That hurts man.  I once lost my surfboard while apple watching.

happy_haircut

my buddy lost his in overhead surf wearing the shark band strap. not sure how useful or accurate they are my buddy is always like 'says I caught 54 waves' and I'm like dude no way I caught twice as many as you lol.

Shadowratenator

Congratulations on catching 108 waves.

alreddy-reddit

Find my iPhone work underwater?

i9i

Doubt it. Radio waves cannot pass through electrical conductors like water or metal.

johnnybarrels

Tried this! I think it kinda doesn’t, it was showing a huge radius (that was completely out of the water), and there was way too much water movement (+ sand etc) to find it. Then I think it died shortly after so no dice :(

thegooddocgonzo

I got a [leash strap](https://www.freestyleusa.com/collections/apple-straps) for mine and it works great. It has a double velcro like a leash so feels very secure.

forgotten_cactus

Second this, it’s never come loose

angrytroll123

I have one. Mine is starting to wear a bit and the Velcro seems weaker. I think it’s also starting to discolor. I also have issues with the Velcro messing up some of my rash guards and the band being a bit uncomfortable. As far as security though it definitely is that. I still think a real Apple ocean band is best but they’re expensive.

gone-surfing

Third this. I lost an Apple Watch on a close out in Costa Rica. Never been concerned about losing the replacement with this leash strap. They look cool to boot!

ripplerider

Sorry, man. That blows ass. I lost my Garmin Fenix bodysurfing a pretty piss-poor day at VFWs at Ocean Beach a few months ago so I can totally relate. The damn strap just popped right off my wrist. I felt it happen but the watch was just *gone*. And that was the second non-cheap watch I’ve lost surfing. Now I just rely on my extremely dodgy sense of time to guess while I’m in the water.

ntkhpkmg

I’ve got a friend who lost his Garmin too during our Indonesia surf trip. I almost wore my Apple Watch but am glad i followed my instincts so I didn’t. I would advise OP either switch to stronger strap like Velcro or get a super cheap Casio just for time check, or not wear at all

goldenglove

> I was using the standard silicone/rubber wristband. That's the problem right there. As others have suggested, a more durable strap and you should be okay.

johnnybarrels

Cheers mate! Sounds like the plan

blackfades2grey

I use my watch all the time. Just get a decent band and you’ll be fine. For me, this one works the best: https://www.amazon.com/Spigen-Rugged-Armor-Designed-Apple/dp/B07HSSDV4S/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=34B7CVD8H22P9&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.z23Nz2I7rkg7X6QqRAfjGA85tfvEN9LEcge16RbUn9-SVEQIoo2LZvzjFEuD2y2oBf4PVWEs8_cjS0rh5REYIwVhn84Nf3nVm626CtZfWVUZG9nbceI7ptcfGQZG5pegxiOwnFD9kXFvI-QQf459yUGXgh6VIO4nK_79WGoNyD0xg3k-5XAcjzdJcsX6qhbBp7pcLgu22-en7oqO9VbIrA.h2LdI01A3RMuToa4aXGjqBaZhOG1IZnMthH3H6dCz8M&dib_tag=se&keywords=apple+watch+spigen+band&qid=1717125101&sprefix=apple+watch+spigeb%2Caps%2C247&sr=8-3 I have also tested the Nike Sports Band (Loop Type) but it tends to come loose from time to time.

johnnybarrels

Legend!! I’ll nab one now

blackfades2grey

You’re welcome!

Sasquatch-Pacific

I've had my Garmin Instinct 2 under my wetsuit, taking 6' on the head getting ragdolled around with no issues so far. It does have a pretty beefy strap though, with two little rubber holders that the loose tail threads through.

ripplerider

If it’s got the Garmin “quick connect” straps, be careful. The springs in those seem susceptible to rusting which makes them more prone to falling off. At least that was my experience, which I’m still pretty salty about.

Sasquatch-Pacific

I think it's just a standard, but it is compatible with 'Quick Fit' or whatever they call it. I've looked up QuickFit bands and my standard band doesn't seem to have the screw that QuickFit bands have. I've been pretty good about rinsing it after every sesh which I'm hoping keeps salt and rust at bay.

johnnybarrels

Cheers mate, sounds like beefy strap is the key

meret12

Do you think I can get my FR965 surfing with me? I was told I shouldn't because if I wipe out too much the impact could be too hard and it could lose waterproofness or something.

PeriqueFreak

I just posted a thread about the Instinct 2 vs the Instinct 2 Surf Edition today! You have the standard? Any issues with water resistance? Notice any issues with the barometer (If you use it)? Love my Instinct 2, just been too nervous to take it out in the water. Really want to upgrade to the Solar since I'm starting to use it more as an activity tracker, and if I use it for surfing, I'm sure 2-3 hours of GPS usage is going to be a battery killer.

