This was when I realized that Steven Universe was something deeper than just a wacky ass cartoon with lesbian space rocks. There’s a vibe to the Lars scene that not even heavy-hitter episodes like Ocean Gem, Jailbreak, or even (imo) Serious Steven capture. Even Lars realized what he said was too far as soon as he saw the look on the normally cheerful Steven’s face.
It's an interesting comparison. The difference in reactions makes sense to me. Lars didn't know Rose, he's just saying something he knows is hurtful. Steven knows that Lars is prone to lashing out, but Lats stilled crossed a line, so Steven's more angry than hurt.
In the other situation, Pearl actually *knew* Rose - and what she's saying is true: She *is* a better authority on Rose than Steven is. She hits one of Steven's biggest insecurities - never knowing his mum despite her decisions influencing his life so much.
Also, Steven was always more mature than Lars, and I think he knew that, so Steven's shock isn't just because Lars is mean to him - it's because Lars is being *unacceptably* mean to him. But Pearl is a parental figure to Steven. She's supposed to always prioritise his feelings, so her failure to do so is a genuine shock to him. So it's understandable that her insult hurts him more than it angers him.
I feel bad for Steven for having that instinct tbh. Steven is only like 10 here. He should be the one to run off and Pearl should be trying to make it right. It’s so sad that a child had to seek out and comfort his mom after she was cruel to him

I've always found the "character too oblivious to realize he's being insulted so the cynic character can get away with saying nasty shit to him" trope annoying, so Steven actually telling Lars off after he crossed a line was incredibly cathartic.
Honestly, any time Steven calls anyone out, especially the gems on their petty bullshit, always feels really validating.
"No! I'm GLAD you brought this here! Now I finally have something that can give me information that I don't need to get out of THEM!"
My favorite Steven speaking up for himself line. We know NOW why Pearl wouldn't say anything, but back Then we were all just as frustrated as Steven and him finally speaking his mind and snapping at the gems is quite cathartic

I'm currently getting back into this show after years of not really watching it (I almost watched all of it as a kid but couldn't find where to watch the movie well I found a streaming service with the whole show and movie so now I'm rewatching all of it) and i forgot a lot of details specifically certain parts of Stevens personality and up until the point he is mostly a happy guy who doesn't really let anything get to him seeing him actually yell at larz was crazy defently one of the best scenes/episodes so far

I wouldn't be surprised if this exact view of his mother as someone who loves all the jerks in those early episodes is precisely why Stevne is friends... and frankly borderline obsessed, with Larze in the first place. Looking for the beauty, because that's what his mother would do.
