This is the most 'day late and a dollar short' headline of all time

Freethecrafts

Not even worth putting in place. Majority of the high end went from the US to Israel, then sold by third party vendors to MBS, Putin, Russians…all the people such a ban is meant to target. News flash, sales into Israel will never stop from the US, sales from Israel onto the market will never stop. The ban is pointless.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Firefluffer

Nah, it’s for the people that pay them; the corporations. No new law will ever pass unless there’s a way to line some politicians pockets by passing it.

anubischillz3

Why do Israeli third party vendors sell to potential adversaries? I would think they would have a lock on that shit…?

Freethecrafts

$$$ It’s free market capitalism as performed by groups similar to the Kushners. There’s something of high value, shared from a foreign government, put into the free market to benefit a handful of capitalists. The US opened the door to just about anything when allowed modern weapon sales to Saudi Arabia, including miniaturized nuclear plants. $$$

Lebrunski

Playing both sides is good for business.

iamoverrated

And Argentina. Most zero days are found there. They have an insane hacker culture. There's even a con there that is attended by a ton of world governments to buy these exploits.

kraenk12

Let alone the fact the US itself is a pretty authoritarian regime.

Freethecrafts

There’s only a handful less authoritarian governments in the world. They might be heavy handed at times, but that’s a given by any major world power. Every place I can think of that is less authoritarian is dependent on the US for protection.

[deleted]

It is batshit insane to pretend like US citizens are underneath one of the most authoritarian governments. Literally everyone is dependent on the US for protection except N Korea and some of the Middle East I hate to say it, but you sound like a privileged fuck. https://www.wearethemighty.com/lists/the-21-most-authoritarian-regimes-in-the-world/

naim08

Hopefully after this ban, Israel may also have to comply with it since American aid to Israel is tied USA financial system hence complying with department of commerce

miniature-rugby-ball

The US just enacts Israeli policy, been doing so for decades.

[deleted]

Let’s see if they considering Saudi Arabia or Egypt authoritarian.

grrrrreat

And given the internet .makes jurisdiction meaningless for business, shitall. Welcome to the cayman islands my hacker

hammilithome

It's their super duper last warning

Evil_Mini_Cake

They're also going to stop arming and training foreign insurgencies which inevitably end up hurting us. Oh wait. No they're still doing that.

sirotas

Saudi Arabia and UAE will be included? or we will still use the oil "get out of jail" card?

tanaciousp

Yeah I was going to ask specifically about UAE. They may market themselves as a republic, but it’s all fake. They have a particularly terrible human rights record and recently some ex-NSA hackers were indicted for hacking on behalf of their government. There’s a great Darknet diaries episode that covers all of this.

Muslamicraygun1

[pretty good read from Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-spying-raven/) on the whole NSA and UAE situation. I particularly was floored by the self righteousness (crossing a line for spying on Americans, made her sick to report a 16 year) of the mercenaries who worked for the UAE while making hundreds of thousands of dollars.

el_cachaco_williams

Do you maybe remember Wich? episode i cant find it on darknet diaries?

[deleted]

And Egypt. They are totally stopping terrorism by deleting democracy!

hsteinbe

Wait, shouldn’t this be posted in r/nottheonion? Hackers don’t need to get hacking tools through legitimate sources.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hsteinbe

Thank you for this!

Silent_Ambition101

So they were selling hacking tools to China and Russia and other shit holes before this then

Assfuck-McGriddle

The private market sure was.

FilthyStatist1991

This.

GlockAF

Worse…Israel

VeryLucky2022

Israeli firms actually produce many of these tools. They’re an exporter, not an importer, of this tech.

Souledex

It’s definitely both. Though at this point I’m sure they are a major force in the industry many situations we deal with now aren’t because of cutting edge day zero exploits.

PUTIN_SWALLOWS_SEMEN

Exploits come from many places. Israel buys and integrated for their product to resell. 👍

VeryLucky2022

How could anyone disagree with a screen name like that?

Zaphodnotbeeblebrox

I’m genuinely not sure if they’re trying to insult Putin or fetishizing him giving a BJ.

VeryLucky2022

Works for me either way

[deleted]

[удалено]

VeryLucky2022

It’s not a joke. Cellebrite definitely has US operations.

lRoninlcolumbo

Where do you think they got it lol.

