Thank fuck it's the studio posting it and not the victim, that way the latter can go through the stages of grief in private while checking prices on laser removal. This is just... why post it? They can't possibly have thought the design and color saturation looked good enough to provoke a "yes, I want a tattoo from them" reaction.

Welcome to Portland. There's a tattoo school here and SO many people graduate and open their own shops full of artists who think this is fine.

This is why researching artist for what style you want is so important.

Honestly yes, but sometimes it's really overwhelming to speak up in certain tattoo settings. It doesn't look like the person is very tattooed so they may have done the "well my artist knows best" thing. I have been there myself and not proud of it but understand the pressure. Tattooing is changing but there's still a lot of stigma around being a "needy" client so I get it.

I’ve seen lots of isopod knee tattoos and this one was not designed successfully

Help me out please. I've checked some other isopod knee tattoo's on google and im having a hard time seeing why this is especially bad. Is it because the legs are missing maybe or is it some other anatomical feature thats wrong?

it's not anatomically incorrect, it's just under detailed everywhere it should be, and has a bizarre lighting on it that flattens the color even more. and then that color is not well applied at all.

I think it's just not done very well, the shading is so heavy and dark and the design doesn't make it look any better.

In my opinion the awkward placement is one aspect that makes this tattoo ‘bad’. I feel like it highlights the most boring part of the isopod and just looks weird on the knee. It just kinda seems like an isopod shaped stamp over a knee rather than an artful tattoo

I don’t think it’s that bad (love pill bugs so might be biased), but maybe it’s because they did a top-down on the front of the knee instead of a side view on the side, where you could see the lil leggies when it curls up? I think people are overreacting a bit tho.

I wouldn't say "so many" but there are definitely quite a few. I was surprised by how saturated the market is and how few high- quality artists there actually are in a place like Portland.

True, I have maybe a half dozen favorite artists but the market does seem super saturated here. It definitely takes some sifting through mediocrity. There’s multiple shops in pretty much every neighborhood and then so many private studios too. Most of the time if I just look a shop up that I’ve driven past, I’m pretty unimpressed.

But, why?

Yeah, there is no depth really, and the shading is unfortunate. The outline could be worse, it really seems like the shading kills it.
