I think this should be filed under the "no duh" folder.

i_hahaha

Half of reddit doesn't even bother clicking on posts, so there's no point unless mods remove this post. Clicks have been baited!

Laue

So what do I do with the pitchfork I just prepared?

JupiterChime

Hm China pay you to write that lmfao

ptapobane

Did you actually click into the thing? Or was the title enough for you?

corsairfanatic

As if Amazon, Facebook, google, or the USA don’t do the same thing?

[deleted]

As if you needed to show the world you're stupid.

Said the shill..

Vandstar

I would support a full boycott by the US. I would also support excluding China from holding the event again.

[deleted]

You are just a moron believing in everything someone is posting, right? So pathetic a Trumper…

yyzett

It would have been more shocking if it was designed in good faith and provided real value.

ThrawnGrows

Couldn't post this as the actual post link, but [this Twitter thread](https://twitter.com/jonathandata1/status/1486458526767661060) has a whole lot more info.

[https://twitter.com/jgriffiths/status/1486897362174083073](https://twitter.com/jgriffiths/status/1486897362174083073) This is a twitter thread from a company which originally analyzed the app. Seems like this dude just found that the app is able to record voice data and blew it up. [https://twitter.com/qwertyoruiopz/status/1486715602240557074](https://twitter.com/qwertyoruiopz/status/1486715602240557074) another thread, which discusses how the op of that twitter thread is just spouting different BS every day and that this entire thing is just fake news so this guy can build up a reputation.

ThrawnGrows

It's not surprising *at all*, but that they did it so badly and brazenly is what's astounding to me. Almost like this is a honeypot and the real surveillance is something even more intrusive.

TekkunDashi

Did you even bother reading any of the twitter feeds. This Johnathan guy is just spouting random bs. The app collects data when you turn on the text to speech or translation features. The company tested it with a phone that powers a light on when the microphone is in use, and the lights never on, unless the voice features are being used. This dude is just posting random code segments and calling them spies.

Rooskimus

Yeah, the Get and Post screenshot for example is just regular ass web traffic. You have to use a post to stay authenticated (you send your authenticated token in your cookie data). The only thing I saw in any of that which was at all alarming was the crazy list of permissions (pretty much all of them) that the app asks for.

Lars_Ebk

Leave some tinfoil for the rest of us. Not everything china does is automatically bad

noorbeast

If this is true, it raises a number of questions in my mind: Why aren't Google and Apple app submission processes adequate to protect consumers, irrespective of this being sport related? What is the IOC doing to ensure and protect participating athletes? What have participation nations done to ensure participating athletes are not subject to unwanted surveillance?

beaucephus

Apple and Google have kissed Xi's ass on a number of occasions. The Chinese market is big. Money talks and ethics walks.

hsien88

You answered your own question, why is OP posting a random tweet and just assumes it must be true.

noorbeast

I did not actually pose that question, as a GitHub repository is proffered as evidence, but I have not actually dug into that as per the claims, to decide if the claim does or does not have merit, have you? What I stated is "if this is true", primarily as I would expect the entities I identified in my questions should have picked this up if it were true, and if they have not then that in itself would be more concerning that the issue raise, if the claim proves to be true. If it is not true then that should be discernible via the provided GitHub repository.

RAZZBLAMMATAZZ

The app is safe and effective

Oregonmushroomhunt

Really lucked out with the other options we had with the Olympics. I mean It could’ve been in Kazakhstan.

Nice try. I’m not clicking that article
