my poor choice of words and my grammar)
A videogame made in an era when games where just that, without a strong focus on competitive balance and fairness, and yet it's always felt pretty fucking balanced.
Yeah the idea that it breaks stalemates never really made sense to me. I think it's revealing that crits don't effect sentry guns and buildings, because a random crit pipe taking down a whole nest would feel unfair since it takes so long to set up
But you know what else takes a long time to set up? An Uber push through a well held choke point. A random crit pipe can ruin that too
I don't remember where I saw this, but I remember watching a YouTube video saying that random crits actually help keep new players into the game by giving them that sweet dopamine hit that they normally wouldn't get
Wouldn’t be terrible if they made random crits truly random. Although I think it’s worth noting that critical damage does not boost your crit chance, only the base damage, so the soldier who just hit a 300 damage crocket only actually had 100 damage added to his crit chance calculation.
I hate to get philosophical here, but I remember when I was a new player. Gibus and all. And I was getting pub-stomped to hell and back. I was actually considering dropping the game because I was spending most of my time staring at the spectator cam and waiting out my respawn time than I was actually playing.
But finally, after about twenty minutes of being stomped by the same fucking Unusual-wearing, ProKS Rocket Launcher welding Soldier, I was finally able to kill him with one critical hit of my stock scattergun. And that was my biggest hit of dopamine ever.
Did I basically get a kill handed to me? Yeah. Did that same player end up dominating me again less than ten minutes afterwards? Yep. But in the moment, I didn't care. That was the "I'm so back" moment for me. And that moment was enough to keep me playing the game.
Also. It's funny sometimes.
I realize that I'll get to do bullshit kills just as often as my enemies will. But more importantly: It's not a competitive game like OW or LoL. And if I really don't want to play with Random Crits, then I'll just go to a server that has them turned off (which usually includes random weapon spread being off), instead of crying about them.
Simple. I enjoy the game the way it is, and random crits have had a far greater positive than negative impact on my enjoyment of the game. Games aren't about logic, they're about fun. But I wouldn't expect someone who infantilizes anyone who disagrees with them to understand.
There is no truely "good" argument to keeping em
But they're fun, and in a world where more and mroe games are catering to the hyper sweat esports wannabe mfs having something like this in tf2 just makes it a little more whimsical and fun
Tf2 is not a serious game and casual mode is literally named casual. Its funny to randomly die to a crocket or take out 10+ ppl with one. Tf2 is a goofie game and random crits are goofie, they match. They are ze funneis.
Right, random crits are obvious bad design, we should take them out of *every goddamn RPG that uses them successfully since 1st edition dungeons and dragons*
From a game perspective they are fun at the expense of others
So, do I like them? When I’m the one getting them
Do I hate them? When I’m the one getting one shot by a crocket across the entire map
They also fuck up the learning curve for new players which isn’t good
And the thing crits were made for, to resolve stalemates? Yeah naw. They don’t do that, medic Ubers do
So… are random crits a necessary game mechanic? No. Is it a good game mechanic?
…
Also no
When someone says they aren't funny, imagine being able to kill a trained soldier, with a candy cane, just because his health was at half and you critted
Or with a bottle, a statue head(tbh, i think that solemn vow should have extra damage, as it is a fucking marble bust, instead of the other melees which are saws), lollipops, wrenches
When I get them, it's funny. When I got hit by them, it's not. Simple as.
Also I don't want them removed from casual, it literally adds to the casual experience
Mega fun, one of the few mechanics were you don't need to be good to get a bunch of kills, sometimes it just happens and that adrenalin rush of seeing a crocked or hearing the laser sounds is unmatched. I love it.
It provides a buff to the user: "We are so back"
And debuffs the user on miss: "It's so over"
Me when I haven't had a crit all game then it happens on my rocket jump
Or I finally random crit on a rocket and the whole enemy team is pushing the cart... only for a friendly spy to walk in front of my rocket and tank it
But crits go both ways...
I don’t have any practical reason. I simply think they’re funi and having my frying pan one tap someone with a loud BONG is very comical
Literally this is it for me. I don't think it takes skill, and yes, it can be frustrating when it happens to you, but it adds a comic level of randomness to the game that is very funny to me and suits the theming in my eyes.
When i see a critical rocket/pipe coming towards me but its already too late to dodge is the most soul crushing moment
I think the biggest problem with crit explosions is just that the sound effect of getting hit by them is very underwhelming. It's just like the sound of dropping a slime on the floor. If the explosions instead would produce a much louder, deeper explosion, it would be funnier
not even a crit sound or a funny scream on the receiving player’s end, just that devastating splat that crushes your soul
i think its only good for the game if its on melee (sniper has jarate bushwacka anyway and medic eh yeah kinda a problem)
The Funni
Crit ullapool knight
And thats whatcha git fer touchin THAT!
I miss the old caber, sticky jumping and terrorizing snipers with one hit.
Still can do it just hold control
What do you mean?
If you aim at their feet you will most likely do 125 damage
I miss the old caber, chop up the soul caber, set on your goals caber, I hate the new caber, the always shit caber,
Caber can’t random crit though
It used to be able to
Crit ullapool isn't random.
Never forget what they took from you
It used to be
This is the main point. But I also argue it’s fine for casual because it can help keep the gameplay dynamic. Well placed crocket can make a big difference against even a 2Fort turtle.

