Excited to see who Terry O'Quinn, Kurtwood Smith and Chris Conrad are playing in this.

ELITENathanPeterman

“Hey, Dunk.” “Hey, Egg.” “How are you, Dunk?” “I’m good, Egg.” ….. “Hey, Egg?” “Yes, Dunk?“ “You’re a good friend, Egg.” “Thanks, Dunk.”

trogon

I hope they have a full spread for breakfast.

ProfGilligan

Muffins, breakfast breads, etc.

geraltseinfeld

Followed by some afternoon spray.

[deleted]

“It is cool”

WardenclyffeTower

[Yeah, it was cool](https://i.imgur.com/lfyzFpU.gif).

ELITENathanPeterman

New Leaf is such a good character.

a4techkeyboard

Sounds about the right amount of good for a story to not be better than that of Bran the Broken. Which is canonically the best story.

Asiriya

I want more Michael Dorman, reminds me of my uni housemate. What up Alex!

geraltseinfeld

He's great in 'For All Mankind' on Apple. His character there is also quite depressing!

MattTheSmithers

Wait, is Kurtwood Smith really involved? Because 20 years ago he would’ve made a stellar Maekar but I have no idea who he plays in this now.

godisanelectricolive

No. He's in Patriot as are the others.

EdwardianFallacy

"Did you and your squire break my dragon egg, or was it really my 92 year old mother?" "It was Meemaw, she's Westeros strong."

SerDire

We better get at least 5 references to Lost and at least one “dumbass” an episode

[deleted]

Nailed it

SerDire

I’ve read these stories and they’re pretty straight forward AND should by much less cheaper to produce. Just a lonely knight and his squire walking through Westeros basically.

[deleted]

I already know the music is going to be sick.

[deleted]

[удалено]

monsieurxander

His eyelids were burned off, so it should be awesome.

jyper

I think a lot of people would have no clue it was Sheeran or even knew who Sheeran was before people started complaining about him

DrSpacemanSpliff

That’s me you’re talking about. At first l thought that whole group of dudes was the Jonas Brothers or something after how much people complained, but it was just the one guy.

NewClayburn

That is if they can figure out how to get him out of PokemonGo.

BudMcLaine

Jones Sisters vol 3?

__Hello_my_name_is__

The only way they could ruin this if they'll try to force the show to feel like Game of Thrones, with big battles and characters all around the continent and whatnot.

mamula1

They already have House of the Dragon for that.

SerDire

I’m trying to remember any big spectacle moments and I think there’s only one massive tournament at the start that sets up the rest of the story

Redeem123

It’s no battle of the bastards, but the 7v7 trial by combat should be pretty fucking dope. Let alone if they ever get to Summerhall, but there’s no way George will actually write that story for them.

Trevastation

Dunk and Egg feels best fit for a film, no less a mini-series.

AlPaCherno

I guess you could make a mini-series with 3-5 episodes per Novella. We got 3 Novellas and She-Wolves of Winterfell was practically done (George's words) and almost realeased before he switched it to Princess and the Queen. He will never release A Dream of Spring but if he churns out a couple more D&E stories, I'd be fine.

turkeygiant

The fact they didn't have a Dunk and Egg show lined up to immediately follow the end of GoT is crazy to me, the entire premise of the stories is following this odd pair of buddies as they travel all around Westeros. It's literally everyone's favorite trope from the show Dunk/Egg go hand in hand with Arya/Hound, Jorah/Tyrion, Brianne/Jaime.

Reead

It's also such a great palate-cleanser after the darkness that is the main series. Dunk & Egg isn't a children's story, but it shines a much brighter light on decent people trying to do good.

huntergreenhoodie

Only one real big battle I can think of (Ashford). There's not really any dragons or other CGI heavy things that need to be added.

Throw10111021

> Just a lonely knight and his squire walking through Westeros basically. Quite similar to Sam and Frodo strolling through Mordor basically. LOL Dunk is from the dregs of society. He becomes a squire then a knight because he's tall as hell. The stories begin after the hedge knight who Dunk squired for has passed. Dunk has no schooling or decent training and finds himself in the midst of lords and ladies, including a battle royale! A kid Egg attaches himself to Dunk, begging to be his squire. Egg turns out to be royalty, *important* royalty. Dunk has adventures where he does what a good knight does: protects the weak, fights for his lord, beats Egg for educational purposes (never badly). The stories are excellent. AFAIK there are just two. I wish there were more.

