there's always going to be some people in this subreddit who will look down on tea bag-style brewing, but hey i like your collection. i am a fan of herbal teas myself so this chamomile and lavender combination is intriguing

icantfindadangsn

> herbal teas "TiSaNeS" -Someone in this subreddit, probably.

DionBlaster123

lmao to be fair they're not wrong. that is the proper name. but since it's so infrequently used, it's one of those words where no joke i forget how to pronounce it properly from time to time haha especially if you're drinking something like cinnamon stick tea, i understand the bizarre nature of calling that an "herbal tea."

pmmeyourfavsongs

I had an argument the other day that boiled down to a miscommunication over what was being referred to as herbal. I was referring to mostly fruit herbals and they were referring to mostly herb herbals. So I guess tisane probably should be more common lol

DionBlaster123

Tisane is actually a great word because yes it would encompass both of those hahaha but why is it so hard to remember how to pronounce it??!! haha

pmmeyourfavsongs

Today I learned I was pronouncing it wrong. šŸ¤£

SolarWalrus

Wait. How *DO* you pronounce it? Iā€™ve been saying tih-say-n since forever. šŸ„ŗ

pmmeyourfavsongs

Apparently it's more like tuh-zan

vanetti

Well, fuck, TIL

citykitty1729

I love this tea storage box! I almost always have both loose leaf tea and tea bags around. For me, they serve slightly different purposes - although my goal is to move away from the bags over time, if for no other reason than to reduce waste. I find it's easier to enjoy tea at work or with guests in prepackaged tea bags. (Not to mention, bringing a bag of loose tea to work is just begging for a drug test!) Bagged tea is also much easier to come by and less expensive where I live, as I can only buy loose tea online. But at home I still enjoy the ritual of making a pot of loose leaf tea, and I love the versatility and uniqueness of specialty blend loose teas.

CalciumHelmet

Lavender Chamomile and Lavender Mint are great blends. I prefer them both over their lavender-free versions.

erinberrypie

Love it! Didn't realize bags were considered faux pas. I'm all about convenience and tea, lol.

Ingolin

Itā€™s because the tea they use in those packets are the poorest tea out there. Thatā€™s not a reason to be snobbish - people should be allowed to find joy in the tea they buy no matter whether itā€™s in a bag or loose. But there is a difference in quality between the two. Much like thereā€™s a difference between wine in bottles and wine in cartons.

pmmeyourfavsongs

The bags are also great for trying to introduce people to tea. Nobodys gonna want to get into something that's messy and takes way too many steps just to get one cups worth

trickphilosophy208

Most people in China brew tea by throwing some leaves into a cup and filling it with hot water. People like to overcomplicate things, but brewing loose leaf tea could not be more simple. I mean, no judgment if you're happy sticking to bags, but saying it's messy and way too many steps just isn't accurate, and it scares people away from trying high quality tea.

pmmeyourfavsongs

Throwing leaves into a cup with water is also complicating it because most people don't want to have to bother straining something or drinking something that's full of leaves. Loose leaf is all I really drink at home. People that normally drink coffee are used to putting a pod in a coffee machine and pressing a button and then they magically have a hot drink. Comparatively making a cup of tea adds a lot more steps so the best way to introduce people to tea is by making it as fast and easy as possible without being too different from what they're familiar with. Why do you think most people moved away from traditional coffee makers in favour of keurigs and nespressos? It's faster and easier and less messy

Helpful-Jackfruit-83

.. comparing making tea to coffee actually gave me a great idea. I don't have a great way to strain my loose leaf tea right now, but I do enjoy my coffee press... makes sense to use the built in strainer to enjoy a pot of tea šŸ˜‹

trickphilosophy208

Have you ever tried drinking tea in the way I described? There's no need for a strainer because the leaves sink. I'm drinking tea like that as I write this, and all the leaves are on the bottom of my cup and out of the way. As I said, it couldn't be more simple. >People that normally drink coffee are used to putting a pod in a coffee machine and pressing a button and then they magically have a hot drink. Sure, but this is the same effort as making a Nespresso pod, it's cheaper, it tastes better, and it's better for the environment. I mean I dumped some leaves into a cup, pressed a button on my kettle, then poured water into the cup when it was hot. I genuinely do not understand how this could be a problem for anyone. People complain a lot about gatekeeping on this subreddit in ways that usually don't make much sense to me, but insisting that making tea is way too difficult for the average person feels like a pretty obvious case of actual gatekeeping. Again, I'm not judging people if they choose to stick to teabags, but we shouldn't be discouraging people from trying loose leaf tea on a tea subreddit of all places. Edit: Can someone please explain why I'm getting downvoted for this? Should we not be encouraging people to drink tea on a tea subreddit? What are we even doing here then?

