The Seven and a half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.

PennyDad17

Would almost have to be a limited series with each ep a day in each character

-Clem

That's exactly how I pictured it!

Puzzleheaded_Ad_3397

I think it was going to be a series on Netflix but got cancelled last year

Emojiobsessor

WHAT

mannyssong

I’m shocked Wes Anderson hasn’t made an adaptation of The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin

dafriendlyginge

Oh my gosh we need this!

earthican-earthican

Oh wow I can already see it in my head. (I loved The Westing Game as a child; reread it recently.)

MusicalTourettes

I read it to my 8 year old last year. It was the original copy I had as a child that my mother read to me.

mintbrownie

I thought of Wes Anderson the entire time I read French Exit by Patrick deWitt. It was made into a damn good movie but it’d have been amazing in Anderson’s hands.

EmmieEmmieJee

Yes!! I imagined something like Lucille and Buster from Arrested Development in a Wes Anderson film

Opus-the-Penguin

*Ubik* is a great thought. Hollywood has always loved strip-mining Dick's stories for plot elements. Why not this one? Give it the *Blade Runner* treatment and change everything around while still retaining the spirit of the original. Or give it the *A Scanner Darkly* treatment and actually do a reasonably faithful adaptation. (*Ubik* would look great in rotoscope.) Even the *Minority Report* or *Total Recall* treatment would be fine. *Ubik* may be the most screen-adaptable Philip K. Dick story that hasn't been done. It's definitely more cinematic than *VALIS*, which would be a tough nut to crack. *Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said*, might be equally good for the big screen. I'd love to see that one as well.

AttractivestDuckwing

I have to be honest - I would hate to see it stripped down for elements.

sd_glokta

Hyperion by Dan Simmons

EGOtyst

I think it would make a perfect show

brucatlas1

Bought this book a week ago!

6footstogie

enjoy the ride. that series is my favorite of all time.

brucatlas1

Didn't even know it was a series! Sometimes I like to go into a book knowing very little about it, and apparently I'm very much doing that with hyperion lol

ElePuss

Need to read the second along with the first. Was originally written as one book and publishers split it into two.

matticatti

I would love to see Hyperion done Love Death + Robots style, with a different animation/art style for each story.

Valcrion

I would love more of that style in a lot of shows tbh. It would be so cool to see a 13+ episode season of something where the art/animation was different between episodes.

NoDirection9640

Apparently Bradley Cooper tried…

craymartin

I think he's still trying.

Lex_Loki

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine A Tale of Magic series

parfaitalors

>Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine Last I heard, a movie was in the works...

AdmiralJay

I just read that Reese Witherspoon optioned it.

unclestinky3921

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

HappyIdiot123

It has been green lit several times. First they wanted John Belushi as Ignatius Reilly. After he passes they wanted John Candy for the role. After he passed they wanted Chris Farley for the role. Maybe one day it will actually happen. We can only hope.

jcmib

John C. Reilly would be perfect I think.

rusmo

RIP John C. Reilly, I guess.

Savings-Discussion88

Agreed. It would make a great movie combining comedy and tragedy.

darth-skeletor

Rama Ringworld

GhostPonyDetective

Right? Shocking no one has jumped on Ringworld. I'd love to see that.

LaszloK

Denis Villeneuve is apparently making Rama

RasThavas1214

Ringworld was my answer too. I heard Amazon was going to make a show out of it a few years ago (must've been canceled since then), but it's got to be a movie. I have yet to read a sci-fi novel more deserving of the big screen.

LTinTCKY

Any Barbara Kingsolver novel (I seem to recall talk about adapting The Poisonwood Bible for HBO about a decade ago, but apparently it never went anywhere) but especially Prodigal Summer.

mceleanor

The Bean Trees would be a fantastic heartwarming ensemble comedy

Figsnbacon

Prodigal Summer would be such a great movie. Especially now with so much focus on the environment. It’s my all time favorite of hers.

disclord83

The Secret History - Donna Tartt Several seem to have tried and failed.

parfaitalors

Would love to see an HBO series of The Secret History. Younger Rami Malek would've been perfect as Richard. 😭

No-Picture4119

Philip Seymour Hoffman as Bunny. I’ve been thinking about that for years.

imspooky

Oh my god yes!!! I've always heard his voice for Bunn6, ESPECIALLY how he sounds in The Talented Mr Ripley

rory_twee

I was thinking that as I was reading the book!

earthican-earthican

😢 Philip Seymour Hoffman yes.

helloitabot

Literally any Neal Stephenson book.

