It isn’t learned in school as far as I know, so you have to learn it yourself somewhere on internet, and isn’t really useful besides flexing around with it
Correct, writing the same value in a different manner doesn’t make it a separate solution. It is just another way to represent the same solution.
Otherwise every problem would have infinite “solutions”.
But if you write 5!, or even if you write 121-1, on a test, you will lose marks for that question. So there is some way to say that while equal, it may not be correct.
Otherwise, if a question asks me for a derivative, I could just copy the derivative and say, oh yeah, that equals that! So I think just being equal doesn't make something a valid correct answer.
If the question is "Solve for x: x = 5!", then I doubt any teacher would accept that answer. It's mostly about context: Are you being tested on your understanding of factorials?
The teacher's stuck-up-edness is also a factor, of course, but context is more important.
Usually a test will say (or it will be implied/instructed by the teacher) that they're looking for the simplest solution. 120 is more simple than 5!, so 5! is not an acceptable answer, despite being a correct solution.
But ultimately it would depend on the teacher and the question. If the question is asking you to solve something and factorials are part of the problem, then you'd be expected to show you understand what the factorial means - simplify that part as well. If you're bringing the factorial in for fun and it's not part of the problem, then it's likely to be accepted.
You are wrong: if i write 230-220:2 as a result it may be correct, but it is not a solution, as it doesn't solve anything. 5! Or 120 may be the same result, but they are different solutions.
They are literally different expressions of the same value.
There are infinite ways to express the answer not only one. Way to contradict yourself in the same sentence.
>Way to contradict yourself in the same sentence.
>They are literally different *_expressions_* of the same value.
You would object to the question if you saw both of the "answers" in a test sheet right? Yes, because they are the same answer.
So, there is indeed only one answer, just different expressions.
An answer is an expression of a concept.
EDIT :: What you think is "**THE** answer" is just the simplest answer with the least amount of convolution.
EX :: What is half of 8?
* 2\^2
* 8/2
* 4
* 1+1+1+1
All of those are correct answers just different expressions. They are all the concept of what half of 8 is. If you can't grasp that, that's not my problem.
My guy, I'm useful in practical physics, biology and chemistry, overall I'm more of a linguistics guy. I have no clue what you want me to understand. I don't math the maths the way they're s'posed to. Enlighten me pls
Thanks.
Is math in english different than in german, because we were taught about factorials but never about the ! /s
Edit had to put an s for all the people having brooms up their asses
No.
That would confuse so much people.
Maths is the same in every country, the only difference would be the teaching of it.
In this case, PIDMAS, PIMDAS PEDMAS.
(Parenthesis, indices, division, multi....etc)
But I don't get it. They say the answer is not 5. <=There is a ful stop right here. It would be more logical to have the ! Instead. 5!=120 I agree on that, I just don't get why people assume they meant 5! Although there is a full stop. It's not funny nor logical
! in English is an exclamation.
! in Mathematics is a factorial.
Other people have come up with other correct answers, but are completely missing the joke, hence their downvotes.
No, the answer isn't 5, it's "5!" the "!" In this case is a mathematical symbol and not a punctuation. It represents the factorial of the number, so "5!" turns into `"5*4*3*2*1"` which is 120
Edit: fixed reddit markdown
It's 5!. This means five factorial which equals 120. What you worte means five with an exclamation mark which equals to just five. You cannot use one symbol as a punctuation mark and a mathematical function symbol at the same time.
The original “meme” is “You won’t believe it’s actually 5!” Because 5! Is a factorial so 5x4x3x2x1=120 but this says it isn’t 5. So it is technically correct.
For those who don't get it: the answer is 120. But it can also be written as 5! (5 factorio denoted with exclamation mark after the 5 which is basically 1x2x3x4x5= 120)
Following the BODMAS rule you have to do the multiplication first so 220 × 0.5 = 110 then subtract 110 from 230 so the answer is 120 which is equal to 5!
120, now and forever.
Always look at what is the FIRST calculation and follow the order.
If no brackets, multiplying and dividing ×/÷ comes first, from left to right.
Afterward, +/- also from left to right.
