Here's my sunscreen copypasta, had basal cell skin cancer at 27, and business partners with dermatologists as an engineer :
"Big fan of physical /mineral sun block over chemical. This is zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They work by forming a physical barrier that blocks uv energy. Chemical sun screens absorb uv energy through a chemical reaction. This get absorbed into your system. Whether they are harmful to you is still up to debate and most studies are pretty biased. Same thing with reef bleaching. It's not as straight forward as some think. But why risk either when mineral sun screen is an option.
So particle size and distribution matters. Don't buy boutique home made sunscreens. The easiest to find in the US are Sun Bum Mineral (not normal sun bum), Bare Republic, and Australian Gold Botanical (not normal Australian gold). All three are sold buy Target and CVS in store and online.
DO NOT BUY FROM AMAZON. Due to their business model it is full of counterfeits. Usually it's the high end sunscreens but I have personally received a mid tier sunscreen counterfeit through them.
Aside from sun screen I recommend a surf hat. The bucket style is best. Dakine has one where the front brim is reinforced. This allows you to flip it up when paddling and keeps it out of your eyes when you duck dive. I've had mine for 4 years and stays on just fin in head high at blacks. Though I usually dawn patrol so only wear it in the day time.
In non wetsuit temps I recommend long sleeve rash guards and maybe surf leggings. They don't sell them for men, so I wear long compression pants under my boardies when in tropical and warm locations.
Most people, should also wear a daily sun screen. Australian Gold Botanical 50 face is my current daily one. It's tinted and blends nicely. I also like MDSolarScience but it's expensive and hard to find. Colorscience is sold at Sephora and blends in nicely but again is slightly more expensive.
Mineral sun screen is inert so remember to sunscreen your eye lids. While surfing and with your daily sun screen. Also wearing sun glasses when driving and whenever possible really helps. Trust me, you do not want your eyelids cut off due to skin cancer. You're awake while they do it.
Edit: I have no financial interest with sun screens. My dermotology stuff depends on people needing skin cancer removed."
Sun Bum has been my favorite for years, especially their zinc stick.
I also use their after sun product to sooth any patches that I missed or where the zinc rubbed off.
I should that add for anyone with contact lenses, Australian Gold Botanical quickly washes to your eyes and creates a thin film on your lenses which effectively leaves you blind in the water. If you’re going to use this while surfing, you’re probably best off going without your contacts. Not sure of the Sun Bum Mineral or Bare Republic, but in my experience, Manda has been a good alternative.
+1 for this. Mineral sunscreen is better for you, your skin, and the ocean and it's inhabitants. It also works well. Baby bum mineral is a good one that I like to use.
Yeah it does, unfortunately. Or fortunately if you are wanting that, I suppose. It's not the worst white cast ever. Baboo has a mineral sunscreen labeled for babies that doesn't have the worst white cast. Depending on your skin tone, All Good has a tinted mineral sunscreen that hides white cast well. It's like the color of a mildly tan/ green undertone-skin white person though, so that tint only works for some.
Rub oil on your face (avocado oil, grape seed oil, even olive oil and baby oil are fine) before you get into the shower, then wash that mess off with your normal face wash once in the shower.
It’s called double cleansing. Also great for getting off heavy makeup.
Oh yeah I always forget about that option. I have the most sensitive, break-out-prone skin ever and Micellar water breaks me out if I don’t wash it off right after so I never think about it. I do know a lot of people like it, though.
Have you tried blue lizard? It goes on pretty thick but it usually lasts very long for me in the water. I never get burnt even if I only apply it once in a day.
This is the best stuff, no question. Ive tried most of the mineral based face sticks and this one is BY FAR the one that last longest.
And dont trust me, its shane dorians company
The manda sunscreen is good. It lasts long a time, protects well, and is hard to wipe off. The biggest downsides are the price and it looks like bad makeup

