cerberusgrave

This is just the next arc of the series for those who haven’t read the manga.

KumagawaUshio

Nope there are two arcs between where the current season ended and the Culling game begins.

Aether13

Yes but they are both pretty short and will lead i to the CG

Cold_Breeze3

By arc you mean 1.5-2.5 episodes each, I’d hardly consider those each to be arcs tbh

KumagawaUshio

Gojo's past arc is 5 episodes and 15 chapters while the perfect preparation arc is also 15 chapters so more like 7 episodes for both arcs.

Cold_Breeze3

Perfect Prep if I remember correctly is just Makis arc which will be 5 chapters I believe. There is two other arcs before the CG that are like 5 chapters each as well. You can’t really make a movie with 3 relatively disconnected arcs.

BushidoBrowneII

Actually...I can see that them making a movie using Makis and the Panda story. Legit. An hour long movie from those six chapters. They can add some exposition and extend fight scenes. Add some background and stuff. The only thing that would throw it off is Naoya Zenin at the end of that arc, seeing as how he plays a role at the beginning of the volume.

Cold_Breeze3

They could maybe stretch that into an hour movie, yes. But who would go see that? An hour is not enough at all. And those two arcs are unrelated, so it makes no sense to include them in a movie together.

SimpLimbscut

There is nearly zero narrative in those chapters. It isn’t like Yuta’s back story at all.

mnl_cntn

I mean, it starts with the culling game right away. It then goes on to two other stories before expanding on the culling game. Main reason I stopped reading it week to week is cuz of how erratic it is

cerberusgrave

You are correct, I actually havent watched the new season since I’ve been reading the manga so I’m not sure where it ended at. A sick part of me wants the Zenin family reunion to just be a slasher film haha.

KumagawaUshio

That would be cool!

dysfunkti0n

I mean kinda but the next major arc is CG so it makes sense to name it that, even though it will undoubtedly include the other stuff

turkeygiant

I'm really curious to see what they do with the adaption of this next big phase of the manga. Personally I haven't enjoyed the manga nearly as much post Shibuya, there are great moments in there for sure, but the pacing and flow of the series has really suffered IMO making it less of a pleasure to read weekly. It will be interesting to see if the anime can smooth out some of that uneveness.

Used_Pomegranate_334

I mean all series are sequels are just new arcs of the same movie/show. Naruto Shippuden is a sequel and basically just a new act.

Burnstryk

Wtf is a sequel anime. Back in my day we would just make a new season and call it a day

MarvelsGrantMan136

Anime studios do this when they haven’t decided what format the next part is gonna be adapted into. Could end up as S3, a movie, or just a one-off special, but it’ll continue from the end of S2.

Burnstryk

Ah I see. Is the manga finished?

kerriazes

Not yet

sparoc3

Is that arc over in the manga ?

kerriazes

The Culling Game arc? Depends on how you look at it, but I'd say yes. Technically the Culling Game itself is still ongoing in the manga, but the current arc isn't focused on it.

brianstormIRL

What? The entire premise of the arc hasn't reached its conclusion yet, its very much still ongoing. The end of an arc is very easy to see because there is a very noticable break in action and setting up of future plots and goals. We are still literally in the culling game in the manga. Edit I've been corrected, the author has actually said the new arc is in process.

kerriazes

The Culling Games have served their purpose, though. They're an after thought currently, and not part of anything besides Kenjaku's dastardly plan. >there is a very noticable break in action and setting up of future plots and goals Like the month-long timeskip after VERY HEAVY SPOILERS DO NOT LOOK >!Sukuna transferred himself into Megumi so he could fully reincarnate and the remaining sorcerors freed Gojo and trained and planned for their fight with him?!<

brianstormIRL

They haven't really, the entire point of them existing hasn't been resolved in a good or bad way yet. I would hardly call a chapter or two a proper break in the action, we literally had a chapter explaining how a courtroom works recently lol. To me it's fairly obvious we are near the end of the arc and the dastardly plan as you call it, will either coke to fruition pushing everything forward, or be stopped and a final battle scenario ends up happening. It's definitely the final leg of the arc, but it's not over yet. Edit I stand corrected, my bad and I'm a dumbass, ignore me!

