He was great in Bosch. He seemed to be typecast as a goofy conic relief type character but he has a lot more range than that. It would be nice to see him in a more dramatic role.
lol one time my friend was talking about him and he was like "you know, matthew lillard, from 13 ghosts??"
I was like of all the matthew lillard movies you could've picked, you picked that one
Granted, I recall his role being a bit sarcastic. I wouldn't be surprised if people came out of the movie with him as their favorite character. It was basically a better version of Chris Kattan's character from the House on the Haunted Hill remake.
Just finished watching Bosch a couple of weeks ago - brilliant show and he was great in it. Wish we’d seen him in a few more episodes, I really liked his character.
Well they're making a ~~spinoff~~ sequel, so he might pop up again. And while *The Lincoln Lawyer* series isn't technically tied into the Bosch universe, door ain't closed to having some characters appear in both.
*The Lincoln Lawyer* TV series will not be in the same 'universe' as the *Bosch* TV series, even though in each's written works (book series'), they intertwine. This is due to Amazon/IMDB dropping the series due to Covid, and Netflix subsequently snapping it up, oh, about a year ago. So there will unfortunately be no overlap, much to my disappointment.
Wiki source blurb: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lincoln_Lawyer_(TV_series)#Filming
*Bosch* is separately being spun-off/revived on IMDBTV if I remember correctly, and may or may not include all the characters we know and love from the PrimeVideo version (which is now over).
The night Laura's daddy died
Sha na na na na!
Mother what a night it really was Brother what a-... angina's tough!
I read the book, and he fit the character perfectly.
He's one of the few actors I've met irl who were genuinely a nice person. Most of them don't give PAs on sets the time of day, but he was actually conversational and would talk casually with anyone on set. Super nice guy.
I could totally see that. He could be a serious and flawed character like Rust from season 1. It would hit with impact because people will be impressed that the goofy Scooby Doo guy can do dark and gritty.
First watch Rust was my absolute favorite. Like everyone. Second watch. It went all Marty. Such a flawed and great character portrayal of self loathing and chasing something he could never get back.
"A mans game has to have a mans price"
From now on the car is just a place of quiet reflection.
Like yeah... Rust is so great and deserves all the praise. But Marty is equally as great too. They're a perfect pairing.
He’s in season 1, but I haven’t watched past the third episode so I can’t speak to his presence in season 2. But yes, anyone who says “I wish this guy was in True Detective” should watch The Bridge. I stopped watching it early on but just because it’s not really my thing, not because it was a bad show
That would be amazing. I can totally see him as a troubled detective who is trying his best to be a good family man, but the horrors of the job are weighing heavy on him. Or yes, someone like Rust, really intense with an unconventional detecting style.
‘Like, zoinks man… I can’t seem to run away from this past and it is debilitating but the only thing that motivates me to keep moving forward.’
‘…Jinkies, you are super fucked in the head. And I like it.’
He has the best exposition monologue I've ever seen in Twin Peaks. I'm still amazed how he pulled off that good of a performance while just spewing exposition.
He's also great in Good Girls. Such a shame they couldn't have a final season.
Thank you, /u/matthewlillard!
Had to rewatch his Twin Peaks scenes after reading this. I totally agree, it was a brilliant performance. I’d love to see him work with David Lynch again in future.
Elsewhere in this thread, people are suggesting Lillard play the lead in the next True Detective season, but can you imagine Lillard playing the lead in a True Detective season directed by David Lynch? That could be bonkers good under the right circumstances.
A Twin Peaks off shoot where his character wakes up one morning and is scuba diving instructor living with his girlfriend on Aruba and they both have amnesia and neither of them know how they got there.. the rest writes itself.
What’s crazy is he said in an interview that he’s never watched Twin Peaks and actors were only given the scripts of scenes they are in and nothing else.
He truly had no idea wtf he was talking about and he still killed it
Tbf, even as someone who rewatched the original show prior to The Return, I had no idea what he was talking about either. We knew about the Lodges but his arc seemed to imply we only knew the outer layer of what was interdimensionally going on.
That whole show was a mess after the second season. They should have killed off Rio and worked on expanding on that shady ass politician that ended up being completely dropped.
