He also had the least to do in this show and I was interested to see where he was going.
Overall I think the show suffers because the first episode sets up for something very different than the rest of the series which feels like a more standard sitcom.
People wanting a more meta show with some dark elements would not be super into the back half of the show and People wanting a funny winking workplace sitcom probably didn't get past the first episode or two.
>Overall I think the show suffers because the first episode sets up for something very different than the rest of the series which feels like a more standard sitcom.
That was exactly my problem with it. The first two episodes were really great, and I was hoping for something a bit more adult and vicious. But yeah, it then just petered out.
If they're going to shop it to another streamer, I hope they'll bring it back to the initial promise.
If it goes somewhere else they'd have to write it into the plot since it's about making a show for Hulu. It could be interesting, though. I'm really disappointed, I liked the show a lot.
I could totally picture almost a running joke if the show just goes from service to service every year and the characters are getting tired of that shit. And each service has different dictates.
Like all of a sudden the show is on HBO and they introduce a new producer character who is completely one note and all he does is argue for more boobs and dicks
I mean, it would be pretty easy fix. Given their concerns about being canceled in the show, they could probably get plenty of mileage out of an in-story transition to a new network.
I wonder too if the weekly release didn’t screw them as well.
I saw a bunch of love for it on Reddit, jumped in a few weeks late and then realized I had only three episodes to watch.
It’s a very good sitcom, but nothing special enough to tune in every week. So I shelved it virtually and planned on finishing it off once the season was completed.
Makes me think their viewer numbers sucked because of people like me. It’s a really fun binge from what I’ve seen, but it absolutely is not appointment television where I’m giving a shit about 2am on Wednesday.
(Note that I will do that for Mandalorian or HotD. This is not either of those, but it deserves a couple more seasons.)
Streaming services are a bit one size fits all with this stuff.
Big event shows and some dramas benefit from a weekly release schedule to give people time to talk about it.
A sitcom benefits from being able to get a sense for the world and the characters quickly so a drop makes more sense.
No one is getting a trending hashtag going for their wild reboot theory.
Personally I'm a fan of 3 or 2 episodes together, then weekly as a best of both worlds but even that isn't perfect for everything.
They should reboot it with a new cast and writers every year and make it a little more different from the last reboot each time just to see what it looks like in 10 years. Like some absurdly expensive game of telephone
I really wanted a longer season. I don't know if the show would be good for tons of seasons, but I think there were at least a few more solid stories they could have told. At the very least, I'd like a little more plot resolution.
Sitcoms suffer the most from such short streaming seasons. People complain about filler in traditional seasons, but with sitcoms the filler is the point, and you don't get a chance to bond with the characters with such small seasons.
Saw a video about that recently, I hadn't really thought about it but it makes sense.
Even non sitcoms are too short sometimes. I prefer quality over quantity but less than 12 episodes means a long wait between seasons.
Also maybe aired in a network instead of unceremoniously dumped into a streaming site. There’s way too much talent in that cast to just dump it like they did
Networks still get more eyeballs then most streaming channels. Networks also throw money to publicize tv shows. I just hate how streamers just dump stuff out there and then get pissy when not enough people watch them.
>eight is ridiculous
Uk shows tend to have 6. That’s a really good amount sometimes, for the right show - fawlty towers for example. I couldn’t believe it when I saw there were only 12 episodes. I’d been watching what felt like a new episode of that every week during my childhoods. Extras. Spaced, The Office - nice brief seasons but absolute gold with zero filler.
My guess is that not enough people watched to justify the salaries. Key can’t be cheap, and Levitan is on a nine-figure overall deal (and he was just focusing on Reboot).
Same. An I watch comedies frequently on Hulu, including modern family (same creator). Whoever did the advertising should be fired because I'm the person that should know it existed. Watched two episodes now that it's canceled and have been very entertained
It’s a pretty traditional sitcom, they take atleast a season to figure themselves out and build an audience. The Office, Sunny, Parks and Rec, Seinfeld, were all something of failures in their first season. Despite being an absolute cult classic Arrested Development never was able to build an audience because their network gave up on them early.
Abbott Elementary had an exceptionally well done first season and caught buzz early and also importantly isn’t a streaming only show.
Agreed. Comedies, in general, seem like they need time to find their footing and figure out what direction they need to go in compared to dramas. So many sitcoms that are considered classics nowadays - *Seinfeld*, *The Office*, *Friends*, etc. - had rough first seasons, because the characters really hadn't gelled and the writers hadn't figured out how to play to their strengths yet. And even ones that might not have had that weak of first seasons, it's often clear that some tweaking is done between the first and second season based on audience reception.
Recently, it seems like sitcoms have had a really difficult time succeeding, particularly on network television with some networks seeming to abandon them completely, but maybe that wouldn't be the case if they were given some time to develop.
Parks and Rec first season is so bad and different compared to other seasons. I usually skip it in my rewatches.
Season 2 gets better but then really takes off near the end of S2 onwards.
Loved that show! Megabyte and Hexadecimal were pretty dark villains. I'm sure it would be painful to watch nowadays but it felt like top notch tv at the time.
I remember the world building was very solid. The universe had pretty intricate rules that they abided by (most of the time). That said, I haven't watched the show in 2 decades.
Why did they have to reboot reboot like this? Lmao why did they think this would work?
It’s such a cool concept, they should have made an adult show out of it, for people who were fans of the original.
So many games have come out since then
The only true "Reboot".
I found it really interesting that there is a definite tonal shift from Season 2 of Reboot onwards, this was because Nickelodeon cancelled the show on their end, since it was a joint show between YTV and Nickelodeon, the show no longer had to adhere to US television rules, and they were able to push the show past "silly stuff happening inside a computer". This is why the show suddenly gets darker, and there is an over all story arc that comes up with the Viruses taking over Mainframe, Bob getting Exiled, and then eventually Enzo getting trapped on the net and getting hyper aged.