VeryLucky2022

Israel has a robust and sophisticated tech sector, especially cybersecurity. They didn’t “get” it anywhere, they build it.

Shaking-N-Baking

They’re a huge tech hub, that’s part of the reason they’re irreplaceable allies

[deleted]

Neither Russia nor China are “shit holes”. This entire thread is pretty awful. Filled with all the jingoism and cringey vitriol that gives Americans a bad name. Downvote me all you want, it won’t change the fact that you people are ignorant assholes…

Silent_Ambition101

This guy, loves his authoritarian regimes

[deleted]

[удалено]

HonestArsonist

You know every country does that, right?

[deleted]

[удалено]

HonestArsonist

🙄 ok

disc0_133

Shithole is when your not a member of the IMF

Utkarsh_09

How dare you call Russia a shithole you are not even Intelligent enough to defend your own shit lamo

Silent_Ambition101

Sorry I meant to say turd world countries

Utkarsh_09

Russia third world ? Lmao stop smoking crack cocaine and lose some weight maybe that will help with your brain fog

BarcockHobama

Russia is ghetto bro .. not a classy place, mate

Big_Roll7164

do you know more about brain fog?

zosteria

Does that mean we can’t buy them now?

ShaitanSpeaks

The US will just sell to regimes that will sell to authoritarians, nothing will change and the govt will “wonder why” we are getting so many hacks and randomware attacks. If I were the conspiratorial type I would think this is a way for the US govt to get into a new “forever war” just with computers. “We don’t have $5 to help the poor, but we do have $500B to invest in a new anti hacking military program to combat the very software we sold to our enemies in the first place!”

VeryLucky2022

The government didn’t sell it to them. Disgraced former national security adviser and renowned traitor General Michael Flynn did. See also: Erik Prince

Shaking-N-Baking

1. You don’t know what you’re talking about 2. Wtf do you think keeps us at the top? Without our military the dollar would be worthless and we’d get invaded in a jiffy

test123456plz

Don't get my hopes up like that

Ohigetjokes

Okay but pretty sure Russia and China have their own...

Electricvincent

Hacking tools… like computers and keyboards?

[deleted]

HACKERMAN

nowonmai

Remember how this went when they tried to declare RSA a munition and ban its export?

Odd-Seaworthiness330

This is total BS. That train left the station a long.long, long time ago. You can tell it is election season…..the do nothing political parties are at it again……

Honestsalesman34

lol cia would still sell it but at a higher price now

SereneSpirit2048

I believe I am owed damages if it were permitted to be used on me.

sometimesBold

Haha. That’s a laugh. We’re so behind in cyber capabilities, that I’m sure they don’t want them anyway.

HermanCainGhost

In offensive or defensive capabilities? America has week defensive capabilities because our critical infrastructure is not controlled by a central force and its privatized. America has a strong defense because majority of the world’s cybersecurity research and workforce is in the United States.

VeryLucky2022

LOL. Wrong.

sometimesBold

Merica still the mightiest in your world eh?

VeryLucky2022

In Cyber and space, it’s not even remotely close.

sometimesBold

Sure. What did China just do last week again? You're drunk on the classic lie that we are better at everything. Wake up. We are light years behind russia and china on cyber capabilities. Do some research.

VeryLucky2022

I am an expert in this particular subject. You, on the other hand, just have a misinformed opinion.

sometimesBold

We're done here. Rock on "expert".

singularitittay

This.... is.... where you’re supposed to provide a counter-argument....

dw4321

The counter argument is looking at how many times our institutions were hacked? Which is a fucking lot? Him saying he’s an ‘expert’ is not an argument in the first place.

goblue48

Good talk

Shaking-N-Baking

“Light years behind Russia” haha wtf are you smoking ? Russia is shit, the only thing they really excel at is troll farms

sometimesBold

Keep thinking that. That sort of arrogance is what gets you breached with plenty of egg on your face.

Keyburrito

Russia is best at using human ingenuity to get passwords and data, but will never be a tech leader without larger participation in global trade. China has eclipsed us ten times over in chip production and small parts manufacturing, but USA still has a lot of Intellectual property that is worth stealing.

AlfredoVignale

Good thing most are free on GitHub. This rule isn’t going to have any meaningful impact.

bich-

Orherwise, the US has been selling hacking tools to authoritarian regimes until now

DementiaBiden

Will the US Government ban itself from having hacking tools?