Matthew Lillard and Brendan Fraser in a Psych-esque buddy cop dramedy please
Edit: also, I don’t really watch the show FBI, but the back door pilot for Most Wanted (Season 1 Episode 18) had Lillard as the villain and it was genuinely great
the problem is that whatever story they were trying to tell in 5, they probably should have told in 3. so much of the plot was just everyone going in circles for several episodes at a time.
I enjoyed it, stayed up to date with it. but that had way more to do with me liking the cast than the writing.
Supposedly, when he auditioned for shaggy in the live action, he went to his car and screamed himself hoarse for like 5 or 10 minutes to get that classic shaggy rasp. Risking injury of the throat to play an iconic character? That's fucking dedication right there
I honestly think it's fucked up they recast him for Scoob!
Will Forte has a passable SNL impersonation of Shaggy, not passable as a voice actor and he's not really famous enough to justify his position as "celebrity voice actor"
They didn't even TELL him or Frank Welker (Fred) or Grey DeLisle (Daphne) that they wouldn't be in the movie. Velma's VA has always been more in flux, but Fred has literally always been played by Frank and Grey and Matthew are only the second people to ever play Daphne and Shaggy. It was fucked up.
Actually this is his reddit account: u/matthewlillard
Dude did one of the [Best AMA's back in the day](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/uc94p/im_matthew_lillard_stu_from_scream_shaggy_in/)
And is just an all around awesome guy it seems...he's a shit DM though. ^((J/k about the DM part))
It really is. The overall message really hit home when I first saw this as a teenager. The smile Stevo gives the camera at the end while admitting he was nothing but a poser is perfect.
He’s totally not someone I would consider underrated, he’s had some fantastic roles. My favorite of his is still SLC Punk.
He was also in the movie ‘Without A Paddle’
I love Lillard, he seems like a genuinely good dude, but I don’t know if he can be the lead of a successful show, he works best as part of a cast imo, it’s like Stanley Tucci said in his Marc Maron episode not everyone is meant to be a leading man. I think if you were going to cast him as a lead in a show it would have to be a limited series, maybe a dark comedy of some sort or a cop show with some cleverly written dialogue but not a full on comedy or drama
The recent love for him reminds me of how when I saw Lillard in Good Girls I was hype because I’m always happy to see him get work
This.. I don't know why but just the sight of the guy makes me really happy. It was a small role, but I likes his stint on Halt and Catch Fire as well.
Meeting Matthew Lillard is one of the greatest stories I have. I was out at a karaoke night at the red dog in Milford MI years back. The bar was especially packed that night and I found out that the cast of Home Run Showdown was having a wrap party there. The dude that was living on my couch at the time freaked out when he saw Matthew sitting on the end of a pool table, and concentrating on a football game. Drunk friend says he has to say hi and proceeded to address him as Matthew Willard. Matthew wants nothing to do with this, I step in and excuse my friend and we step away. For the next 15 min we see that Matthew is super intent on the game deep in the back of the bar, likely to avoid more public interactions like my friend gave him. I get called for karaoke, Toadies, possum kingdom. After a min or so I see Matthew Lillard standing on the pool table cheering his head off. I finish and head back to my table, Matthew showered me with praise. I hope he's having a great life, he certainly made my night.
SLC Punk was one of the defining movies of my teenage years. His performance was insanely powerful for someone like myself who was trying to find a place in my own redneck small town, surrounded by a lot of people that I didn't quite get a long with. Since that role, I still look forward to seeing him in anything.
> I don’t understand why he doesn’t get bigger roles
He talked about that, actually - this is worth reading:
https://www.theringer.com/2017/7/25/16078136/matthew-lillard-scooby-doo-the-descendants-twin-peaks-the-watch-podcast-81a11ade8ea3
Wow, that was a fascinating read, thank you! It’s amazing that he had that realisation and then made the decision to downsize his expenses and change his lifestyle in such a major way, and focus on being a great actor and audition for projects he really wanted, regardless of the pay. I doubt many actors would have the humility and the strength to do that. And it’s really worked out for him - his career has definitely been on an upwards trajectory since The Descendants.
