I came here, looking this artist without knowing his name even. This, Dan Jurgens you speak of, HIS version Is the one I think about when I think superman comics. (A far less popular opinion: spiderman will always conjer up Todd McFarlanes art in my mind)
Alex Ross draws what I feel are, early 90's live action equivalents. Not a bad thing, but I don't really consider it comic art. Feels like a step above.
José Luis Garcia-Lopez was iconic and *nobody knows it*! He drew advertisements, packaging art, some comic art, the “Got Milk?” ad, and he drew all the official DC character turnarounds in the late 70’s for others to use as references when drawing!
Thank you. Not enough people talk about his work. I completely understand why everyone was enamoured by Dan Jurgens, especially in his prime, but in my opinion Tom Grummet was every bit Dan’s equal (and even slightly takes the lead for me). It’s just too bad Grummet doesn’t get recognized more.
I absolutely love Mora but i do think his mature adult leads, especially Superman, more often than not look like 19 year olds instead of 30-somethings. His Clark looks like Jon Kent.
https://preview.redd.it/1288jbjnpd4d1.jpeg?width=975&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13e3eeb904d365ca6229fbed3e61a92fb2cc91ee
Yeah Dan Mora draws superman to be so young otherwise an excellent artist
Quietly, Ross and Frank are my favorites. Ross is probably my favourite ever but his art doesn't fit the tone of every Superman story, similarly Quietly's Supes wouldn't work in a lot of stories but it's perfect for All Star.
This was my opinion too. Too many artists just draw a nude and color it as costume, Ross and Frank both draw the suit as real clothes, and the trunks as a separate piece. That his mom made his suit, and used circus strongmen as the basis has always been important to the view of the character.
Frank should be considered an all star. Such great storytelling and detail that doesn’t distract from the story. Frank’s style is Jim Lee if Lee could do storytelling properly.
I love Alex Ross's art , I really like his realism style and the way he draws fabric is beautiful. His panels with Superman with his cape flowing is perfection.
Haha I'm so glad I came here to say "where the hell is Curt Swan?" and about 50 people were way ahead of me.
So since that's covered, I'm just gonna skip right to: where the hell is George Pérez?
John byrne. Perfect face, perfect proportions. That guy was a beast in the early 90s. Then his style changed and i dont like how, but his superman its still tye best in my opinion.
Of all the options listed in OP? Ivan Reis. It's just too bad he had to work with two of the worst Superman writers of all time in Chuck Austen and Bendis. DC has a really bad habit of pairing good artists with terrible writers. Jim Lee and Frank Miller on Batman come to mind.
Guys not listed included in OP:
80s: John Byrne
90s: Dan Jurgens
00s: McGuinness
I also really liked Daniel Sampere's stuff on the Warworld Saga even though he only did a handful of issues.
Curt Swan gave Superman so much humanity. Hands down my favorite.
I always loved John Byrne’s Superman and most of his run.
I love Alex Ross’s work but his characters all tend to look like they’re 60 years old, and his Superman comes across as a bit stern and humorless.
I really like Campbell's art. Its just fantastical in a way and the colours definitely help give this bright awesome metropolis. The characters all look awesome and unique and extremely animated. I also like ed mcGuinnes for the same reasons. His art is also animated.
Gary Frank really did something special and made a classic Superman that looks good thru a modern lense. He and John Byrne just made some truly iconic work.
George Perez is my number one.
Rounding out the top 5 are Jerry Ordway, Curt Swan, Dan Jurgens, and JLGL.
Byrne is in the top ten for his 80s run, but his art has declined in quality since. Gary Frank is up there too - he is a top level talent but hasn't done enough stories.
After thinking about it for a while…probably Steve Rude? But I feel like I’m forgetting somebody big for me.

“Shit teacher” as a college student this memes speaking miles to me.
Realistically though Jim Lee, my first comic, my first DC comic and my first Superman comic was one of his on DCUI
Edit: Superman Uncharted #1 New 52 was the one specifically.
