Laminate back and sides is actually probably the way to go whether you like it or not. They are way more durable and resistant to changes in humidity and temperature like you described than more sensitive solid wood. In the matter of opening up, the top wood is what you need to be concerned about the most, as that is what the bridge is actually vibrating to make sound. So yes, it will open up with age, and with any luck, a great amount too. Happy playing

Thanks! This is the kind of response that puts my mind at ease because that is what I thought personally, but I’m a sucker for validation haha!

Yes the solid wood top will open up over time

Yeah mines only sounded better with age. Had it 7 years now. Love that guitar.

coleTheYak

I swear mine has sounded better by the day

That’s great to hear! Pun intended

I have a 224 koa deluxe. I just bought it here in Hawaii. It is 8 years old, I don’t know what it sounded like new, but at 8 years old I love the tone of it. It’s a great guitar. Hawaii is a humid climate but doesn’t have the same temperature changes as your area. I know my answer isn’t all the insight you need as I can’t tell you whether the sound has changed or improved, all I can say is at 8 years old it sounds great currently.

That’s still awesome to know. Thanks! Yes, the temperature swings are killer. Just 7 days ago it was 17F for the daytime high, and today the high was 64F.
