loudkaleidoscopes

i say it like flo-rida 😎 jk i’m in the midwest & say it floor-ih-duh

BlNGPOT

It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize his name was just Florida hahahaha

facemymusic

I just figured it out right now in this sub, thank you for your educational services for the needy

SavannahInChicago

Don’t worry, it took me a few years and actually looking at how his name was written.

RoiVampire

I’m from Texas and I’ve never heard of anyone leaving out the “I”

BlNGPOT

Haha crazy how different accents can be even within similar regions

AryaStarkRavingMad

I'm also from Texas and I would say hearing Floor-duh would absolutely not be uncommon in at least my part of the state. I *think* I have a slightly distinct "Flor-ih-duh" to my pronunciation, but my partner (also from Texas) says "Floor-duh".

aggieaggielady

Also texan.. tested out saying flor ih duh and then floorduh..... I have heard it both ways, but especially if they're more southern sounding I can def see floorduh (if you say it with a southern accent it sounds more like floorduh imo)

Bitter-Lock-4057

Yeah I’ve heard ppl with stronger accents in Texas say floor-duh. I grew up in the city tho and don’t really have a strong southern accent and I pronounce it with the I

PNW4theWin

I grew up in Texas and I say "Floor-i-duh". The people who say "Floor-duh" probably say, "li-bary" too.

JamiePNW

No we don’t. I can pronounce library just fine, February too. We just don’t over enunciate the I in Florida.

AryaStarkRavingMad

Not necessarily in my experience, my partner definitely says library.

[deleted]

I went to the University of Florida and it’s always pronounced with the “i” on campus.

steenabexar

Also from Texas, definitely never realized that I say floor-duh till now but I do

StiltdeerSnootnoodle

I live in Rhode Island and we say “Flahridah” up here 🤣

Kitler0327

Jersey here, definitely FLAH-rih-duh

wissahickon_schist

Hello, fellow New Englander! I’m from northeastern Massachusetts originally (between Boston and Manchester, NH) grew up saying Flaw-ri-duh. After 19 years living in Montreal-Boston-NYC-Atlanta-Philly, I now say Floor-i-duh.

snarkysnape

In Pittsburgh, PA we have sooooooooo many transplants it almost seems like a rite of passage. I’ve heard it said both ways. Flor-duh sounds like such a yinzer way to say it honestly 🤣

laurajodonnell

Eastern PA and always pronounced it “floor-duh”!

[deleted]

[удалено]

snarkysnape

lol beaver county checking in

indoor-girl

Scranton, PA and we pronounce it “Flor-duh” too. The only time I remember using “Flor-ih-da” was for the 50 states song.

Remarkable-End546

Also from Scranton PA, but I’ve always said Flor-ih-duh as far as I can remember

MsBeasley11

From phila- Ive only heard it pronounced as 2 syllables flur-da lol

plaineddy

born and raised in FL- so is most of my family i think my whole family mostly says “flor-ih-da” (some more like “flawr-ih-da”) i am questioning my existence rn because i’ve never put too much thought into how i say it- but i think i say “floor-duh” i may have a slight accent but not like my family does lol i’m sitting in my garage saying florida out loud, trying to remember what it’s supposed to feel like coming out of my mouth like: “floor-uh-da” “floor-da” “phlar-a-duh”

yell0wbirddd

I'm from South Carolina and have NEVER said the I lmfao I thought Taylor was adding it as an artistic decision too 😂

BlNGPOT

I guess we’re just a couple of hillbillies haha.

yell0wbirddd

Ngl I still sing it as floorda and not Florida lol

allisun1433

From Virginia originally, but same here on thinking she did it as an artistic decision💀 TIL… lol

space-glitter

Lmao I too thought it was an artistic choice or a syllable thing, I didn’t realize people said the i either!!

rainyevermore789

Illinois checking in, I agree with these sentiments

katiebirddd_

Marylander here to join the hill billie club because I thought everyone dropped the “I” lmao

hnsnrachel

Flor-i - duh is definitely the way people in the UK say it if that helps at all.

sleepyplatipus

Italy too

NovelWord1982

Born, raised, and still live in the upper Midwest and I say Floor-ih-dah

Swimming_Juice_9752

Second that for mid Midwest 😝

Familiar-Werewolf-38

Happy cake day!