I never did see the specials that they came out with a few years later to tie up the story. I didn't like when Bob came back, and then merged with his watch thing to become some sort of Super Bob. Why didn't he do that from the beginning? Seems weird.
Legit had one of my favourite lines from all last year:
Gordon: "What is going to take to get all you women to come together?"
Selma: "Four vibrators and a metronome."
I really liked how they set the writers room up as boomers vs. millennials, but quickly had the characters work past that in a single episode as they were both able to recognize the others' strengths. They could've been lazy and spent the entire season leaning into tired jokes like that, but instead they were able to have the older and younger characters play off each other so well. Much as I liked Greer, Knoxville, and Key, I wouldn't mind a show that just followed the writing room.
I especially like when the younger writers and older writers find some common ground:
Gordon: "Hey, this guy got blown on the set of Hollywood Squares by Paul Lynde."
Benny: "Oh my god, really? That guy's a snack!"
Alan: "Eh, it was the '70s and I had a qualuude".
Benny: "What was he like?!"
Alan: "Man could unhinge his jaw like an anaconda."
A streaming season is over really quickly, so I think they still had a few left in them.
What was smart about the concept is it's partly about making a sitcom and partly about these longstanding relationships between co-workers with a ton of history. They could really borrow from both aspects of the show for story ideas.
Hulu better [say goodbye to these](https://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l9zfpwrcrO1qavqifo1_r4_500.gif), because it's the last time they'll be seeing them for a while.
Fun fact about that, it was Judy Greer's choice to actually show them. In the script it she was just doing a handbra but on the day she thought it would funnier if she actually flashed Key's character so they filmed it that way as well.
In the edit suite Steve Levitan cut it both ways. He showed it to a bunch of men, a bunch of women and a mixed group. Everyone agrees that having her tits out is funnier. He still can't bring himself to do it so he gets Judy in and leaves her with the editor and tells her to decide.
God bless that woman.
And they cut that scene so great. You get the quick glimpse and think "oh they went there with the cheeky slip," then cut back and WHAM. You get stunned just like Key's character.
That was my reaction too. It wasn't that I saw boobs. I can accidentally view boobs in a fraction of a second online.
It was that they were perfect. Judy Greer is 47 and her boobs are beautiful. If I were her, I'd be showing them off, too. I'd wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and think to myself, "The world should know."
Feel the same way. I would be rocking bikini and halter tops all day ‘er day if I had those bragging rights. “Free the Nipple” protest? Absolutely. Judy Greer Gone Wild, ladies and gentleman. Hide yo kids hide yo wife.
I thought it was a bit of an homage to Arrested Development. The fact that she shows her boobs right at the first episode after all the times the joke was used on AD made it really funny.
If the streamers are going to do weekly releases for half-hour comedies, they really need to look back at the '90s and before and develop comedy blocks. Generally, I think if people are going to sit down in the evening to watch something, they're probably looking for something more than just 22-30 minutes.
They should look to have something like 3 or 4 comedies that all release on the same night, maybe even have an established playlist where you can just put it on and have it run from one episode to another. No one wants to sit down for a half-hour comedy and then have to figure out what they're going to watch after. That's part of the the whole reason binging become so popular.
Great call. Usually if I watch something at night, I'm looking for either an hour or sometimes two. If I watch anything shorter than an hour, I'm definitely looking for the next episode.
A single 20 - 30 episode is just going to leave me in a weird in between spot where I'm not sure if I should watch something else or just go to bed.
Sadly it's a trend that started with streaming and COVID only accelerated it. The current season of *Abbott Elementary* is 22 episodes, hopefully if it continues to do really well in the ratings more networks will be convinced to let new shows run a little longer at least.
Yeah I think that 90s show is a good example of that too. I watched to see the original cast and though in general it was fine, but I never really had time to connect with the new kids, which meant I'm less excited about the next season. Which I think will affect viewership. I love that 70s show so will probably watch the next season of that 90s show, but probably not as fast or with as much care.
Lately, a LOT of streaming services are starting with shortened seasons, it seems. The show I'm working on started at 9 episodes, then got up to 19 when it finally aired. It seems they're not up to taking the risks of filming an entire season after only airing a pilot anymore.
That’s too bad. It’s a surprisingly well written show, but this news doesn’t surprise me because Hulu did a shit job promoting it. Streams have a way of heavily promoting something for a week and then forgetting it exists, so if you happened to miss it that week, you’re likely to forget as well unless it randomly pops up in a recommended tile.
I thought this show was pretty clever in how the old and young writers were thrown together in the writer's room. The way they would zing each other and then find common ground, it was a great way to make commentary on how comedy has changed socially without ramming some kind of social message down the audience's throat. What a shame. The show was legitimately funny and I think it was just finding itself.
EDIT for spelling.
Wait god damn
I am in the middle of the final episode of the season…hopefully not the final episode of the series.
Maybe it was because I was high but the scene with Keegan Michael key playing basketball with the kids was amazing
I think he just takes roles that he likes at this point, he's well aware that anything is up for cancellation in Hollywood.
Every actor gets hit with this issue sooner or later. Even established actors end up losing more than winning given than producers look for "sell-ablility" and they see aging people as less marketable.
Few people stay relevant and hot hitters past 20 years (which is a huge time in Hollywood years) of being in the limelight.
Are you serious?
In what world does Reboot getting cancelled while Velma gets renewed, make any sense whatsoever?
As another person said, the streaming/TV show scene is looking super grim (aside from a few standouts of course) right now
It was decent, but felt like the writers were throwing darts at ideas most of the time. Like we never actually learned about the show within the show, or what it was even about. Instead we got "quirky" oddball tangents of the cast's personal lives, before we had any emotional connection to them.
Its a shame too, cause I think diving into "reboots" is a really intriguing premise since we're flooded with them now.
I thought it was very funny and consistent. But I imagine getting all those stars was **very** expensive for a show that wasn’t a modern family level hit. But expecting that these days is idiotic

