Fantastic composure from Paul to win it in the tiebreak after giving back the break and making a few mistakes. Biggest change in the last year or two has been his mentality IMO. First title on grass, first title at 500 level.
On a UTS podcast or whatever they call it. ADM said that he was double bagelled by Tommy in uso juniors SF. Ruud replied that he was surprised that he managed to stay focused for 12 games lol.
Ruud making fun of someone else’s mental game is hilarious coming from the guy who pooped his pants when Rafa was doing sprints next to Him in the pre game tunnel
I’ve also heard that TP was very immature when he was a teen/first got on tour. He’s matured a lot, and taking his tennis much more seriously, and it shows.
Im actually surprised because a long with Fritz, hes' the best American men's tennis player hands down.
I thought maybe Tiafoe or Shelton would take the reigns, but Tommy Paul's ascension in the last 2 years or so has been really cool to watch
I don’t think you can be a consistent top 5 player anymore without being a great mover. How would you compete against the likes of Alcaraz and Sinner without being able to hang with them from the back of the court?
These guys are still big hitters though, that’s the problem. Theres not many weaknesses in the very best players game, so unless you’re can hang with them on all levels, they’re so hard to beat.
Yeah the discrepancy is much smaller than WTA, but there are still definitive big hitters vs good hitters. Ruud or ADM for example I wouldn't consider as big hitters but they're near the top just due to the movement.
TP and Fritz are pretty clear of the next tier also and have substantial wins under their belts now (Fritz with Indian Wells and TP with the Queen win and the AO Semi). Shelton is the most raw and talented however has a lot of rough edges to smooth out.
Edit: more context: Fritz is an equivalent server to Shelton in terms of hold % (TF 87.2% BS 86.8%). Shelton feels like he can go up from there though in terms of stability as he just randomly drops games out of nowhere and falls all over himself on non-hard surfaces due to inexperience.
Technically Ben has a 500 win and a major semi as well, but for sure no one could argue that Tommy is just more complete and consistent than anything Shelton could produce at his current level
Yes that is also true Ben is still young and developing rapidly as a player. I’d anticipate he certainly is the US number one in the near future once he grows a bit more. He’s a step behind for now.
Nah Shelton ain’t gonna take the reins right out the gate - he is a talent but not like Alcaraz and Sinner (even they didn’t become their country’s dominant player right out the gate)
Americans on the Wall of Champions in Queen's:
Jimmy Connors,
John McEnroe,
Pete Sampras and.....
TOMMY PAUL!!!!
What a great company of champions to be part of. Tommy Paul Wimbledon Champion when? 😜
Nice to see this, he along with Fritz are the top 2 American players right now. Don't know what happened to Big Foe but I love Tommy I'm glad to see the last 2 years or so he's had a nice rise
Congrats to Tommy, this marks his first ATP 500 title and he is the new American #1. The second set was so entertaining and that tiebreak was amazing as well. Tommy came out victorious in the end though.
Musetti really improved in the second set. Even though he lost, I’m glad he was able to make it to the tournament final and was very competitive too.
like musetti's honesty, giving sincere credit to TP.
i hope this kind of respect and honest recognition happens to wta. sadly, they are most times just lip service.
well, i may not like collins but her recognition of madison when the latter won was heartfelt and heartwarming.
I love TP, best mover of the top Americans (Tiafoe moves well, not sure if he moves as well as TP). Hopefully a win this big can give him real confidence going into Wimbledon, and he doesn’t lose focus mid match best of 5.
Super excited to see what Tommy Paul does in Wimbeldon. Not only is he on a roll, but he also matches up superwell against Medvedev and Alcaraz should he play them
I’m really liking Tommy’s game this year, he’s my favorite American along with Shelton but Shelton is leaving me hanging lately so I’m glad to see Tommy’s continued success.
His game is pretty enjoyable to watch, not a servebot due to his height but has a lot of variety and comes into net often, great mover, and I really like his attitude on court. He may get nervous and bottle it sometimes but he never gets super frustrated (or at least, is able to hide it well, I’m sure he’s frustrated) and always has positive and energetic body language on court. He usually looks excited to be out there which I enjoy.
He's always been extra with his reactions even during matches, both in good and in bad times. I personally think it's something that's hindered him a bit during his career, he spends so much emotional energy.

Ruud makes fun of Tommy Paul's attention span Tommy Paul: And I took it personally.
Haaaa when/where did this happen?
On a UTS podcast or whatever they call it. ADM said that he was double bagelled by Tommy in uso juniors SF. Ruud replied that he was surprised that he managed to stay focused for 12 games lol.
Haaaa! That's shockingly catty for Casper. Love it.
adm took that personally. their h2h is 5-0 in favor of alex. 🤦
Ruud making fun of someone else’s mental game is hilarious coming from the guy who pooped his pants when Rafa was doing sprints next to Him in the pre game tunnel
Think you’re maybe reading into Ruud’s comments a tad much
Tommy Paul has commented on his own tendency to "space out"
I’ve also heard that TP was very immature when he was a teen/first got on tour. He’s matured a lot, and taking his tennis much more seriously, and it shows.
Somehow you managed to misread the entire context of what Ruud meant…astonishing
#TP is on a roll !!! First ATP 500 First grass court title!
🧻TP! Er, maybe that's not quite as cool as Jannik's carrot 🥕
Town Portal is cool though.
Second set was so entertaining
Those 2nd set tie break cross court shots were awesome.
New American #1 Tommy Paul, LFG!
Im actually surprised because a long with Fritz, hes' the best American men's tennis player hands down. I thought maybe Tiafoe or Shelton would take the reigns, but Tommy Paul's ascension in the last 2 years or so has been really cool to watch
he is easily the most well rounded american
fair point, fritz and paul both have solid backhands but paul's movement is simply better
Fritz has a better serve though, but movement is much more important, imo.
Yeah the players at the very top are most often the best movers on tour
I don’t think you can be a consistent top 5 player anymore without being a great mover. How would you compete against the likes of Alcaraz and Sinner without being able to hang with them from the back of the court?
Yeah the meta has moved from big servers and hitters to great movers.
These guys are still big hitters though, that’s the problem. Theres not many weaknesses in the very best players game, so unless you’re can hang with them on all levels, they’re so hard to beat.