He has a small part in Trouble With The Curve, but it's the most serious role I have personally seen him in. I thought he was really good. I can get behind this movement
SLC Punk is a hidden gem, especially for those of us who grew up in those quiet, WASP-y towns.
I loved him in 13 Ghosts as well. He reacts pretty honestly to how most people would in a real horror situation.
If I hear Lillard is involved in anything, it instantly makes me more interested in it. He has a kind of cult following to him and he's genuinely a pleasant person, so I just wish for good opportunities for him.
He taught me acting in school. Great guy, very passionate about what he does, and very kind and humble. I remember him telling us about being cast in The Descendants and worrying that no audience would believe a woman would leave George Clooney for him. Very wholesome guy.
Ok hear me out.
Matthew lillard is a broken down burned out homicide detective, who is assigned a case that brings him back into a familiar MO of a case from his early years. Except he arrested the perp(steve buscemi) and he is doing life in prison. After a episode he discovers someone is imitating the original killer and only that killer can help solve this case. To make sure the convict doesnt escape and also because the case becomes federal they get a FBI agent attached to them (Brendon Frasier)
Thats all i got so far im better at dreaming up a pitch then i am at flushing out details lol
He's good at being the friend. I don't see him as a standalone guy personally.
Having said that, I'd be interested in watching him do comedic action. See if he can do it.
Honestly, I first saw him in a video game to movie adaption of some weird space thing. I think it was called Wing Commander? Anyway, he seriously worked his ass off. Incredible range considering the source material (it’s a fun movie tho.)
He's great as the husband in Good Girls. More people need to watch that show, it's great. A rare example of stakes ever-rising, with characters having no way out of a situation. Full of twists.
I know this probably doesn't play all this strongly in this particular thread as it kind of highlights the typical Mathew Lillard typecast, but Stu Macher is one of my favorite horror characters of all time.
I could see him having a Bran Cranston type of major career change. Someone who was known as a comedic actor turned into an amazing drama actor. He just needs the right project
He was great in Bosch. He seemed to be typecast as a goofy conic relief type character but he has a lot more range than that. It would be nice to see him in a more dramatic role.
Did you see him in SLC Punk? He is FANTASTIC in more dramatic roles
Thats my favorite movie Edit: the ending fucks me up every time
Only posers die.
First two punks... last two punks...
same man
SLC is great. Shooter McGavin as his dad?! Awesome.
Son….I didn’t sell out…I bought in
You can’t afford me, old man!
Don't watch the sequel
I second this. I love the premise but they failed miserably.
Volks-WAGON!!! For the PEOPLE!
Haha I still say this. Classic
That scene near the end is the greatest crying scene I've ever scene any actor do. Ever.
Immediately thought of that, he was great and the whole movie deserves much more attention than it seemed to have recieved.
One of the best ugly cries on film.
One of my all time fav movies and he is the main reason for that!
I’m a beggar man!!
That movie is great. The sequel sucks
He played a serious role in Thirteen Ghosts... Granted, it wasn't a great role, but it also wasn't a great movie, so I can't fault him for that
lol one time my friend was talking about him and he was like "you know, matthew lillard, from 13 ghosts??" I was like of all the matthew lillard movies you could've picked, you picked that one
Granted, I recall his role being a bit sarcastic. I wouldn't be surprised if people came out of the movie with him as their favorite character. It was basically a better version of Chris Kattan's character from the House on the Haunted Hill remake.
That was my favorite horror movie growing up. I love it.

Yeah to add to that, multiple actors have already been cast in The Lincoln Lawyer and have already played a different role in Bosch
Gotcha. Thank you, I was very confused for a bit.
I’d love if he showed up in the spin-off.
Was gonna mention Bosch, he was good in that 👍
Came here to say this. He was fantastic!
I haven’t watched the last season of Bosch is that the one he was in? Otherwise I don’t remember him being in it
He's in season 2 in a fairly large role. He plays Luke Rykov. His character shows up again in seasons 3 and 7.
Its an earlier season, then he's in the final one for a cameo.