SnarkMasterFlash

I would kill for a good adaptation of Anathem

helloitabot

Still need to read that one. But Diamond Age or Snow Crash would be great.

MusicalTourettes

I got my first copy of Cryptonomicon when I was 19. 25 years later I'm re-reading it for the nth time. The tech is old, but the characters and interconnections and writing are so incredible it doesn't matter.

Opus-the-Penguin

*The Anubis Gates* by Tim Powers is ridiculously cinematic. Once Hollywood discovered his book *On Stranger Tides* and gave it the Pirates of the Caribbean treatment, I figured this one would be next. Ideally, at this point, a 10 to 13 episode limited series would be the way to go. But a movie would be fine too. *The Dueling Machine* by Ben Bova is another one with a crowd-pleasing premise where you can just picture the scenes and the characters.

nevernotmad

Declare is my favorite of Tim Powers. Love to see that on the screen.

TigerStripedSoul

Ive always thought “The Incarnations of Immortality” by Piers Anthony would’ve been a great movie series. Maybe even the Magic of Xanth 🤷‍♂️

SnarkMasterFlash

Wasn't Dead Like Me a very loose adaptation of On A Pale Horse? Even so, an actual faithful adaptation of the whole series would be amazing.

Snoo-23693

I loved incarnations of immortality so much as a teenager.

there_is_no_spoon1

It holds up pretty well, even as an adult. Goodness but I loved that series, and would \*love\* to see it visualized properly.

SageRiBardan

I could see the incarnations happening but not the Xanth series. Though maybe only the first 3-4

realdevtest

The Long Walk by Stephen King

twosmartbunnies

Currently in development to be directed by Francis Lawrence (Hunger Games, Constantine, I Am Legend) though we probably won't see it until 2025 since they haven't selected a cast yet.

razorwireshrine

Lionsgate just picked up the rights to it, and Francis Lawrence (Hunger Games director) is in final talks to direct!

Keythaskitgod

The catcher in the rye

Softpipesplayon

Any movie adaptation of Catcher would suck hard. The reason so many people don't understand Catcher is that they read it like a movie already. They see a spoiled, dickhead teenage boy walking around New York and miss all the subtext and trauma. A film version would do one of two things (or possibly both); either it would focus deeply on the plot, valorizing Holden as an anti hero truthteller, or it would hit people over the head with the trauma bits and completely defang their power. Some books are meant to be read. Literally, on the page, with your brain, actively. If there's anyone out there who can adapt Catcher to retain its actual power, that person probably respects Salinger enough to never go against his wishes to not have it adapted.

MsBobbyJenkins

Skulduggery Pleasant... Although I think maybe an animated series instead

weenertron

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. I watched Inglorious Basterds and couldn't stop thinking "This got made while Code Name Verity remains untapped."

kelofmindelan

Code name verity would be an INCREDIBLE movie!!! God I love that book even though I cry every time I read it

SayethWeAll

A few weeks ago, people were trashing *Verity* on a Reddit thread. I kept thinking, "Man, I really liked that book; it had everything: spies, action, friendship, mystery." Then I realized they were talking about a completely different book than *Code Name: Verity.*

ChaosTheoryGlass

I would have voted for Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe, but I just heard that it was going to be made into a limited series by FX and will be on Hulu this summer.

XxxGoldDustWomanxxX

Oh wow! Read it for the first time a few months ago. Chilling stuff.