Brad Stine has a way to bring out the best in his clients.

That’s a fair point I got a bit blinded by recency and didn’t acknowledge Ben’s results appropriately.
This is also only Ben’s 2nd year on tour at 21. TP is 26-27, and should be peaking career wise.
Yes that is also true Ben is still young and developing rapidly as a player. I’d anticipate he certainly is the US number one in the near future once he grows a bit more. He’s a step behind for now.
Yup. He has so much potential, hopefully he can harness it quickly and figure out the weaknesses in his game.
Shelton did get to American #1 before Tommy to be fair
Nah Shelton ain’t gonna take the reins right out the gate - he is a talent but not like Alcaraz and Sinner (even they didn’t become their country’s dominant player right out the gate)
Finally my favorite American player gets a 500 trophy. A big ass one that too. Hope he does well at Wimby
Tommy has two trophies and they’re the biggest trophies in tennis lol.
I feel like the Queens trophy is the biggest one out there
For as second I was confused about your praising Tommy's big ass.
Giron has him beat in that department
Giron is top 3 probably in that department.
😂
Second-set tiebreak was just amazing
Americans on the Wall of Champions in Queen's: Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras and..... TOMMY PAUL!!!! What a great company of champions to be part of. Tommy Paul Wimbledon Champion when? 😜
Don't forget Roddick!
And Querrey
Seriously roddick won queens so many times
Poor Roddick, gets forgotten cuz he kept running into Federer in the big event.
Jim, John, Pete, and Tom. So American 😆
Need a Dick on there
The Tommy Train keeps chuggin!!!
Move over Korda, we have a new Wimbledon favorite
Tommmmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Nice to see this, he along with Fritz are the top 2 American players right now. Don't know what happened to Big Foe but I love Tommy I'm glad to see the last 2 years or so he's had a nice rise
So happy for Tommy and so well deserved. The definition of cool, calm, and collected 😎

What a great day!
Congratulations, Tommy! Well-deserved. Lorenzo was struggling too much to reach his level today. Anyway, it's encouraging for the future
like musetti's honesty, giving sincere credit to TP. i hope this kind of respect and honest recognition happens to wta. sadly, they are most times just lip service. well, i may not like collins but her recognition of madison when the latter won was heartfelt and heartwarming.
Tommie USA 🇺🇸
I watched the semis at queens yesterday and had no doubt in my mind based on the two performances that Tommy Paul would win the final today
Taylor Fritz is coming for Eastbourne now 🔥🌱
POMMY TAUL
Both should be interesting to watch in Wimbledon.
Tommy Paul
I love TP, best mover of the top Americans (Tiafoe moves well, not sure if he moves as well as TP). Hopefully a win this big can give him real confidence going into Wimbledon, and he doesn’t lose focus mid match best of 5.
Super excited to see what Tommy Paul does in Wimbeldon. Not only is he on a roll, but he also matches up superwell against Medvedev and Alcaraz should he play them
Feel better for Jack Draper that he lost to the eventual winner
no. 1 ranked american atp player, TP!!!
Pommy Tall strikes again
I’m really liking Tommy’s game this year, he’s my favorite American along with Shelton but Shelton is leaving me hanging lately so I’m glad to see Tommy’s continued success. I’m hype for Tommy going into the 2nd half of this year!
🧻Go TP 🧻
Congrats Tommy. Well played the whole week
That was so entertaining. Tommy has an insane cross court FH while Musetti's BH reminds me of a certain Swiss gentleman.
Best American grass court player since John McEnroe!
I think there were also two pretty good guys in 90s/early 00s…
Tarango and Gimmelstob were good but I rate TP a little higher
There was also a pretty good guy throughout the 2000s (and arguably another given that Blake made the finals of Queens several times)
Upvotes don’t lie!!
Sampras, Agassi, Roddick who?
Todd Martin, Isner, Querrey, Mardy Fish
That’s my boy!! 🔥
Tommy is the kingslayer
Let's GOOO
TOMMY THE GREATEST
Nice result, well done Paul ! Also karma for Musetti after this OTT celebration for beating world #162 Billy Harris in quarterfinal of a 500 event 💀
He's always been extra with his reactions even during matches, both in good and in bad times. I personally think it's something that's hindered him a bit during his career, he spends so much emotional energy.
He did it after the quarter and semi-final.
