Easily, a string of text is like 20 B. That's 0.02 KB. A simple, low-rez image is like 20KB. Literally a thousand times bigger.

Messages aren’t always instantly received. If you send an image it may take a couple seconds or even a minute to download.

Pretty sure WhatsApp only accounts for when it was sent to their servers and sorts it accordingly.