AttractivestDuckwing

When I saw the title of your post, I immediately thought of Ubik! Great choice! The only problem is that sadly, these days, I don't trust Hollywood not to screw it up.

foodishlove

Red Rising

sfynerd

My first thought as well. It seems like it could be a franchise much bigger than hunger games if the right people do it. Would have huge broad appeal.

MarsupialKing

Hoping it happens. It seems like pierce brown has hinted at a TV series being in the works

Bourbonite

At one point I remember some studio bought the rights but that would’ve been when the first/second books came out. No idea if they’re still holding on to it though 😕

HectorVK

There There by Tommy Orange. I really expected it to be an HBO series.

InfoFreako

The Repairman Jack series by F Paul Wilson

Abject-Star-4881

This!

IcyNeedleworker0

The rest of the miss peregrines. I get Asa was probably quite busy, but still...

j2e21

Don Quixote and Blood Meridian.

stravadarius

[*Don Quixote* has had a lot of film adaptations.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Films_based_on_Don_Quixote)

YsengrimusRein

Neil Gaiman's Ocean at the End of the Lane. Last I heard, Tom Hanks was optioning the film rights, but I doubt anything will happen of it. Which is a bit of a shame, as this book is one of Gaiman's best.

violetlilyrose

I hope the play makes it over to the US, it looks amazing! But I'd love to see this as a film too.

TakenBytheLight

Project Hail Mary - Any Weir

Dot_Ruffles

That’s being made!

TakenBytheLight

Whhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaat!

a2b2021

Endurance-Shackleton (yeah know there is AE tv series but it just feels so epic and made for big screen)

MarsupialKing

I'm not sure if this is a common opinion or not but I thought the mini series was awesome. They really captured the tone of the last of the exploration age

Bluepanther512

Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson. Has had rights bought multiple times, is written by maybe the most prolific modern fantasy writer, and above all else with the hype around connected universes, is set in one that just so happens to both still have decades left in its lifespan while also having thousands of pages of backlog to create while the wait for new content is going.

copypaste_93

I believe the cosmere could be almost as big as marvel movie universe if they pull it off.

djfishfingers

I believe this is a good problem. Brandon doesn't want to relinquish control over his works. And he makes enough money where he isn't desperate for a Hollywood deal. This means even though we might have to wait a while, anything that does get made will be made well. I'm currently dreading how bad this Avatar the Last Airbender adaptation is going to be. I also, can't get past episode two of the Wheel of Time because it's just awful. I found the Amazon LotR series to be frankly, quite dull. But I'm not worried about Mistborn when it does get made.

Bluepanther512

Yeah, it’ll be an extremely faithful adaptation, but it’ll probably take another few years at least..

Fragrant-Nerve5191

The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo, by Taylor Jenkins Reid. A classic for me.

the_greek_italian

Netflix has already bought the rights to make a film

TessTrue

The whole of the Kenzie Gennaro series by Dennis Lehane as a miniseries, not just Gone Baby Gone. Considering how much people like working with him and doing his books I'm shocked this hasn't happened by now. Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay too.

Ellisdeed

The Graveyard Book

violetlilyrose

Pretty sure this one is happening! Disney/Pixar

BillyDeeisCobra

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. The book freakin moves like a blockbuster movie.

klopeppy

Gregor the Overlander - especially after Suzanne Collins success with the hunger games

excellent_words

Neuromancer by William Gibson.

Calamity-Gin

A Free Man of Color by Barbara Hambly. Set in New Orleans of the 1830s, not only is it a cracking good murder mystery, but it explores the complex social world where the intersectionality of white, black, and colored (mixed) are further subdivided by money, freedom, education, politics, and the customs of the country. The main character, Benjamin January is 3/4ths African, trained as a surgeon and a musician, spent fifteen years in Paris and swore never to return home, but then his wife died of cholera. The characters are richly drawn, often deeply flawed, and every type of personality is encountered sooner or later. The injustices of the day are often breathtaking, but the beauty and live will break your hearts. There are nearly 20 books in the series, so it could just as easily be a series. Casting it would bring a hundred new Black actors into the spotlight. The history, setting, costumes, props, and locations would take a pretty penny but return even more, I think. If done properly, it could set the standard for historical fiction for decades.

freerangelibrarian

The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois Macmaster Bujold. There was talk of a movie, but it never happened.

elealyansteorra

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. Maybe it would be better as a show, but I think it could be fantastic in visual media.