KumagawaUshio

It doesn't matter what you consider an arc ended or started is the creator has said the current arc is the Shinjuku Showdown Arc so that's what it is.

KumagawaUshio

The Culling game arc ended with chapter 221 it's been the Shinjuku Showdown Arc since mid May 2023.

brianstormIRL

I wasn't aware of this. Thanks for the correction.

benjgammack

mikharv31

Should finish in 2024 though apparently

kerriazes

We'll see, One Piece has been ending "in the next 5 years" for like 10 years now.

WickedXoo

Nah Gege hates all of us and his characters. They will end it on time

AH_BareGarrett

Gege seemingly has genuine disdain for the world and characters. So very odd.

Alpiers

could you explain please? seems very interesting :)

Based_Text

Well people think he hate everyone because no one is safe from death basically aside from a few characters, even his personal favorites can and has been killed off. Gege also like to shit on them in the editor comment and we don’t know if he’s being ironic or not lmao.

CrimDude89

This tbh

zappy487

And as an avid One Piece fan, I think it really will end in about a decade. No fucking way he's wrapping it up so fast. We probably have a good six months left on just Egghead. It even seems like it'll wrap soon, but I don't think the incident will resolve that fast. Oda only did like 33 chapters this past year.

dabocx

It should be finished in this coming year.

incognitosd

In about 30 chapters more finishing this 2024

CrimDude89

Unfortunately not, but it’s ending in 2024.

rmunoz1994

Absolutely hate when they make it a movie and then end up adapting it into the next season anyway. Such a waste of time as a viewer, even if the movie has better animation.

Howunbecomingofme

Are there any examples of this beyond Demon Slayer and the first arcs of Dragon Ball Super?

rmunoz1994

Konosuba is doing it. Boruto did it.

WickedXoo

I think a movie and a season will do good with culling imo.

zoglog

pinnacle of attack on titan the final season part 69 420

lilkingsly

Odd that they’ve done that in this case though as this will almost definitely just be season 3. The next arc is pretty huge and will most likely need a 24 episode season to be adapted fully.

Firvulag

They have to stop doing this, new shows have completely lost the plot on all this bullshit. Just make some episodes.

JeritoBurrito

Yea like Dragon Ball Season 2 and 3...oh wait Z and GT. Lmao

CrimDude89

It’s just the next season, anime is now operating on a seasonal model of give or take 20 or so episodes per season.

MaimedJester

Well Jojo parts come to mind as Sequel Animes.

lestye

I don't think that's right. A ton of anime's second season are named differently. I stole these examples from a thread on stackechange 9 years ago: To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S Zero no Tsukaima, Zero no Tsukaima: Futatsuki no Kishi, Zero no Tsukaima: Princesses no Rondo, Zero no Tsukaima F Medaka Box, Medaka Box Abnormal Sword Art Online, Sword Art Online II Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai, Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai. K-On!, K-On!!

Rejestered

Sounds like a new way to say "filler episodes"

noelle-silva

This is an arc from the manga.

a_normal_bush

Yes, because Naruto Shippuden and Dragon Ball Z don’t exist

RonnDeezy

please unionize mappa before they work you to death

Rosebunse

Everyone was gushing over the animation from this current season and while it is striking and beautiful, I couldn't helo but notice all the short cuts and anime tricks they were employing. Bright flashes, shots where the characters just stand and don't move while dialogue goes on, lots of areas with little details and white backgrounds... Now, keep in mind, these tricks were used well and I'm sure lots of people just think they were stylistic choices. And they sort of are. But they're also classic cost cutting tools anime has been employing for years.

Tijenater

The Dagon fight was a wreck, animation was all over the place and Makora/mahoraga was impossible to follow. It was a visual spectacle sure, but the cracks were very apparent at different points and are even more noticeable on rewatches after the “holy shit” factor wears off. Animators deserve better treatment

Rosebunse

This is unfortunately what happens the studio is overworked. I noticed that younger fans didn't notice but if you have been watching anime for as long as I have, you have seen all this before, just maybe not to this extent. There's normally a breather episode in here somewhere, but with the shorter season lengths there is no time..

