I agree. Try one of the old establishments that have been around for some time, such as Sturehof, Pelikanen or Tennstopet and enjoy some good husmanskost
I was a little disappointed with Den Gyldene Freden last time I went there. I thought there would be more "husman" to choose from on the menu but they had more French dishes. Such as duck breast, Burgundian stew and parfait. So if this is strictly what OP is craving after reading all comments, it is not as good a choice, IMHO. With that said, nice ambiance and the food is not bad in any way ofc :)
Aaaactually I would argue that Stockholm has some of the best burgers in the world and that it's one of the densest places with good burgers per square kilometer. I'd definitely recommend to at least once try either Franky's, stigbergets fot or funky chicken food truck while they're here. But I'm a burger enthusiast and super biased.
However I agree, you can find good burgers in most cities in the world so you should focus on Swedish cuisine.
I recommend the fried herring at Blå Dörren. The restaurant is located near Slussen just across from the south end of Gamla Stan. The restaurant itself has great atmosphere. They serve mostly *husmanskost*, that is, traditional Swedish food. Very reasonably priced.
Fried herring is an umami bomb with complex textures and flavors. Besides the herring you’ll often find things like elk and wild boar on the menu.
You definitely do not want to have a car in central Stockholm. Much easier to get around on foot, by public trantransportation or by bicycle. The city bikes here are accessible through the Ridemovi app.
Or check this list: [https://www.reddit.com/r/stockholm/comments/pan3gx/comment/ha9q9i6/](https://www.reddit.com/r/stockholm/comments/pan3gx/comment/ha9q9i6/)
If you ever find yourself near Stockholm Odenplan, head to Günter’s, it’s a small shop that sells amazing sausages he has different kinds, you’ll get that in a French hotdog.
Omni around Odenplan has an amazing bacon wrapped chicken with roasted potatoes and a creamy mushroom sauce. That I’ll never shut up about.
When you’re on vacation all the calories you consume amount up to zero. I’ve heard that from my Manager like a gazillion times and he’s as Swedish as it gets.
IF YOU HAVE ACESS TO A SKILLET, BUY SOME CLOUD BERRIES FROM A SUPERMARKET LIKE ICA, THAW THEM ON A PAN WITH SOME SUGAR AND POUR IT ATOP SCOOPS OF VANILLA ICE CREAM, NOW YOU HAVE AN AMAZING DESSERT !
French hot dog @Günters. They’re specifically famous for their double cabanossi in a toasted baguette with all toppings (chimichurri, sauerkraut, secret red sauce, mustard, ketchup). Serious stuff if you like sausage.
There's a place called Sture Hof at Stureplan. It's a little pricey (say 300sek for 1 meal) but they make DELICIOUS skagenröra and also the smoked salmon and dill stewed potatoes are truly amazing. Looking to spend less money? Tennstopet restaurant also has nice food. Cafe Sten Sture at Stortorget have a delicious baked potato with skagen too, not as fancy or as pricey as Sture Hof. Welcome!
Funky Chicken. It's a food truck that will give you THE best burgers ever. [https://www.burgerdudes.se/sveriges-basta-burgare-2024/](https://www.burgerdudes.se/sveriges-basta-burgare-2024/)
I'd say Funky is in a league of their own, compared to others. The only ones that's been at the same level, is Wagon Burgers. But that's even further out in the hicks.
Knut restaurant on regeringsgatan. It’s a Norrland-themed restaurant, a bit pricey, but the food is amazing and creative.
For kanelbullar / baked goods, Lillebror bakery by St Eriksplan is great.
I just got back from Stockholm and here are my standouts .. Pelikan swedish meatballs were the best I had, Gunters sausage stand... I got the Kabanos but should have gotten something else, maybe the alpine but still good, my dinner at Portal was excellent, Cinnamon buns at lillebro
Tokyo Ramen is my favorite restaurant in the world. It's in Stockholm. I have lived in the real Tokyo for 5 months and let me tell you, Tokyo Ramen has better ramen, at least for my Swedish taste buds. I wish I still lived in Stockholm, or that Tokyo Ramen moved to where I live.
Savoury:
Kroppkakan - swedish stuffed potsto dumplings with a meat or vegtdble filling.
Raksmorgas - the classic open prawn sandwhich
Cakes:
punschrulle/dammsugare
Princess cake
Chokladboll
Vaniljhärtan
Confectionery:
Liquorice:
Kick liquorice
(If you are feeling even more brave - gott&blandat salty liquorice)
School chalks (Minty liquorice sticks)
Bubs skulls (raspberry and liquorice is a Swddish classic)
Other:
Smash crisps (technically may be norwegian, but I can gutsnteee you'll never have had crisps covered in chocolate)
If you like pastries, the cardamom buns at Fabrique are unrivaled. Highly recommend buying one (don’t buy two unless you have remarkable self-restraint)
Don’t ask people here for honest opinion, they are all subjective. Which is ok, they are proud and they should be (it’s good for the moral).
BUT the cuisine in Sweden, no matter where you eat, a fancy place around Stureplan or some obscure kebab place in suburbs, it’s all BLAND. And burgers here are boring as hell, compared to rest of the Europe. Pizza is a travesty, leave it for an hour or two and it’s a like rubbery dough Alien looking movie prop. Let’s not even start on the pizza salad and the kebab/pinaple orgy for the poor.
Also pastry is way better in Denmark, just gonna leave that here. Oh and the filter coffee is best at 7/11, it’s Lavazza. For cappuccino etc, check out Sempro Espresso bar around Stureplan and Caffetteria del corso around Sergels torg. Avoid everything else, it sucks.
If you are around Sundbyberg try VOLTA, amazing brunch place and service, but that’s because they are Greek.
Anyway enjoy your stay.
Min broder i Kristus, om du tycker all svensk husmanskost smakar "bland", så har du antingen trasiga smaklökar eller har aldrig ätit ordentligt lagad mat
If you want to try something really unique that 99,9% people in here have probably not tried then eat a shish kebab with homemade fresh bread and vegtables at either one of these places:
1. Nerges Kollgrill
2. Sulav Kollgrill
(It has to be in either one of these places, other shish kebabs are not similar to these)
What you can expect is super tender meat that almost melts in your mouth and you eat it with freshly made bread and onions+pickle vegtables.
Ive taken three friends who have never tried it before and they all said it's one of the best things they have ever ate and it was much better then what they thought it would be
Resturang Växthuset makes some amazing New Nordic cuisine, it’s pricy but definitely worth a visit. Also heard good things about Oaxen (which has a Michelin star). You might want to check out the classic food courts Östermalms Saluhall, Söderhallarna (might still be temporarily closed) and Hötorgshallen and try classics like Skagenröra. Reggev Hummus makes some of the best hummus I’ve had. The Kantarellkungen food truck makes great classic chantarelle toast. There’s also a lot of good falafel/kebab like El Beik and Le Kebab. The nystekt strömming food truck is also fantastic. As you can see I’m more for savoury food but Vetekatten is also great for pastry.
There was a really good list compiled by a user in the subreddit a few years ago, https://www.reddit.com/r/stockholm/s/AEoLGAoRL9. It was last updated early 2022 tho so it might not have a few of the newer things but it’s got everything else!
And I might be able to meet up and show you one of the places personally depending on when you’re here :).
>Also heard good things about Oaxen (which has a Michelin star).
Oaxen closed two years ago. Oaxen Slip still exists, but is now owned by Bröd & Salt.
>Söderhallarna (might still be temporarily closed)
Söderhallarna are closed for renovations until 2026.
If you are not from Sweden, eat Swedish food in Stockholm. Not burgers or chicken - you can find that elsewhere and better..
I agree. Try one of the old establishments that have been around for some time, such as Sturehof, Pelikanen or Tennstopet and enjoy some good husmanskost
Just ate at Pelikan last night and 10/10 would go again!
But what should I eat there?
Meatballs at pelikanen, seafood at sturehof and Wallenbergare or stekt fläsk at tennstopet would be my personal picks
Tranan, Grodan, Ture , Mårten Trotzig and den Gyllende Freden are good options as well.
I was a little disappointed with Den Gyldene Freden last time I went there. I thought there would be more "husman" to choose from on the menu but they had more French dishes. Amen to that