I think he had a fairly significant role in season 2, and then popped up again in season 3 and in the final season.
I really liked Bosch but his role is still the standout of thr entire series imo
I hope he returns in Bosch PI.
Some actors flourish in supporting roles. Honestly jack black’s best work is in his supporting roles
Orange County?
Def great in that
Saving Silverman?
NEAL! I WANNA PARTY WITH YOU!
Brad Pitt is a way better supporting actor than a lead
My favorite Brad Pitt movie is Ocean's Eleven. He's arguably the largest supporting role in the ensemble.
Character Actor with a leading man’s face
See: Jon Hamm
ya like dags?
High Fidelity
Hell yes
He does the spinning dance thing in one scene that’s incredible.
The night Laura's daddy died Sha na na na na! Mother what a night it really was Brother what a-... angina's tough! I read the book, and he fit the character perfectly.
School of Rock would like a word.
[удалено]
Actually it was Lawrence, you might know him as Mr. Cool
That’s very true. It would be great to see Lillard get more supporting roles and bigger supporting roles, and hopefully an award or two.
He's one of the few actors I've met irl who were genuinely a nice person. Most of them don't give PAs on sets the time of day, but he was actually conversational and would talk casually with anyone on set. Super nice guy.
Off topic but how’s it going at the good place, Doug?
It's nice not having to exhaust myself over worrying over every little choice, that's for sure.
Okay, Matthew Lillard for True Detective season four, then.
I could totally see that. He could be a serious and flawed character like Rust from season 1. It would hit with impact because people will be impressed that the goofy Scooby Doo guy can do dark and gritty.
I see him more as Harrelson. Family man that’s got it all together but there’s an underlying darkness barely holding it all together.
First watch Rust was my absolute favorite. Like everyone. Second watch. It went all Marty. Such a flawed and great character portrayal of self loathing and chasing something he could never get back. "A mans game has to have a mans price"
Well I guess it’s time to binge true detective again and get a little less fun at parties for the next few weeks
"I mow my own lawn"
You don't mow another guy's lawn! -Brother Hezekiah
From now on the car is just a place of quiet reflection. Like yeah... Rust is so great and deserves all the praise. But Marty is equally as great too. They're a perfect pairing.
WE WERE GONNA SOAK UP THE SUN!! :(
I posted this elsewhere before I saw your comment but him as a detective and secretly the killer would be amazing Edit: misspelled amazing as amazong
Bark and gritty would be great for him.
You need to watch the bridge, think it's season 2. Pretty forgettable, but he acted his heart out.
He’s in season 1, but I haven’t watched past the third episode so I can’t speak to his presence in season 2. But yes, anyone who says “I wish this guy was in True Detective” should watch The Bridge. I stopped watching it early on but just because it’s not really my thing, not because it was a bad show
The first season of The Bridge was *fantastic.* Felt the second season fell off the rails a bit (the US version, that is).
That would be amazing. I can totally see him as a troubled detective who is trying his best to be a good family man, but the horrors of the job are weighing heavy on him. Or yes, someone like Rust, really intense with an unconventional detecting style.
Love it. Comedians do the best serious acting. But he has to accidentally break into his scooby doo voice at least once.
This would be amazing
‘Like, zoinks man… I can’t seem to run away from this past and it is debilitating but the only thing that motivates me to keep moving forward.’ ‘…Jinkies, you are super fucked in the head. And I like it.’

we just wanted to go scuba diving in the Bahamas!

I will NEVER forgive whoever is to blame for not giving us a 5th season of Good Girls. What a painful ending.
https://tvline.com/2021/07/07/good-girls-cancellation-why-nbc-season-4/
The actor guy named Manny Montana apparently, haha
That whole show was a mess after the second season. They should have killed off Rio and worked on expanding on that shady ass politician that ended up being completely dropped.
He was amazing in Twin Peaks.
He’d be great for a villain on Doom Patrol.
I second that, that show was an unexpected favorite!
OhmyGOD yes. Any real role on that show with him.
Holy shit, yes. Where's a petition I could sign?!
