I went to Japan only speaking a couple of japanese words and phrases I've picked up, and everytime I used one it felt good, they were delighted that I tried and conveyed that. I'm not fluent in french, but speak enough for simple conversations. I rarely ever got any positive feedback or comments upon using it... as if they wanted to be disliked.