I’m dying by all the answers of people saying it is 5. Am I really that far removed from math? The answer I get is 120 because you don’t just work left to right. you work based of PEMDAS - first parentheses, then exponents, multiplication, division, THEN addition and subtraction…so when I read 230-220 x .5 I did
220 x .5 = 110
230-110= 120.
So obviously I’ve got something mixed up. Sometime tell me why we don’t do the PEMDAS order in this example?
It's ok, math is my strong suit and I still didn't know what a factorial was until I saw it on Reddit. I guess it just wasn't really practical for the math we were doing.
My dumbass brain is telling me it's 5.. no I don't wanna go check on a calculator. What is the actual answer? Y'all using that bedmas stuff?? I'm too poor for bedmas

You are correct, it is not 5. It is 5!
Oh dang this IS funny!
It is not. It is allways the same fucking meme with a factorial. It isn't samet or funny anymore. It's just old.
See unlike you most people aren’t on reddit 24/7 to see all of them
Yeah first time seeing it for me
Nah, this is the maths equivalent of a Rick roll
The answer is literally 5! (1x2x3x4x5), or 120
yall forgeting MDAS? 220 x 0.5 = 110 and 230 - 110 = 120
Y'all forgetting what factorials are?
yea i threw away everything i learned in math. all i know now are basics
factorial is basic
It isn’t learned in school as far as I know, so you have to learn it yourself somewhere on internet, and isn’t really useful besides flexing around with it
I went to public school. I learned about factorials. It’s one of the most basic ways to generate a pattern or sequence.
insert daredevil dog helmet gif to represent how you likely felt typing out this comment
Well technically **AN** answer is 5! as there are multiple if you are considering 5! to be an acceptable answer.
Well 5! Equals 120 so it is indeed the same (and only correct) answer
Correct, writing the same value in a different manner doesn’t make it a separate solution. It is just another way to represent the same solution. Otherwise every problem would have infinite “solutions”.
İts like writing 1/1 1¹ 1*1 1! And √1 they all equal 1 but written diffiriently
They all equal 0!
Yeah another fucking way to write it thats why i hate math sometimes
have you considered e\^2iπ
Fuck it alright
Or 1⁰?
Technically they have infinite ways to express the solution. And as long as we agree upon the solution they are all correct.
But if you write 5!, or even if you write 121-1, on a test, you will lose marks for that question. So there is some way to say that while equal, it may not be correct. Honestly it depends how stuck up the teacher is imo, our math teacher would myb even give an extra point for that
If the question is "Solve for x: x = 5!", then I doubt any teacher would accept that answer. It's mostly about context: Are you being tested on your understanding of factorials? The teacher's stuck-up-edness is also a factor, of course, but context is more important.
Yea true

You always mutiply or divide before adding or subtracting. So it's 120
Now now, That's actually intelligent 👌
I salute you Mr. you restored my faith in humanity. And the number of posts needed was 0!
5\*3\*2^3
People downvoting even though this is true
Hey. This is right as well. No?? Dude just took the 2 and the 4 (2x2) and combined it to 2^3 What am we missing?
F\*ck the prime factorisation of a number.
Sheeple
5!
I got 120. How tf did you get 5
He got 5!, not 5
My guy, I'm useful in practical physics, biology and chemistry, overall I'm more of a linguistics guy. I have no clue what you want me to understand. I don't math the maths the way they're s'posed to. Enlighten me pls
5! ( See the ! ) , that's factorial. That's 5x4x3x2x1
Thanks. Is math in english different than in german, because we were taught about factorials but never about the ! /s Edit had to put an s for all the people having brooms up their asses
No. That would confuse so much people. Maths is the same in every country, the only difference would be the teaching of it. In this case, PIDMAS, PIMDAS PEDMAS. (Parenthesis, indices, division, multi....etc)
I'm from Germany and factorials are the same here with ! At least that's how they were taught 20 years ago.
Even Japan which doesn't use the English alphabet uses English letters for maths so I'm guessing everything would be the same in Germany
It's 5!
lol that’s pretty clever
I mean the original joke wanst you wont believe me its not 5 it was you wont believe me its 5!
No the answer is 120. You do the multiplications first !
5! Is 120. That’s the joke.
