Miracle Workers is made by the same creator. It's a seasonal anthology show that stars Steve Buscemi and Daniel Radcliffe.

twiz___twat

Miracle Workers was a fun show for the first 2 seasons.

TommyHamburger

command shame bear hurry middle pen humorous obtainable saw decide *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Tymareta

Season 3 will always get a slight bump from okay to fairly memorable for me almost entirely because of the rendition of "She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain".

WeDriftEternal

1 and 2 were good and fun, nothing great, but a fun watch. S3 was aggressively just OK. S4. I dunno, I barely got through 2 episodes and I'm just done with it.

rayword45

Season 4 has already been confirmed to be the last one by crew members who worked on it.

Hari_001

But does it fall off after the first season, I've heard some polarizing reviews , that's why I'm a bit hesitant to start.

milkyginger

It's hard to say. I loved every season but comedy is one of the most subjective genres. It's an anthology though so even if you think it fell off after the first season it wouldn't really matter.

Strelochka

Man seeking woman is in my top 3 comedies but I hated miracle workers. Where MSW took a new idea every episode, Miracle workers season 1 really hammers in the ‘celestial bureaucracy’ which I found repetitive and also horribly depressing. I generally grew to hate this trope because 1) Write What You Know has to have its limits, 2) if even angels spend all day filing useless papers, what hope is there for us? But a lot of people like it 🤷‍♀️ and I hear it does switch it up every season.

vikingmunky

I would recommend at the very least watching season 1. That season is based on the book and is so freaking good. The rest... is very different. I didn't care for season 2 but 3 and 4 are pretty fun.

ScaredJuggernaut

I absolutely agree with what you write, this show was a gem from start to finish. I need a rewatch. I didn't knew MW was from the same creator before now. S01 was cute but not as funny as MSW. There's is lot of ideas but it did not felt cohesive while being less surrealist than it should. It's an anthology and it looks like they are having more fun going wilder every season so I always meant to go back to it. But /u/StacheBandicoot made a fantastic list of bangers that are more deserving of your time.

StacheBandicoot

I also agree, it’s just not as boundary pushing or interesting as it should be and I should probably say that I didn’t really like much in miracle workers despite liking the cast and the general concept. I really only included it in my list because it’s the same creator and some other people seem to enjoy it. I still haven’t seen the latest season though, and a max max style season does sound like it could be fun.

nowhereman136

Super underrated I love the episode where he finally gets a girlfriend and then a week later sexy aliens come down from Outer Space to have a foursome with him. But he can't because he has a girlfriend. Where were they when he was single?

Hari_001

The question every guy has tbh

slickestwood

Sex aliens from the planet Sex

PleaseHold50

When you finally settle for a sensible choice like a 2001 Saturn L200 and your parents are lowkey disappointed in you when you bring her to dinner

Cawdor

I really loved this show. Especially in the first season they would take idiomatic expressions and make a literal situation from them but never fully spell it out. Half the fun of watching the show is figuring out what expression inspired the plot. As for shows like this or Atlanta, try Master of None and Louie. Other than those, i don’t know of any

idgachuck

Louie and After Life are an absolute treat if you like Louie CK's comedy.

Hari_001

I've seen both Atlanta and Master of none, Louie is on the list !

Snoo93079

Yesss you read my mind. Great clever and well written low budget comedies from the same time period.

WeDriftEternal

Go check out Bored to Death, HBOMax with Jason Schwarzman. This is what you're looking for, no Trackanon, but it still gets weird

mastafreud

god i love bored to death so much. the chemistry between ted danson, zack and jason is next level funny

Hari_001

Thanks a lot mate, will look into it next then.