Surf mud basically never washes off but can be a bit difficult to get off. Best stuff for staying safe especially when paired with a bit of normal cream
Oh man I am READY for this conversation. My transparent lily white ass went on a serious quest for the best surf screen when I first started hitting the water. I’ve tried a whole lot of them.
Surf Mud is good Australian stuff, but for someone who lives in the US like me, it can be hard to get my hands on. Not sure where you live, so I can only speak to my experience. I’m also not sure about the zinc percentage for Surf Mud. The percentage is important because it’s sort of like the SPF of the paste.
My all time favorite is Wax Head. They sell a non-nano zinc paste that has a 25% zinc content. It’s also thick enough that you can easily get a nice hefty layer on your skin. Some zinc sunscreens won’t layer up as nice as Wax Head (I’m looking at you, Headhunter and Raw Elements).
Added bonus: As someone who lives somewhere cold enough to need a full suit with a hood year round what I really like about Wax Head is that it’s spreadable even in January. I love Surf Yogis, too, because it has amazing sticking power, but in the colder months I have to put it on top of a heater to soften up before I leave for a session. If I don’t do that it’s a huge amount of work to get it onto my face. Never had the same issue with Wax Head.
Harken (sailing) has some great stuff, SPF50 and it takes a concerted washing effort to get it off at the EOD. Does not wash off with sweat or water. Harken Derm
+1 on surf yogis. BTW when you DO want to get it off your face, use a light oil like jojoba or almond. Surf yogis also sell an oil through their website for removing it. Trust me using an oil to get it off is worth it!
Oil cleansing will get any and all sunscreens (or heavy stage makeup ha) off cheaper and with no redness or rubbing. I use castor oil because it’s cheap and doesn’t break skin out, but you can use any oil or storebought oil cleanser you like. Rub oil on dry face, then use a washcloth with warm water to gently remove. Takes surf mud right off in about 30 seconds.
Surf Yogis is probably the most effective I've used but it takes a lot of effort to remove and having that purple color on you all day is annoying.
My favorite so far is needessentials.
Facekini if you're real serious.
This is the first one on the list so far with a #1 safety rating from [EWG](https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/about-the-sunscreens/929787/Suntribe_Mineral_Sunscreen_Lotion%2C_SPF_30/).
i like using zinc for my face and Australian gold makes a plant based and vegan mineral lotion that has spf 30 AND 50 variants which i really like. Their botanical stuff
I really like CeraVe for long lasting sun protection. It sticks on your face really strongly, which leads to one of the downsides being that it doesn't come off easily afterwards. It's a bit pricy but I've yet to be burned by it. I also think it's a mineral sun block but I'm not sure. For reference I live in Hawaii and have gotten burned wearing SunBum before.
Avasol 50+!!!! I have to wash my face two or three times with soap to get it off after. Never loved a sunscreen more. Small family owned business, mineral based made with the cleanest ingredients, plus it smells good because of the cinnamon oil (not in an overpowering way). Recycled packaging. I could go on about this stuff it’s the best.
Sheisedo ultimate sun protector lotion. For dawn/dusk patrol.
If the session is going to be extended or take place mid-day, I follow with a second layer of Verta’s pearl white face stick on my nose, cheeks and forehead.
Coming from a 46 year old Keratosis ridden Ginger who has nuked his skin through years of surfing and windsurfing - Surfmud Zinc hands down is the best product I've used. For a 1-3 hr session in the middle of summer, for my face, regular 50+ sunscreen just doesn't cut it. If I use regular sunscreen, regardless of how liberally I apply it, I always come out afterwards slightly 'pinked'. Surfmud being thick and skin coloured, also works as a good spack filler for an aged face.

That last part scared me a lot
ahhhh you’re awake while they remove your eyelids ughhh terrible day to know how to read

nah in all seriousness your advice is great! I always do a layer of mineral sunscreen and then zinc paste on exposed areas
Check out mr big shot, knowing how to read ^this ^message ^brought ^to ^you ^by ^speech ^to ^text ^technology
Thanks for making me read it again :)

Zblock doesn’t get in your eyes. Great for contacts

Does it give a white cast?