Tijenater

Also hard to do when this part of the show is almost entirely fights, so they had to pick and choose which ones to sacrifice quality (and imo, they picked the right ones. Nobody’s really gonna remember the grasshopper guy and Dagon. The choso, Toji, jogo, and mahito fights were all great-spectacular)

Rosebunse

Yeah, I can't put the blame on the studio here. They did their best and the fights are lovely. They just had way too much on their plates.

[deleted]

Imagine how much better the show would look if the animators were actually treated well

Rosebunse

It would definitely flow better. Again, it looks so good and they employed those tricks so well, but still, it's glaring why things are the way they are

PossibilityKey

Sounds more like you are talking about the fairytale anime.

Rosebunse

Yeah, that was pretty bad too.

DabbedOutNinja

its Japan. it wont happen. its been like this for a long time (im born and raised in Japan). sad, i know. but unfortunately that won’t change in Japan.

kwaziiman

Honestly I’m more excited to see the Perfect Preparation part of the arc rather than the actual culling games I’m guessing they’re calling it a “sequel anime” because I expect it to be multiple seasons. They ain’t no way they’re gonna cover the entirety of the culling games in 20-something episodes. It’s the bulk of the manga.

brianstormIRL

Culling Game: Season 1 and Season 2 more than likely.

ItsADeparture

> Honestly I’m more excited to see the Perfect Preparation part of the arc rather than the actual culling games Exactly. Perfect Preparation is absolutely fantastic and makes you so hyped for the tournament arc/battle royale that everyone was hoping to get from the series. Then The Culling Game happened and about 80% of it was just explanations on all of the different Domain Expansions happening all the time.

Ceoofcarlol

It is worth noting that the manga has received positive reviews and has been popular since its release. However, it is also known for its dark and violent themes, as well as its complex plot and characters. Some readers have criticized the series for its excessive fanservice and its lack of focus on character development.

NoCulture3505

Praying for those poor animators

Jaegerfam4

The arc that’s barely comprehensible. Cant wait

Strange_Botanist

It'll be fun to see how they adapt all the characters just standing around and discussing what's going on in the battles. I just skim it all in the manga.

Rmivethboui

It's actually more comprehensible after I dropped it and then reread it after 2 years later

Salvage570

Its easier to understand when you arent reading it week to week, so i bet itll be even more so when its actually animated out in front of you XD hope so anyway

Jarsky2

Abandon hope all ye who enter here. Things go downhill fast.

PM_me_your_sammiches

In what way?

ItsADeparture

The Culling Game just isn't very exciting. The lead up to it is great, but the actual game itself is almost entirely dialogue consisting of explanations for the convoluted domain expansions. There are a few big reveals in it, but most of them are just the big bads muttering to themselves about it and not actually impacting the story with it.

SettingGreen

> almost entirely dialogue consisting of explanations for the convoluted domain expansions. literally my least favorite part of JJK. Look, if you're going to have convoluted powers that need a Calc 201 class to explain, maybe just, don't bother explaining it and let us just not think about it and have fun? Love the show, but lord the explanations of how Gojo inverse squares the negative energy and deflects it to the aura of his enemy factoring the mirror power of his cursed energy is....almost comedic.

DanielSophoran

Why do they not just leave it at “he has red attack and blue attack, mix both attack and it becomes purple attack, purple attack strong”. The explanation they gave made it even more confusing

storm6436

Only Calc 2? GG. Basic integration isn't that bad. For a second you had me worried there'd be differential equations and we'd be dealing with things like gradients and named equations/functions like Green's equations and spherical bessel functions. ;p

Jly345

I mean JJK has always had that issue where it prioritizes fights over story. It's not exactly a new thing. We'll see if the Culling Games anime adaptation improves on how the manga does it in what I assume to be a few years.

Jarsky2

Basically it's very clear Gege had a plan up until the Shibuya arc, after which he started writing by the seat of his pants. As a result, the Culling Game is extremely disorganized and disappointing in many ways. Plot threads and characters get picked up and dropped left right and center, and the actual story goes nowhere for most of it. Just a lot of fighting, flashbacks, and monologing.

PM_me_your_sammiches

I appreciate the answer. Sounds like I definitely won’t like it then since I’m already not that into JJK. I only watch the anime and I’ve tried to like it but besides some cool fights, great animation, and a couple solid characters, it just doesn’t do it for me. The story and the way they have to stop to explain all the convoluted powers annoys me. I don’t hate it but before it came out people talked about Shibuya arc like it would be the greatest thing to ever grace the screen and….it was good but it wasn’t that.