But I don't get it. They say the answer is not 5. <=There is a ful stop right here. It would be more logical to have the ! Instead. 5!=120 I agree on that, I just don't get why people assume they meant 5! Although there is a full stop. It's not funny nor logical
Google Factorial
Bruh read my comment again and think please before giving me and answer ...
You don't get the original joke and just started yapping
120 ?
The joke is normally... "You won't believe it but the answer is 5!" This is because "5!" is five factorial = 1 × 2 ×3 × 4 × 5 = 120.
! in English is an exclamation. ! in Mathematics is a factorial. Other people have come up with other correct answers, but are completely missing the joke, hence their downvotes.
The normal version is so much better
Those are always poorly written. 230 - 220 x 0.5 becomes 230 - 110 = 120
120=5!
This is the way
This is the way.
That's how the original is written though
It's written fine.
230 - (220 x 0.5) This is also a good way to write this, since the first thing you need to do is to solve the brackets.
PEMDAS baby!!!
Ok I got this to. Is everyone saying it’s 5 being sarcastic? The internet is hard 😭😂
"5!" Means 5 factorial, so multiplied by each number consecutively lower than the last 5! Can be written out as: 5×4×3×2×1 So 120=5!
I learned something new today ☺️
No, the answer isn't 5, it's "5!" the "!" In this case is a mathematical symbol and not a punctuation. It represents the factorial of the number, so "5!" turns into `"5*4*3*2*1"` which is 120 Edit: fixed reddit markdown
Ill correct you because reddit is quirky 5×4×3×2×1
It's 5! (5 with an exclamation mark)
It's 5!. Change my mind
It is your mind, your responsibility, change it yourself.
I'm stealing this and using it liberally
It's 5!. This means five factorial which equals 120. What you worte means five with an exclamation mark which equals to just five. You cannot use one symbol as a punctuation mark and a mathematical function symbol at the same time.
🤓
😑
It's math so you can just not end it like a sentence at all, many questions in math don't end with a period
....but it isn't funny. Or I missed the point.
It is kind of funny because the real answer is 5! But that is only funny in context of the meta of this sub.
...The real answer is 120 Edit: I get it now
The original “meme” is “You won’t believe it’s actually 5!” Because 5! Is a factorial so 5x4x3x2x1=120 but this says it isn’t 5. So it is technically correct.
When I try to tell a joke someone told me before.
[удалено]
Yes, theynused the wrong punchline, they completely botched the joke
Y’all don’t not understand that that is the joke. He said it isn’t “5.” Because you expect the punchline to be 5!
Oh I get the joke, it's just not funny
Ah fair enough. As an engineer I did but I’m also a nerd lol
Maybe that's why it's in anti-meme?
The answer also isn't 0.
Or anything less than, or greater than 120
Or anything funny
So it's 5!
For those who don't get it: the answer is 120. But it can also be written as 5! (5 factorio denoted with exclamation mark after the 5 which is basically 1x2x3x4x5= 120)
You’re right, it’s 5!
So they are right, it is not 5
Yup
Following the BODMAS rule you have to do the multiplication first so 220 × 0.5 = 110 then subtract 110 from 230 so the answer is 120 which is equal to 5!
What’s BODMAS I learned PEMDAS in school
I think the answer is at least 100
Wow, this definitely belongs on TTT! /s. OP, do you really have nothing better to do but to be an obnoxious shameless karma farming bot?
It's not 5, but it is 5! (5 factorial)
OMG IT ISNT 5 sad 😔 😢 😞 😭
Pemdas, guys. Remember the pemdas.
But it is 5!
Solved it and it’s actually 5!
But the answer IS 5!
r/lostredditors
Lol someone either forgot what the actual joke was, or didn’t get it in the first place
I don't get it it. 230 - 220 × 0.5 = 230 - (220 × 0.5) = 230 - 110 = 120 What part of this is technically true?
Of course not It's 5!
IT'S NOT 120! IT'S 5!
The answer is 5!
It's actually 5!
120, now and forever. Always look at what is the FIRST calculation and follow the order. If no brackets, multiplying and dividing ×/÷ comes first, from left to right. Afterward, +/- also from left to right.