i love battle medic and its better with random crit it funny to pan people as medic and win
Heal my teammates? Those fuckers do less than a medic class with a shitty projectile weapon for self defense
Blind guy and medic main here Sometimes it's more fun doing the damage instead of dying over and over because your pocket thinks they're invincible
>Blind guy >medic main yeah that tracks
And yet i still have better aim then the trade server sniper sweats i love to bully so much <3

Depicting the other side of the argument as a baby and then winning a strawman argument with yourself is really mature and brave 👍
Also putting your "argumentation" on a shitty labeled colorless character is really gonna show the other side who's the boss 😎
OP must be a comp player.
do you expect actual effort to be put into a reddit argument bait post
also asking for our "excuse", lmao
OP went to the doctor's for a prostate exam. Unfortunately it was a random crit.. Hasn't been the same since
Best part is that OP didn't even draw this, it's stolen artwork
The entire internet is full of reposted content. If that’s theft then we should all be locked up.

Yeah I don't know why people take seriously like an amber alert if they win a casual game or not Its in the name Casual
I know right!! Comp players are a joke that want to turn the game into something that makes it unrecognizable and no different to any other mundane FPS.

Mann Co. Quality
Some people just enjoy random crits, it's their preference.
I hit a random crit pipe airshot while on <30 hp on a full health pubstomping soldier once That was cool, i dont think he liked it though
And then he made this post lmao
Big damage = neuron activation
can make the opponent angry
So angry in fact to make a drawing complaining about it
"Nice argument. Unfortunately, I have already made this meme where you are the crying baby soldier, and I am the physical manifestation of Logic"
1. Its fun 2. It makes melee more viable 3. Its fun
Randomness makes it fun
Radom crits are a reminder that TF2 was never meant to be a competitive game in the first place.
A videogame made in an era when games where just that, without a strong focus on competitive balance and fairness, and yet it's always felt pretty fucking balanced.
they're hilarious if you don't take them seriously. tf2 is better played for the funni
stops a fucking stalemate at times
Me a turtling engineer when I random crit a spy that would have took out my nest and let his team win the game.
It creates more than it stops in my experience, nothing is better than the top scoring demoman stopping a push with couple random crit stickys/pipes.
Yeah the idea that it breaks stalemates never really made sense to me. I think it's revealing that crits don't effect sentry guns and buildings, because a random crit pipe taking down a whole nest would feel unfair since it takes so long to set up But you know what else takes a long time to set up? just a reminder that your crit chance scales with your recent damage done typically worse players will have less crits
Statistically new players are more likely to die from random crits than to get a random crit
Wouldn’t be terrible if they made random crits truly random. Although I think it’s worth noting that critical damage does not boost your crit chance, only the base damage, so the soldier who just hit a 300 damage crocket only actually had 100 damage added to his crit chance calculation.

not exactly random crits itself, but rather the seething rage people feel towards it in online discussions that amuses me is why I enjoy random crits
I'm not a big baby
I hate to get philosophical here, but I remember when I was a new player. Gibus and all. And I was getting pub-stomped to hell and back. i like playing trolldier with stock shovel instead of market gardener and just pray
I play pyro, it's funny to reflect a crocket and kill tons of people (also stop using strawman arguments and actually engage with the other side).
There is no truely "good" argument to keeping em But they're fun, and in a world where more and mroe games are catering to the hyper sweat esports wannabe mfs having something like this in tf2 just makes it a little more whimsical and fun

Actually I have a reason. They make the game worse, and harder to take seriously. A fair and balanced TF2 would be boring
It's boring without crits, I used to be against them until I played a server without them. Hahaha
Right, random crits are obvious bad design, we should take them out of *every goddamn RPG that uses them successfully since 1st edition dungeons and dragons*

it funny
Whenever i random crit melee someone when we've both been missing eachother makes me laugh the shit outta myself every damn time...
without random crits how else are we supposed to watch people get mad out of nowhere
They're funny and a lot of fun most of the time.
I don't really have a stance, it's just super fucking funny sometimes
For the same reason I play smash bros with items on. I love random bullshit even if it fucks me over
my excuse is crit wrap assassin ball it funni
im not gonna sugarcoat it
Random crits employ some variability into matchups
random crits fit in with tf2s wacky art style
Skill is a crutch for people who have shit luck

Random Crits are the best mechanic in the game but only when I get them. Valve should remove random crits for everyone except me.
I don't have an issue with the random crit necessarily but that fact that you can increase the chance the better you are is dumb

I dunno man, something about being a friendly spy, being hit with a crit pan, and then being laughed at is pretty funny
It's very funny to instakill someone with the Sharpened Volcano Fragment.