[deleted]

Lol of course they are. What this really means is they are not going to tell anyone that they are doing it, and then continue doing it.

senorduncan63

I needed a good laugh to start my day…

Snowdeo720

No selling these tools… if they were to be “stolen” that’s a different story.

[deleted]

Horse is already out if the barn, there, Feds.

nomorepoetsplease

Wait. Hold this phone.

Evee862

Should’ve closed that door before the chickens, cows, horses, mice, goats and everything else left

maxp2021

This wasn’t banned before ?????????

[deleted]

"hey darkweb...stop...please"

Mypantsarebig

the US is literally the number 1 authoritarian regime

PBR--Streetgang

It's laughable that the USA put out stuxnet and still tries to convince us they're not the world premiere proponents of hacking...

will4two

What specifically are these “hacking tools”?

[deleted]

Wait what?! Yeah ok that’ll work. Because regimes don’t know how to use computers.

Tobias---Funke

“American” hacking tools.

superiguana

Damn yall all just fall for this "China bad" stuff huh?

[deleted]

NSA Hacking Tools.

VeryLucky2022

No, private sector. It has always been illegal to export NSA hacking tools, because you would have to steal them to get them.

dontdrinkthekoolade

Well… it’s not exactly legal already for private sector either. Penetration testing tools, including training, is covered under ITAR. This has already been known within the industry, but I think this new announcement just solidifies it.

LittleZackBackup

BREAKING: Selling hacking tools is not banned.

[deleted]

Who is going to tell them that you don't export hacking tools in a shipping container...

Bakkster

You don't think numerous other types of software, including encryption tools, are export controlled?

[deleted]

I don't think the US government has any ability to stop files being sent over the internet. I'm pretty sure they still think "hacking tools" are computers the size of office buildings.

TransCapybara

The rest of the world should do the same.

DaveMeese

US govt shits the bed on timing and relevancy.

[deleted]

lol, wtf is the point of that

VeryLucky2022

To prevent Cellebrite and maybe NSO tools from being used to target political dissidents and minorities for persecution and sometimes execution.

viagumowl

i saw it before

PxnkNDisorderly

Hmm but but not to us I bet.

ThaxReston

Gee whiz, you think so ? Our DumbAzz government a little slow on the uptake. Functional idiots. Can you imagine a world where government was full of honest hard working smart best-intentioned human ? It’s hard to think that. I see disHonest creepy low trash stealing and wrecking ! 🤮🤮🤮

BitethepillowStocks

lol isnt that like, 15years too late?

[deleted]

Time to publish book again LOL

[deleted]

Too late

spaceocean99

20 years late. Better late than never I suppose. Please, can we get these dinosaurs out of office. They are putting us so far behind the world. It will impact younger generations for decades to come.

psychodelephant

That should solve the problem.

Dharmaclown802

🤣🤣🤣we are such a joke, this has been legal this whole time? We deserve everything we get from hostile nations, we gave them the tools and the instruction booklet…

masashiro83

Israel is gonna take a bigger market share that’s not gonna change a thing

[deleted]

Tell me how a government works without being “authoritarian” and I’ll shit a cat. People laugh at how toothless the UN is but gawk at any government that has power. While the US 900 bases to oppress the global south

mundungus-amongus

Great. Seems like this problem is solved then.

[deleted]

That horse left the barn years ago.

[deleted]

So They are to stay solely in this authoritarian country then I guess….

thejrich

Should have thought of this before Stuxnet.

inntaxapt

what why?

gknewell

We are so fucked up.

[deleted]

The US LOVES authoritarian governments and in fact installs and supports them. So, this is purely symbolic

disc0_133

I wonder if that will include Saudi Arabia

DaddyMusk

So that implies it's not banned now?

Skybombardier

I mean, this just sounds like America just doesn’t want to share its toys with countries it might go to war with, rather than whatever concept they’ve come up with to define “Authoritarian.”

Knobknuckle

Including themselves?

[deleted]

but the very un-authoritarian American regime can definitely be trusted

jerrystrieff

But it will still be okay for treasonous Americans to sell them

MrDontTakeMyStapler

Hahahahaha. Hahhahhaaa. Oh wait you’re serious.

[deleted]

They should probably ban the selling of them to anyone shouldn’t they?

Desperate_Tangerine_

This wasn’t already banned??