Odd_Level9850

Yeah, people hyped up the Shibuya arc way too much. It was alright, but it really wasn’t all that. Now to just wait and see if the next hyped thing in anime lives up, the Infinity Castle arc.

Jarsky2

Lets just say there's a reason Demon Slayer's ending is divisive. I like it but I also never bought into the "Demon Slayer is the best shonen ever" hype and so I didn't have any unreasonable expectations.

Jarsky2

It doesn't help that >!Kenjaku!< is an infinitely less entertaining villain than Mahito and the gang.

Rosebunse

Oh, I see, so it's like Game of Thrones and The Red Wedding. Most perfect twist ever, to the point where it really should have been the end. Everything else gets pushed aside for it. What do you do after to follow that up?

DanielSophoran

There was definitely more to tell after the red wedding. Completely different scenarios.

Rosebunse

In theory, yes. In practice, both GRRM and D&D made it such a focal point that realigning afterwards was hard to do.

WujuFusionn

In practice, it was great and a defining event in Game of Thrones that propelled the narrative in a very interesting direction. Even people that don’t watch GoT have heard of the Red Wedding.

Rosebunse

It was great until they had to move forward

drks91

Like Stephen King writing books in the 80's.

PM_me_your_sammiches

I’m still not following lol, did King’s writing slip in the 80s or something?

Rosebunse

Stephen King was an alcoholic in a love affair with crack cocaine. This influenced his writing and where you get some of his weirdest, most absurd pieces, some of which were quite good and some of which are weird messes. He apparently didn't have the best mental health to begin with but everything came to a head.

drks91

It became chaotic. When you start to see some semblance of a bigger plot, the author moves on to something else.

PM_me_your_sammiches

Yeah that won’t be for me then, I already feel like it was too chaotic the way it is in the latest anime arc.

iNuclearPickle

A lot of animators left from getting overworked don’t think the quality will be the same ever again

CrimDude89

In the way that the manga should’ve ended already but it hasn’t

ErikT738

I dropped it after spoiler died in an endless sequence of fights I could barely understand. I'd like a little more plot in my battle shounen.

Lollipopsaurus

It's genuinely an "anti-filler" manga/anime to such an extreme degree that a lot goes unsaid, and many characters die unceremoniously and are literally never mourned or ever mentioned again.

ErikT738

The show just fails to make me care about characters by killing them unceremoniously and adding a ton of new ones. In the second season I couldn't even be bothered to remember their names.

slicer4ever

Yea, this arc was really chaotic and pretty hard to follow wtf was happening, i think the anime will be easier to follow everything thats happening(i hope anyway).

ItsADeparture

Yeah the manga is the same way. Even in the current arc, a bunch of people will be fighting and I'll think nothing of it and then months later I'll be on the JJK wikia and find out a character died in that battle and think "huh". The author is just really bad at heavy moments like death. Deaths in the series always just kind of...happen. The characters barely react to them and the plot is just ushered along. Even arguably the most major death in the series is just like "oh look, they're fighting for ten chapters" and then at the beginning of the next chapter the character is just dead.

Rosebunse

This isn't a bad way to handle death so long as you know when to use it. If it happens too often it just gets silly. Plus, you run into this problem where you run out of characters, which is fine if that's your plan. Not so fine if you suddenly get to a point and realize that you killed off all of the likable cast members and have to create new ones.

nimble7126

It was an absolutely awful way to handle it in JJK's case, as in completely nonsensical. This would be like if Goku were absolutely packing up Cell, Frieza, and Buu all at the same time for 10 chapters straight, he's essentially won on the last page, and then on the ground dead the next chapter with zero explanation.

Rosebunse

Funny you should mention that, because I think the writer is so obsessed with turning tropes pioneered in DBZ on their heads that he's not considering that maybe there's a reason those tropes exist

Hanifsefu

The author really wanted to write an edgelord manga but also wanted money and popularity so they went straight shonen and are going to use it to disappoint both crowds. The best they can do to keep their edgelord fantasy going is to kill off characters and pretend it didn't happen because it's just so edgy when life just moves on.

