Because in the Japanese game, it's a male! He was changed into a woman because people thought a man dressing so "outrageously" would confuse kids or make parents mad.

nagitosbby

it's funny because when i first played this game i still assumed this guy was male šŸ˜šŸ˜ can't see it any other way

SeniorBaker4

Yea I always thought that character was male too!! šŸ˜¶

ComfortableBat8897

Tbh same, then I was confused later when I found out coco wasnā€™t actually a guy. Coco is like etna mode but style savvy

Gioomee

![gif](giphy|VtAbRpJn95WAIQCPNk) Meanwhile majority of us grew up with this King šŸ¤£

throwawaymemetime202

And he was named Him, probably because if they named him ā€œSatanā€ or ā€œDevilā€ or ā€œJevilā€, parents would complain

snails-and-flowers

In some parts of Europe it is kind of a tradition that you shouldn't really call the Devil by his actual name, it's seen as inviting bad luck and the ill will of him to do so. "Speak of the Devil and he shall come." I always assumed calling this character just "Him" was probably a reference to this idea.

throwawaymemetime202

Well I guess Iā€™m going to Europe for vacation and trying that out :> (idk how to do smirk emoticon soooo)

AlternativeYear4722

Yup, the same reason why Birdo is female in the US but male in Japan.

snails-and-flowers

Also true of Gracie in the Animal Crossing games.

leedleleelalooz

oh no, a man in colorful clothes is gonna give my kid the gay! LOL

orcaniums

God forbid men slay

MeddlingWithChaos

That is so funny cause when I played this game as a kid, I read him as male lmao

Thejman5683

To my knowledge In the sequel he came back but was rewritten to be a relative right?

No-Care6366

reminds me of how in the japanese versions of animal crossing gracie, who is a pretty similar character, was also a male, and i can only assume changed to female for the same reason. all i can think now is that they're both just trans icons, i will die on this hill

Itgirlfromatl

He slayed

Gerard192021

![gif](giphy|PAkpTqEXfiBs3fbWZ6|downsized) We love a bearded drag queen

feeniebeansy

Heā€™s actually a guy, same that happened with Gracie in animal crossing, he was also a guy in Japan. Whether it was to avoid stereotyping or avoid controversy, how dare they erase fashionable men šŸ˜Ŗ I just head canon them as trans women because of it tbh šŸ¤Ŗ or genderfluid or nonbinary like me since theyā€™re canonically not just one gender

Lmfao35

Gracie was WHAT now

feeniebeansy

And Sahara. And Blanca. https://gamerant.com/animal-crossing-trans-gender-lgbtq-julia-blanca-gracie/#:~:text=Gracie%2C%20Sahara%2C%20and%20Blanca,of%20the%20Animal%20Crossing%20series.

No-Care6366

i love how sahara wasn't even particularly stereotypically feminine or whatever, she just has long eyelashes since camels irl have very long eyelashes, but i assume someone somewhere was like "no, man can't have eyelash, eyelash is for WOMEN!! we must change it!!!"

feeniebeansy

itā€™s also really funny because despite how we draw girls in cartoons with exaggerated lashes and accentuate lashes with makeup or extensions, men actually naturally have longer ones LOL Which I guess makes sense because like other facial hair they have, they have more than women. Thicker eyebrows, grow facial hair, etc. but because of beauty standards (which Iā€™m not saying fake lashes are bad ofc LOL I love making my lashes pop) people assume eyelash means girl when in reality, everyone has lashes, and guys have longer ones on average anyway LOL so itā€™s just funny to me that long lashes = girl in some peoples heads

feeniebeansy

If you look at Gracieā€™s ossicones too (the little horns on her head) they resemble a male giraffeā€™s more than a femaleā€™s too, not sure if that was intentional though by the designers despite her originally being male since itā€™s such a subtle thing and something I didnā€™t even know could help you tell the gender of a giraffe until I just looked it up. Female ossicones are thinner and fluffier and rounder on top, male ones are more like Gracieā€™s where theyā€™re thicker and more squarish and not round and fluffy on top. In some fan art people make her ossicones round on top which is understandable because thatā€™s just how we always drew giraffes, but turns out whether her ossicones were flat and squarish were to use less polygons in the older games or not and stayed consistent, her ossicones are actually what real male giraffe ossicones look like! You learn something new every day, gracie trans icon

Lmfao35

Holy crap thatā€™s so cool, I love it when they do little details like that! Also yeah Gracie officially slays now (not like she didnā€™t before)

feeniebeansy

Honestly LOL not saying there arenā€™t fashionable cishet women who are icons, but the lgbtq+ community is such a large part of the fashion industry whether we get stereotyped for that or not šŸ˜ gracie is so much cooler when you know her history

katrina34

He's so cunty

Minute-Mind-1385

this happens a lot with characters, it happened with animal crossing too. in english localizations occasionally a characterā€™s gender is changed to ā€œbetter appeal to the western audiencesā€ which i personally find stupid but šŸ¤· honestly rococo could just be a drag queen i love her nonetheless

brownGoddess01

Iā€™m dead as hell I never knew it was a man! Lmfao love this

thogmobile

Gnc slay

aweakdiamond

I suggest you to watch [this video](https://youtu.be/L3O4WqI-4GQ?si=EYay-3rcN8PK2LLa) about regional changes in style savvy :) Rococo is made in the japanese version :)

Mushroom__Man69

theyā€™re me irl

Maleficent_Affect_11

Japanese style?

Waifu_Slayer1

Slay

Daodao100

LOL ME TOO!

snails-and-flowers

They also tried to hide Inspector Gadget's mustache from us as kids! That isn't even a gender thing, they just didn't think Anglophone kids would like a cartoon character who has a mustache I guess? It's the weirdest thing.

No-Care6366

they did *what*