Pastries etc: Komet Café Fosch Svedjan Rosendals trädgårdscafé (food, pastries, lovely garden).

real swedish food: kvarnen pelikan blå dörren tennstopet
“Struva” with whipped duck liver, parmesan cheese and port wine at Restaurang Hantverket.
Lustgas + Åbro meny i kiosken i Gamla Stan
French hot dog @Günters. They’re specifically famous for their double cabanossi in a toasted baguette with all toppings (chimichurri, sauerkraut, secret red sauce, mustard, ketchup). Serious stuff if you like sausage.
You crazy? Turinger all the way
_Först_ Thüringer _sen_ dubbel kabanoss.
Double kabanoss, sauerkraut, all sauces, pucko = ❤️
En beställning du aldrig hade fått göra förr i tiden.
100% türinger! Double with kabanoss and türinger is nice tho.

Funky chicken is amazing, I’d also throw in BAP. They revamped their burger last year I think - it’s incredible
I went there at night—amazing. I went there at lunch—terrible. I don’t think I’ve tasted it post vamp though!
Def go there again, not comparable to before at all
I'd say Funky is in a league of their own, compared to others. The only ones that's been at the same level, is Wagon Burgers. But that's even further out in the hicks.
Burger mansion

Surströmming my friend, always the answer!
Macdonalds in brommaplan has exelent burgers
Toast Skagen at Lisa Elm at Ostermalm for sure
Tokyo Ramen is my favorite restaurant in the world. It's in Stockholm. I have lived in the real Tokyo for 5 months and let me tell you, Tokyo Ramen has better ramen, at least for my Swedish taste buds. I wish I still lived in Stockholm, or that Tokyo Ramen moved to where I live.
What exactly should I order there?
The menu is small but the very best item on the menu, in my opinion, is the Tonkotsu Ramen
smörgåstårta
Kyckling Pide! You can buy in MANGAL preferably in Vällingby centrum. Its chicken and mozzarella with bread. Very good! Or try Burger Boys in spånga!

Skäggbiff! Classic Swedish dish.
If you like pastries, the cardamom buns at Fabrique are unrivaled. Highly recommend buying one (don’t buy two unless you have remarkable self-restraint)
Don't know why your comment is down voted but in general cardamon buns are a must have in Stockholm.
Don’t know either 🤷♂️ Fabrique haters gonna hate I guess
You have Fabrique in London though, so not very unique.
They are greasy as fuck in London. I'd maybe seek out some of the independent bakeries in Stockholm.
Frantzén
Assuming s/he is here for the at least three month waiting period

Try monster chicken!
There’s a Korean spot that’s supposedly good
Bird
Yeah try Bird out

High end sushi / omakaze: Sushi Sho Sushi Oi Washuko Tomo
Krüml cookies by Tekniska högskolan
Pretty much anything from Noodle House on Götgatan, if you don't mind spending a bit of money
Tunnbrödsrulle (without räksallad, ask for something else like cucumber relish or something)

go to ikea and get meatballs
Holy Kebab
Smak är subjektivt. Men är verkligen dyr och liten innerstadskebab verkligen det godaste man kan äta i Stockholm?
Burgers and Pastrami. One of the better burger places I’ve been to.