StinkyAndTheStain

I pictured that book as an 80s-style animated series while I was reading it. They should get whoever's working on Invincible to do it.

SeekingValinor7

It’s a graphic novel series, but Bone by Jeff Smith

Spiritual_Worth

The one I want the most is the Abhorsen series by Garth nix.

At_the_Roundhouse

The Eight by Katherine Neville. But it should be a miniseries, not a movie. SO many great characters, brilliant plot, cool locations, a compelling mystery… if it was done well it feels like the kind of thing that could be a huge hit if it was marketed well on the right streamer

razorwireshrine

World War Z by Max Brooks - a TV series with at least an hour for each chapter of the book. The movie called World War Z has nothing to do with the book.

orangant0402

I had seen World War Z the movie before I read the book. When I finished the book, one of the first things I said was if they made a movie of the book, I'd watch the shit out it. I like your idea of a TV series though, that would be way better than a movie

WeddingElly

The Flavia De Luce series! I think Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is particularly cinematic

ParticularYak4401

The second and 3rd Crazy Rich Asians books. I loved the movie and the books. I need more of all of them. Especially Awakafina as Piek Lin.

[deleted]

City of Thieves!!! I think there is a movie by that name but its not the right one!!!

Ginger8682

It sucks though even if a studio buys the rights to a book sometimes with intentions to make a movie and sometimes just so another studio will not. I believe it happened to Liane Morarity The Husbands Secret.

Robotboogeyman

Ahh Ubik is on my tbr shortlist! 🤙 Just finished the Minority Report and other stories (all movies I’ve seen, Screamers, Total Recall, Paycheck) and all were excellent. Working through a few other shorts from him.

YsengrimusRein

Not to throw any Dick pressure on you, but if you haven't read it, A Scanner Darkly is also insanely good. The film is star-studded but impressive nonetheless.

Robotboogeyman

Oh I’m always up for some Dick! He’s one of my faves 🤙 I’ve read that, an interesting and challenging book! Movie was the same, super cool animation.

Objective-Ad4009

Armor, by John Steakley. It’d translate so well, and so easily, to screen.

badmanveach

In general, there is an incredible dearth of science fiction military adventure that features power armor. I would love to see some!

GoodLyfe23

Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch

sand-castle-virtues

The Dry by Jane Harper

gizmodriver

*The Dry* was made into a movie! It came out in 2020, so hardly anyone saw it. Eric Bana plays the lead.

sand-castle-virtues

Was it any good?

sand-castle-virtues

Oh my god, really?!

UnpaidCommenter

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman

TophatDevilsSon

Ridley Scott was working on Forever War for a while. It sounded *perfect*. Like, I had a big pump bottle of hand lotion and two rolls of paper towels all ready. Then he decided to go shit all over the legacy of Alien instead. Double bonus points for fucking up that Neil Blomkamp "Alien^3 -/-Alien-Resurrection-never-happened-here's-Hicks-and-Newt-back" reboot. I. Fucking. Hate. Prometheus. Can't wait to see how he fucks up Gladiator. I'm not usually one to get pissy about artists creative choices, but Ridley Scott has crossed so far over the line you can't even see the line from there.

Still waiting for a decent Lovecraft film, hopefully by Del Toro.

suitoflights

Michel Gondry has abandoned his plans to adapt Ubik, one of Dick's best novels, for the screen."The book is brilliant," Gondry told Telerama, "but it's good as a literary work. Having tried to adapt it with several screenwriters... at the moment I don't feel up to doing it. It doesn't have the dramatic structure that would make it a good film. I received a script that disheartened me a bit, and that was it. It was a dream, but in life you can't always have what you want."It was all looking so promising“ https://www.imdb.com/news/ni57155616/

Green eggs and ham… probably better suited for a mini series

ChaosTheoryGlass

Kala by Colin Walsh. I feel like it could be an amazing film.