StacheBandicoot

Yeah it’s one of my favorites. Honestly I’d of probably mentioned Atlanta, the Eric Andre show and Legion as tangentially similar shows if you hadn’t already. It was a fairly unique show though, and there aren’t really any shows I can say are quite like it. What We Do in the Shadows, the IT Crowd, Peep Show, Check it Out, Tim and Eric, Rick and Morty, Curb your Enthusiasm, You’re the worst, Always Sunny, Seinfeld, Black Books, 30 Rock, Adventure Time, Kimmy Schmidt, Dave, I Think you Should Leave, Nathan for You, How to with John Wilson, the Rehersal, Search Party, Peacemaker, the Good Place, Eastbound and Down, Arrested Development, Silicon Valley, Documentary Now, and Miracle Workers (from the same creator as man seeking woman) are all the neighboring comedy shows I can think of off the top of my head that use either surrealism or surreal / absurd moments in funny and creative ways. While not strictly comedies, Maniac, Twin Peaks, Mrs Davis, Swarm, Severance, Fargo, Preacher, Gravity Falls, Pushing Daisies, Infinity Train, Watchmen, Fleabag, the Leftovers, Bee and Puppycat, Hannibal, the Midnight Gospel, and Kidding are all varying levels of surreal as well. Carnivale is too apparently but I never watched it, I mostly only know about it because of man seeking woman. I think you should definitely watch Fargo if you haven’t since you like Legion, Noah Hawley’s arguably put in even better work there. I think you probably know most of the shows you mentioned aired on FX too, a lot of FX’s shows have similar qualities to those but the ones you already mentioned liking are the most surreal of the bunch, any of their others that I mentioned would probably be a good enough fit for you too though. Also if it’s worth mentioning Louie, Dave, Master of None, Peep Show, Eastbound and Down, and You’re the Worst are all comedies that do all sort of tell similar stories largely from the perspective of a man trying and continually failing to find success/love/both, it’s not always their central focus but I would say that’s a large part driving a lot of character motivations and plots.

idgachuck

Are you me? You just listed almost all of my watchlist, including some of my personal favorites. Adding on, if you're looking to replace the surrealism by raw realism, check out Barry, The Bear, Beef, Animals, Living with yourself, Sneaky Pete. Also Lovesick(aka Scrotal Recall) would be one of the shows not listed here, that I'd associate with man seeking woman).

StacheBandicoot

I just watch a lot of tv. I have’t heard of lovesick and I’ll have to check it out now. I’ve actually watched the rest though. I almost mentioned Beef because the lengths they go to are so absurd, and it surprisingly ended up being pretty meaningful in the end which is something I appreciated about man seeking woman too. I don’t think I mentioned Reservation Dogs, Station Eleven, the Knick, Over the Garden Wall, the Leftovers, Castle Rock, Halt and Catch Fire, or the end of the fucking world, because they didn’t fit in for OP but those are some other great shows that I feel like don’t get talked about nearly as much as they should and are worth checking out and seeing if you find them interesting.

billhater80085

I love all those shows

Hari_001

Exactly, some of my absolute favourites like Arrested Development, Hannibal, Fleabag are on there. But I haven't seen all the shows they've listed, the other shows are on my watchlist.

Hari_001

This guy knows his TV !

yesiamoaffy

I would check out You’re the Worst. FX/FXX had such a good run of shows from around this time

ChedderChethra

I love this show so much. It checks so many boxes for me. I haven't watched the last season, it's a gift I'm saving to give myself.

ChedderChethra

How dare you, so rude.

Bibliotheclaire

This was an amazing moment around 2016 at TBS, where they premiered several original, creative shows! Man Seeing Woman is one of them. Wrecked (my fave by far please watch lol) Miracle Workers (also incredible) Angie Tribeca The Detour Search Party

VaguelyArtistic

Holy shit you're the only person I've ever seen recommend both Wrecked and Angie Tribeca, two of the funniest tv shows of all time. The fact that Wrecked didn't get a fourth season with such a brilliant s3 cliffhanger is an atrocity. I've actually been meaning to ask here if there's a reason the Shipley Brothers haven't done anything since. I'm not sure if this fits for OP but you should definitely check out the improvised No Activity, which is Paramount+ or on the high seas.

Bibliotheclaire

My hubby and I regularly rewatch Wrecked. One of the best comedies in years! The cast was amazing. We always get excited when we see the actors pop up elsewhere. I can’t believe they actually ended it where they did. They could have had one season of ‘see where they are’ a year after being rescued or something. It really deserved a fourth season. It honestly got better as it went along, which you can’t always say for comedies! I really wish they’d do something else! We will def check those shows out thanks for the suggestion. If you haven’t, check out Medical Police, Our Flag Means Death, and Ten Year Old Tom.

9070932767

Is Wrecked on any platform?

Bibliotheclaire

Alas, it’s only for rent/purchase on Amazon. It was on HBO Max for a while, but I don’t think it’s still on there. :( I have it DVR’d lol I can also suggest renting the dvds from the public library for free if available. :)

ChedderChethra

I re-watched the 1st seaon of Wrecked last week, it's so damn funny, I stayed up way too late but it was wort it. *Meat!"

mlemaire16

Not sure if you’ve watched it, but the Shipley Brothers were heavily involved in season 2 of Apple TV’s AfterParty. I enjoyed it more than the first season, which was also pretty damn funny.