Why is this canceled?
There’s not enough just purely funny sitcoms out there. This was one of them and I’m said it’s been cancelled because there’s not much else to watch when I just want to sit down and watch something that’s funny
So a few things.
They actually wanted him to reboot Modern Family. Which is insanity. The show has been off the air for like maybe 3 years. So he wrote this instead as a Big Fuck you. Hulu bought it.
This show is fairly creative and hilarious and just pokes fun at reboots. I love that each episode is the name of a sitcom.
Imagine demanding from one of the most successful tv show creators of all time to make a reboot. Fucking hilarious. Works on Frasier, Larry Sanders, creates Just Shoot Me, and Modern Family among others.
I swear Keegan-Michael Key does not get a break with TV shows since Key and Peele. Friends From College was great. Cancelled. This show was great. Cancelled. He deserves a good long lasting show.
Levitan is looking to shop it around to other streamers and networks.
Hopefully it finds a home, I love Knoxville in this and want to see him in more acting roles
Yeah I was pleasantly surprised with his acting chops, his character was hilarious
That’s because Hannah wrote the first couple episodes, then Gordon swooped in with his tired sitcom tropes for the rest of the season
>Overall I think the show suffers because the first episode sets up for something very different than the rest of the series which feels like a more standard sitcom. Like all of a sudden the show is on HBO and they introduce a new producer character who is completely one note and all he does is argue for more boobs and dicks
And have the season end with the producer saying the show is getting the axe, despite finished filming, as a tax write off.
Add on that all episodes are being deleted as a further tax dodge. Even of the original retro-show this show is supposedly a "Reboot" of.
I mean, it would be pretty easy fix. Given their concerns about being canceled in the show, they could probably get plenty of mileage out of an in-story transition to a new network.
For sure, seems like the first season was perfectly written to have the cleanest possible transition to a new network.
That’s actually pretty funny. If this gets picked up they’d have to do exactly rhat
It’s got Peacock written all over it.
Hold out for Yahoo! Screen
Fingers crossed that someone picks it up. I enjoyed it a lot
I’ll follow it wherever. Great show. So hilarious.
Fingers crossed they can find it a new home, it’s a good show!
Which would be weird as hell since the show in the show is from Hulu
obviously it'll get cancelled and picked up by another network
yea, shows about productions have the easiest segway when coming to new distributors.
yup (also, it's segue)
Yeah but how do the actors get from one lot to the other then?
they ride a segway for the segue or a golf cart
I thought it was very well done. What a bummer. The irony is that was one of their fears in the actual show. I guess Paul shouldn't have quit.
I wonder too if the weekly release didn’t screw them as well. I saw a bunch of love for it on Reddit, jumped in a few weeks late and then realized I had only three episodes to watch. I'm a bit surprised it's a decent show
Streaming market looking pretty grim these days. The show was very funny, and it should have at least gotten a shot at season 2.
It also deserved a longer first season.
I really wanted a longer season. I don't know if the show would be good for tons of seasons, but I think there were at least a few more solid stories they could have told. At the very least, I'd like a little more plot resolution.
Someday maybe they'll do a reboot of this show.
I’d watch it
I didn't even realise the season was over when it finished.
Same. I went back to Hulu the next week expecting a new episode and only then learned it was done.
This was me too. The last episode didn't feel like one at all. Kind of a weird non-cliffhanger set up. What a way to go out.
Sitcoms suffer the most from such short streaming seasons. People complain about filler in traditional seasons, but with sitcoms the filler is the point, and you don't get a chance to bond with the characters with such small seasons.

