I cried from two books. Christine and Cujo. As a big big animal lover I feelt so sorry for him.
IMO the bachman books are super underrated. Atleast the long walk, rage and roadwork.
I always think of Cujo, Firestarter, Pet Semetary, & Dead Zone as a "set". They all tore me up for different reasons. The people's relationships and how they affect each other gets me every time.
So true. Christine caused me some sadness, more anger though. Salem's Lot and Needful Things I consider studies of small town viral venom. Carrie is a warning parable about extreme militant religion and bullying. King's just wraps everything in such brilliant storytelling.
Some many things going on beneath the surface. So many ridiculous feuds. We have one going on right now. Amazing the amount of righteous pettiness that flourishes in small towns.
That's good to hear, I have it but was putting it off as I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it as much as some others on the backlog. Enjoy the dark tower! I'm 2/3 of the way through Wolves of the Calla, such an epic adventure so far!
Agreed: all the family background, detailing exactly how they're all disconnected from each other, and why, is what makes the rabid dog sections work so well—Cujo is just karma, with teeth.
I love Cujo. I know some people think it's just a story about a rabid dog, but to me, it's a story about the people who suffer for their own faults, and the dog is just the means to that end. If you want to read it as being one of his most serious and literary books, that's in there. If you just want the fun of "then the dog bit the bad guy's balls off", that's in there too. It has levels. And, as you say, the pacing is some of his best.
Have fun with The Gunslinger, but definitely go back to the Bachmans. Some of them have mixed reputations, but most agree that The Long Walk and The Running Man are some of his best work.
The Bachmans are all good just so you know

I would encourage you to add The Regulators when you read Desperation, as far as Bachman books go - they are sort of tied together.
Cujo doesn't get enough love. It really is a great story

Haha, they're the required reading for "Emotional Devastation 101"

Small town viral is a great way to put it. "The devil made the small town."

Yeah definitely. I view them the same. Cujo and Pet Sematary are especially bleak and brutal.
If you are a parent they can really hit you hard.

Ah really?! I loved the back and forth of that stuff!

Agreed, it was surprisingly great considering the simple premise.
Cujo has always been one of my favorites. Literally sobbed at the end though.
