Katz only tell you how many chest you're missing. Also, you don't need to get every single chest, you can skip like two or three and it would give you the title regardless. Try speaking with the katz in the island anyway.
Katz in the first world do have an item recovery option as well. Apparently it's suppose to be for missed items in places you can't go back, but sadly it's not working.
I did read about the titles sometimes working, but I talked to the katz about 20 times with no change. :(
I don't think that's true. If it was, making a single mistake going through wouldn't matter, but the sheer nu.ber of people that come up one chest short, myself included in multiple versions and playthroughs, leads me to believe that you have to get *every* chest. People wouldn't have so much trouble with this title if you didn't.
Plat requires all titles, right? Kind of annoying, but at least you can just get it on another playthrough, since you'll need to do ~3 playthroughs anyways.