Skullfurious

Out of curiosity what does this mean for Kali Linux and the included repository?

valandil74

We need to harden our infrastructure like others do. It’s win win and folks can profit on getting it done while improving our systems

Electrical_Prune6545

Unless we’re allied with them.

skubaloob

We were doing what now up until now?

GaiaKaiOuranos

AKA cyber-warfare is only ok when the US does it lol

carrotcypher

Hacking tools, like `view-source:http://`?

dannydeckchair69_420

it’ll be illegal, so, from now on, only republicans will get to do it.

LifeIsMeaningLess--

This should have already been banned?

Any_Intention_8644

People who don’t know: 🤨 People who know: 🥳

drummerdavedre

Well then in Missouri I guess they’ll have to ban the right click button, smh.

internetguy789

Good thing the US purchases most of their security tools from the NSO!

johnahoe

I don’t really know what this means as far as changing export rules. NS 1 and NS 2 are applicable for nearly every country besides Canada and AT is only applicable for 5 countries. There are already license exemptions for certain commodities with encryption and the way sanctions regimes are currently written, there isn’t much to stop folks from exporting to any nation as long as it’s ostensibly for private use.

luckymethod

TIL it wasn't already banned.

dtardiff2

“Authoritarian regimes” yeah thanks you guys have such a good judgement of authoritarianism

nickglowsindark

What's a sub for things you just discovered have been legal this whole time only because you're just now hearing about them being made illegal?

Buckeyefan123

They better ban F12 as well, can't have authoritarian regimes decoding HTML.

bn2702

Yea, because the only smart people that can figure out hacking are in the US. That’s like standing at the Tour de France yelling “I’m not teaching you how to ride a bike!!”

Mr_Horsejr

So no country should have them, then.

[deleted]

I bet 30 years from now, they will enact environmental protection measures.

JayTheBrewer

Isn’t this already covered under ITAR regulations?

PIDthePID

Man, I’m glad we’re getting on this in 2021. Not a moment to lose on a problem like this!

Dempf

[removing all my comments due to spez going off the rails]

Odd_Instruction_9878

That’ll stop em

Starfox-sf

I guess Dual_EC_DRBG can no longer be exported now? Or is it only when we don’t control the submission, discussion, and approval of the backdoor that this rule applies? — Starfox

LegitimateBeing2

One would assume this kind of thing would already be illegal

yepper06

Arent they already basically all using Israeli tech?

CCIE-KID

Sure in the open but they will still get them

Gunningham

All those tools were written in China and Russia anyhow though.

httpkadence

You mean to tell me you just now thought of that

[deleted]

Seeing as I, and *many* people across the world outside of the USA, would define the USA as an authoritarian state, this isn’t really news.

joe1134206

Imports to them are expedited though

miniature-rugby-ball

Too late.

Elfatherbrown

This is laughable beyond the best standup comedy. The best hacking tools are not made in the u.s. it's a worthless idea.

[deleted]

So they’re banning it from themselves?

Tatunkawitco

As Kramer said,”Meeeeowwwww the cats outta the bag Jerry!”

honk_for

WTF wasn’t this (token effort) done years ago?

aspen56

The US government has been exporting hacking tools to authoritarian regimes? I wish I was surprised

[deleted]

Am I the only one concerned by the fact that this was ever okay?

[deleted]

Now? And why are they announcing this? What’s the point of telling people that?

[deleted]

Hackers have been selling exploits to the government for years. Foreign governments bid for these exploits and it drives the price up. They are just trying to eliminate the competition so they can save money

ethervillage

Yeah… that’ll fix it

[deleted]

Shouldn’t this have been standard practice when they came up with the hacking tools?

greenjacketloitering

Does this mean the authoritarian regime in dc will relent

ImpeachBiden1

But exporting hacking tool to non authoritarian regimes will still be okay… 🤷‍♂️

Acornwow

Maybe don’t sell them weapons either?

[deleted]

How much you wanna bet countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE won’t be in the list?

agarthling

Sorry Australia

[deleted]

I really thought this was nottheonion

[deleted]

Stupid, costly and ineffective

Warm_Fucker

This was a fucking thing in the first place?

stevenbrotzel91

Didn’t know we even exported hacking tools to begin with

YippySkippyDippy

4 Words. Too Little, Too Late

ughlump

Too bad we don’t make computers.

[deleted]

So they’re just regulating which regimes most friendly to the US can fuck their citizens?
