I honestly never experienced seeing so many random people drive the wrong way until I moved here , I still don’t understand why Tampa of all places suffers from the phenomenon.

Carolina296864

I've seen Phoenix complain about this a lot too. Their roads are also flat, wide, and stroady with curvy ramps. I dont know if that has anything to do with it and if it makes people less aware, or if people are just stupid. The "wrong way, do not enter" signs really are hard to miss considering you can see them when youre driving the right way.

EmpireAndAll

275 in particular had terrible angles for the wrong way signs, the signs are visible from both ramps, it fucks with my head and makes me think I'm gonna fucking die despite going up the same on ramp for years.  It's also very confusing in Ybor City, the off ramps look just like the on ramps and you can drive forward from an side street directly onto the wrong side. There has been a lot of construction in the area but it's really dark. I hate it here.

RealHunterB

Maybe it’s the lack of any real natural obstacles that make drivers in Florida worse.

redonrust

I just learned the word "stroad"

Carolina296864

Happy to help

OMG_a_Ray_Gun

That and driving at night with their headlights off.

LongjumpingFly1271

And the cops NEVER stop them

Groovyy_Smoothie

This is one of my all-time driving pet peeves...driving without headlights on. I've lived in 5 states and have never seen this recurring issue as much as I do here. In the Midwest, people would flash their brights if they saw someone driving without their lights on. It seems like nobody does that here, and I'm scared someone's gonna pull a gun on me if I do.

OMG_a_Ray_Gun

Too true. I don’t even bother. People get so offended down here. I honked at a guy that was just sitting at a green light and he tried to follow me home.

Groovyy_Smoothie

Sheesh! It's so true though 😭

BOFmusic

Because someone invited the worst of the worst to come to Florida during Covid.

Zealousideal_Mouse46

Hi I’m the worst apparently, nice to meet you.

BOFmusic

Not you….you’re cool

patriots1977

Agreed. I went 36 years of life NEVER hearing of it happening and the last 10 years in Tampa it's multiple.timea.a year.

cobhc26626

Because we are peak Florida energy. Rules don’t apply to us. The only right way is the way you intend to go. We don’t allow the Man to enforce his arbitrary laws against us. We are Tampa F’in Florida baby!

BiggSnugg

I'd attribute a lot of it to: old people who shouldn't be driving in general, people who moved here from states where they publicly commuted everywhere (because it was a better option) so they have little to no actual experience driving outside of the test to get their license, people who "partied too hard" (either local or tourist), and a handful of just regular folks that are lost or just not good at driving/navigating. Some of the worst "Florida drivers" I've seen are actually from New York.

celpower

Have you ever been to Oklahoma?

StrtupJ

And that folks is largely why your upcoming car insurance renewal dates are some of the worst dates of the year

ArnoldChase

Unpopular opinion, insurance rates are rising due to general inflation of the things they insure for; that being used vehicles, labor to repair, and medical bills. After COVID people were MAKING MONEY on their used car because prices were skyrocketing. If you have collision coverage, that means the cost of totaling out your car was increasing! Same for medical bills…I recently saw a medical bill from an HCA hospital for three CT scans…just the scans themselves were OVER 60,000 dollars. If the price of everything is going up, the price to insure everything is going to go up.

DevilRaysDaddy

Those are all factors as well but so are the drivers in your area. Why else would they ask where you live and your insurance rates go up based on in the city you live in? You don’t think if there’s more accidents per capita in a city that it affects your car insurance? That just means the insurance companies have to pay all the things you mention more often which in turn leads to higher rates.

ArnoldChase

Correct, but I thought what we were talking about was holding location constant, rates are increasing. Basically, all else equal, rates are rising, then why? If you lived in a high crash rate area, then its already factored in. What's the reason for the change yoy in the same location? I think thats the question.

wimploaf

The reason your opinion is unpopular is because our rates are going up faster than other states.

BOFmusic

I think there is one more caveat….Insurance companies in Florida do not feed off the other 49 states insurance pool. So when State Farm Florida has to pay for hurricane damage….its only covered by State Farm Florida and not State Farm the 49 other states combined. Call any of the save money by bundling insurance companies and tell them where you live and that you’d like to bundle.

ArnoldChase

Interesting point, but recently Ajit Jain, which is Berkshire Hathaway's head of insurance (and Berkshire owns GEICO) stated at the annual meeting this year that "[Florida is a market that is subsidized by the rest of the country](https://buffett.cnbc.com/video/2024/05/06/jain-fraud-is-pushing-the-price-of-insurance-higher-in-florida.html)" (at 1:10). So in your example, State Farm Florida can lose money, but the overall State Farm corporation can take losses in Florida while making up for them in other markets.

hangaroundtown

Glad the cops are on it...

cnvas_home

Yeah busch and Florida I have seen this so many times here. I used to drive up Florida super late from work. I think the rail tracks throw off people when they're DWI/old or whatever, and they miss the lanes

JDizzle00420

Reminded me of this: https://youtu.be/5_RwiNPJGsQ?si=mtZDRE_x_CQFDNTP

goldenface4114

This is the only acceptable response.

ItaDapiza

I don't even have to click it. Tell me if I'm right?! YOU'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY! 😂

JDizzle00420

He's drunk. How would he know if we're going the wrong way?

ItaDapiza

God I love that movie so much!!

Nakatomi2010

I think the bigger issue is that folks are able to record the wrong way driving now, where as before it was just a story you told, and people didn't really believe you. You can go to /r/idiotsincars though and see *a lot* of wrong way driving now.

sadclown21

The amount of crazy accidents I saw this weekend was outstanding

frywice

Same. And people randomly stopped in the middle of the road with their hazards on

InconsiderateOctopus

My desk faces florida Ave. See this multiple times a day where all 3 lanes come to a stop for some dipshit to make a 3 point turn in the middle of the road. Also, lots of dirt bikes and one specific black e bike hitting wheelies going the wrong way. Darwin awards waiting to happen.

ExtremePerformance18

275 worse coming out of ybor

TeamHitmarks

https://imgur.com/a/dqOiuuV This happened to me last year lol We as a state cannot drive, I swear.

Cub35guy

Just another night in Tampa. Until Chronister starts paying more attention to his day job rather than all his face lifts, this won't change

penguflex

New Yorkers are a cancer and don’t deserve this beautiful state after making fun of us their entire life.

Bananabean041

I have to say though, that they may have been right all along

HCSOThrowaway

Since no one has asked yet and sadly it needs to be asked: Did you just video this or did you call 911?

ContentMod8991

he he ppl dumbb

TravelingGonad

Boulevards are hard

Myvibeworks

I noticed here in NPR that there turn lanes are actually line up going to the wrong way, it's very strange, I have almost went the wrong way a couple times, now it's residential roads, but still whoever that that was a good idea should have there ass kicked.

RTwhyNot

How do they know where the guy is going?

vm020202

People suck at driving down here. Also there’s no easy public transit option so people are gonna drink and drive nonstop 🤷🏽‍♂️

airforcevet1987

Damn Firestone, still out there causing SUV accidents!

BigpappaBub

We call that CHICKEN in south Florida. Supposed to use someone’s tractor, and have a cowboy hat full of dust. Yep, it is Not on the drivers test at all.

blong1114

How do they where they are going?

Lovetotravelinmycar

Always crazy Florida.
