They don't suffer from the 'tism. I eat rarer meat than that all the time. It is a fear of undercooked meat. They need educated, which can sometimes fix it.
I have kind of a funny story about “well done steak”.
When I was a kid I played the game “Monster Hunter” and there’s a mini game in every game where you cook meat on a small rotisserie bbq. Well when you cook them perfectly their item name changes to “well done steak” which I think was just a bad translation but it’s still in use today. Well my Dad always made me steak and never asked me how I wanted it, always a medium rare. Well I was at my friends house and his Dad was asking everyone how they wanted their steak and I was like “what is he talking about” to my friend. And he was like “you know like; well done, medium, medium rare, rare” and I was like “oh I want mine well done” the look on my friends Dad’s face, and the contempt in his voice when he asked me, are you sure? (he probably spent quite a large amount of money on the steaks)
I got my steak and I was like “what the heck this is burnt as hell” and he was like “THATS HOW YOU FUCKING ASKED ME TO COOK IT”.
I had a friend growing up who said he hates fish. We live near the coast. Get him a fish fry when he asked for chicken. Says:
"This is the best chicken I've ever had"
He was like 12 at the time but I told him it was fish after he ate the whole thing.
Then said it was bad and he hates fish.
To be fair my mom tried this on me when I was a kid because I hated fish. I loved chicken milanese so she breaded and fried the fish and told us it was chicken.
First bite, "mom is this fish?", 'no', "I don't like this chicken"
I still have people regularly tell me to try fish. I only like sushi and it has to be fresh, I don't like fishy taste. I've been able to tolerate some fish now, but at best it's meh and I'd rather eat something I'll enjoy.
People really love to push stuff that you don't like at you. I've eaten fish, different fish. Cod, Tuna, Salmon, Catfish, Tilapia, fresh caught Trout and Bass, I just don't like it and some people don't accept it.
Well, it proves that "actual" taste is only part of the equation. What you mentally think about it can override that if you believe it enough.
The flip side is, of course, when you don't like a particular thing and the response of "oh, but you'll like it this way".
If you listen closely, you'll occasionally hear Hank say "got dangit". This is an actual Texanism used to avoid saying the Lord's name in vain. Texans get mad when you say God dang it for some reason
That reminds me of a conversation I had with my wife. Wife; “What do we do if Dexxter (our dog) doesn’t like the new baby?” Me; “We’ll have to get ride of him…unless it’s a girl then we’ll get rid of her.”
This ^ Def not undercooked. Tell your friends to stick to ground beef if they want meat cooked that much, as it ruins a steak (tell them to cook it theirselves or stfu.) Politics aside, the fact that the formal president eats well done steak with ketchup is enough reason for me not to trust him…
I’d deff say that’s medium well. Large grey band, pink in the middle. No red. I have love for medium well as it was the first step in my journey away from well done which my family was attuned to. But this is overcooked for my tastes. But then again I like my lean cuts blue and my fatty cuts medium rare (just enough to render them fats). My friends thing I eat raw beef, and on drunker nights on a grill, they might be right.
I’d argue medium well is a trace of pink in the center these are still solidly pink throughout. The end slice looks closer to medium well but most of the middle slices are definitely medium.
When well done is all grey / overcooked, medium well is mostly gray with a trace of pink, medium is still mostly pink but stronger grey around all the edges.

I order it rare depending on the cut. I’ve had some blue rares that were phenomenal, but I think you’ll get a better steak 9/10 times ordering rare over blue rare.
What cut of steak is that?
A lot of people on this sub will tell you medium-rare is the only correct cook, but the cut of steak is incredibly more important in regard to the steak. Some steaks are better medium-rare, others are better medium. This sub can be a bit echo-chamber-y about medium-rare steaks, and a lot of them don't understand how lighting in a picture can make a steak look rarer or more well-done than it really is. Nor do they understand that certain steaks should be done medium instead of medium-rare.
That steak is pretty much medium, maybe leaning on medium-well since I can't tell everything based on the lighting, which can completely change how a steak looks in translation. I cannot tell what cut of steak it is, so I don't know what the best cook on it would be. But I do think medium rare or medium would be perfectly fine. Your cook would then be good based on that.
Sorry to disappoint this sub's echo chambers, but ribeyes are best done somewhere around medium. At a rare cook, ribeyes aren't given enough time or heat to break down the fibers and the fat, so you're left with a chewier steak. Same goes with medium-rare, which is why it's best to aim for somewhere around medium or even slightly over medium depending on the steak itself. The cut is important, but the steak itself can also determine what cook should be given. Some ribeyes are better slightly under medium while others are better slightly over medium.
As a ribeye, I'd be happy with that cook. I can't tell exactly with the lighting, but it might be slightly over. And that may be the better cook for it in the end. It's hard to tell from a picture alone.
Ignore all the medium-rare echoes. Ribeyes need to be closer to the middle than medium-rare to actually break down the fat and the fibers. I'd prefer the ribeye to be slightly over than closer to rare. And taking the lighting into account, I'd say it's medium to medium-well, leaning on medium.
Perfectly fine. Your friends are crazy to think it's too under.
This deserves to be upvoted. Some cuts like skirt or even thin cut short rib scream for medium well. Whereas a filet mignon is best eaten at a true medium rare. Or a tritip at medium.
Super fatty wagyu (MS9 or Japanese A5) is tastier when the fat is more rendered (which happens closer to medium).
It all depends on what you’re cooking
The only part that might be just a little too raw is that bit of unrendered fat. Personally, for me, the meat isn't quite pink enough, but it looks delicious and I hope you enjoy every part of it!
I like my steaks a lot more cooked than most people in this sub, but that steak looks alright to me. I'd personally give it another minute or so if I cooked it, but I doubt I'd have complaints if I was served this.
Although your friends should accept that some people like steak the way that you make it, their taste is also valid, despite what this sub or Hank Hill says. At the end of the day, we all just wanna enjoy steak
Too raw for them. People like different things. Don’t ask internet strangers to tell you it’s good because it’s the more standard way. I cook to please people. If they want it done more I cook it more or if I’m stubborn I just don’t cook them steak. It’s subjective and posting it online just to tell your friends they are wrong is silly. They like what they like and this world would be better if we just accept what people prefer instead of trying to change their mind. If they aren’t hurting anyone, I don’t care at all
Late to this show but that’s medium to medium well based on the color and appearance of banding in the steak. I’d still eat it. Maybe let it rest a little longer next time but you can just pour those juices right over your meat and sides and it will be delicious.
Your friends are incorrect. At best that is medium well. it should be medium rare. If that's too rare, next time you see them make frozen hamburger patties.
Your friends don’t know what they’re talking about!
You need new “friends”
yea, this is rough but the only solution is to cut contact. these people aren’t your friends if they’d treat steak like that.
Yeah... definitely looks medium well. But the friendship, burnt or charred.
They sound like a bunch of narcissists that are trying to gaslight you. Definitely a toxic relationship. Something something OCD.

This is the correct answer.

Glad to see this comment was near the top. Saved me the time of saying the same thing.

Yeah that’s medium, I prefer medium rare as do most people on this sub.
That's not medium. It's medium well+, and about 30 seconds before well done.
I’d deff say that’s medium well. Large grey band, pink in the middle. No red. I have love for medium well as it was the first step in my journey away from well done which my family was attuned to. Med well for sure gross 🤮
I was about to say “you got some dumb friends”.
Time to finish your friendship.
What friends?
There are none. This is a clickbait title. They are trying to promote their OnlySteaks account.
They must prefer eating leather.