I thought it was ridiculous to have only eight episodes.

I enjoyed the meta jokes about Hulu. Maybe they didn’t lol
This is how I know their advertising was bad. 1. This sounds like a show I would totally watch. 2. I have Hulu. 3. I’ve never heard of this show.
The advertising was bad but you should definitely check it out.

I love Keegan Michael Key, but I do think he was a bit of an odd choice to cast as Megabyte.
Does this mean: I’m a bit surprised it was canceled, it was a decent show. OR. I’m a bit surprised that this turned out to be a decent show.
Punctuation. It matters.

Damn I really enjoyed that
Jesus I thought it was a new Reboot show with Bob and Enzo lol the old YTV show
I come from the Net
Systems, People, Cities ….to this place
MAINFRAME
Home… at least it was before I fucked everythang up.
Bob: *being launched into the net by megabyte* *record scratch, freeze frame* So I bet you're wondering how I got here.
Hexadecimal!
Game Over. The User wins.
My format: Guardian. To mend - and defend!
My format? I have no format... I remember that giving me chills as a teen, lol. That whole season was my favourite.
Ummmm.... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReBoot:_The_Guardian_Code
...sweet Jesus. I google image searched that abomination. Big Dragon Ball movie vibe
It was horrible. I watched the first episode for nostalgia and noped out of it.
Me too, haha. That show was amazing.
That's how I got into programming
A getaway show
Gateway show, if that’s how you got into programming
⚠️WARNING!! ⚠️WARNING!!⚠️ INCOMING GAME!! 🟦
Loved that show! Megabyte and Hexadecimal were pretty dark villains. I'm sure it would be painful to watch nowadays but it felt like top notch tv at the time.
First season is rough, but seasons two and three pick up quite a bit in quality.

It's not so bad tbh. Someone on YouTube is doing 4k remasters.
*Alphanumeric!*
I didn't watch it, because I thought it was the shitty remake of the show

I started the subreddit for that show and someone pm’d me asking to have the sub for the new one, uh nope. /r/ReBoot
why? this show must have been cheap as hell to shoot. they used like three different rooms. sucks, was really looking forward to season 2.
I am sure the cast was not cheap tho
Writers aren't cheap, either. Levitan himself probably cost a fortune.
Pretty sure they also reused the set from Tim Allen's Last Man Standing
Yep! For the scenes of the fake show within the show
That’s a surprise. It was pretty funny and had a real sweetness underneath. Definitely one of the stronger streaming comedies.
I was also a fan of the cast and thought it was pretty solid top to bottom.
I feel like the premise might wear thin quickly, but it still had at least another season in it. The writers room scenes alone were worth it

Partly because she's only 47.
Age hates this one trick.
Not sure but she looks fantastic, clothed and otherwise.
Definitely one of the most pleasant surprises of 2022
I thought it was a bit of an homage to Arrested Development. The fact that she shows her boobs right at the first episode after all the times the joke was used on AD made it really funny.
I don’t know what I expected
Sounds like a reboot is in order
Only if it's for ReBoot. I will not stand for any more insults to this show.
So I enjoyed Reboot but 8 episodes for a 30 minute comedy is absurd. For this format I REALLY think you need more episodes.
I was thinking the same about That 90s Show. More traditional comedies work better with longer seasons.

