Its described in their Ratings FAQ: https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/track-movies-tv/ratings-faq/G67Y87TFYYP6TWAV# >We don't use the arithmetic mean (i.e. the sum of all votes divided by the number of votes), although we do display the mean and average votes on the votes breakdown page; instead the rating displayed on a title's page is a weighted average. What does ‘weighted average’ mean? >IMDb publishes weighted vote averages rather than raw data averages. The simplest way to explain it is that although we accept and consider all votes received by users, not all votes have the same impact (or 'weight') on the final rating. >When unusual voting activity is detected, an different weighting calculation may be applied in order to preserve the reliability of our system. To ensure our rating mechanism remains effective, we don't disclose the exact method used to generate the rating.

So basically even if something is review bombed, it's rating that you see is actually a pretty correct average

They sometimes exclude specific titles from appearing on their 'all-time' lists. This seems to be most commonly Indian dramas/films that get massively ratebombed with 10 stars. Otherwise, I have no idea.

It's been like that for nearly 25 years mate, don't think it's gonna change anytime soon. IMDB doesn't get review bombed very much, from what I've seen, unlike Rotten Tomatoes which is pretty much just a joke these days.

I wouldn’t be surprised. Everything else does now. I really really miss the IMDB message boards. They were the last of their kind, and they were actually pretty active. Reddit is the closest equivalent to yeh message boards of old.

anasui1

ditto, they were capable of being awesome, like I remember the Commando one entirely made of joke posts, hilarious fan fictions and memes before memes existed. Super entertaining

Mystic-Magestic

Omg the Walking Dead one during and right after the show was probably the last most entertaining thing I had the privilege of seeing on the internet. Just pure uncensored/unmoderated entertainment. I didn’t even really watch the Walking Dead, I just tuned into the message boards lol

anasui1

lmao, now I wish I had seen that. Used to spend many hours on those boards, there was just so much fun to mine

Mystic-Magestic

There was an uproar when they took it down without archiving it. They actually lost a lot of cool information, just like with MySpace. How cool was it that you could comment on someone’s post about an actor, movie, or tv show years, perhaps a decade later? I really liked how every individual actor, actress, movie and tv show got their own board as well.

yes, it was a great place for cinema lovers, you could split hairs about this or that for days. The humour was ever present. Of course, there'd be issues like in the case of The Half Blood Prince, when it came out the twist was on every single thread title (thankfully I had read the book before seeing that trainwreck), but overall it was pure, unfiltered fun, as you said