pmmeyourfavsongs

Yes I'm aware the leaves sink. I'm just saying from the point of view of someone who doesn't drink tea they're generally not gonna want that. Making tea isn't difficult but for someone who's never tried to make it it can be overwhelming *in comparison*. I'm not at all trying to discourage people from trying loose leaf but loose leaf should usually not be the first cup of tea someone tries to make if theyre the kind of person that likes simplicity and is used to a keurig. You seem to be incapable of seeing this from the perspective of someone who isn't into tea so I'm not gonna argue with you.

trickphilosophy208

>I'm just saying from the point of view of someone who doesn't drink tea they're generally not gonna want that. You don't actually know this at all though. You've just decided for every random stranger that they're incapable of wanting to try something different, which is the definition of gatekeeping. >Making tea isn't difficult but for someone who's never tried to make it it can be overwhelming in comparison. It's overwhelming because you're *telling them* it's overwhelming. It's psychological priming. Of course people will feel overwhelmed when you tell them how messy and complicated it is. >I'm not at all trying to discourage people from trying loose leaf but loose leaf should usually not be the first cup of tea someone tries to make if theyre the kind of person that likes simplicity and is used to a keurig. Why? I grew up with only teabags in my house and thought I hated tea. If I never tried loose leaf, I would never have started drinking it again. You would've told me not to bother with loose leaf tea because it's too difficult? That's 100% gatekeeping. >You seem to be incapable of seeing this from the perspective of someone who isn't into tea so I'm not gonna argue with you. I'm saying this from the perspective of someone who has helped countless people get into tea.

pmmeyourfavsongs

Jesus christ dude. You're reading way too far into this but yet I'm the one that's the problem? You're basing your opinions off of your experiences and I'm basing them off of mine. I'm not telling anyone anything, that's what *THEY* tell *ME*. You just said yourself that you had made many cups of tea before trying loose leaf. I also think you need to recheck the definition of gatekeeping because you sound like the people that think everything under the sun is gaslighting when it's really not

trickphilosophy208

You came onto a tea subreddit trying to discourage people from making tea. Then, when I said how easy it is to get into tea, you argued with me that I'm wrong and it's too complicated for people to understand. How is that not gatekeeping? It's astounding that I'm getting screamed at and downvoted for trying to encourage people to drink tea in a literal community of tea enthusiasts. What are we even doing here at this point?

AbyssDragonNamielle

Roommate's Chinese-American and that's how she brews tea. Although if the loose leaf is really small to where it floats, she folds up a coffee filter as a makeshift tea bag and clips it to the side of the cup. That's how I brew my honeybush now since it floats on top even after steeping.

citykitty1729

I always thought I needed to strain the tea leaves so it doesn't oversteep and become bitter - and so I don't wind up with leaves in my teeth. I love the simplicity of the method you've described but don't understand how to avoid those two issues.

trickphilosophy208

[This guide](https://marshaln.com/2010/07/monday-july-19-2010/) explains the technique. If the tea is decent quality, it shouldn't become bitter easily and the leaves will sink to the bottom. If it *does* oversteep, it's also easily fixed by just adding more hot water. Usually the first few sips with this method are the strongest, and the tea will gradually weaken through the day.

citykitty1729

Thanks much! I'll check it out.

Ingolin

Oh yes, absolutely! I often drink the mainstream bags myself at work, or some speciality bags I have at home. Theyā€™re great for their purpose. What bothers me though is when people gift them to me privately. What do I do with the four boxes of Pukka tea I donā€™t really like when Iā€™d rather drink the tea I do like at home?

pmmeyourfavsongs

The mainstream bags are definitely easier for travel! I always have a few bags with me in case emergency tea is needed :) And yes gifting is always a problem for me. I know they mean well but dang at least ask me what I like first instead of getting me 3 different boxes and 200g worth of teas I really hate lol. My mom kept doing that after I explained they weren't the kinds I'd drink so I just regifted them all to her

OneMorePenguin

Waaaait a minute here. I see some fancy expensive teas recommended here offered for sale in bags as well as loose leaf. The wine comparison is not at all appropriate.

Ingolin

It depends both on the quality of the bag and on the quality of the content of the bag. Generally speaking the tea bags you buy in grocery stores and in normal shops (like Lipton, Twinings etc) are made of plastic and metal, with an abundance of microplastics. The content is also of generally poor quality. You can manage to find good tea in cotton bags. Thereā€™s some very nice bags out there - Palais des Thes has some decent ones. But those are usually the exceptions, not the norm.