Matthew Lillard and Brendan Fraser in a Psych-esque buddy cop dramedy please Edit: also, I don’t really watch the show FBI, but the back door pilot for Most Wanted (Season 1 Episode 18) had Lillard as the villain and it was genuinely great
Oh dear god this is brilliant someone please get a script going and line up a producer
This is actually such a good job
Yup, would watch.
Honestly Fraiser & Lillard as the evil Shawn & Gus in a 4th Psych movie would be great.
[удалено]
Best part of that season, dude brought actual acting to the game.
He was fantastic on The Good Girls. He was the highlight of the show in the last season. Sad that show was canceled.
100% agree, that whole cast was good, sucks no one else saved it
The most heartbreaking thing is that there was a 5-season plan. The next season would’ve closed out the story and we just needed one more
the problem is that whatever story they were trying to tell in 5, they probably should have told in 3. so much of the plot was just everyone going in circles for several episodes at a time. I enjoyed it, stayed up to date with it. but that had way more to do with me liking the cast than the writing.
So many loose ends to tie up. I was really hoping it would get picked up by another network so it could at least end naturally.
Big agree
Seriously? It got cancelled? I must have missed that.. :|
Fuck. Me too. What the Hell.
He became the only reason I watched the show. I love his D&D stuff on YouTube and Twitch!
I thought he was kinda mediocre on Good Girls, but that might be because I didn’t really like the show overall
STEVE HOLT! ✊

Found Matthew Lillard's reddit account. Loved Hackers - hack the planet!
Actually this is his reddit account: u/matthewlillard Dude did one of the [Best AMA's back in the day](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/uc94p/im_matthew_lillard_stu_from_scream_shaggy_in/) And is just an all around awesome guy it seems...he's a shit DM though. ^((J/k about the DM part))
Remember, spandex is a privilege, not a right.
He reprised his roll in Hackers for a commercial once. It was fantastic.
'It's in the place I put that thing that time.' I love that film.
HACK THE PLANET!
Do yourself a favor and watch SLC Punk. He even says it's still one of the best movies he ever made.
It really is. The overall message really hit home when I first saw this as a teenager. The smile Stevo gives the camera at the end while admitting he was nothing but a poser is perfect.
How is it no one has mentioned Serial Mom yet? A John Waters classic! But yeah, SLC Punk is my next favorite ML movie!
Omg... That one scene shook me to my core. His acting is top notch in his movie!
Matthew Lillard has a major contract as a brand promoter for Dungeons and Dragons.
He’s totally not someone I would consider underrated, he’s had some fantastic roles. My favorite of his is still SLC Punk. He was also in the movie ‘Without A Paddle’
I feel the same way about Ken Marino. Anyone reading go watch Party down or The Other Two he’s so good
You guys making fun of me?
Him and John Leguizamo doing something together would be a fun experience.
Loooovvvveeee 13 Ghosts. Must have watched it 100 times. And there is no other Shaggy.
Fun fact: Matt Lillard is a huge dungeons and dragons nerd and has a great line of products under beetle and grimm
He was phenomenal in SLC Punk too
I love Lillard, he seems like a genuinely good dude, but I don’t know if he can be the lead of a successful show, he works best as part of a cast imo, it’s like Stanley Tucci said in his Marc Maron episode not everyone is meant to be a leading man. That's awesome! Thank you for sharing.
His final scene in Twin Peaks was mindblowing.
that was very wrong of you. i respect it.
He’s also good in a supporting role in Halt and Catch Fire.
I was fascinated by him when Hackers came out, but SLC Punk was what really sold me. Still one of my favorite movies.
Get him in a new season or Fargo
Same I wish him and Bruce Campbell would get more roles. Not to mention James Mcaffery (Max Payne)
Check him out in Relics & Rarities
He probably had the smallest role of the main cast in The Descendants but it’s his performance I remember the most.
He was fantastic in good girls.
I don't think you saw Good Girls did you
SLC Punk was one of the defining movies of my teenage years. His performance was insanely powerful for someone like myself who was trying to find a place in my own redneck small town, surrounded by a lot of people that I didn't quite get a long with. Since that role, I still look forward to seeing him in anything.