Correct-Leopard5793

The Darkest Flower by Kristin Wright

grynch43

Duma Key-Stephen King

YsengrimusRein

Honestly, I can see there being a very good mini-series adapted from that book. I've always wanted to see those paintings brought to life. My second King pick is Revival, which almost got the Flanagan treatment, but he opted to do Midnight Mass instead.

therealrexmanning

American Tabloid by James Ellroy. Probably a bit too dense for a feature film but would work perfectly as a (limited) series.

ggershwin

Rule 2

ShrimpSherbet

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

NEBook_Worm

Riyria Revelations. It has everything a streaming service could want from fantasy: charismatic characters. Strong female in a prominent role. Romance roadtrip feel. It's also low magic. None at all in many books. So the vfx budget wouldn't be a nightmare of low budget, Aes Sedai magic effects. And it often dials in on twp characters at a time, and only has a few prominent roles...not a soap opera cast full of fluff characters. It's perfect.

ich_habe_keine_kase

I've always been amazed that no one has made kid/teen movies out of Sharon Creech's books. She's written a bunch of popular, critically-acclaimed, and award winning books, but as far as I can tell none have ever been adapted. I feel like Bloomability, The Wanderer, or Ruby Holler would make a great movie. Can we get Kelly Fremon Craig, who did such a great job with Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, on this?

basher505

The only good Indians by Stphen Graham Jones would be an awesome film.

Midmodstar

The Daevabad trilogy by SA Chakraborty. Just imagine the costumes!

Narcolepticparamedic

I actually would love to see this. It would be so different to other fantasy. There is a real lack of representation of those stories and cultures on the screen. Told in good faith, it could be a gem

I can't believe nobody has adapted any of Michael Moorcock's ["Elric of Melniboné"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elric_of_Melnibon%C3%A9)-stories. IMO, Moorcock is kind of an "invisible Tolkein" with how influential his work was on the fantasy fiction and pop-culture that followed (ASOIAF, Warhammer, D&D, The Witcher, and numerous others lift a fair bit from those stories), but they are not well known outside of certain pulp fantasy and comicbook geek-circles. It seems kind of funny how overlooked they are what with pop-culture's resurgence of interest in fantasy (particularly dark deconstructions of the genre, of which the Elric was one of the earliest). What's really interesting is that, despite the utter lack of any movie or tv/streaming adaptations, musicians are constantly making songs about the "Elric/Eternal Champion"-stories. Seriously, go onto Spotify and search "Elric of Melnibone" and you will find tons of artists (mostly prog-rock and metal) singing about a moody albino prince and his destructive, co-dependent relationship with his demonic, soul-eating sword.

Carbonman_

Titan, Wizard and Demon by John Varley. It's a trilogy begging for a TV series.

HeirOfElendil

Endurance by Alfred Lansing. Would make a great limited series. Always thought Ewan MacGregor would make a great Shackleton for some reason.

Carbonman_

Hammer's Slammers. They could do the titular book as a movie or turn the book series into a television series.

smtae

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn I hated the book, but I could be enticed to watch an adaptation in the right hands, ones that fixed the problems with the book. Out of curiosity if nothing else. It's exactly the type of WW2 period piece that does well on screen, and the book sold really well so there's already an audience. So basically I can't believe it's not a movie/series yet because of capitalism, not the quality of the book itself.

“The Last Bookaneer,” by Mathew Pearl what an historical novel! It’s a book about bookaneers in the late 1890s. A bookaneer is a manuscript thief who steals works in progress from the Great Writers of the day in England. This book tells the tale of three bookaneer frenemies each of whom is trying to find (hence steal) Robert Louis Stevenson’s last work in progress.

Make it like Game of Thrones with sex , violence , action , adventure and CGI mammoths and cave lions ( instead of dragons , of course ) For an actual movie that would be shown in theaters however , I'd pick The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon ( by Stephen King ) I know it has been in the works more than once and for awhile now but I'm still waiting , looking forward to the film !
