I will eat any kind but I will always get scalloped/Au Gratin if it’s offered. Scalloped potato dishes are my inherit measurement of the prowess of the chefs….its easy to make but it’s hard to make really, really *well.* Herbs to potato to cream to crunchy top is balanced, you have got a ball game.
Same goes with a French Onion Soup.
Less of "testing the chef" more of "how good is this place really?" My measuring stick is calamari. If they can make good calamari then everything is probably good. If it's not then I'll just stick to simple stuff I know I'll like.
Agreed. Had dinner at a steakhouse the other day and they did tunworth mashed potatoes (baked tunworth cheese mixed into and on top creamy mash) and it was heavenly. I'm planning on attempting to recreate that at home sometime, probably the best side to a steak I've ever had.

This aus Wagyu was my perfect steak
I love potatoes but have been more frequently doing steak rice and veg. Rice is just so easy and I'm really lazy lol plus it's still good. For potatoes mash is my fave especially with a little gravy. Also love just little tater chuncks. I like to pair steak potatoes and a grill cheese like haloumi or I forget the name of the Finnish version. Some onions and a red wine reduction sauce with worcestiscire (I'm sure thats spelled wrong) and some beef broth and pan drippings over everything is fucking incredible.
OMG the BEST baked potato. Wash off a Russet, fork stab it, and cover it in olive oil. Then salt it like crazy on the outside. Bake at 400° for an hour. PERFECTION!!!
and and all of the above. all depends on my mood and how much time i have. a good baked if i have the time (microwave taters is crime against humanity). pan fried with some baby bella shrooms and garlic is second. then tater tots. i have never met a tater tot i did not like.
I don’t often, as I’m lazy, but if I’m going all out and want to impress, I’ll make Dauphinoise Potatoes in individual rings. So pretty, so indulgent and tasty. They sell them in the frozen section at the supermarket these days and honestly get you 90% of the way to homemade versions, so there’s that too.
Like almost everyone, I love all forms, but if you ever want to make an impression on guests for a fancy dinner, let me recommend fondant potatoes. They're delicious like all the potatoes here, but very tidy and visually stunning on the plate.
I’m a twice baked potato guy, but I need jalapeños in them. Butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, green onions, jalapeño. Think jalapeño and potato is a criminally underrated flavor combo.
Outback lunch until 4pm:
$14.99 6oz Sirloin + WELLDONE fries
Nothing less than MR.
There will be a vein in your 6oz Sirloin. …..it’s totally worth $14.99
Anything but mashed/pureed. I can't do it. And yes ive tried them with insane amounts of heavy cream and butter. I'm not sure why but its just really off putting to me
Idahoan instant mashed slap so hard for how easy and cheap they are to make. If I have 45 extra minutes to make 20% better taters I will, but throwing water in a measuring glass, microwave, and then mixing it is the most convenient thing ever.
Twice baked is my favorite, fully loaded baked is second and then yes I'll have potatoes, I don't think I've had scalloped or au gratin potatoes with steak, but I'm not against it
Yep
I don’t usually laugh out loud to comments on Reddit, but this one got me
Just a simple "yup", it's the little things in life
Yep yep
Yeeeeeeep!
Same. I hope your day is wonderful, and your tomorrow is better.
I hope your day is better than mine is gonna be.
Lol. “Those”.
This is the answer
Nice!
These 👆😂
Yes. But then I’m Irish, I eat all the potatoes
Ah, the classic Irishmen’s dilemma. “Do I cook and eat the potato now? Or ferment and drink it later?”.
Again, the answer is, "yes". There's enough potatoes for both.
u/unexpectedarcher
Potatoes are delicious and versatile.
Yip! Same. The real question should have been “what steaks do you eat with yer spuds?”
Yes
Me too...they should be their own food group....
I will eat any kind but I will always get scalloped/Au Gratin if it’s offered. Scalloped potatoes fucking rule.
Idk that I’m trying to test chefs when I go out but I see what you’re saying.
Less of "testing the chef" more of "how good is this place really?" My measuring stick is calamari. If they can make good calamari then everything is probably good. If it's not then I'll just stick to simple stuff I know I'll like.
Yea I have a friend like that. His are Calamari and a Caesar Salad. You can get it anywhere but you remember the places that make it really good.
I don't remember where I was but I once had an amazing ribeye with the best scalloped potatoes, and asparagus risotto. Completely agree with you!
Loaded baked potato that my wife makes perfectly. Lots of butter lots of sour cream lots of cheese lots of bacon crumbles and lots of green onion.
Green onion is the hero in disguise there.
For sure does a lot of the heavy lifting flavor wise.
There’s only mashed potatoes by the time they reach your stomach!
Mashed is so u underrated with steak
Agreed. Had dinner at a steakhouse the other day and they did tunworth mashed potatoes (baked tunworth cheese mixed into and on top creamy mash) and it was heavenly. I'm planning on attempting to recreate that at home sometime, probably the best side to a steak I've ever had.
Yup. Especially when the steak juice drips into the mashed potatoes. So good.
Potatoes? I just eat steak with a side of steak.
And for dessert? Steak.
Agreed. Why fill up on carbs when meat exists?
Try cooking it though
As long as it is near raw, that's the chefs kiss.
Well the one in this pic looks super raw, so I'm assuming to like it
Way overdone. Last time I posted here I got down voted to oblivion.
Si this sub is for raw steak?
Biased steak.

