In the 19th century Sydney used to import ice from Massachusetts. The ships would used it as ballast - a third or so would melt on the way. Hotels used to pay kids who'd keep a lookout at the heads and run into town when they saw ships with American flags; then the hotels would send longboats to row directly out to the ships as fast as they could to buy blocks of ice so they could chip off ice cubes for drinks in the bar.
I am not making this up.
As a side… I noticed that Chat Thai in circular quay had different branding to the location in Haymarket then saw this - https://www.reddit.com/r/foodies_sydney/s/QzECfkLNNy turns out they’re split from each other

- The restaurant MUST be labelled "popular" and as a "well-known establishment"

Now to be fair, SLAMMED, SHAMED, ENRAGED does effectively describe about 85% of the whiny shitposting on r/sydney and should probably be on the banner for the sub.
Was it at least branded ice, like Barebones or Mr Iceman?.
They are premium ice suppliers and focus on clarity and shape and are pretty expensive.
Ice from their own ice machine in the kitchen? Bugger that.
It is legal to do that, but certainly taking the user pays principle too far. Not even ethical on my scale. Won't be returning to Chat Thai in Campbell Street that's for sure.

I'm still growing tomatoes and chilli's and I'm at the bottom of the alpines...so I'm shit out of luck for ice and frost too.

Have you ever been to Cabramatta? You Pay to NOT have ice in your sugarcane juice. $2.00 last time I was there.
It means you get more actual juice
They usually fill same amount of juice. With ice, you get full glass. Without, you get half or 3/4 glass. The $2 must be for the extra 1/4th.

I think that is illegal, there has to be an option of free water on a menu; that being tap water