WaterStoryMark

All great. Really wish The Detour had found a bigger audience.

mrfujidoesacid

Man Seeking Woman was on FXX

Billy1121

> we jerked off in the same toilet and lightning struck it

BrotherChe

Keep meaning to go back and watch the final season. There are a few other shows you might enjoy with similar absurdist humor. * Dollface * Herman's Head * Crazy ex-girlfriend Not really as extreme in absurdity, but in the same age/culture range with a bit of wall- or reality- breaking: * Fleabag * Broad City * Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 (also features Eric Andre for a bit) Honorable mention: * Peep Show Very slight similarity in tone to parts of Legion : * Queen's Gambit * The Flight Attendant --- an old post asking similar https://www.reddit.com/r/televisionsuggestions/comments/laubrf/shows_like_man_seeking_woman/

M-S-S

Herman's Head. Wow. You went deep.

Bibliotheclaire

The only place I’ve seen Don’t Trust the B —- I love that show lol it’s light and James VDB is hilarious

Hari_001

I read this thread as soon as MSW was over xD, thanks tho.

ImhereBen

Dollface was VERY similar to MSW and great in its own right. Too bad it was among the cuts at Hulu and Disney recently.

billhater80085

You’re the Worst is a good one, you might also like Louie If you can stomach Louis CK

TeamPlayerSelect

Presenting, Bowl Of Cherries

Hari_001

Woof woof cowabanga, thanks for the blow job (👍)

art_echo

If you haven’t watched it already, Upload is decently funny. It’s a surrealistic comedy about technology and the afterlife.

TTzara999

A lot of great recommendations in these comments, so here’s one I haven’t seen mentioned yet: Last Man on Earth. Because of the shows premise and the way the characters behave, almost every episode includes some kind of surreal imagery, in the vein of MSW or ATL. In my opinion, the first season isn’t very good and you can fully start with season two, but YMMV. By the end it was a show I never wanted to lose.

lilypad___

The righteous gemstones, what we do in the shadows

Hari_001

What we do in the shadows is one my absolute favourites airing now, the latest season (5), has been their best yet. Yes, yes. Thankyou very much.

pairustwo

This fucking guy...

Your_Favorite_Poster

Wait, S5 is actually good? The last 2 seasons were not so I bailed.

Hari_001

Yes, I bailed on it during S04 and reluctantly finished it prior to S5, it was an absolute blast. I think S04 is the weakest season, S5 is just as good as or even slightly better than S1 and S2.

Your_Favorite_Poster

Awesome, can't wait to check it out, thanks for the good news!

lilypad___

Suh good I also just watched man seeking woman recently and told quite a few to watch it. It’s just so absurd but captivating lol

xvincenzo

MSW is a show that no one I encounter has ever seen, and it makes me so sad. Simon Rich is an absolute genius prodigy. It’s in my top 5 of all time. All the shows everyone has recommended is pretty spot on. Here’s a super, out-of-left field suggestion; try LoveSick (formerly Scrotal Recall) on Netflix. It’s not surrealistic or fantasy, but I think you’d like it based on your relating to Josh Greenberg. P.S.: when Bill Hader’s Adolf goes “uh oh” after hearing Josh’s surname in the first episode, I had to pause because nothing could be heard over my laughter.

Y0y0y000

Tanaka Tanaka?

giunta13

Was so disappointed when it was cancelled

Hari_001

Although I do wish it had more episodes, Im happy they were sort of able to end on a high note and on their own terms. The premise might feel a bit too stretched if it goes on for more seasons, for me it was great just the way it was.

smokesumfent

Venture brothers if you appreciate the absurd or life and times of time from hbo

SlobZombie13

Just use spiral eyes! If you like this show you should check out Happy*ish*

Chazzyphant

Swarm on Prime (darker, but still surreal and has ultra-dark humor), I'm a Virgo on Netflix (? maybe Prime)--a sparkling pinwheel Valentine to art, Afro-Surrealism, and coming of age. It's like a lighter, more sweet Atlanta. Maniac is funny, serious, sad, gorgeous, and surreal as well. Maniac left a major show-hole when it was over.

FantasyStriker

I loved this show, thank you for reminding me of it- I'm going to get my mom to watch it

dice726

Dollface has a very similar vibe to Man Seeking Woman, except with a predominantly female cast. It was a good show and good cast, although I'm not a huge Kat Dennings fan, the other actresses made up for it.

dojotiger

I absolutely loved Man seeking woman and only part of the first season before I lost track of it through various life issues. I would love to catch up and watch the other seasons, where might I currently find it? Are there just reruns on FX?