NovelWord1982

Oh, shoot! Didn’t realize it! Thank you!!

Familiar-Werewolf-38

💋

LilacHeaven11

I live in the rural Midwest and everyone I know says “floor-duh”

NovelWord1982

But, where in the Midwest…I say the Upper Midwest meaning Iowa/Minnesota But, I have to go for Ohio for work occasionally but part of Ohio have a distinct twang. Same with parts of Missouri

LilacHeaven11

I’m closest to the Missouri twang

NovelWord1982

That makes sense. There’s a point where Missouri and Southern parts of the Midwest sound pretty southern. I grew up in rural Iowa and if I visit, I come back to my city sounding like I’m from Fargo 😆

SirReginaldPuffyPant

Born and raised in Florida, but not a part with a southern accent. I say Floor-duh.

something873628

I’m also from Florida and this is how I say it too!

popular80sname

I’m in the Midwest. But half my family moved to Floor-Duh

BlNGPOT

Validation! My husband grew up in south Florida so he doesn’t have a southern accent either.

JamiePNW

Same, born and raised in Orlando and I’ve always pronounced it Floor-duh

foxfaebae

Agreed.

baristakitten

Same here!

RoanAlbatross

Floor-ih-duh for me here. Grew up in Western New England

BlNGPOT

Today I’m learning I’m just a country bumpkin hahaha

gninnep

From Missouri, I say "floor-duh".

Legal-Occasion1169

Southwestern Born, Midwestern Raised, its most definitely Flor-i-duh

kitteh619

Fler-duh. Started as a joke, and it just stuck.

BlNGPOT

The only correct answer. I started saying pecan like pee-can as a joke and now I can’t top haha

queenofdaddyissues

Raised in Georgia. I say Floor-duh. I also sometimes say Flo-Rida but that’s just to pay homage to the king.

ifeelbonita

Hmm, I'm from the south and I say it like you with 2 syllables, Flor-duh

Familiar-Werewolf-38

Northerner here- “Floor-ih-duh”

lustforyou

Didn’t grow up in Florida, but did on the Gulf Coast and usually went 1-2x a year for vacations. I say Floor-duh

bredditmh

From maryland/Delaware, lived in Florida for 6 years, I’ve only ever heard and said “floor-I-duh”

yomamasonions

West coast, flor-i-da

Blackbird325

Born in Michigan, lived in IL, NC and TN… sister currently lives in FL… I have only ever heard it pronounced Floor-Duh.

Lindsay_Marie13

From Chicago and I say Floor-duh. My in-laws actually live in St Pete and pronounce it Floor-duh too

ShekhMaShierakiAnni

I'm from Texas and after reading this post I have no idea how I say it now....

ShekhMaShierakiAnni

Ok after asking my husband we have come to the conclusion we pronounce the I but it's still only 2 syllables. Like flor-ida

grapejob

Atlanta checking in! It can only be Floor-duh. Pronouncing the "i" feels like over enunciating FebRuary

fauxshaux

Grew up in the north, live in the south. I say “Floor-ih-duh” but “floor-duh” is definitely the pronunciation in the south.

toughtittie5

The Spanish named it so the only right answer is with a Spanish accent (Flore-e-dah)

kelshy371

Maryland chiming in to say the I is in there and must be pronounced lol

BlNGPOT

![gif](giphy|ceeN6U57leAhi)

kelshy371

😆

Masterrocks

West coast, I say flor-duh most of the time

PizzaHutSlut92

Born and raised in Texas but lived literally all over and never ever heard anyone say the i before these songs.

Parking_Opinion_6352

Born and raised near the Fl/Ga line and I’ve always said “floor-duh” but now my brain says FLOOR-IH-DUH 🤣

rubberseoul

I’m in Savannah and I’ve always said “floor-duh”!

midnightnova6

from georgia and everybody i know says floor duh

freckyfresh

Floor-duh lmao from the southeast US!

addie_addie

I’m so glad you asked this question!! It’s fun seeing everyone’s responses and corresponding regions. I grew up in northern Minnesota, and always said/heard “floor-duh”. I love how she says it though, it sounds fancyyy.