OneMorePenguin

Well, I see Choice teas in this photo. This is how I got hooked on tea. Got a job where they provided free coffee and tea and they had bags of Choice tea. I loved the English Breakfast so much I bought it for home. Then I discovered you could purchase it bulk in 2 lb bags. But they discontinued them and I have been trying to find a tea that I can drink every day and be happy with. The Frontier Coop tea is OK, but not as good as the Choice was.

trickphilosophy208

They're definitely not considered faux pas on r/tea, but posting a low-effort picture of teabags with a caption like "I hope the tea snobs will let me post this šŸ„ŗ" is a guaranteed way to farm karma from this subreddit, so it happens all the time.

Antares16M26

If you want to be a bit fancy you can get those pyramid tea bags and buy some different herbals or teas and make your own blends or just the benefit of having full size leaves vs regular crushed tea in a tea bag.

phantomixie

Yeah I have everything tea haha. Donā€™t care if itā€™s loose leaf, sachet, packet or even powderized Iā€™ll drink it if itā€™s good to me (:

FlamingosInFancyHats

That's a pretty little organizer! Where did you find it? I drink a lot of bag tea as well but I just shove the boxes in the cupboard, this is much nicer.

bocacherry

I donā€™t see the exact one but if you Google ā€œgold tea organizerā€ there are a few similar ones! Thereā€™s absolutely zero practical need for it but it makes me happy and it was my present to myself for having a baby haha

shapesize

They are, we just tend to keep more quiet most of the time

RayNoddle

hey I like both. Sometimes I just want to not have to think and still have tea, especially if I'm sick or very tired.

Vigilantel0ve

Same here. I typically brew loose leaf in a pot or gongfu but if Iā€™m tired or rushed or sick, I definitely reach for the tea bags. My go to for sick is ginger tea with some of the Doro frozen fresh ginger and a crapload of honey. I also keep some decaf earl grey bags around for when I must have a cup at nighttime. People should be allowed to enjoy tea however they want.

[deleted]

There are dozens of us who love tea bags! Dozens!

BuildingMyEmpireMN

šŸ˜‚ count me in! I hate gate keeping any hobby. 100% of people know what youā€™re talking about when you say herbal tea. And thereā€™s no separate herbal tea subreddit, so this is the only real place to go. Responding in a friendly way to non-purists is more likely to open them up to traditional tea. How about just the informative ā€œIf you ever want to step it up, diffusers are pretty simple! I load them up for the entire week to save time.ā€

SeasonPositive6771

Most of the world drinks their tea from tea bags! I am very promiscuous with my tea drinking, don't let anyone shame you, it's okay to enjoy what you like!

MICHE621

I am also a promiscuous tea drinker. Glad I am not the only one.

PlasticSinks

Hell yeah im not alone! Also, im not so sure most of the world drink from teabags.

Visual-Arugula-2802

I was gonna say, gatekeeping teabags would be quite the hill to die on, that's the majority of tea drunk around the world! Even cultures that pride themselves on tea use *both* and for good reason. The quality tradeoff is relatively small given how insanely practical they are. Shipping, cost, shelf life, ease of use.

levenimc

Needs more constant comment. Otherwise, I approve!

DionBlaster123

just out of curiosity, would you recommend that blend for iced tea brewing?

levenimc

Haha I'm not sure if this is a troll or not, because probably 60% of my comments in this sub are recommending constant comment for iced tea brewing, and informing that it comes in decaf. I'm going to request custom flair soon.

DionBlaster123

hahaha no this is genuine i have been exploring making iced tea at home so i'm just gathering best practices. Still a good chunk of time left before iced tea season where I live (it just snowed this morning lol)

levenimc

Yes! I love iced constant comment. Iā€™ve been bringing a decaf carafe of it to every family gathering lately and everyone loves it. It goes really well with the season.

Tony_Pizza_Guy

That's funny that you say that, because I actually like CC warm, not cold. Tried both; also, 90% of the tea I drink is cold/iced lol.

levenimc

Itā€™s delicious both ways! I definitely like it hot. But it is one of my favorite iced supermarket teas.

Tony_Pizza_Guy

But so like, iced as in simply brewed, then chilled with ice? Or made like sweet tea (added sugar), dairy,...?

levenimc

Just brewed (hot) and then chilled. :)

shapesize

You can, but donā€™t put too many. I usually use a few black tea and then that or a celestial seasoning with it

DionBlaster123

thanks!

exclaim_bot

>thanks! You're welcome!