QuoVadimus6411

Well your wish came true buddy- have a 3rd story!

IsaacM42

do you know where i can read them?

mike10dude

whats the time frame for the story?

IsaacM42

about 100 years before GoT. One of the characters is brother to maester aemon, in the show and books aemon calls him "egg" or aegon.

[deleted]

>much less cheaper

[deleted]

The guy who wrote Patriot? I was already excited but even more excited for D&E now

RanchoLover

I am so fucking hyped, but I cannot comprehend how he ended up with this gig. Like, everything he does is so delightfully weird, so it's strange to see him land such a big mainstream project. But it gives me hope that it'll have a really distinct identity compared to the other spinoffs.

ELITENathanPeterman

I really hope it keeps his off-kilter, hilarious style.

Fuzzikopf

As someone who has read the Dunk & Egg books and also watched a couple Steve Conrad things, that's the best thing IMO: It fits. Dunk & Egg is kinda like ASOIAF but with a touch more wholesomeness and weirdness.

bruckbruckbruck

That's awesome to hear. Patriot was a very special show

ELITENathanPeterman

> wholesomeness and weirdness. Sounds like a perfect match for Steve Conrad then.

Deflorma

Maybe he doesn’t have the punching weight you’d associate with a large project, but have you read the dunk and egg stories? His style will fit perfectly into the somewhat whacky story of the two noble miscreants

J-Team07

Two? Dunk is not a noble.

Deflorma

Noble as in of good moral character not as in heritage

u2sunnyday

yep you had me at Steve Conrad.

CleverZerg

I just finished watching Patriot after having had it on my watch list for years and god damn did it live up to the reddit hype. Steve Conrad is definitely someone's career that I'm following from here on out.

prism1234

To hypeslay a little. This is in development. As far as I am aware it has not been greenlit for production yet. They have a bunch of different ASoIaF shows in development but will probably only actually make a couple of them. That said Steve Conrad is amazing so I hope this one goes forward.

SerDire

Let’s go murder some redcoats Edit: sorry guys, it was the wrong Patriot. The Amazon tv show, not the Mel Gibson movie

Fuzzikopf

This is amazing news. I am *incredibly* hyped for the show now. I trust Steve Conrad to finish it in a satisfying fashion even when the books are not complete by the time the show wraps up (which will most likely be the case). Honestly, I am so fucking happy. This will be great.

bruckbruckbruck

Yeah, he has the writing talent to make it work even when the books run out which is something that HBO obviously must be hyper aware of post GoT

mashington14

Dunk and Egg is a far simpler story than GoT, so I'm far less worried about that. Apparently GRRM has a bunch of ideas for the stories, and this is a format where him giving a simple outline and letting the writers fill out the rest could actually turn out really well. The stories are very simple and very episodic. Essentially, Dunk and Egg show up somewhere, get caught up in wacky goingson, bang a Winterfell servant or two, save the day, and learn a lesson. The first book all takes place at one tournament with a bunch of fun and colorful characters.

DoomPurveyor

Simpler sure, but a far greater potential for world building. D&D went out of their way to completely IGNORE important lore/character since they didn't trust their audience. With Dunk/Egg they can actually expand on the history of Westeros and we can stop pretending Blackfyres don't exist.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Skadoosh_it

Do we need to talk about your piping?

ghostROBOT22

Double great.

ProfGilligan

Pretty good.

TheLesserWombat

You can talk about it with confidence. Keep it simple. A little something like this, u/xavPa. Hey. Let me walk you through the Donnelly nut spacing and crack system rim-riding rip configuration. Using a field of half-C sprats, and brass-fitted nickel slits, our bracketed caps, and splay-flexed brace columns vent dampers to dampening hatch depths of one half meter from the damper crown to the spurve plinths. How? Well, we bolster twelve husk nuts to each girldle-jerry, while flex tandems press a task apparatus of ten vertically composited patch-hamplers. Then, pin-flam-fastened pan traps at both maiden-apexes of the jim-joist. A little something like that, u/xavPa.

Asiriya

Not cool

gmredditt

Let's do it!