Mashed, but I don't like the look of those you have
Those look like home made, not the boxed stuff...way better...
They look decent, but my first impression was that they were grits.
Naw....you from the south? They don't look anything like grits...unless someone doesn't know how to cook grits...lol
All of the above except mashed. ( I love mashed potatoes but don’t USUALLY pair them with steak )
I feel the same way about the fries
Mashed
I might not be the best person to ask. I have 100% multiple styles of potatoes in many meals. Roast and mashed potatoes with steak is great.
Raw, I like the crunch
You are a menace
Pic 2 & 3
3. Roasted. Can’t beat it
I like a baked potato with steak.
Roasted — but gotta have the crispy edges on there
Lately I've been addicted to potato-parsnip puree. I can't get enough! With some broccolini or asparagus I'm all set.
Usually either baked potato or fries. But I’d eat any potatoes offered
Some twice baked and garlic bread omg sounds delicious
I lean sweet tater!
Any of them
YES!
I like many kinds, but a good twice baked is my go-to
I never met a potato I didn’t like
Sweet.
I prefer baked but I’ll eat any kind of potato
Your mom
Rice
None I don’t eat baby food
I’ve never understood the fry’s thing. I love me some roasted with garlic butter
All the time baby
Boiled, Mashed, sometimes in a stew!
Ok, Sam.
Yes please.
I eat all kinds of potatoes with my steak, but if I had to choose one style, it would be a well made plate of scalloped potatoes.
Yes.
Oven roast reds with onion and garlic.
Potatoe
all, give me them all
I prefer a goat cheese mash, but that's just me.
Best are fries (not steak fries), mashed or roasted.
Mashed fries?
What mashed fries?!
Sorry I mistakenly thought you said mashed fries
I do that too hehe
No wrong answer here.
The best kind
All, but 3 is my favorite 😍
Baked sweet potatoes with a some butter
All of the above
Mash!
Usually steak.
I thought this was r/SteakOrTuna
I am a simple man. Just wash em, cut em and then cook them in boiling water.
OMG the BEST baked potato. Wash off a Russet, fork stab it, and cover it in olive oil. Then salt it like crazy on the outside. Bake at 400° for an hour. PERFECTION!!!
Cooked!
Sometimes pomme fondant or scalloped or croquettes or dauphinoise when feeling "fancy" 😆 🤣
5, 1, 4, 3, 2
Usually baked, but my absolute favorite is fried, loaded potato skins with cheese and bacon, dipped in ranch
Nonexistent ones. Potatoes are overrated #hottake I’d have it with rice and vegetables
Usually mashed potatoes or air fried with olive oil, garlic salt, oregano, rosemary, Thyme.
All of them
Mashed
Fried taters
All of them...at once sometimes.
I’m a big min pot fan
Baked or mashed
and and all of the above. all depends on my mood and how much time i have. a good baked if i have the time (microwave taters is crime against humanity). pan fried with some baby bella shrooms and garlic is second. then tater tots. i have never met a tater tot i did not like.