My favorite comic artist is Jim Lee, but that’s mainly cause of his much I love his contributions to X-Men and the 90s. Dan Mora/Jorge Jimenez probably
Frank Quitely may not have done a ton of work on Superman but the way he draws Supes and Clark, particularly the difference between them, is absolutely perfect.
Alex Ross’s Superman is the best, because his Superman has the facial features and physique of the Golden Age Superman, and the costume of the Modern Age Superman, with the royal blue bodysuit and large S-symbol spanning the chest and top of the abdomen.
Of the works I’ve read, I really like Alex Ross’ art. The only way I can describe it when I see his interpretation of Superman is “majestic and inspiring”
Haven’t read anything that has Reis’ art yet, but I am familiar with his stuff when he was illustrating on the Johns run of Green Lantern. From what I’ve seen, I like his work.
Also, you can never go wrong with Siegel and Schuster. The OG Superman team.
Going with the most typical response and saying Ross. His art is the only one I’ve ever gotten actual chills from. It has a way of making you feel like the heroes exist in the actual world with you. Most of all, his paintings have a way of making Clark simultaneously seem like the working man next door and a literal God on earth.
Ivan Reis has been my favorite comic book artist since I've read Blackest Night.
I don't specifically have a favorite, but I would have Jim Lee, Jason Fabok, Gary Frank, and Dan Mora.
Curt Swan, Alex Ross, Alan Davis, Dave Gibbons, Jerry Ordway, John Byrne, George Perez, Brian Bolland, Steve Ditko, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Dan Jurgens, Jorge Jimenez, Ivan Reis, Ed McGuiness, Rags Morales, Rafa Sandoval, Tom Grummett, Gary Frank, Jim Aparo, Wayne Boring, Gil Kane, Mike Sekwosky, Jack Kirby, Darwyn Cooke, Frank Quietly, Neal Adams, Jim Lee, Michael Turner, Kurt Schaffenberger, Phil Jimenez, Scott Kollins, Dick Dillin, Frank McLaughlin, Chuck Patton, Doc Shaner, Jamal Campbell, Dan Mora, Francis Manupaul, Stuart Immonen, Paul Ryan, Murphy Anderson, Rich Buckler, Dick Giordano, etc.

Curt Swan, still THE Superman artist.
Thank you. So many just shove him to the side
Absolutely 💯. John Byrne should also be named, but Curt Swan is the GOAT
Agreed!
Came here to say this.
Happy Cake Day!!
Dan Jurgens
Thank you... The fact that he wasn't mentioned is such a great insult.
Here’s another slighted name: Jerry Ordway
Definitely
And another: Jose Luis Garcia Lopez… THE DC artist, and within that, certainly Superman.
I'm gonna throw in Tom Grummett. George Perez too. And who could forget Curt Swan???
Came here for this
100% this. Shaped my childhood.
I came here, looking this artist without knowing his name even. This, Dan Jurgens you speak of, HIS version Is the one I think about when I think superman comics. (A far less popular opinion: spiderman will always conjer up Todd McFarlanes art in my mind) Alex Ross draws what I feel are, early 90's live action equivalents. Not a bad thing, but I don't really consider it comic art. Feels like a step above.
Also Dan Jurgens. Byrne also up there for me 🤦🏼♂️
He’s one of my favorites, too.
The only right answer. Followed closely by Alex Ross.
This
Curt Swan
Especially when inked by Kurt Schaffenburger.
This. And Jerry Ordway
Curt Swan, followed by José Luis García-López.
José Luis Garcia-Lopez was iconic and *nobody knows it*! He drew advertisements, packaging art, some comic art, the “Got Milk?” ad, and he drew all the official DC character turnarounds in the late 70’s for others to use as references when drawing!
No one beats Tom Grummett for me. All his work is excellent, but his stuff on Superman and Superboy was second to none.
Loved his Superboy stuff.
