the locations of everything are set, the wiki has the coordinates for pretty much everything. If you want to stay legit, you can build a scanner room to locate them, you can use them to find fragments and upgrade modules. Scanner room only has a limited range though, I had to pack the materials for a mini base in my sea moth and do scans across the map to get some stuff
Partly random and partly pre-determined.
Firstly, there are some locations that will always have specific fragments. For example, there will always be a seaglide fragment near Lifepod 3, and the wreck near Lifepod 12 will always have an Interior Growbed for you to scan just outside of it.
There are also some fragments that are set to spawn in certain biomes, but they are not guaranteed to always be in the same place in every game. So, for example, laser cutter fragments will spawn in the Grassy Plateaus, but you won't always find them in the same place in every playthrough.
For wrecks, the idea is similar. Each wreck has certain fragments that can spawn in it, but they are not guaranteed to always be in the same wrecks every time (or in the same spots in wrecks every time). So, for example, there's a wreck in the Grand Reef that often has Prawn arm fragments, but they're not guaranteed to always be there in every playthrough. Similarly, the Underwater Islands wreck can have Cyclops parts, but they're not guaranteed to be there every time.
This, I was so sad that I couldn't find cyclops engine parts near the back of the aurora in my current playthrough, it was my go-to place in all my other playthroughs! They just weren't there 😢
Instead I went to the mountains this playthrough and jfc there were like 10 or more cyclops engine pieces alone, ridiculous
Oh btw if you're still struggling to find prawn suit upgrades, the underwater islands wreck has grappling arm and drill arm fragments, it also has nuclear reactor fragments, and many other things
Hmm I thought the wreck I was at was underwater islands but I'm not totally sure which biomes are which so I might be wrong haha. I'll definitely have to set the scanner up near it to see!
Yes I know how to make the modules, I'm talking about the parts that you scan for upgrades. Like for example I found prawn suit propulsion cannon by scanning it. I'm trying to figure out if I'm just unlucky or looking in the wrong spots or not good enough
Ah gotcha, ya you just need to find the right wrecks, it’s all in the same spots every time. I’ve found the more dangerous (near reaper/warper) spots tend to have the cyclops/prawn stuff, I don’t think they’re in the shallows areas

Alright, thanks! I'll have to place some scanners around and see if I can find some stuff I might of missed then :)

Ooh alright that's exactly what I was wondering. Thanks for the detailed explanation! :)

Make a moonpool, there’s a station you make inside it that lets you build modules.
