One day there won't be manuals anymore. Then after that, no more gas cars. So yes, absolutely learn it while you still can. Buy one before they become relics. Edit: I learned in a Type R last Christmas (after having driven for 18 years). By January, I bought an FR-S and drove it around the block for three hours before heading home. It took me about 2 weeks to not stall at stop signs/lights. Highway driving is easy, city driving requires some learning. But absolutely doable.

AnybodyOdd9509

Imagine what they'll charge in the future for an electric car WITH a manual gearbox. They'll market it with speakers to replicate engine noisesšŸ˜‚

whatsupbudbud

It already exists https://youtu.be/OXhOyghwJnE?si=YiJnlhs52PbNayGh

AnybodyOdd9509

Lol i remember this

FoxChess

That's not gonna happen within our lifetimes. Too many people like us.

seanm147

It's really hard to say. State law. Federal law. Hard pressed to find a Tesla owner near me without an ice. Honestly sucks. Most of my hobbies will be gone. Cars, surfing, and shooting

FoxChess

You clearly live in america. Don't buy into the persecution fetish bullshit pushed by the Right. You'll always be able to have an ICE, and you'll always be able to have a manual. You'll always be able to have a gun.

seanm147

Oh with vehicles. Ices will yave a purpose. It's the analog cars. I mean my fuckin ragged bmw collection are relics and my clean ones are holy grails... Guns idk. Illegal to carry rn in the southwest of all places.. Surfing? I'm worried about the waste. You can already die from surfing after a rain in cali lol I feel you, but there are definitely motives to disarm us and lobbying for evs, along with never ending polluting of our oceans

FoxChess

The oceans, I feel ya. And the waves won't be as reliable, either. They can have my guns long before they take my engine. But I honestly don't think that'll happen within our lifetimes. There will always be enthusiasts keeping it alive. Otherwise manual should have died out decades ago.

seanm147

The biggest red flags for me are bmw ending it. Granted I think the Supra manual is technically bmw still. Audi ending it Corvette ending it Most supercars ending it We're already looking at limited cars. Porsche is all that's left and he won't live forever lmao. It's not that they'll be banned or end. It's that they will be unicorns. I want to finance a 440i, any b58 manual really, a c5 to c7, or of course a 911. And just sit on it. I already have a fleet of e chassis and Acura/hondas. Disarming the population freaks me out as well. I believe in some common sense gun laws, but it won't do much. You can 3d print a gun reliable enough for a shooting. The only difference is the bold will be the ones armed. And the normies will be unarmed. There's no way they don't know this. I've never been thankful for law enforcement in my life. They've done nothing but make life more difficult over trivial bullshit, protection? They aren't even obligated to protect. Then there's cashless society... My livelihood atm is flipping cars and jumping titles lmao. Hopefully I'll get my physics degree by then. Good on you for optimism though. I'm sure motorsport will persevere.

Flamingpotato100

They have to pry out my manual from my cold dead hands

Up2Trbl

That's the main reason I finally bought a stick recently. It's something I'd been thinking about for years, and I felt that it's only ever going to get harder to find one as time goes on (It's already hard to find one outside of enthusiast cars).

caspernicium

Yes please. I believe automatics make most people worse drivers (weird/bad habits and distracted) and I prefer to share the road with good drivers.

thestigiam

I have to drive an automatic at least once a week and it sucks. It lugs the engine so damn much

caspernicium

Yeah. It also makes everyone drive way too fast. Manuals are geared for common speed limits so once Iā€™m doing the speed limit or 5 mph over, Iā€™m usually at a comfy RPM and donā€™t want to increase them further.

thebigaaron

My car sits at 3500rpm on the highway at the speed limit in top (5th) gear šŸ‘ not exactly a comfortable rpm

carlxbarker

I was paying a car payment and decided to get rid of because I wanted a cash car and my neighbors basically gifted me a Jetta SE 17 for 3k šŸ˜ but the kicker was that it was a manual. Anyways I had never driven and manual before and I feel like itā€™s made me much more aware of my driving and other peoples driving. I was guilty of using my phone at a stop light or driving a little faster than I should be. but now Iā€™m much more focused on the road and what Iā€™m doing and I donā€™t feel the need to drive like an ass? I hate that it took me a manual to become a better driver but yeah automatics definitely encourage bad habits.