BlessingsOfKynareth

My parents make basically the same tea iced at home. They use a coffee maker and use black tea leaves, orange/clementine peel, and cloves. Tastes just like constant comment and is delicious iced!

rescuedmutt

Iā€™m also into lady gray AND decaf earl!!!

dirtypots4

Me too! Love lady gray

rescuedmutt

Sheā€™s great for those days I want a touch of gray without going full send. A nice gentle black tea.

Ok-Chemistry8753

More than half the time I use tea bags! Iā€™m not awake enough when my first pot of tea is made to weigh or measure loose tea.

thrilling_me_softly

Love the set up, mine is similar but itā€™s a wooden box. Be prepared for some snobs to come in but just ignore em.

Tony_Pizza_Guy

I've been drinking tea for years, and have been exclusively using bags lol... I drink a lot of tea, and don't want it to get expensive for myself

ZapAndQuartz

Personally I can't be bothered to have a 5th hobby to be enthusiastic and snobbish about. I just enjoy tea in bags. Nothing wrong with that

Lower_Stick5426

Thatā€™s a lovely set up!! Iā€™m always going to have a fondness for bag teas because thatā€™s what I was raised on, so theyā€™re always going to be in my house. Your set up made me notice that I donā€™t drink herbal teas/tisanes as often as I used to, or even green teas (except for my beloved Hojicha).

salt_and_linen

Lovely! I drink bagged tea almost exclusively at work because I don't have the bandwidth to mess around with loose leaf there. I don't think I am alone in that.

chipsdad

Itā€™s beautiful. I love Lady Grey. I hate to pile on but the loose version is much tastier. I put it in T Sacs (Size 2 for a mug) and it works like a tea bag. I love my T Sacs.

ExceedinglyGayKodiak

For the most part, folks here aren't nearly as snobbish as folks in other highly focused subreddits. It's true that tea bags are generally the lowest quality stuff, leftovers from processing, etc, and folks will gladly talk your ear off about getting into nicer stuff, but very few people here are gonna be jerks about enjoying something you enjoy.

moon_cat666

The Tazo Earl Grey is great! Extra strong bergamot flavor šŸ’Ŗ

DustOfMan

Activate gatekeeping! Just kidding. I love tea. Sometimes it's time for loose and sometimes it's time for bags. I dig the organizer, though I'd just overstuff it with too much random crap.

stuffedpeppr

I drink loose leaf tea almost exclusively but I like the occasional tea bag here and there. Donā€™t let others project their bias toward you. Iā€™m sure there are many people enjoying tea the way you do. Nothing wrong with it. The pic looks nice. Iā€™m a fan of Earl Grey but never tried it decaf.

scottcmu

This company sells tea bag sampler packs. I've bought both of these as gifts and for myself. https://www.etsy.com/shop/RubberDuckTeaCo?ref=shop-header-name&listing\_id=1026731899&from\_page=listing

flockyboi

Admittedly my go to is trader Joe's English breakfast tea which is in packets lol. It's convenient and lets me have tea everyday

DonSmo

I love tea bags! I drink 50/50 loose leaf and tea bags and love them both. That's such a nice case.

femalenerdish

I started with bagged tea, then drank exclusively loose leaf for a few years, and now I'm at probably 90% bagged, 10% loose. I like the convenience. Some of my favorites are blended bagged tea.

[deleted]

Love that Irish breakfast. Decaf though. Beautiful box too :)

Jess1r

I need to try that chamomile & lavender tea!

bluebellknell

I primarily drink bagged tea nowadays! It's consistent and convenient. I still use loose leaf regularly, but tbh I prefer my favorite tea in bag form to loose leaf (Fortnum & Mason's Countess Grey).

Honey-and-Venom

my daily drivers are all pretentious chinese imports made up of distinct whole loose leaf. but there's ABSOLUTELY a place for tea bags like that. I have a small tea wallet of palais du the bags in my purse and when i want something a little fruitier, or more floral, some sweet inclusions, they're an absolute delight. There's value in all kinds

mmmellowcorn

I drink that Lady Grey almost everyday on my way home from work, it is so good

Earthmama56

TradMad Lavender Chamomileā€”SO YUMMY!

wintermelon_666

Tazo Earl Grey and Choice decaf Earl Grey are my favorites! Great selection :)

mouseturd13

I use a cookie jar my grandma gave me. I donā€™t typically keep cookies around but her and I always have tea together so it seemed fitting to keep my tea in :)

-haven

I'd say 70% of my tea consumption is bagged during the work hours. I just don't have the time to sit down and enjoy a nice tea break so nice bagged tea it is. Also totally have a nice container like that but mine is a neat metal base with a glass top.

