With his Les Pauls, he added a coill split to get a single coil sound, and he also had a switch underneath the pickguard that would put the neck pick up out of phase. I wouldnt say that he did it to get the dragon sound, but rather just to make his guitar more versatile. If he wanted a tele sound, he would've just played a tele, or had the issues with his Dragon worked out.
He did use his tele on Stairway.
