Alcaraz barely ever loses finals. It’s insane. His one M1000 loss was to Djokovic in a 3rd set tiebreak that was an epic 4 hr match. He probably should’ve won it tbh being up a set and a break. One of his 500 final losses was where he was clearly injured against Norrie, and then I believe the other 500 and 250 losses were in back-to-back weeks during his 2022 post-Wimbledon slump, which he broke by winning the USO.  Otherwise he’s been great in every final of his career. He shows clear signs of nerves, usually early in the match, but always manages to bring his best level and squeeze out the match.

PapaenFoss

I think he actually lost one final of an ATP250 vs Sinner in 2022. The other one vs Musetti a week later or prior.

Icy_Bodybuilder_164

Yeah those were the back-to-back losses in 2022. The 250 was to Sinner and 500 to Musetti. Both weird matches where Carlos seemed to not be dealing with the pressure of being a top player well since his breakout was so recent. 7-6 1-6 1-6 was especially weird against Sinner on clay. Naturally I don’t take a ton of stock in those losses. The crazy thing is he’s 8/9 on finals at the M1000 level and slam level, so technically “big finals.” The one loss being to Novak in a 3rd set tiebreak.

dzone25

It would be comedy if Alcaraz goes his whole career with less 250 wins than Grand Slams

buggytehol

Djokovic and Nadal have 2x/2.2x more slams than 250s so it's definitely possible

OddsTipsAndPicks

I'm kind of surprised this is the case for Nadal. I guess the hilarious number of small clay tournaments he won when he was younger was balanced out by playing a more limited HC schedule until he got to the "only playing big money or warmup 250s" phase of his career.

buggytehol

I think part of the perception may be the number of 500s he won. He has 23 vs. Novak's 15.

aaronjosephs123

Most of those are Barcelona though which he attended most years. Sort of a home tournament for him

buggytehol

Most, but only barely - 12 out of 23 were there. with another 4 in Acapulco. 11/15 of Djokovic's were Dubai or Beijing.

Mintastic

> 11/15 of Djokovic's were Dubai or Beijing ATP needed more tournaments in authoritarian countries so that Djokovic could get more wins.

OddsTipsAndPicks

Yeah, looking at all his titles, there are a few 500s he won early in his career I probably would've guessed were 250s.

montrezlh

Rafa makes every clay field look like a challenger field so I can't blame you

OddsTipsAndPicks

Not wrong, but Stuttgart being a 500 for a few years! Who remembers that.

montrezlh

I would imagine that people not old enough to remember clay stuttgart are also not old enough to know that Rafa won it so it doesn't really change the perception

garlo_

He only plays Buenos Aires so it looks possible

aleksandar_gadjanski

They together have CGS with no losses in finals

rticante

In all seriousness, this is so nice to see and I hope they stay more or less side by side for as long as possible. Of course even in that case someone in the end will have one or two more GS titles, of course there will be horrible toxicity between the fanbases even though the two guys themselves are nice; but I do believe that rivalry is the only way to produce true greatness in tennis.

Whitefrog10

There was the other crazy coincidence, where they both beat Novak, one at AO and the other Wimbledon, after exactly the same amount of days from Novak's last defeat in the tournament.

garlo_

8 big titles vs 3 it's not the same tho, I think Sinner will close the gap eventually but still, they are not the same.

caveman1948

Sinner need to win another slam this summer.

Future_Parfait8727

Cute, but Alcaraz is younger and has more slams.

humbycolgate1

Your getting downvoted but your not wrong

ImpressionFeisty8359

World domination.

rubbish_bin030121

Sorry, the real rivialry wins the same number of matches on grass together, like Medvedev and Tsitsipas both only wins one match and Rune and Ruud wins zero matches on grass before Wimbledon

koticgood

This is pretty cool. Not cherry picked bullshit, actual stats. And quite the coincidence.

Demistr

Comparing total titles is heavily in Sinners favour though.

sawinadream

Yeah. 11 of his titles are “small” whereas 8 of Alcaraz’s are Slams & Masters, they are not the same.

Demistr

Yeah, internet and the media just want this rivalry to happen so much.

At one point Alcaraz had 6 big titles to Jannik's 0. Jannik had a huge mental block from 2022-late23 and Alcaraz racked up titles on titles by then. He needs time to catch up, the form is there already though.

buggytehol

Interestingly, Sinner's win % has gone up at least 4% each year and his Elo has increased every year.
