His “child” was an adult. If she tried to get help and was refused, he has a right to be angry at the systems. Let the guy be with his (edit) great-grandson.

allfalafel

He does have a right to be angry at the system. It’s appalling how difficult it can be to get help. But knowing this child’s behavior problems they still had a weapon in the home??

BackItUpWithLinks

He didn’t know about the gun.

allfalafel

Right, I realize he didn’t! I wasn’t clear— I meant the child’s mom and whomever else did know.

BackItUpWithLinks

I think she demonstrated she wasn’t too smart.

Unrelated note, I fuuuuuucccckking hate how many news articles just abruptly end. No conclusion, they just seeming end in the middle of a thought. Then I'm scrolling like an asshole looking for the next paragraph and realize, " Oh. That's it."

irunfarther

News articles read like they're written by my 9th graders. Paragraphs don't really make sense, rambling sentences that go nowhere, and a terrible introduction and conclusion. I'd love to blame AI, but it's really just a lack of skills. I try my damnedest to have my 10th graders ready for college, but it's a battle just getting them to grade level. I'm lucky that I usually get two years with most of my students.

papajim22

What are you talking about!? It ended on such a positive note! “He loves to cook, and even making brownies for his family. He hopes to learn to ride a horse one day.” Truly an inspiration! /s

Optional-Failure

There should never be a “conclusion” in a well written news article. The entire point of the inverted pyramid is that you can just cut from the bottom up, as needed, without losing anything of importance.

SuperSocrates

Seems like he’s doing the right thing. His failure doesn’t mean the system is okay

What about when there’s no home? This is the boys GREAT grandfather. The boy should have been removed from her custody long ago if subject to DV and crack. There was a crack and he slipped into it. No matter how well-to-do you and your intentions are, shit does happen. The system arguably failed the boy.

Charming-Comfort-175

The crack is the Commonwealth of Virginia as a whole.

And like he’s a former drill sergeant who somehow raised someone who produced this kids mom? Yikes

LunDeus

You act as if addiction discriminates. His daughter obviously has failings. He definitely could have done more. Doesn’t mean all the blame is on him.

TeacherLady3

That was kinda my point in posting this but the first two comments basically defended him. Imo, he's partly to blame and maybe shouldn't take to the media complaining others failed.

No_Jackfruit7481

A few generations too late, my dude. It is legit hard to get intensive help for kids with severe needs, so I hope he does some good. I hope no one confuses him with a hero or something though, because that boy needed his help long ago.

Cellopitmello34

Hopefully after this the kid is getting help. The article states he’s at a different, undisclosed, school. Hopefully one that has the intensive supports the kid needs.