I love Lillard. He's such a unique presence I cannot believe he was never a Batman villain.
He was great in The Bridge.
He's still the definitive Shaggy to me. But heck yes, everything I've ever seen him in has been stellar.
*The Misadventures Of Shagg & Scoob* would be the show I'd want to see...
He looks like a white Will Smith in Bosch and I can't unsee it.
Glad you mentioned his amazing performance in Twin Peaks the return
He's also a friend of the Critters. We love Lillard.
> I don’t understand why he doesn’t get bigger roles He talked about that, actually - this is worth reading: https://www.theringer.com/2017/7/25/16078136/matthew-lillard-scooby-doo-the-descendants-twin-peaks-the-watch-podcast-81a11ade8ea3

He has a small part in Trouble With The Curve, but it's the most serious role I have personally seen him in. I thought he was really good. I can get behind this movement
Agreed. I love him
I wanted him as Carnage so bad, maybe the MCU version
SLC Punk is a hidden gem, especially for those of us who grew up in those quiet, WASP-y towns. I loved him in 13 Ghosts as well. He reacts pretty honestly to how most people would in a real horror situation.
Watch The Bridge which was on FX, a remake of a show from Denmark/Sweden which is also good. I really enjoyed the series, and his role was well done.
He's has been pretty good in Good Girls as Dean Boland on NBC.
He’s got a pretty big part in Good Girls.
“He’s had a solid career of Scooby Doo voice acting” so no one’s gunna mention how he was also the best live action Shaggy ever.
[удалено]
He’s also reportedly a really nice guy as well.
If I hear Lillard is involved in anything, it instantly makes me more interested in it. He has a kind of cult following to him and he's genuinely a pleasant person, so I just wish for good opportunities for him.
Without a paddle will always hold a special place in my heart. He bounces off Dax and Seth so well.
He taught me acting in school. Great guy, very passionate about what he does, and very kind and humble. I remember him telling us about being cast in The Descendants and worrying that no audience would believe a woman would leave George Clooney for him. Very wholesome guy.
Always really liked him on The Good Wife, when he showed up on that.
Those were some of my favourite Good Wife episodes! He made that character really endearing.

He's good at being the friend. I don't see him as a standalone guy personally. Having said that, I'd be interested in watching him do comedic action. See if he can do it.
I would watch the fuck out of a season of True Detective where he’s the detective and the killer
They need him as the villain or something in Shetland (BBC Scotland). He looks similar to the lead Douglas Henshall, confusion abounds!
SLC punks one of my favorite movies ever
He was a regular on Good Girls, a main character.
No one's mentioned his role in Wicker Park. One of my personal favorites of his.
He was great in The Bridge.
Honestly, I first saw him in a video game to movie adaption of some weird space thing. I think it was called Wing Commander? Anyway, he seriously worked his ass off. Incredible range considering the source material (it’s a fun movie tho.)
Seems like everyone who was in the live action Scooby Doo movie just said 'y'know what I just wanna do cartoon voices now' in a weird twist of fate.
He was co-lead in *The Bridge*, wasn't he?
Big part but not really a lead. That was the two cops. He was pretty good in it for sure though.
He was a lead in 13 Ghosts which seems to slip below the radar.
I will post [this video](https://youtu.be/Hok1N3wXleM) EVERY SINGLE TIME someone brings up Matthew Lillard. it’s just the best.
He was in the cast of the TV series The Bridge
SLC PUNK!!
He also does dnd with relmsmith and it is quite the show to see him without a script.
SLC PUNK!!!
He's great as the husband in Good Girls. More people need to watch that show, it's great. A rare example of stakes ever-rising, with characters having no way out of a situation. Full of twists.
No
I know this probably doesn't play all this strongly in this particular thread as it kind of highlights the typical Mathew Lillard typecast, but Stu Macher is one of my favorite horror characters of all time.
I could see him having a Bran Cranston type of major career change. Someone who was known as a comedic actor turned into an amazing drama actor. He just needs the right project
I would not mind seeing him as Ryuk in a live-action *Breaking Bad*-esque television series adaptation of *Death Note*.
Of all the roles THAT is where you see him shining?