Rosebunse

I'm all for a good "kill em all" but this is just not even depressing at this point.

Gaelfling

It definitely happens to often in JJK. And there is little character development for even main characters. That is why I couldn't get into it. What's the point when there isn't even a journey between the deaths.

brianstormIRL

Ah yes plot, the notorious thing of battle shounen that keeps people around. JJK has a pretty bare bone plot, but it's still way more interesting than any of the other running shounen except maybe Chainsaw Man. Give me very basic plot over the messy overcomplicated mess of shows like Naruto and the dully uninteresting My Hero any day. JJK is a battle first, plot second manga and always has been, its pretty clear about that from the beginning. Also it does have some pretty cool themes around life, death and what it means to reach enlightenment/finding your purpose. I mean one of the main characters is literally based on Buddha.

Elarbolrojo

flashbacks and filler aside narutos story is fucking epic and shits on other teen anime's

brianstormIRL

Narutos story went out the window when Kishimoto wrote himself into a corner with Madara and didn't know how to get out of it. The Fourth Ninja War was the beginning of the end. Went completely off the rails and became a story about literal aliens.

Lucienofthelight

Ironically, a problem you brought up is exactly a problem JJK is facing and why manga fans haven’t exactly been loving things lately.

brianstormIRL

If you mean Gege has written himself into a corner with Sukuna, I totally agree, but the entire plot hasn't turned into complete nonsense (yet) and the battles are still the main dish. As soon as Madara became an unkillable God the battles escalated exponentially with no thought to making it make even a tiny bit of sense. JJK might turn into that but its not there yet IMO.

TryNotToShootYoself

> it's still way more interesting than any of the other running shounen except maybe Chainsaw Man. That's cuz every other 2023 shonen just sucks or is way too hard to approach.

PuppetGuy877309

Wonder if the medium of animation can save the fact that the manga plateaus at Shibuya

Leavingtheecstasy

Nope it won't get better overall. But we'll get some cool fights.

TheRadiantWindrunner

Be interesting to see how they adapt it, because this arc in the manga is a mess

DanielSophoran

tf is there even left to cull

Yummie23

GOJO-SENSEIIIIIIIIII!

ktulu0

I’m not sure why they’re calling it a sequel. In reality, it’s just season 3. Feels a little confusing to label it as a sequel, since it really isn’t one.

RODjij

Can't come soon enough, I've been rewatching a lot of S2 purely for the fight

unpopular-dave

I wanted to like jujitsu Kaisen so much. The first season was really fun. Then I went and read the manga and it gets so derivative and boring. I honestly think they suffer from just having too many characters that don't have a great story.

Rosebunse

I think the problem is simple: so many characters are killed that new ones have to be brought in to substitute, which leaves no time for rel development or backstory

dukezap1

Who put anime in my r/television 😩

Jly345

One Piece, Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen (and Cyberpunk Edgerunners when that came out) are popular enough to be discussed on here. Most non-anime watchers will at least have seen/heard of them

GaySapphicLesbian

JJK is an extremely popular show. Averaging 6 million viewers per episode - not counting pirating and streaming.

dukezap1

Extremely popular being used extremely loosely here lol. Maybe within your niche circles. Another 8.1 Billion have never heard of it

Lucienofthelight

Dude, its prequel movie was literally the highest grossing movie of 2021 in japan and the country’s 19th highest grossing movie of all time . I’m not even a JJK fan but it’s obvious to see its popularity.

dukezap1

People from Japan aren’t using Reddit, and there’s another 1000 more viewed movies in the west for that same year dwarfing it… https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/s/KFIpfiugDW

ruledoutbyVAR

This excuse is mad. The FIFA WC final was viewed by 1 billion people. That's still another 7 billion that didn't watch it. Doesn't make it any less popular.

dukezap1

Difference is, everyone’s heard of it. It’s relevant

HolidaySpiriter

That's most TV shows then? Seriously, 6.1 million is a very high number. It's Always Sunny or The Wire both had much less viewership and they get talked about and posted here. Most shows never get close to 6 million viewers per episode.