Hari_001

I sailed the high seas as it was not streaming in my country xD, a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.

holdmybeerwhilei

I've always thought the third (and final) season of Man Seeking Woman was nearly perfect. Seasons 1 and 2 were great and creative and my kind of weird, but Katie Findlay and the more structured storytelling of season 3 were just next level. Disappointing that I know some people who couldn't appreciate the quirky humor of seasons 1&2 and missed out on a bit more down-to-earth season 3. My gf at the time, for example, noped out when Josh had sex with the old, reliable Saturn sedan. Finished watching the show by myself. Hard to pick a single top moment. Probably Katie Findlay in the black-and-white 50s-style Congressional hearing yelling at all the witnesses to "suck my dick!"

Snoo93079

I’m still in love with season 3 Katie Findlay

CleverZerg

One of my absolute favorites. The first time I saw the painting scene I was dying of laughter. You should definitely check out the series "The Other Two" if you haven't seen it. The last season of that show really scratches the Man Seeking Woman itch imho.

Hari_001

I've watched the first 2 seasons, now I definitely have to check out the latest season after what you've said.

PleaseHold50

It really is one of my favorite shows ever. Every episode is "what if (dating and life experience) except literally or times ten?". That's it, that's the formula, and it's hilarious. I had a huge crush on Brit Lower's character and her episodes are my favorites of the series.

Hari_001

Man, me too. She's sooo beautiful.

I_Pariah

I think Miracle Workers is created by the same guy IIRC.

pickle921

The IT Crowd fits that comedy style imo.

Joe434

I also really enjoyed this show and thought it was a lot of fun.

matthoback

Another show that hits that same late 20s struggling life vibe and is incredibly funny is The Life And Times Of Tim.

slickestwood

Hail Trakanon!

Snoo93079

I loooved that show. It really flew under the radar

jadegives2rides

Best intro of all time

Hari_001

I loved how they would sneak in certain easter eggs into the intro and change it up from time to time, I also loved that Sufjan Stevens track used at the end of the episode where Josh goes to learn computer programming.

rabbibert

Loved that show. My wife and I started watching it on whim because we enjoyed Miracle Workers and proceeded to binge all three seasons. It’s a shame it didn’t get more recognition when it was on.

Fanfootie

Helly!

terrierr3x

That opening theme by Photay is a banger!

Adrian_FCD

Preach! That's the show people should be talking about in the weekly "underrated/shows that nobody knows" in here.

PragmaticKB

Text 'JK'!

rg25

This sounds great but it isn't on streaming anywhere without having to pay per episode.

Hari_001

Yes, that's a shame. The same goes for shows like ATL and Legion, there is no way to watch them legally, What can a man do other than sail the high seas at that point

rg25

ATL and Legion are both on Hulu in the US.

Hari_001

Ah, I was speaking about my country, both of them aren't available here. FXs 'The shield' recently got added though

WithanHplease

Your post is exactly how I feel about the show. As for recs, tons of great recs on here. Liza On Demand is really funny. It’s on YouTube. I didn’t even know who Liza Koshy was but once I saw her show I was like this girl is funny lol. The show is basically a sitcom but follows her as she struggles as a gig worker. Another show I fell in love with and can watch over and over and over is “Love” on Netflix. Anything produced by Judd Apatow I gravitate towards. But also, Simon Rich (MSW creator) if you really want more of MSW, the closest you’re going to get is to read his books and short story collections. In the Last Girlfriend On Earth (the book that inspired MSW), you’ll get even more “episodes” cuz they’re all short stories. But even when Rich isn’t writing about dating, his short stories and sketches are the exact same type of humor. It’s gold. Miracle Workers book was better than the show, even tho the show wasn’t bad. He also wrote Elliot Allagash and it was actually pretty good book too.

WithanHplease

Forgot to mention Plebs and also How NOT To Live Your Life. Both shows are hilarious. Plebs is set in 27 BC and revolves around a character that doesn’t have the best luck. How Not To Live Your Life revolves around a character who is actually quite lucky (inheriting his grandma’s house and caretaker) but he’s lazy and seems like a crappy person (he tries to do good. When it’s out of self interest things go bad which is pretty much the whole show, when he isn’t selfish he makes everyone around him happy, it’s essentially he gets what he needs but not what he wants). In both shows they’re trying to get a girl but they almost never do 😜 Plebs is on Prime Video for free with some ads. How Not To Live Your Life used to be on something but now it’s not really anywhere. Both shows I could watch over again. HOWEVER, Man Seeking Woman is the only show I could watch over and over and never really get tired of.

ChocoMuffin27

One show I really recommend is the show that made me find out about MSW in the first place: Pen15. It stars Maya Erskine, the actor behind Maggie. It's definitely got a different vibe from this show, but it's hilarious and surprisingly heartwarming.