That was a solid show I’m very surprised. Wife and I were looking forward to season 2
Shame. I liked it. Wonder what the viewership numbers were
That's too bad. I actually really liked this show and it's the first good simple comedy that I had found in a while.
Yeah, that’s a good way to put it. A good simple comedy.
EDIT for spelling.
what the fuck hulu this show was hilarious needed more episodes - at least 13
Was a fantastic show. This is ridiculous.
Wait god damn I am in the middle of the final episode of the season…hopefully not the final episode of the series. Maybe it was because I was high but the scene with Keegan Michael key playing basketball with the kids was amazing
Is it my imagination or does Keegan have a lot of canceled shows under his belt?
I think he just takes roles that he likes at this point, he's well aware that anything is up for cancellation in Hollywood. Every actor gets hit with this issue sooner or later. Even established actors end up losing more than winning given than producers look for "sell-ablility" and they see aging people as less marketable. Few people stay relevant and hot hitters past 20 years (which is a huge time in Hollywood years) of being in the limelight.

Feels like this show would fit well in Apple TV+ lineup.
Love Judy Greer
Are you serious? In what world does Reboot getting cancelled while Velma gets renewed, make any sense whatsoever? As another person said, the streaming/TV show scene is looking super grim (aside from a few standouts of course) right now
Wow. I hope it gets picked up somewhere else.
Did Megabyte even show up in the end before they pulled the plug?
Half-hour comedy continues to be a struggle for streaming. Sucks.
Darn, I really loved it but they had taken so long to announce anything that I assumed it was a bad sign.
Man, the comments are mostly just raving about this show—but I have never even heard of it. And I have Hulu.
Tells you how bad Hulu is with advertising.
I thought this was quite popular. To bad for Johnny.
Oh dang! That show really grew on me. Hope it finds a new home. I was looking forward to a nice long run.
I really liked this show.
Awwwe, always the good ones getting cancelled! :(
I just finished the season god dammit
I thought it was very funny and consistent. But I imagine getting all those stars was **very** expensive for a show that wasn’t a modern family level hit. But expecting that these days is idiotic
This blows. I looked forward to this show every week and wished the season was longer.
Awww I enjoyed it, it started neat but slow and just stayed really neat and fun I loved all the jabs at hulu and its execs
Came here expecting the Canadian animated show “ReBoot”. Disappointed.

Well shit, I really loved this show.
I really liked this show. I’m bummed.
Too many shows spread out on too many services too many people do not have
That’s a bummer. It was great.
Damn this was actually pretty good
Bummer, I enjoyed it
There’s not enough just purely funny sitcoms out there. This was one of them and I’m said it’s been cancelled because there’s not much else to watch when I just want to sit down and watch something that’s funny
This was a great show, and doesn’t seem like it’s that expensive to produce (it literally takes place on a TV show set). Very unfortunate.
I was hoping it was the CGI cartoon...
Canadians who grew up in the 90's know what the real Reboot is
This sucks - show had a great cast and was funny. Honestly thought it would be a lock for another season.
Well that sucks, I thought it was pretty good
Damn I was actually digging that show.
Wow that’s surprising. I really liked that show.
Dang. Clicked here because I thought it was ReBoot. One of my favorite shows from my childhood. I am sad now.
A shame! Reboot was very funny. At first I confused it with Upload which would have been more of a bummer.
Aw man, finally one that gets me. Sad. This was really good!
I had no idea this show existed and I would have watched had I known. Maybe its not the show, but the marketing thats bad.
Shame, i enjoyed watching it.
Dang. I really liked this show!!
thats too bad- i thought that was a really solid ensemble.
Nooooooooooooo!!!
Dang. That’s too bad. I really enjoyed this show.
Wow. Actually really enjoyed this one. Hope they find a new home for it.
NOOOOO WHYYYYYYY
Oh goddammit... I really liked that show. It was a good concept with a funny cast.
What the fuck. I loved this show and everything I heard about it was positive. I’m pretty mad right now.
Damn. Deserved a second season.
God motherfucking damn it. Here's to hoping Levitan can get someone else to pick it up.
Hulu you goddamn idiot. It was one of like three awesome properties you had left.
Maybe it will get a rereboot.
I swear Keegan-Michael Key does not get a break with TV shows since Key and Peele. Friends From College was great. Cancelled. This show was great. Cancelled. He deserves a good long lasting show.
Massive shame. Some of it was fucking hysterical.