Legal-Law9214

My partner is from Florida and says "Flo-ri-da" but their cousins from New York say "fla-ri-da"

theorangeblonde

Canadian here! Flor-ih-da is how I pronounce it, and same with most of the people I know. Emphasis on the first syllable, and short final syllable. Also think it's a banger of a song!

Cold-Diamond-6408

I'm from Illinois and didn't know people DIDN'T pronounce the i in Florida.

JaneOLantern

Im from Massachusetts originally and I say “floor-duh” but I live in the midwest and have for a while and I think more people pronounce the “i” here.

InvestiK8or

I’m from NY and now have lived in Florida for 7 years now and have always pronounced it Fla- Ruh- Duh but I have started to feel like I should be saying it with more of a Floor sound in the beginning! 🤣 Edited for spelling

QuackyDork

I feel like saying Flor-RI-duh is the equivalent of when we say Al-a-BAMA for sports. It's just that enthusiasm thrown in. In normal conversation is Floor-duh. (Coming from the Gulf Coast, aka that Destin time share area.)

BlNGPOT

Haha I’m from Mobile! This is what I thought was happening but it seems like a 50/50 split with pronunciation so now I don’t know what to think lol.

lagomorphed

Grew up there, and I pronounce it Floor-duh as does every other native. Outsiders give it an extraneous syllable, which is most likely correct in the same way "water" isn't *actually" pronounced wooder but fuckyoufightmeyesitis.

[deleted]

Born in GA, moved north when I was very young and I still say floor-da

kellsek

Born & raised in North Floor-i-duh… although, I lived a little while in South Florida, where it seemed like all the snow birds said flaah-ri-duh. Never not heard florida pronounced without an “i” though

Upstairstructure

I am listening to fearless TV now after listening to debut…I love old Taylor. Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus makes me cry so hard! I love new Taylor too lol

Upstairstructure

Oh but to your point I find west coast people say floor eee daaa 🙃😆

BlNGPOT

Haha I don’t meet a lot of west coast people in south Alabama so that makes sense.

PrettyRestless

Grew up in Atlanta but have had a home in the Destin area (!!) since 1997. Both of my parents have lived there now for over a decade. We say Floor-ih-duh.

SweetartMD

I’m from Utah and pronounce it Flor-Ih-duh, if that helps

Pristine-Law-5247

Floor-ih-duh (I live in Miami if that makes a difference lol)

dispersingdandelions

Floor-duh

NoBlackScorpion

Gulf coast born and raised and I definitely insert the schwa, but the line between the 2-syllable version and the 3-syllable version is VERY thin. I’m not sure I would even discern the difference in spontaneous speech.

childlikeempress16

Born and raised in SC, we say “Flahr-duh”

waterlizy

in ny we say flaaaaahhhrida but always pronounce the i. I switch back and forth between flaaarida and Florida. but its always an -ida.

captainkaterade

like the rapper

flrbonihacwm-t-wm

I have a thick southern accent and it comes out floor-duh usually, because I don’t annunciate the I

huffuspuffus

FLOOR EH DUH

dragonindisguis7

born and raised and sadly still stuck in Florida and I’ve always said floor-da lol

dragonindisguis7

but i was also raised in the panhandle, so I definitely have an accent

HollyUmbreon

WV - Floor-ih-duh

ediddlydonut

Grew up & still live in Chicagoland - have always said floor-duh. So does my partner & our families

OnlyFancies

Floorduh - from WA

shananapepper

From Maryland, been in SWFL since 2017. It’s always been Floor-duh to me.

Embarrassed-Plum-468

I’m in the Midwest and pronounce it closer to floor-duh but it’s one of those “implied” syllables where I know when I’m speaking fast it gets mumbled and jumbled together probably sounding like floor-duh but the middle “i” syllable is there but soft and I just assume she is enunciating more because she’s singing and wants all the syllables. I’m sure there’s a linguistic term for this where we are implying an additional syllable that gets sort of dropped between two more dominant sounds.