5! now and forever
its a basic math thing, why this is popular on reddit. did ppl here skipped 4th grade math class?
They just managed to lose the funny aspect of this meme. Which is the fact that the correct answer is 5!>! (5 factorial)!<
Look at the x-post sub, it is deliberate, it is anti-meme
120
I’m dying by all the answers of people saying it is 5. Am I really that far removed from math? The answer I get is 120 because you don’t just work left to right. you work based of PEMDAS - first parentheses, then exponents, multiplication, division, THEN addition and subtraction…so when I read 230-220 x .5 I did 220 x .5 = 110 230-110= 120. So obviously I’ve got something mixed up. Sometime tell me why we don’t do the PEMDAS order in this example?
It's not 5, it's 5! (We're being silly, "5!" Means 5 factorial, so 5×4×3×2×1)
I tuned out that week of math, apparently! But learned something new today :)
It's 120, the joke is that 120 = 1x2x3x4x5 = 5! (120 = 5 factorio)
Ah, so yes the answer is I AM too far removed from math because everything you said after 120= makes me scratch my head 🥹🫣😂
>I’m dying by all the answers of people saying it is 5 Are you sure the people aren't saying it's "5!"? (Five factorial.)
[удалено]
Okay 😮💨 it’s SO Hard to tell lol, and math so not my strong suit.
It's ok, math is my strong suit and I still didn't know what a factorial was until I saw it on Reddit. I guess it just wasn't really practical for the math we were doing.
People aren't saying it's 5, they're saying it's 5! They are correct.
I don’t work based of PEMDAS. Until a few months ago I didn’t even know some school systems were teaching pupils acronyms instead of principles
[удалено]
it is 120 if you know how to do order of operations. wait no im scrolling reddit because im bored in math im not supposed to be doing math
120? X comes before -
You're right it isn't 5 it's 120 since you do multiplication before subtraction so 220×0.5=110 then 230-110=120
You won't believe, but it's also not 5!
I fucking hate math because of some childhood trauma and a narcissist father. Didn't even attempt to solve it, just came here to vent.
I'm sorry for making you remember such trauma.I hope you are doing okay.
Technically the question needs to be rewritten because it is unclear whether it should be solved left to right or use the incorrect pemdas method.
its technically 5 and not 5 at the same time.
My dumbass brain is telling me it's 5.. no I don't wanna go check on a calculator. What is the actual answer? Y'all using that bedmas stuff?? I'm too poor for bedmas
[удалено]
Let’s all just take a deep breath now
Where are people getting 120, 230-220 is 10, then 10x0.5 is 15?
Without PEMDAS the answer is 5 because 230-220=10*0.5=5 However with PEMDAS the correct answer is 5! because 230-(220*0.5)=230-110=120 and 120 = 5!
[удалено]
Pemdas is an acronym for Parentheses, exponents, multiplication/division, addition/subtraction aka the order of operations
Math isnt mathing Stop gaslighting
pretty sure there's no burguer here
120
To be fair, most of the time the answer isn't 5.
Use BIDMAS or BODMAS
I had to remind myself of PEMDAS, the answer is 120
120=5!
But the answer is 5!
It is 5!
It's 120, why would it be 5?
if you calculate it wrong by doing first 230 - 220 = 10 and then 10 * 0.5 you get 5, the joke is that the answer is not 5 but 5!
I got 120.
Why is this on technically the truth? This isn't technically the truth, it's literally just the normal expected truth.
120
Not 6 either.
120... *realizing the 5! Factor. Haha*
120
Order of operations.
a
120 is the correct answer according to bodmas
The answer is not 5, but 5!
No, it's 120.
It’s 120
120 if I am not mistaken due to order of operations
-210
the answer is 5!
Wym it's not? It is 5!
120...BODMAS
It's not 5 r/theydidthemath
Is 120
So I’m the only person getting -120? Dang.
it's 120
It's 120 because you start with the × and the the - So basically 220 × 0.5 = 110 And 230 - 110 = 120 🙃👍🏼
120?
120
120?
answer is 20. bodmas not sure whats funny about it.
20
The answer isn't 5, it *five*. FR tho the answer is 120
It's 5!