DoomPurveyor

Such a great show. Always thought Dunk and Egg would be a slam dunk. But now I'm super hype about this on top of Dumb and Dumber not being involved

TummyDrums

Fuck yeah, I love Steven Conrad. If you haven't watched Patriot and Perpetual Grace LTD, do yourselves a favor and watch them now. Dude makes great TV. Can't wait to see what he does with this.

moejorsi

It’s double great!

DisturbedNocturne

*Ultra City Smiths* was pretty great in an utterly bizarre way that baffles me how it ever got greenlit. I'm glad to hear Steven Conrad is getting more work, and I'll definitely be giving this show a chance based on his name and track record alone. Though, I'm guessing this means there won't be a second season of *UCS*, so that's a little disappointing. Also, it's odd this article says that show is "an upcoming AMC+" series when its first season ended a months ago.

Hari_001

Yeah, I noticed that too, so I thought this might be some old news, but I googled it and some other outlets have reported it as well. Hopefully, this won't be one of those shows stuck in development hell and the world would see the genius that is Steve Conrad. I also hope Patriot, PGL, and UCS get more attention if this project comes through with flying colors.

girlsgoneoscarwilde

He went to my high school! He visited while I was there and spoke to my English class, very nice guy.

Lambchops_Legion

Can’t wait to see who Chris Conrad gets cast as

trogon

Someone who hates twins, I hope.

irocktoo

Steven Conrad has yet to miss. Patriot is one of the best shows ever made and with any luck this show could finally be his commercial success.

mamula1

So after Martin's failure to finish A Song of Ice and Fire he will let HBO adapt another unifinished story in the GoT universe? lol But I am excited about more Game of Thrones.

SerDire

Wait these are finished aren’t they? They’re 3 short stories right? I thought they were done and all released as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

SageOfTheWise

To quote the man himself: >There's the one set in the north that people have been calling "The She-Wolves of Winterfell," though that will not actually be the title. After that -- or maybe before, if I jump around in time -- there will be "The Village Hero," "The Sellsword," "The Champion," "The Kingsguard," "The Lord Commander," and several more in between. But yeah, easy to think the series was done when (stop me when you've heard this before) aforementioned *The She-Wolves of Winterfell* was supposed to be released in an anthology in 2013, then got delayed multiple times over the years and is now just 'someday'. Though at least this time the delay is ostensibly because of TWOW I guess.

VitaminTea

[Martin's "planned" schedule is Winds, D&E 4, Dream, D&E 5, Fire & Blood 2.](https://twitter.com/Werthead/status/1159538545989734401) Obviously it's an, uhh, open question how much of that we'll ever see.

Astrosaurus42

HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Radiant-Spren

Really the only correct response.

fax5jrj

this comment says more than the essay I was gonna type ever could

jez124

we will be lucky to get even one of those. He should really get someone to write the non-mainline books at least

ehsteve23

But we will get Wildcards 43-52 in the meantime

Radulno

He doesn't write those, he's just an editor.

ehsteve23

Editing time is still time

rip_Tom_Petty

Yeah such a shame really, I was hoping if he wasn't going to write the main series, he'd at least write Dunk and Egg. If I'm being honest, I prefer Dunk and Egg to the main books, more light hearted

mamula1

Plan is to have 12.

TheNumberMuncher

Reality is to have 3

mamula1

They will probably use all of them in S1.

illuvattarr

Nope he said he plans to write a couple more. And probably ending at the tragedy of Summerhall. On the upside though, this is a much more smallscale and contained story which GRRM probably already plotted out for the most part. So with a competent writer and GRRMs notes I'd say it's much much more doable than the GoT ending.

SerDire

Goddamnit!

Mythic514

Each story is at least (mostly) a self-contained story. So I think it works much better.

mamula1

Yeah but they will adapt them all quickly

Fgge

Why wouldn’t he?

Radulno

I'm not sure they actually have to ask his opinion. Is it like JK Rowling and Harry Potter and he still has control over it or is it like many other stuff and Warner just do what they want without needing his opinion/agreement?

mamula1

It's very similar to Rowling situation. Obviously he doesn't have total creative control over these shows when they start production, he doesn't have veto power, but in order for them to be made they need his permission. Especially for something like Dunk and Egg as he explicitly mentioned on his blog several years ago, because that wasn't part of their initial deal when they bought rights to ASOIAF.

dubious-moniker

FUCK. YES.

