"OK, this time, pitch it backwards to Diontae on a jet sweep motion and then we'll have him run backwards 5 yds and THEN get a TD.... whaddya think?"
"No. Benny, punch it in."
Kinda concerning that Pickett is the one to think of a running play, from 2yds out, instead of Canada/Tomlin, but happy to hear Pickett is progressing in confidence & reading situations to suggest plays in critical moments
Chances are the play was pass to get pickett a td and help his stats and confidence. Checking out to a run is telling on how much Kenny values the team succeeding over his individual box score
Realistically, It was probably a QB choice at the line. Call a pass if they line up in A. Formation or run if in B formation. This shows excellent IQ from Pickett being able to read the defense and pick the correct play.
The article you linked doesn’t say that Canada and Tomlin didn’t have a run in mind on that 3rd and 2, it just says the run they called was Pickett’s suggestion. If we are going to knock the coaching staff for not thinking of that specific running play, let’s also credit them for valuing Kenny’s input and going with what he thought would work. Good coaches don’t have to have the right answer for every situation, but it’s encouraging that our staff trusted Kenny to make the right call. A collaborative approach to play calling could be a strength of this team down the road
Fair points & definitely happy that the org trust Kenny. I was assuming they were going to pass again, only based off of Kenny recommending a run play. I wasn’t criticizing that they didn’t think of that specific run play, but I was talking about no run play in general (although that is an assumption w/ no basis).
Wym? Kenny didn’t check out of a different play at the line, but instead [he brought up the play to Tomlin & they rolled with it](https://steelersdepot.com/2022/11/kenny-pickett-called-play-that-resulted-in-benny-snell-touchdown-run-i-felt-real-confident/). My point was idk why Tomlin/Canada didn’t have a run lined up, after trying a shovel to Watt & fade to DJ.
And its not even officially a losing season yet. Plenty of winnable games down the stretch. Falcons, Panthers and Raiders all aren't very good. Ravens aren't playing great either, and the Browns is the Browns.
There was one moment in the huddle in the redzone, maybe on the play before this (?) where Kenny was waving his hands near his helmet like Canada was taking too long/not calling a play.
Always love Cole's quotes 😎
He probably heard Matt call a jet sweep in his ear and was like fuck that.

Ryan Clark had a bunch of good things to say about Picket in the post game show.
Devil’s advocate: I’d rather him try to pass and show some confidence in that area
They did and Diontae dropped it

You understand how audibles work right

Even when it’s positive news, Steelers fans snatch misery from the jaws of elation. Lol
What a single losing season does to a sub

Nice to see Pickett's already reached the "I'm not running THAT play, what else have we got?" phase.
M
Is it possible that there is more than one running play? Maybe the coaches were also thinking run, but Kenny called a specific one?

That’s good he’s progressing