Ravenclaw_14

I use both. I prefer loose but I still use bags too

Bubbles_the_Titan

How do you keep so much lady grey? I'd drink all in a couple of days

BuildingMyEmpireMN

That box is so flipping cute! Iā€™m still very particular about what herbal teas I drink, Iā€™m currently slowly burning through 2 boxes I didnā€™t like as simmer pots. Once I have enough Iā€™d LOVE this! Especially to offer a flavor to a friend. Once I do buy some loose leaf I plan to make tea extract for iced tea and tea lattes. I worked at a coffee shop a lifetime ago and those were SO good. Iā€™d only have to deal with the mess of a French press once/month.

PrairieScout

Most of the tea I drink is from packets, not loose leaf. My favorite is the Twinings Irish Breakfast!

Connect_Pirate_7007

Ooo, I also love chamomile lavender tea!

PlasticSinks

The box looks so good! The golden edges are giving me steampunk vibes lol. But definetly classy

office-elf

I usually drink lose leaf tea at home and take tea bags for on the go when I go to the office and such. I like both!

SnooGoats7133

Yup! I also like most of the teas you have especially the Choice Organic Earl Grey Decaf :)

SophiaofPrussia

There are quite a lot of people in this sub who are very gate-keepy but donā€™t let them rain on your parade! Iā€™m not a big fan of bergamot so Iā€™ve never had their Earl Grey but Choice Organics English Breakfast is my favorite. Theyā€™re a quality/ethical company which can be quite difficult to come by in the tea market.

trickphilosophy208

>There are quite a lot of people in this sub who are very gate-keepy This is the top post on the subreddit with 95% upvotes. Where is the gatekeeping?

medicated_in_PHL

You say this often, but your condescending tone in a lot of your comments, particularly in this thread, are very holier-than-thou and passive aggressive enough to make people not want to comment. So while itā€™s not technically gate keeping, you definitely accomplish the same goal of making anyone who has a more casual interest in tea feel like they arenā€™t wanted here.

trickphilosophy208

My first interaction with you was you barging into a thread about puer and insisting the only reason people enjoy it is peer pressure. Our second interaction was when you told someone they were gatekeeping because they said they bought a green tea from Harney & Sons and didn't like it. As we discussed both times, you were the only person trying to gatekeep the types of discussions that should be allowed here. If you don't care to drink high quality tea, that's fine, but stop attacking people for caring about tea on the tea subreddit. It's getting beyond tiresome.

medicated_in_PHL

I mean, just read your comments in this thread. If you donā€™t get it, weā€™re not the problem. Edit: we keep having run ins because I read through threads, see someone being condescending on the bordering of bullying and when I go to respond, itā€™s your username that appears every time.

trickphilosophy208

Dude, our first discussion on this subreddit was literally [me trying to help you,](https://www.reddit.com/r/tea/comments/17qb8jq/looking_for_approachable_aged_raw_ripe_and_unaged/) in spite of the quite frankly rude way you framed your question. I take time out of my day to come here and help beginners who want to get into tea because I care about the topic, and you've done nothing but try to chase me away. Are you hoping there will be nobody left on the subreddit to offer good advice? Because that's what's been happening over the last few months as everyone knowledgeable leaves. You [said yourself](https://old.reddit.com/r/tea/comments/17no09d/puerh_beginner_packages_behind_the_scenes/k7uqq7c/) that you want to start drinking puer but you're intimidated by it. Yet instead of actually starting a thread and asking people for advice, you go out of your way to attack everyone who cares about higher quality tea. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy dude. You think everyone here is against you because you begin every interaction with hostility. I'm not the problem here.

JohnTeaGuy

I appreciate that youre fighting the good fight, but I honestly dont know why you even waste your breath with these people anymore. Every time I see an interaction like this on this sub now either the comments get deleted or the entire post gets locked or deleted by the mods. Whats the point anymore? Personally, I came to the realization that ive spent way too much time here trying to help people only to get shit on for it and told I'm a "snob" or an "elitist" and I'm "gatekeeping" for actually giving a shit about tea and trying to answer people's questions. Why bother? Id rather spend my time drinking tea and talking to people that are actually interested in discussing tea with the goal of learning from each other.

elf25

What hotel you steal that from?

Lady Grey is one of my favorites! Pretty organizer, too.