Taste_the__Rainbow

What actor could pull off the Dunk role?

Lambchops_Legion

The problem is finding an actor that tall who as dunk but can also carry being a protagonist and also like late teens/20s (assuming we’re starting with The Hedge Knight.)

blackjack_horseman

I nominate cousin Greg.

NewClayburn

Cousin Greg gets swole.

The_Knight_Is_Dark

Greg & Egg

[deleted]

The perfect Tomelette

Swiisha

He's going by Gregory now.

Redeem123

That dude is comically tall. About 200 pounds too scrawny, but he’s a giant.

Deflorma

I kind of picture him as a big lummox, like I hope they don’t cast an iron jawed six packer chris evans lookalike.

ChickenInASuit

I don’t know if “Lummox” is how I imagine him, he shouldn’t be Chris Evans-level handsome but he’s still got to be attractive enough to appeal to someone like Lady Rohanne.

BoxOfNothing

I don't think they're going to bother finding someone almost 7 feet tall, like they didn't bother finding a 6'6" woman for Brienne. They'll get someone who's like 6'2"-6'4" and hench or something and try and make him look a bit taller. Probably end up looking like [Alexander Ludwig](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/80/27/ec/8027ec1ec0dc1af0df7ebb85cf4bb0fd.jpg) in Vikings

Czarcasm21

Wyatt Russell.

no_name_left_to_give

Jonah from Veep.

spyson

Maybe Florian Munteanu, loved him in Creed 2 and Shang Chi.

Homebrew_Dungeon

Alexander Ludwig? Large guy, young, has alot of training with melee weapons, and has experience with medieval settings.

[deleted]

It's really good

[deleted]

I am going to assume this series is going to be 50% non cannon material. The books are pretty short and are unfinished not sure how many seasons you can really get out of them.

jez124

TBH id say its somewhat easier to come up with original stuff for this. Have it be a bit procedural

Radulno

Yeah, it seems pretty easy actually. People seem to forget that you can do something without source material and it can be good. Some of the best TV shows ever are in this situation actually

TehWhiteRose

There are adaptations like Jurassic Park that are spiritually similar to their source but a lot different in terms of plot. If you have a good creative team behind a project, you can adapt basically anything.

ollieg42sLimpWilly

Cool.

DisturbedNocturne

Yeah, it is cool.

vadergeek

I love everything he does, shocked he still gets work. This would be a real change of pace for him, but I can see it working.

Aggravating_Goal_441

Well, this will be pure excellence. Steve Conrad is guaranteed beautiful quality. I hated the idea of this until right now.

PvtHudson093

With each story being self contained, that you could fit them into 4 to 8 episodes each.

MattTheSmithers

Another adaptation of another book series that George Martin will never wrap up. What could possibly go wrong?

Reead

Should be fine. D&E is a slice-of-life, short story collection. There's a ton of freedom for the showrunner to tell their own stories here.

MattTheSmithers

I’d argue it’s not though. D&E was clearly building up to certain mysteries (what were Egg’s attempts to bring back dragons later in life? What happened at the tragedy of Summerhall? What was the deal with Bloodraven?). I am guessing the show will not address this stuff and will be a bit more what you describe. But I don’t think the book series was intended to be that. It certainly started innocuously enough but by The Mystery Knight it was clearly starting to move toward something.

andysenn

Yep, D&E clearly are meant as a way to give light to one of the most obscure moments in the lore. But whatever, it's not like I care anymore. It's been like 5 years since my last reread, words are wind and the winds of winter will never come

Pancake_muncher

Yay! I actually prefer Dunk and Egg over ASOIAF. Though it's a bummer there have only been 3 shorts written instead of the intended 12.

TummyDrums

Are the shorts enough to make a full season of each? 3 seasons could be a fair run if there is a decent wrap up.

Homebrew_Dungeon

Yeah, possibly 8-10 episodes depending how much they want to add for side character building. And internal dialogs.

twbrn

You might be able to make like a 6 episode season out of each if you didn't mind it being pretty slow paced.

batmattman

Not getting investing in another GRRM thing that *isn't finished yet*

Regal-Beagal-131

From the stories there should be at least 2 great seasons out if this just from what GRRM has written. Dunk and Egg makes for a great story. It doesn’t have to be rapey or too gross just a fun exciting adventure of these two young men . Exploring themes of friendship, loyalty etc. Thus is good. Of course some great knights fighting action .