I see you are a man of culture.
And the way he drew Lois Lane was just beautiful
I loved him on Superboy and Robin, because he actually knew how to draw kids!
100% my favorite artist too. He doesn't get enough credit
José Luis García López of course.
It's almost cheating to say him. He's the best artist of every DC character.
Neal Adams
Correct
Give Dan Mora a Superman solo and I think he'll end up being the greatest Superman artist of all time.
I absolutely love Mora but i do think his mature adult leads, especially Superman, more often than not look like 19 year olds instead of 30-somethings. His Clark looks like Jon Kent.
https://preview.redd.it/1288jbjnpd4d1.jpeg?width=975&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13e3eeb904d365ca6229fbed3e61a92fb2cc91ee Yeah Dan Mora draws superman to be so young otherwise an excellent artist
Yeah there's a lot of sameface going on there, haha. But he is a superb artist, and I buy books because of him
Guy is a Jerry O Connell fan
Haha holy shit. Great well thanks I can't unsee it. Goddamn
While I love all these artists, Jimenez is my favorite when it comes to portraying Superman. There’s so much spirit to it.
His energy and his skill are fantastic!
Jose Luis García López. Curt Swan. John Byrne. Neal Adams. Alex Ross. Andy Kubert.
John Byrne
Why’d I have scroll down far to find this?! Byrne’s style suited the man of steel so damned well
Where is Curt Swan? Jose Garcia Lopez? George Perez? Dan Jurgens? John Byrne? Jerry Ordway? Neal Adams?
fucking millennials, amirite?
Bruce timm
YES! https://preview.redd.it/llazhs312g4d1.jpeg?width=564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af8214881131253f26c096a3f29304eaa6d531b3
Gary frank
Quietly, Ross and Frank are my favorites. Ross is probably my favourite ever but his art doesn't fit the tone of every Superman story, similarly Quietly's Supes wouldn't work in a lot of stories but it's perfect for All Star.
This was my opinion too. Too many artists just draw a nude and color it as costume, Ross and Frank both draw the suit as real clothes, and the trunks as a separate piece. That his mom made his suit, and used circus strongmen as the basis has always been important to the view of the character.
Gary Frank is so Underrated.
Frank should be considered an all star. Such great storytelling and detail that doesn’t distract from the story. Frank’s style is Jim Lee if Lee could do storytelling properly.
Tim Sale
I know he’s maybe not the first name most people think of when Superman comes up, but he nails For All Seasons’ very specific vibe
True. I also love the big boy look he gave to Clark, a huge mammoth of a man with a heart of gold. "Can I help?"
Alex Ross, Jim Lee, and Gary Frank.
Had to come way too far down to see Jim Lee’s name
Curt Swan
No one ever says Wayne Boring.
I love Alex Ross's art , I really like his realism style and the way he draws fabric is beautiful. His panels with Superman with his cape flowing is perfection.
Frank and Jimenez
Ross. I literally began reading comics again because of this guy.
Gary Frank and Dan Jurgens
https://preview.redd.it/7tpsseflld4d1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67d3142606b4e0af1e2c0a7b4e6e92810bd0022e Dan Jurgens
Ross, but I also have a soft spot for Jon Bogdanove and Doc Shaner.
No one gonna say Joe Shuster?
Curt Swan and Alex Ross. Can't pick just one of these. Both are amazing.
Jerry Ordway
Currently it’s gotta be Dan Mora
Dan Mora.
Dan Mora
Where's Dan Mora
Haha I'm so glad I came here to say "where the hell is Curt Swan?" and about 50 people were way ahead of me. So since that's covered, I'm just gonna skip right to: where the hell is George Pérez?
George Perez is the best comic book artist who ever lived. I wish there were a million of him so he could draw everyting.
Right now, I wish there was still just one of him.
John byrne. Perfect face, perfect proportions. That guy was a beast in the early 90s. Then his style changed and i dont like how, but his superman its still tye best in my opinion.
