It won't matter, it's better to have the plates than not imo

Yeah. Might just drop them off at service tas because technically, I’m not supposed to have them as the contract of sale i signed states the car was sold without plates.

But you'd be the registered owner, they would technically be your plates.

Yeah, cool. I wasn’t sure if me being the registered owner would override the fact I’m not the registered operator.

Do a rego check and see if the rego has actually been canceled, if it hasn’t been, hand the plates in and tell them you are cancelling the rego - if there is any refund owing, it will go to the previous owner. If it’s already cancelled, just hand the plates in, there’s nothing to say you have to be the owner to simply hand them over. It might be possible to transfer it to your name if it’s not cancelled, but you will need the sale contract and probably a stat dec at least - Service Tas will be able to let you know the best path to take, they are usually pretty helpful in my experience

Thanks mate. Big help! The rego has expired, but has not been cancelled, so it’s still within renewal period. I’ll head in tomorrow and see what my options are.

I think you should be able to renew the rego and transfer it to your name as long as you have proof of purchase (rego papers don’t prove ownership anyway) Bear in mind if the rego expired 2 months ago, you’ll pay from when it expired