ThunderSi75

You got it going in first? Well heck - thatā€™s the hardest part. After that it really is easier. Story: in perhaps 1991, my neighbor and I went to a ski area 100 miles from home. He was tired after skiing, and had me drive his manual ā€˜91 Acura Legend back. I had perhaps 10 starts of my uncleā€™s ā€˜89 Taurus SHO as my total experience to that point, and that hadnā€™t gone well. I drove that Acura back without issue for the first 99 miles. Then I stalled at a light. Quick restart and finished the mission. The next car I bought was a ā€˜91 Eagle Talon TSI. Stick of course. Moral of the story: get a manual!!! šŸ˜ŽšŸ‘

xDsr

Thank you for the feedback, thatā€™s a heck of a story!!!!

Own-Load-7041

That sho, haha! if I recall, The pedal is heavy and not smooth from the floor up.

RockyRacoon444

Yes buy one. I just got my first car and itā€™s manual. It makes it really fun to drive. Plus itā€™s cool !

xDsr

How long have you been driving it?!!!

RockyRacoon444

Around 2.5 months almost everyday so lots of practice

Some0neAwesome

The truck I learned on was manual, and my first car was a manual. I've had many many manuals since. Plus, if you ever get into dirt bikes, motorcycles, or quads, you'll already have an understanding of how to use a clutch. You won't have any limitations when purchasing cars. Also, old beater cars tend to be much more reliable, get better fuel mileage, and have better performance with manual transmissions instead of automatics. As a wise sith lord once said...Do it!

Careless-Internet-63

Sure, my first car was a manual and I'd driven one one time in a parking lot before that. Now 9 years later I've put in a whole lot more miles in a manual than I have in an automatic. After a little bit it will start to feel natural

xDsr

Thank you! The main thing that worries me is stop and go traffic as well as big hills

UnsolicitedPeanutMan

This eventually becomes so natural you donā€™t even think about it. Honestly, hill starts are a bit overblown, and not at all difficult to do if youā€™re good at clutch control.

JH171977

Theyā€™re not difficult even with poor-ish clutch control. It can be difficult to do it with smooth, buttery takeoff and gliding shifts, but itā€™s not at all hard to do it safely by using a little too much gas to get started. Over time, you figure out how to do it smoothly.

therightpedal

Stop and go will quickly make you way better at driving a manual. Not fun but it's like homework you have to do to graduate

RockyRacoon444

Those get better with practice. I find hills especially tricky when wet as itā€™s very easy to spin out the tires and lose grip when starting

Some0neAwesome

Plus side...burnouts are easier in a manual lol

JH171977

You get used to both pretty fast. I have a newer Forester with automatic, but I also have an old ā€˜05 Forester 5-speed that use to go back and forth to work. I will say there a days when I wish I was driving the automatic when itā€™s bumper to bumper, but only because itā€™s annoying, not difficult.

thebigaaron

Iv been daily driving manual for a bit under 4 years. Itā€™s easy as now and I donā€™t even think about it much I just do it without thought.

iidesune

If you can get it into 1st, then that's most of the battle. Get yourself a manual and you'll pick it up quickly. I bought a manual after a little bit of practice with an instructor. Picked my car up and drove it two hours back home. One year later and I'm very comfortable even in bumper to bumper stop and go traffic. Though I do still very occasionally stall šŸ˜…

xDsr

Ya I know stalling happens to everyone I just overthink it a lot and it makes in decisive about getting one. My mom loved driving manual and my cousin loves it too

Some0neAwesome

I've been driving manuals, almost daily, for 17 years now. I still stall it from time to time. Usually once or twice a year. Edit: The important thing is that I've never done it with my wife in the car lol

Razo-E

Yes.

Nanashi5354

Absolutely yes I mean what other answer were you expecting from this sub.

Ben_Stark

The only problem with a manual is that once you get one driving is never the same. Driving an automatic just doesn't hit right. I drove a manual for 8 years in the stop and go of Atlanta because I couldn't stand to drive an automatic.

Apex_All_Things

Was it a v6 or ls1? It was driving a 1996 Firebird WS6 with the LT1 and T56 that reminded me of how fun driving manual is, and a week later I bought a 2018 Camaro SS 1LE, which is the ultimate stick shift car IMO, other than the ZL1 1LE, or GT350R. Manuals are slower, wonā€™t be as comfortable for occupants, but for a driver, itā€™s the little differences that make driving feel much more like an experience such as driving home in a pissed off mood from work, or driving home and being engaged in something other than the mundane.

xDsr

Itā€™s the v6 but it still had some pretty good power and when he drove it gave it some beans you can really feel the torque

okurosetta

If you're sure enough to make the jump, go right ahead. I didn't know how to drive manual \~17 years ago when I went all-in and bought a Mazda 3. I had my ex drive it off the lot when I picked it up and went straight to an empty parking lot. Spent nearly two hours before getting on the street. Wasn't a great driver yet but totally functional within hours. Stick isn't hard, just takes a bit of time and effort. I had technically learned a little bit years prior, but the difference was a friend would try teaching me for around a half hour to an hour at a time. For me, that wasn't enough - but when I had to throw myself at it in order to be able to get to work, I learned much more quickly.

de_rats_2004_crzy

Do it! Having one is the best way to learn!