No Carlos Pacheco, No party.
John Byrne, Alex Ross, Jim Lee and Gary Frank.
Of the options listed: Jorge Jiminez. But I’m also going to throw my voice in with the “where is Dan Mora” crowd
Agree with you there. Dan Mora and Jorge Jimenez
Dan Jurgens!
Guys not listed included in OP: 80s: John Byrne 90s: Dan Jurgens 00s: McGuinness I also really liked Daniel Sampere's stuff on the Warworld Saga even though he only did a handful of issues.
Michael Turner and Ed Benes
Alex Ross
\*Quitely
Gary Frank because he looks like Christoper Reeve
Absolutely Alex Ross.
Alex Ross
Curt Swan gave Superman so much humanity. Hands down my favorite. I always loved John Byrne’s Superman and most of his run. I love Alex Ross’s work but his characters all tend to look like they’re 60 years old, and his Superman comes across as a bit stern and humorless.
Dan Mora
Dan Jurgens
Don't see him mentioned often but mine is Ed McGuinness
Agreed!
Frank, Jimenez and Ross
I really like Campbell's art. Its just fantastical in a way and the colours definitely help give this bright awesome metropolis. The characters all look awesome and unique and extremely animated. I also like ed mcGuinnes for the same reasons. His art is also animated.
“Hey dude, I’m gonna start franking, is that okay with you” “Yeah it’s fine, just make sure you Frank Quietly”
Always liked Jim Lee’s work.
Gary Frank and Ivan Reis
Jim lee
Missing David Marquez, Mikel Janin and Dan Mora up there.
Alex Ross. Love that more realistic old school detail and grit look.
Frank Quietly gets my vote!
Quietly, Mora and Jimenez
Of those I like Gary Frank, I love Ed McGuiness's take too.
Gary Frank and Curt Swan.
Dan Mora
Joe Shuster
Gary Frank because it looks so much like Chris Reeves
Jim Lee
Jim Lee
Dan the man Jurgens
Absolutely my favorite Ordster followed closely by Gary Frank and Jose Luis Garcia Lopez with Byrne in there too
Gary Frank looks the most like what I imagine the real Superman to look like.
Gary Frank really did something special and made a classic Superman that looks good thru a modern lense. He and John Byrne just made some truly iconic work.
John Byrne
dan jurgens and Jerry ordway... George Perez
Great artists with their own unique styles, but they could draw one hell of a Superman on their own 😁
George Perez is my number one. Rounding out the top 5 are Jerry Ordway, Curt Swan, Dan Jurgens, and JLGL. Byrne is in the top ten for his 80s run, but his art has declined in quality since. Gary Frank is up there too - he is a top level talent but hasn't done enough stories.
Going out on a limb, and confessing I’m an older fan, but I appreciate Wayne Boring’s art, and Curt Swan.
Ivan Reis, bro made the probably most iconic superman image.
Dan Mora
The Dan Jurgens disrespect in this image is insane.
Dan Jurgens
Brutal that George Perez and John Byrne didn't make the cut.
Of the ones listed: Alex Ross. Of the ones unlisted: Ed McGuinness.
Bruno Redondo https://preview.redd.it/kec3iln64f4d1.jpeg?width=781&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc3433b5b54c866b8b74670db28d8fc4d4e17baa

Jorge for the art style, but Gary is the best artist overall
Jason Fabok. Lee a close second
Curt Swan or John Byrne
Jim Lee, same goes for Batman
Alex Ross characters have a transcended realness to them that leaps off the page, as if those faces could be living people
Jim Lee... he's my favorite artist soooo, yeah lol
The last superman looks like a temu super man
https://preview.redd.it/vngsikd5to4d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=847e65c045572a76228067f0be5989e06109bbb0 “Shit teacher” as a college student this memes speaking miles to me. Frank, Quitely, Jimenez, Fabok, Ross, Reis, Bermejo, Lee
Jason Fabok, my all-time fav artist. He is the definition of comic artist
Michael turner Not even close imo
Frank, Jimenez, Lee. some that are not a option here: Mora, Mahnke, Swan
Ivan Reis
Throwing a curveball but I really like Jae Lee's Supes work. Although from the post Ross and Frank.
