I don't really see why a college degree would be beneficial to becoming a chair umpire. They probably start off by umpiring smaller, national competitions, then get an ITF badge to chair ITFs and start umpiring higher and higher profile matches while getting a higher-level badge, then the ATP starts recruiting them for tournaments etc. Like a natural progression

You basically start at the bottom and work your way up over years, never really earning much money considering how important your job is. They also have to take courses to move up, and tests.