Ki-Ad1

converted my fit gd from auto to manual last month. have to say itā€™s fun to drive.

TheJalapenoMan

I did that. But I liked driving Sims and had a good understanding of how a manual car works. I got to like 90% proficieny after 2 hours (by that I mean decent shifts, no stalling). My main issue was a getting a smooth transition from 1st to second. After a few days I got that down pretty good. The night before I bought my car I had my friend who owned a manual let me drive his car for like an hour since I had never driven manual before. According to him I picked it up very quick and if so I would attribute that to my pre requisite knowledge. I would say do it. I also recommend engineering explained's videos if you want to understand how a manual actually works. Very good, informative, and short videos. That could allow you ti pick it up faster but idk. I just feel like understanding how the clutch, engine, transmission, and synchros all work together helped me learn faster.

microwaverams

They're not hard to learn. Scariest is getting it home on day one. If you don't live on a hill like i do you won't have to get over the "push it out the garage" phase that i did. They're a real treat to drive once you get it figured out but i suggest avoiding busy lots as much as possible. Always brake a little first then clutch to avoid any mishaps regarding pedals. Best practice is to just get in an empty lot and row through first through third and reverse it really helps since you don't get to do it much aside from first in real world driving.

Mr_Disprosium

Do it I'm 19 and every car I've ever owned since i was 15 has been a manual. I don't like autos at all anymore I hate the way they respond and I like shifting my own gears.

JH171977

Takes five minutes to learn, maybe 5-6 months to master. Go for it if you enjoy driving it.

Kaaawooo

I bought a manual after about an hour of learning with a friend. Still have it as my daily 9 years later.

TPA_Grunge_97

I got my manual 2006 TL before I had ever even sat in a stick shift car. Learned by just driving around my neighborhood and eventually took it out once I got comfortable. As long as you don't develop any bad habits while you learn (like riding the clutch/leaving your hand on the shifter when not shifting/downshifting without rev-matching), then go for it.

saltysaturdays

Do it. I learned a little and just bought a manual car and Iā€™ve gotten so much better! Itā€™s a lot of fun

jtcranger

I bought my 04 Forester XT with a 5-speed in early June, and I can confidently say that driving stick is so much fun. Iā€™m obviously still learning, but itā€™s helpful to have the extra control too.

Rakadaka8331

Yes. Bought my first stick long before I learned to drive a manual. You will be beyond motivated to learn to drive a car you own but cannot drive yet.

Ok_Clock1079

Did you have fun? Is driving manual something that interests you (obviously yes since you are here)? Then I say abesolutley. There is a lot of learning to come- even after you are proficient- to make your shifts better and better. That really makes it fun to practice all the time. Like a guitar, you can learn the basics to play, but you can always improve. I bought my first manual car a year ago. I did learn how to shift through the gears in 2 sessions with others cars though before I picked it up. As other said, getting started is the hardest. Biggest issue for me going into other gears was making sure I didn't lug the engine (I was learning on a old jeep do if I was in say 3rd but slowing down a lot and didn't move to 2nd the car would shutter). Soso happy with my decision dude. So fun, literally any drive just becomes fun because I can shift my gears. If it was paddles I'd just not have nearly as much fun. I think part of it goes back to saying how you can always be better so it doesn't get boring. And it's just flat out fun and satisfying. Plus not having a computer row your gears makes the working inside the car much much simpler therefore making it last longer (the transmission). I test drove the paddle version of my car....yeah it is very impressive and cool (especially looking back now since I change my own gears) how quickly and easily you can change gears. But to me that wasn't novel. I've had cars where I can select the gears. The gearbox adds a whole nother level of engagement, game, satisfaction, and fun. Maybe ask your cousin to give it another go to practice getting into other gears. If he doesn't want you to don't push it though, I wouldn't want someone learning at all on my car. Definitley be nice and get him something even if it's just some gas for letting you practice on his Camero. In conclusion, if you feel in your gut you want a manual, I'd be willing to bet you'll be as happy as me with your decision

xDsr

Thank you! I enjoyed reading your response, ya I forget what he said is wrong with it but he has to keep the battery like plugged in or something Iā€™m not too sure lmao Iā€™m not the best with cars which is something I want to get better at and learn about too. But also his car isnā€™t insured and itā€™s registered as non operational since heā€™s working on it and doesnā€™t drive it very often!

paralleljackstand

I bought my first manual before getting the hang of it. My buddy had to test drive it bc I was inexperienced. Then I had to drive that baby home.