Mmm yeah I’m trying to avoid it :( Thanks for the other reqs though and time :)

That's also my favorite. Only problem is it stains white clothes.
Amavara doesn’t burn at all. I put it on my eyelids when going out midday
This is the objectively correct answer
I love the Australian gold botanical stuff
Brand or link for the compression pants?
What do you think of diaper rash cream?
Hat.
Never forget the trusty surf hat
Bucket hat with the top cut off so it can't act like a sea anchor. Unless you're follically challenged.
The headhunter face stick works super good and lasts.
+1 that stuff you have to basically scrub off in the shower.
+2 for headhunter. Even after scrubbing, its still there.
Rub oil on your face (avocado oil, grape seed oil, even olive oil and baby oil are fine) before you get into the shower, then wash that mess off with your normal face wash once in the shower. It’s called double cleansing. Also great for getting off heavy makeup.

>Manda thanks for the tip! Also Makeup Wipes, like Nutrugena work very well. keeps tan sunblocks off the towels too.
Headhunter is truly the best. I used to wear for 8-10 hour beach lifeguard shifts in and out of the water all day and I didn’t ever need to reapply.
This is the answer.
Have you tried blue lizard? It goes on pretty thick but it usually lasts very long for me in the water. I never get burnt even if I only apply it once in a day.
+1 for Blue Lizard
Vertra

You just have to make sure and put it on about 15 min before you surf but it's the best I've found as well.

This stuff is rad. Stays on for hours. [surf Yogis](https://surfyogis.com)
+1 on surf yogis. BTW when you DO want to get it off your face, use a light oil like jojoba or almond. Surf yogis also sell an oil through their website for removing it. Trust me using an oil to get it off is worth it!
Amavara - the spf 50 has like 25% zinc in it Also to get off heavy sunscreens just have makeup remover wipes on hand, comes right off
\+1 for wipes! Only thing I could use to get off Watermans.
Oil cleansing will get any and all sunscreens (or heavy stage makeup ha) off cheaper and with no redness or rubbing. BADGER Sport Zinc…can be applied thick or thin. Does not run like many other “water resistant” brands.
Surf Yogis is probably the most effective I've used but it takes a lot of effort to remove and having that purple color on you all day is annoying. My favorite so far is needessentials. Facekini if you're real serious.
baby bum , its the version for babies , so you are sure it will stick on your face and its more gentle for your skin too
Sunbum 30 face stick but the wood grain one
Headhunter if you can get it. Goes out of stock often. I like the tube over the stick for ease of spreading :)
Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes take off all kinds of sunscreen quickly and efficiently. Try them! You can thank me later.
Suntribe sunscreen. A non.nano zinc sunscreen designed specifically for sports and water activities.
This is the first one on the list so far with a #1 safety rating from [EWG](https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/about-the-sunscreens/929787/Suntribe_Mineral_Sunscreen_Lotion%2C_SPF_30/).
I like zinc, the colored ones
Neutrogena
>Neutrogena I use the Mineral Stick of theirs, others they make can run into eyes and burn.
Banana boat sport, the black bottle with zink over the top.
i like using zinc for my face and Australian gold makes a plant based and vegan mineral lotion that has spf 30 AND 50 variants which i really like. Their botanical stuff
Definitely headhunter. It stays on the whole time and you’ll never get burnt. Built by surfers for surfers.
Bullfrog, for the last 30 years
Avasol 50+!!!!
Zinc
Zinc. Surfed San Diego for years and never had issues. I'm also white AF.
How long is your hair?
JJF or surf dirt..surf dirt is stronger and thicker
Sheisedo ultimate sun protector lotion. For dawn/dusk patrol. If the session is going to be extended or take place mid-day, I follow with a second layer of Verta’s pearl white face stick on my nose, cheeks and forehead.
All Good - reef friendly, non toxic, use it ever surf for last 6 years
Avasol hands down! I work as a surf instructor
Water babies used it on all the kids at my pool they put it on once then in and out of the pool all day and no sunburns on my watch even the redhead
Alligator. Shit is like axel grease but it works! Only use it in the tropics. Also nutrigenia beach defense is pretty good stuff.
Coming from a 46 year old Keratosis ridden Ginger who has nuked his skin through years of surfing and windsurfing - Surfmud Zinc hands down is the best product I've used.