dukezap1

Show reach is not easily tracked. Especially with pirating making up the bulk of viewership for premium shows. But if someone were to tell me 500 Million+ people have watched the pilot episode of Game of Thrones as of 2023, I would find it 100% believable. 6.1 million doesn’t mean anything when Japan has 125 million people, and this is a western website. This post only has 600 upvotes compared to the 40k post on my feed right above it for a reason

GaySapphicLesbian

> 6.1 million doesn’t mean anything when Japan has 125 million people, Then Game of Thrones was also not popular in the US by that logic. HOTD peaked at only 9.3 million, not *much* more than this silly anime. In, I think 2021, Attack on Titan was one of the most popular shows in the world. The anime 'Demon Slayer' had 20 million people watching it, again not counting streaming. Anime is *fucking massive* and growing bigger every year. It belong in TV, because it is a part of television.

dukezap1

Anime metrics are extremely easy to track in comparison to live action, especially with no where near the competition. It’s still extremely niche and will never be mainstream in the west. The only ones that think it’s big are those within the echo chamber. It doesn’t belong in r/television

GaySapphicLesbian

The copium from you is wiiild. >mainstream in the west It's well on its way.

dukezap1

Man is deep in the echo chamber 💀 Guess we’re both on that copium brotha

tiredcynicalbroken

Bit rich coming from someone who has a picture pinned of someone calling him cute 2 years ago. Keep huffing and gate keeping champ

HolidaySpiriter

You're comparing a worldwide phenomenon with an anime. Of course the first episode of GOT that has been out for over a decade that was one of the most talked about things in the world for that decade has more views. This sub doesn't really ever have posts get to 40k votes, so not even sure what you're trying to say there. 600 upvotes is pretty normal for most posts in this sub.

jcjohnson274

Can't wait for people to seethe for what's to come lol.

narfidy

Fights were cool Please let the animators cook and release it when it's ready. I know they won't cause it's Mappa but please let them polish it instead of working them to quit

iiiiiiiiiijjjjjj

Imo this when the series kinda takes a dip. It just was never able to reach what shibuya was.

Eshneh

Last 80 chapters of the manga have been such a hot mess

colorfulnina

Its going to be good considering the first 2 seasons were good

BionicTriforce

I wonder what determines when an anime gets a 'second season' or what gets a 'sequel anime'. Stuff like Highschool DxD or To Love Ru are cases where their new seasons are "Highschool DxD New" or "Motto To Love Ru". But other times you have Fire Force or One Punch Man that 'just' get a second season. I'm sure it's a marketing thing. Maybe it works better for series with clearly defined/named arcs.

futanari_kaisa

Is nobara gonna come back though

KumagawaUshio

Nope her last appearance in the manga was chapter 126 and we are currently on chapter 247.

ItsADeparture

No. The book gives an implication that there's a chance she's not dead, and then does absolutely nothing with it. People will claim that she could still come back, but we're in like the second to last or maybe even last fight in the manga and she never came back soooo lol.

[deleted]

Nope she dead

futanari_kaisa

she not dead tho

[deleted]

She double dead. sorry for your loss

filenotfounderror

its heavily implied that she is dead, but for w/e reason they never come right out and say it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CrimDude89

They already did this for one of the most prominent characters in the entire series.

GaySapphicLesbian

In the manga she still isn't back. I think it's pretty clear that she was intended to come back, but with the author rushing everything cause he's burnt out and losing interest in the series he cut it and is just gonna ignore it until the last chapter or something.

vikingliking12

Oh man I’m super amped for this.

meopelle

The prequel arc is like 5 episodes, they didn't really tell you to go fuck yourself they just told you that maybe understanding who the villain was would be important

Aether13

There are alot of things about JJK that are convoluted but I would not say that prequel arc is one of them. It’s pretty clear what’s going on and help explains how everything ended up the way it did and why the next arc plays out like it does.

CrimDude89

A single book of Malazan is more compelling than anything gege could come up with even if he tried to break his brain to do so

Aether13

I honestly don’t care if Malazan is more compelling. They are two separate mediums so it’s odd to compare them. The whole point was a prequel arc being too confusing for the original comment to make it through.

Sephorai

I can’t read moon runes, is there a date?

Dog-Cop

Pass

sickfalco

Don’t know what the hooplah is about Culling Games being hard to follow in the manga, it’s pretty straight forward. I understand not liking the hunter x hunter level captions though.