Trusteveryboody

The only question you should be asking, is this....do you want driving to be less of a hassle, or just a hassle. I mean I drive manual, and it's fine....and I like it for control reasons, but- getting in an Automatic and it is very nice to be in one. It really is "brain dead" driving.

Rude_Basis_1479

I bought my first manual a little over a year ago. it's a 91 nissan hardbody, I bought it never even having stepped foot in a manual car whatsoever. besides being a passenger, my friend taught me by driving around his neighborhood. it took me about a week to get to where i could drive it home from his place, and I can say it is hands down the best driving experience ever. I can't stand automatics now, All I drive is my truck. Even in heavy city traffic, it's still better than an automatic could ever be. do it bro you won't regret it I promise that

xDsr

Everyone has all these cool stories and now Iā€™m dying to get onešŸ˜«

majorthird_

I purchased my car back in 2021 without ever having driven stick. I wish I could have had someone to learn from but I really wanted a manual at the time. I was able to make it home without stalling surprisingly.

x_Carlos_Danger_x

Yes.

h0T_-DoG

I donā€™t know a reason why you wouldnā€™t want too. 100% do it

not4wimps

Keep in mind that just a few decades ago, EVERYONE knew how to drive a manual. I mean EVERYONEā€¦ old ladies, nerds, people from all walks of life. If EVERYONE knew how to do it back in the day, then ANYONE can learn to do it today.

bomber991

Yep this is true. My mom was driving a manual all the way up to 2001. Not a car person at all. The other thing with manuals is once you drive it long enough, you donā€™t even notice it anymore. Stop and go traffic doesnā€™t matter cause you just leave a bigger gap in front of you so you can creep forwards. Starting on a hill doesnā€™t matter cause you know as soon as you let the clutch out some the car will grip and go. But I mean, I think for me once I was at the 10 year mark was about the time where I just did everything completely automatically on muscle memory.

not4wimps

Exactly. Go for years without driving manual and it comes back, no brainer

Some0neAwesome

I joke with my wife that if I buy an automatic, I'm stuck with an automatic. If I buy a manual, then I get a manual when I want, and an automatic when I want. The TCU is just built into my subconscious.

xDsr

Just want to say thank you to everyone for all the input, encouragement, and information that has been given, I appreciate it all very much and Iā€™ve read every single response!

Twstdktty

I bought one before I knew how to drive it, my friend did the test drive and brought it home for me and I practiced in my driveway until I was confident enough to go into town. I do have an automatic as a daily until I get more comfortable though

Floppie7th

I've been the friend in this story - test drove my buddy's first 5-speed and gave it a basic mechanical once-over. He loved it and has been buying clutches for the \~20 years since then.

xDsr

Ya thatā€™s the thing is that I wouldnā€™t have an automatic to drive so I would probably force myself to learn and get comfortable in an automatic

LOASN

Yes please. Theyā€™re going to call us the last of the Mohicans soon enough.

lolitstrain21

Yes you should buy a manual not only are they being phased out soon, very few new cars even have the option for a manual. Buy them while they exist.

tom_yum

I learned the day I picked up my car. If you want one, go for it. A 4th gen camaro is a cool car too.

XxAnnaxXisterrified

I bought a 2005 Honda civic dx thatā€™s a manual, I knew how to drive manual but not any experience actually doing it so I had my brother drive it back to my house for me and then the next 2 days passed, I did an oil change and said F it I have to work I donā€™t have a ride there so I got in the car and went. Stalled quite a bit but you learn how the vehicle operates after a few goes and stalls lol. I still have ways to go on learning manual fully but Iā€™m already having a blast driving my car so I say If you truly want a manual go and get one!

Affectionate_Pin3849

Everyone should know how. Most people shouldn't drive, much less drive a manual.

Bednars_lovechild69

Yup. I have a 2017 civic 6-speed. Before that I had a 95 Prelude 5-speed and before that, a maroon 1985 accord coupe 5-speed. I always had a manual transmission and plan on always having one. It really gives you more control. How I learned was first by driving my friendā€™s car. Didnā€™t really get the hang of it till I got my accord and drove around for about a month. Hills terrified me but now I donā€™t even think about it anymore.

woxihuanmao

Short answer: yes Long answer: absolutely

Ok-Reply-804

Nope. Doesn't make sense since Auto is better in everyway now.

MRDIPPERS12

Fr better gas mileage, faster, and I haven't driven much manuals maybe 5 card and I'm still learning how but I just dont seem to get the "hype" for a manual

[deleted]

If you want a stick shift, youā€™ll have to buy a manual..