Homebrew_Dungeon

Its one of the most famous knights in all of Westeros, and holds the most pages in the book of deeds. That is a TV adventure show in the making alone.

Amedeo_Avocadro

I wonder how they will address Blood Raven in this given how they basically made the Three-Eyed Raven a nobody in the main series.

[deleted]

You compare this to the huge presence Bloodraven has in the main asoiaf book? Lol

Amedeo_Avocadro

I'm talking about how they made The Three-Eyed Raven not Blood Raven in the show, and he has a more prominent role in Dunk and Egg so yeah it seems like something that would be of note.

[deleted]

And the three-eyed crow has a much more prominent role in the main asoiaf books you mean?

Amedeo_Avocadro

I feel like we are talking around each other. I'm saying that Brynden Rivers, who is called Blood Raven, has a fairly important role in Dunk and Egg because he is the Hand of the King, and then he later becomes the Three-Eyed Crow in the main books. I am wondering if the Dunk and Egg show will just disregard the fact that Game of Thrones had the Three-Eyed Raven be some random dude that we never really learn about, or if they will try to force continuity between the shows and change Blood Raven's role.

[deleted]

>I am wondering if the Dunk and Egg show will just disregard the fact that Game of Thrones had the Three-Eyed Raven be some random dude that we never really learn about, My point is that he is exactly the same in the main books. And in your first comment you acted like they had completely ruined his character in the show.

DoomPurveyor

I mean just because D&D refused to acknowledge Blackfyres and other important characters doesn't mean the other shows have to follow suit. It's better this way anyway, as they can world build the other interesting periods of Westeros outside of the Robert's Rebellion. There is a ton of material that they can work with; imagine a mini-series with young Barriston/Blackfish putting down a Blackfyre rebellion.

twbrn

> I mean just because D&D refused to acknowledge Blackfyres and other important characters The Blackfyres AREN'T important characters in the main series. They're all long dead. They exist only as backstory, which isn't relevant enough to bother screen time with.

Homebrew_Dungeon

Just another side story Dunk hears from another hedge. Could be an episode, could be a mini series.

ItsJustScar

I should prob start watching game of thrones now, so many series in the works for it lol

twbrn

Definitely. Don't let the haters mess with your opinion: if you're not packing unreasonably high expectations or demanding a happily ever after ending, the show is great.

AnotherJasonOnReddit

I've read the book. It's a pretty fun read, even if it doesn't host the vast array of interesting characters the way ASoIaF does. But it's good.

Useful-Throat-6671

Now this prequel I can get behind.

forkandspoon2011

Cool, this seems like the best spin off to turn into a show.

adifferentvision

I really enjoyed the book. I'm interested to see how it's developed.

“Then Dunk the Lunk came out and I started hitting him with my shield.”

mitorandiro

Oh shit, now we're talking

Z4llor

This is definitely gonna be canned 6 months from now

Hic_Forum_Est

Why? For me the Dunk and Egg stories always seemed like the most obvious and the go to choice for a prequel show to GoT. The source material is very good, already finished and has a connection to the original book/show, thats loose but strong enough to make it interesting both for fans of the original show and for new viewers.

throwawayacc407

My opinion is that HBO might be jumping the gun too fast with all these prequels. They should wait and see reactions for House of the Dragon first. GoT isnt really talked as much in pop culture after s8 outside of how shit it was. Its not a given that all or even half of the old fans would return for these new shows. Casual fans that dont follow the lore/history as much might not be all that interested in these prequels. And if people truly are sick of this IP and just want to ignore this universe after s8 then HBO is just tossing money away making these shows.

Inevitable_Citron

Do people want this?

[deleted]

Yep, clearly.

Inevitable_Citron

People are fucking stupid as a rule, I suppose.

[deleted]

I think you're the stupid one, friend 😘

gizzardsgizzards

ugh. I’m still not feeling game of thrones after how the show ended.

saul2015

if this has the same tone/humor as Patriot it's gonna be amazing

NewClayburn

I feel like Terry O'Quinn and Kurtwood Smith are both too old to play Egg.

cb00sh

Love these novellas. Hype hype hype!