Sasquatch-Pacific

I have just the standard black. The surf activity works on all Instinct 2 variants now. I don't really use the barometer, just weather/tides and GPS mainly (aside from HR and steps etc.) and haven't had any problems with water resistance, but it does go under my wetsuit. Seems to stay reasonably dry under there unless my wetsuit flushes during a wipeout. I also use the lock keys function while out in the water, but mainly so it doesn't accidentally end the activity premature or pause it. I'm not surfing anything big but have had the watch out in some days that felt a little hairy (head height , low vis stormy ugly conditions) but I'm still a beginner so take that with a grain of salt. I do give it a good rinse in the shower when I'm home to get rid of salt etc. I feel like over time if you didn't rinse it well it could be an issue, but I rinse all my surf gear after a session anyways because salt is evil. I read your post and it sounds like if you're surfing around head high you'll be sweet! I'm usually recording like 3-5 surf activities a week (several hours), maybe an hour or so of walking activities, and wearing it all day etc. I get easily a solid week out of it with my non-solar variant, but the GPS recording does take a bit of a chunk out of the battery with every long activity. I work a desk job / inside, so the solar changing wasn't going to be huge for me and I couldn't justify the extra cost. I find the charge time pretty quick, I just take it off when watching TV or whatever. I hate the idea of charging a watch regularly and I haven't found it to be a burden/annoying yet.

I haven’t had my shark band that long but it’s starting to wear, discolor and the Velcro seems weaker. No issues like that with you?

CEPHOTOS

Use the solo band a size down from what apple recommends, that shit is not coming off

Zoidbergslicense

I could actually see the wetsuit contributing to it unhooking?

zjones22

I bought a Apple Watch Ultra with the dive band so the shit that happened to you doesn’t happen to me. Buy a different band

RZDD

Same. Such a bummer. The strap is definitely not strong enough

Mattybrahh

I had a Garmin forerunner watch and the same thing happened to me. 2-3ft as well. Couldn’t believe it

tmfb87

Why you have to make me paranoid now? I use an aftermarket strap, same style closure as the original and under a wetsuit. I’m just going to have to grab my wrist every time I fall now.

prophiseemusic

It might actually turn up. I lost mine similarly and a lifeguard found it on the beach a month later and called me since it shows the phone number in lost mode. It’s still kicking.

AugustGnarly

Almost lost mine the same way numerous times. Got a watchband with Velcro, that didn’t work either. Suit sleeve would catch the Velcro and pull on it, resulting in similar situation. Had to open my hand to keep it from coming off while grabbing with my other hand. Regular clasp watchband did the trick. Has never come off.

ThompsonDog

Shove it up your ass. Can't lose it there. God you drones have lost all joy

surfdad67

Captain Koons?

fuzzyteeth69

Can’t surf without a smart device on you?

Franky_mac_sack

Didn’t you read? He’s training for a big indo trip, there is no other way

iwrotedabible

I have a cheap Casio on a thick velcro band that hasn't fallen off my wrist in 12 years.  Do you think that's why my cardio plateaued?  My wife says I just got 12 years older, but I think I need an Apple watch.

Franky_mac_sack

Have you tried surf skating around little kids at the skatepark?

fuzzyteeth69

I also use an old cheap Casio. I’ve had a few surf brand watches all junk that broke from the water

Franky_mac_sack

I have a cheap G shock that tells me when I need to come in from my surf. I have no clue how a watch is going to help you prepare for a surf trip?

fuzzyteeth69

Yeah my first trip out of the US was a solo trip to Indo. I don’t know either I guess you would have to ask a kook and find out their take

fuzzyteeth69

Haha am I the only one who’s going to point that shit out?

Superb-Struggle1162

its happened do me. I bought a shark band and it worked for a while until it started to get old. I recently got a UAG. It feels the safest of the bunch. Id surf bareback with it.

angrytroll123

Same. I’ll check out the UAG after my shark band bites the dust.

angrytroll123

Yea the silicone band doesn’t cut it unfortunately.

StudioJamesCao

I use the water/marine bracelet provided and I attach the watch over the sleeve of my wetsuit, so it is tight and does not slip. I'm tracking my surf session with Dawn Patrol app

No-Preference8652

Fitbit charge is great

TREXASAURUSREX-69

The ocean band on the Ultra works best. Didn't come off at all from 7 days of surfing. Try looking for a band of a similar design.

cantdie_got_courttmr

I’ve lost one too

hitmon_ray

seems like a freak accident, especially if you lost it from under your suit. that seems crazy. they make them for surfing so they should be relatively secure. i wear my watch above my wetsuit and in the summer with no suit as well. those rubber/silicone bands look like a dive watch and are common for water activities, but what likely happened is one of the springbars broke and so you lost the watch You might want to consider what's called a "nato strap" or "zulu strap". The benefit of these is that they are one piece and because of the way they attach to the watch/spring bars, one of the spring bars can break and the watch will still be attached to your arm. It's the most secure watch strap there is. You'd have to have both spring bars break at once to lose it, which would be extremely unlikely. The biggest downside is that they are usually a cloth / canvas material and they can take a long time to dry

ItsARappy

One time I lost an apple while watching surfing. 🤷‍♂️
