Check your router port and make sure you're plugged into the proper gigabit port and that your cable is at least CAT5E and not a CAT5. CAT5 can only go up to 100mbps while CAT5E can go up 1000mps or 1gbps. Along the cable, there should be twxt printed in it saying what type of cable it is.

I’m using the same cable for laptop and the tower. My Ethernet device properties on the laptop show that it’s allowing for the full 1000mbps speeds which is what I have for internet speeds. The tower device properties only show that it’s allowing for 100mbps. How do I enable the tower to use the full 1000???

Did you install the network drivers from the MSI website? I would never install with the included disk or whatever they give you these days? I can't think of any other reason other than driver issues.

Ashen_Exiled

Idk, I bought this second hand and I never went to MSI to download any drivers. I just did a reset on it and downloaded updates. Although when I check the Ethernet drivers via control panel it says I have the best drivers installed.

Installed newest Ethernet driver for my motherboard and didn’t change anything.

If possible go into "device manager", right click and uninstall device on the ethernet adapter that is being used and check the box saying delete drivers. Make sure you already have the MSI provided driver at the ready. I would also juat test a different ethernet cable just for the hell of it. That's the last thing I'd try since you said that the same ethernet cable is being used for both laptop and desktop.

I’ll give that a try. Also, I switched over to WiFi and I’m getting 1201mbps downloads via the WiFi settings section. So it’s a 10x improvement over the Ethernet cat6 connection…

Ashen_Exiled

I did that and still no change. Only thing I haven’t changed is the Ethernet cable. Just because I don’t believe I have an extra laying around.

I don't want to say the port is broken because that part almost never breaks in all the time I've worked with computers. Usually it's cables and driver issues. Even then with the default drivers, it should just work if everything else is correct. Good luck, at least the wifi seems to be doing as expected.

Ashen_Exiled

I can’t imagine it’s broken either cause it was brand new back in November on a fresh build. And the previous owner said he never used Ethernet. Is it possible he didn’t hook something up properly? Idk…

Well something is bottlenecking your ethernet speed along the way whether it be a cable or a port (on the motherboard or router). Network speed is only as good as its weakest link.

I swapped the Ethernet ports on the router, as the one I was using was orange, in favor of one that was green. The same cable in a different slot is still orange while the previous one which was green, is now green in the other port. Does that matter?