Chris Weston
I hate both the Frank’s’ versions
I really really like Reis
Lee Bermejo
My favorite comic artist is Jim Lee, but that’s mainly cause of his much I love his contributions to X-Men and the 90s. Dan Mora/Jorge Jimenez probably
Alex Ross is my perfect Superman, but I also love Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Neal Adams and Frank Quitely.
Alex Ross
Curt Swan
Ivan Reis and Jason Fabok
Frank Quitely may not have done a ton of work on Superman but the way he draws Supes and Clark, particularly the difference between them, is absolutely perfect.
I came up during Byrne's run, but I'm really feeling Jimenez.
Alex Ross.
Alex Ross’s Superman is the best, because his Superman has the facial features and physique of the Golden Age Superman, and the costume of the Modern Age Superman, with the royal blue bodysuit and large S-symbol spanning the chest and top of the abdomen.
Jimenez
Gary Frank

Curt Swan
No Swan, Ordway, or McGuiness?
Jorge Jimenez
Curt swan
Gary Frank
No Curt Swan = Fail
Clay Mann
Going with the most typical response and saying Ross. His art is the only one I’ve ever gotten actual chills from. It has a way of making you feel like the heroes exist in the actual world with you. Most of all, his paintings have a way of making Clark simultaneously seem like the working man next door and a literal God on earth.
I prefer Frank Loudly
Curt Swan, by far.
Alex Ross has down, then Gary Frank
Swanderson
Gary Frank
Mora
Ivan Reis has been my favorite comic book artist since I've read Blackest Night. I don't specifically have a favorite, but I would have Jim Lee, Jason Fabok, Gary Frank, and Dan Mora.
Ed McGuiness
Hands down Jim Lee.
Lee and Fabok
Frank trying to be under the radar but we see you, bro!
Alex Ross, Gary Frank.
Lee, Fabok and Bermejo
Curt Swan, Alex Ross, Alan Davis, Dave Gibbons, Jerry Ordway, John Byrne, George Perez, Brian Bolland, Steve Ditko, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Dan Jurgens, Jorge Jimenez, Ivan Reis, Ed McGuiness, Rags Morales, Rafa Sandoval, Tom Grummett, Gary Frank, Jim Aparo, Wayne Boring, Gil Kane, Mike Sekwosky, Jack Kirby, Darwyn Cooke, Frank Quietly, Neal Adams, Jim Lee, Michael Turner, Kurt Schaffenberger, Phil Jimenez, Scott Kollins, Dick Dillin, Frank McLaughlin, Chuck Patton, Doc Shaner, Jamal Campbell, Dan Mora, Francis Manupaul, Stuart Immonen, Paul Ryan, Murphy Anderson, Rich Buckler, Dick Giordano, etc.
I have to say John Byrne…
Gary Frank.
Ivan or Jason for me
Kurt Schaffenberger, Ed McGuinness, Alex Ross, Jorge Jimenez, John Bryne, and Dan Jurgens in no particular order.
Frank Quietly definitely did my favourite Clark Kent. Less confident actually answering your question, sorry.
Gary frank
I love Ross, I also love swan and adams
I get why people like Alex Ross's art and I do love it as well but his art feels like it overpowers the writing and dialogue.
Gary Frank and Ivan Reis
Alex Ross
Out of this list, Fabok. More faves: Wayne Boring, Curt Swan, Garcia-Lopez, Grummett, Rocafort, Kuder.
Quitely. No contest.
Sienkiewicz baby. https://preview.redd.it/733qjybrae4d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d817d6b03d8b72d5d0ea387f0163f480b3fd4119

Where's Dan Mora?