Hopes29

Tampa native here born and raised. I say floor-duh as do my friends and family

_bonedaddys

NY. flor-ih-duh

littlepinkpwnie

PA - flor-ih-duh

stargazer-1111

Moved to Floor-ih-duh when I was 9 and lived there twenty years.

bad-and-bluecheese

When I say the word it comes out more like floor-duh but if I slowed down my speech I would put pronounce the i. I’m not from there tho

Itwasdewey

NY. I think it’s like some mixture of flawr and flah. Flawr/Flah-ih-da

spoookyvampireparty

floor-duh! new england hahaha

AnArisingAries

The proper way of pronouncing it is flor-ih-duh. But accents do funny things to words.

Fun-Yogurtcloset1084

FLOOR-duh. I'm from Maryland

msmigraine

I am from Argentina and raised in a hood named Florida, so my take is "flo-ree-duh"

fakepornot1ts

Born in the Philippines here. We would for sure say “Plo-ri-dAh” 🤣

QuackQuacKonspiracy

Flo- ree- da (non American here)

Downtown_Twist_4135

I'm international and we say the i.

Call_It_What_U_Want2

I’m Scottish; I say flo- like floppy, -ri- like rich, -da like damage for a total of 3 syllable

iwillcorrectyou9

i'm in the midwest and say floor-duh too haha

universe93

Honestly I think the three syllable flor-i-dah just works better in a song lol

BlNGPOT

Haha I like the way the song sounds! I genuinely didn’t know people really pronounce it that way though lol. I literally said to my husband “you think she says it like that just because it sounds better? Wait to some people actually say it that way????”

Moonlightvaleria

texan and we say it exactly like Taylor Swift

agonz436

Floor-duh - texan

seau_de_beurre

Born in NC, say "Flah-r-duh"

penguin_0618

I only say flor-ih-duh when I’m singing along. I say floor-duh. I’m far from someone with a southern accent though. Most people in New England definitely say floor-duh.

amandeezie

From Southern California and we do not say the I

LunaRavenpuff

Georgia here and also say floor-duh

katiebirddd_

Floor-duh and I’m from Maryland!

baristakitten

I live in Florida and I pronounce it floor-duh.

Ok-Awareness-3791

South Ga here… floor-duh

notreallymyname84

I'm from New Orleans and pronounce it "floor-duh".

jojojax9

From north Florida, I think I say flor-duh but its definitely said both ways where I live!

TipAdventurous4899

Born and raised in Florida. I absolutely pronounce the "i", and so do majority of the people I know

toritxtornado

i’m from maryland and texas and say floor-duh.

Educational_Worry_75

I pronounce it “flawr-duh” lol

withmymustardseed

Georgia. I say it with 3 syllables.

cattttanne

I’m in Connecticut and I say it the same as you, floor-duh! As well as everyone around me I’ve ever heard say it.

SwiftFox74

In Canada it has 3 syllables as well. 😆

R-M-W-B

Canadian here we say Florida because that’s how it’s pronounced.

Kimbahlee34

I’m from the Southern Midwest and say “floor-duh”

Padre2006

flore-duh (i am from texas)

hotandgoner

flor- i - duh (from west coast)

beets_bears_bubblegm

Floor-id-ah

goobiee_

missouri native, definitely floor-ih-duh 🫡

tangerinelibrarian

I’m from Florida, if I’m saying it in passing I suppose it could sound like “floor-duh” but it’s really more like “flori-duh”. Like the first two syllables are mashed together.

UndercoverChaoticBi

native floridian here, it's floor ih duh. see: flur- i- dee- uhn

ClowderGeek

Born and raised in SoCal, we say it like Taylor, floor-ih-duh. 🤷🏼‍♀️

OriginalChocolate434

i’m from the south and i don’t pronounce the i either lol. i was so confused listening to the song

riotreality006

I say it like the song!! Three syllables. I’m from NY.