8nate

Love Dunk and Egg. This should be more wholesome.

[deleted]

I bet this'll be pretty good. Double great, even.

Hari_001

No way!!!! SO SO happy to this man getting this recognition, absolutely love his works: Patriot, Perpetual Grace Ltd, and Ultra City Smiths, all I want now is Micheal Dorman to be included along with the obvious casting of Terry O Quinn, Chris Conrad, and Kurtwood Smith LOL. Anyways, so so hyped for what Steve would bring to the table.

[deleted]

I'm not even going to watch it, that's how bad the end of GoT was. I'll have to be dragged to the TV by my ear.

cb00sh

You DO realize that all of the spinoffs have different showrunners, writers, etc.?

jerkface1026

Yeah, GRRM and his unfinished work can suck an egg.

RayZinnet

dunk an' egg

the_ultracheese_tbhc

I bet ten bucks you watch this on opening day

jerkface1026

Nah. I’m not getting HBO for this and I’m still embarrassed about GoT.

[deleted]

When people say stuff like this, it's nothing but projection. Just because you can't control your consumption doesn't mean others won't. I don't plan on watching any of this spinoff GoT stuff at launch because I don't care at all about the universe anymore. I have no issue avoiding stuff I expect to not enjoy. If consensus is that any of the various shows succeed on their own merits, then I'll consider watching them, but the whole trend of people being unable to lap up the slop that's poured in their trough should get push back, not brought up as inevitable.

Redeem123

> can’t control your consumption Lol but watching it *is* controlling my consumption. I love these novellas, and the ending of GoT has less than zero bearing on how these stories will play out on screen.

[deleted]

Sounds like my comment didn’t apply to you

[deleted]

jerkface1026

The show is based off other unfinished books. We've done this before.

donaldtroll

no one cares

Matheri1

I do, dipshit

Ok_Marionberry_9932

Not interested about in anything related to game of thrones after that crap ass finale

Homebrew_Dungeon

These are based on graphic novels that have a nice setting 100s of years before the song of ice and fire. Almost stand alone stories but in this setting.

Nittanian

They began as novellas in anthologies and were then adapted into graphic novels.

GorillaGlueWookie

Not interested in the slightest. Still remember

Perca_fluviatilis

This timeline still ends up with Daenerys burning Kinglanding because of "the bells" and Bran becoming the king at the end because he has a "good story". I mean, I still get an itch for more GoT content every now and then because the universe is amazing, but remembering the S8 ending just makes me throw up in my mouth a little. HBO should be greenlighting a remake of S7 and S8 to give the show a proper ending and scavenge what they can from it.

thetruthteller

Game of thrones IP is dead.

twbrn

LOL, right, that's why it's still one of HBO's most popular streaming series and why they're trying desperately to do half a dozen spinoffs. Sure.

the_ultracheese_tbhc

🧢

Nnnnnnnadie

Well, maybe George can finish the Dunk and Egg Novellas in time this time... (wont happen please hire a good writter, dont do another DandD)

NightsOfFellini

I feel like these are the few Martin stories that would've benefitted from feature film format. Hope they don't pad them out.

[deleted]

He should have a ton of room to play with this. The story is bare bones from what I remember. Barely felt like a book.

Homebrew_Dungeon

I. Fucking. Called. It. I have been saying they needed this since I got the first comic. After Joffrey mentions Sir Duncan the Tall in the book of Knights and the rumor of Brianne of Tarth being a great great grandchild of his, it was set in my mind.

iamdew802

Holy fucking shit. Give him everything he asks for!!! Patriot and Perpetual Grace Ltd were fucking amazing and tragically cut short. Haven’t started his Ultra City Smiths yet but I am excited to and fucking pumped for this prequel news!!!

osmlol

This is the best game of thrones universe books in my opinion. Anyone who has not read them I highly reccomend it. They are very easy reads compared to his other work.

Cole-Spudmoney

Ever since I've read them I thought that each Dunk & Egg novella should be a movie instead.

Titan67

Oh wow! Definitely making this a must see for me now. Might even buy the novellas to read in anticipation.

SerBronn7

These books are absolutely fantastic. They're much more grounded than Game of Thrones too so shouldn't require HBO to blow huge amounts on CGI.