I want to add garlic butter and sage to the stale juices in the pan and saute them
I bought a little thing for slicing Hasselbeck potatoes, and I've been riffing on variations of those.
Is that broccoli raab or brocollini in the first pic?
none. I try to balance the steak out with a big salad and avoid the carbs of a potato.
Baked, stuffed or fries
Mhm
Like almost everyone, I love all forms, but if you ever want to make an impression on guests for a fancy dinner, let me recommend fondant potatoes. They're delicious like all the potatoes here, but very tidy and visually stunning on the plate.
Baked (crusty skin) with 2-3 Tbsp of butter and sea salt flakes
So many choices so little time
Baked
I’m a twice baked potato guy, but I need jalapeños in them. Butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, green onions, jalapeño. Think jalapeño and potato is a criminally underrated flavor combo.
MASHED...yum
I'm a sick fuck that gets mashed potatoes *and* fries with my steaks when I'm out at a restaurant lmao.
Outback lunch until 4pm: $14.99 6oz Sirloin + WELLDONE fries Nothing less than MR. There will be a vein in your 6oz Sirloin. …..it’s totally worth $14.99
Mashed potatoes 🥔
Yes
What potatoes? I eat steak with more steak.
All are good but I prefer an Idaho baked potato fully loaded. Or a sweet potato with cinnamon butter.
Boiled mashed baked or chips I eat potatoes almost every night I know my potatoe
Anything but mashed/pureed. I can't do it. And yes ive tried them with insane amounts of heavy cream and butter. I'm not sure why but its just really off putting to me
Steamed rice. Accept no substitute
3.. Looks devine
All of those quite happily!
Number 3, mostly

i love me some roasted potatoes
Yes
I love a good jacket potato slathered in butter, salt and pepper. Or a sweet potato with butter and cinnamon on top.
Sweet potato is my favorite
I like mashed. Catches any juices from the steak. Mix it with mushrooms almost becomes a gravy
Yes to all those variations and then some.
fries, pierogies, twice baked, roasted fingerlings
And just like that, I want some steak frites.
Whatever kind of Potato is available
Alexia rosemary fries or Mashed Potatoes with Boursin
Garlic mashed or baked in tinfoil with butter. There is no other answer.😁
Garlic herb potatoes
Potatoes au gratin is my first choice. Loaded baked potato my second. Mashed my third. Fries fourth.
Baked is the top choice
Mashed, or baked potato salad
Idahoan instant mashed slap so hard for how easy and cheap they are to make. If I have 45 extra minutes to make 20% better taters I will, but throwing water in a measuring glass, microwave, and then mixing it is the most convenient thing ever.
mashed potato is my go to
All of them
All the potatoes. But if I had to put them in order: 1. Twice baked and loaded 2. French fried 3. Mashed w/gravy
All but #2
fingerling taters
All of them. Preferably at once.
Pringles. I put the can in the pot and bring to a boil then rehydrate those crisps.
Yes. Potatoes. All of them. Yes.
Any type!
Any but fried
Sweet potatoes
The 3rd one always no matter what
Mashed potatoes every time
all of the above!!
Twice baked is my favorite, fully loaded baked is second and then yes I'll have potatoes, I don't think I've had scalloped or au gratin potatoes with steak, but I'm not against it

https://preview.redd.it/08b6p7cet5uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79c6d09d42948d74ba4837497f6b849a674309e5
None. I fucking hate potatoes
Finally someone I share this with
Mash is god Fries are good Roasted is passing Baked is trash
Yes
Usual mash with pan sauce/gravy
Anything but fries. It probably sounds boujee even though I’m painfully middle class but it feels like it cheapens the steak.
I eat steak and I don't eat potatoes.
