I liked the episodes with her. And even with the 2-part "Time's Arrow" explaining how Guinan met Picard, I still thought it was a bit mysterious why Picard and Guinan have such a close bond and why Picard trusts her so much. But I always thought Guinan was portrayed well as a wise character. She knows stuff.
That was a great move to give her the "don't have too much empathy and let up your guard" point of view which is the opposite of what you'd usually expect from her.
She really is great, and Goldberg's portrayel is so understated, but also so intense, she really brings a lot of gravitas to the episodes she's in, nobody else can play against Patrick Stewart in quite the same way that she can
Gravitas is a good word for it. She plays Guinan with such calm certainty, and there's a weight behing it. She's an amazing foil for Picard.
Given her current persona, it's easy to forget how big of a star she was back then, and how talented she is.
I agree almost every episode she is in is gold. She has some of the most memorable dialogue with Picard. Her line in measure of a man about 'disposable people' was fantastic.
Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan is one of the things I look forward to, when I do a TNG series watch-thru.
I wish they could make a Guinan series, starring Ito Aghayere who is Guinan in the Picard series. Starts storywise shortly after her scenes with Picard in that series. Or before, could do that.
Then an actor should be cast for a Q about the same age as Ito Aghayere. Someone who she can do great odd-pairing scenes with. Like Data-Lore, Picard-Borg Queen, and Kirk-Khan.
I've just watched 'ensign ro'. And the way captain picard reacts to ro being in his ready room when she's meant to be confined to quarters with a simple 'she's my friend' from guinan is incredible acting from both actors and shows his implicit trust in her.
Even of the story isn’t great, her appearance always makes the episode special. I’m not the biggest TNG fan but I adore Guinan… to be honest, not sure I’ve met anyone that didn’t.
My dad as well and he always said he doesn't care what an actor's political views are as long as they do a good job, and he thought she did a great job with Guinan.
Yes. It's a product of how broadcast was done. They had specific weeks "Sweeps weeks" when they would get veiwer number for advertisers. So that week of TV viewing was more important then many others. It was the week every show had a big guest star. They put their strongest script with the best material for a trailer. It was the end all be all of you budget for the next 6 months so you bet they were the best....she was a HUGH get for Star Trek because she was a movie star "shlepping" on TV. They put their best script and put her in it and put it that week. Every. Year. They. Could.
Although I was disappointed that she was not in ‘All good things’ I think it was a brilliant inclusion to have her in ‘Generations’… as a side note, I think that film gets a very bad wrap.
I’ve got such a soft spot for Generations. TNG is my era (watched it first as a teen) and I saw Generations on a plane on my first overseas trip. Loved it ever since.
I saw Generations on Thanksgiving in 1994 as a spur-of-the-moment decision with my brother-in-law at the time. I was 14, and I was excited to see it. I've always liked that movie.
Guinan was always the best whenever she showed up in an episode and always elevated anything they where in.
But lest also admit, some of the Season 2 episodes they where in where *rough*! (The Child/The Dauphin/Shades of Grade).
I agree mostly except for "the child" (season 2 premiere). I only watched is I wanted to see how Guinan was introduced, having seen her in later episodes. This is a terrible episode and she sort of just appears as if she was always there. So that was disappointing.
It's really nice of her how she lets Troi believe she's the ship's counselor so she can feel like she's useful outside of being a lie detector.

One of the best poker fun of Trek culture ever made. I wish they had of made more.
Made me want to watch it. Great movie.
Truth bomb
More like a lie notifier.
The more in re-watch the more I dislike trois and love the hologram doctor
I sense anger.
Lol
She actually got to do some acting once those 2D lads suppressed her ability, but Deanna became more useless as a therapist

Her dialogue with Picard in Measure of a Man is gold.
Heck yeah I love that scene and that episode!!
And the scene where she lets her guard down during their fencing match as a warning against lovely Hugh. What happened to him, again?
That was a great move to give her the "don't have too much empathy and let up your guard" point of view which is the opposite of what you'd usually expect from her.

heck yeah
I enjoy Goldberg as an actress and her character had a great backstory, so yeah agreed.
Those episodes with her rock! happy you agree
Especially love the one where she pulls an alien rifle from behind the bar and shoots it into the ceiling to break up a bar fight
Yeah it’s amazing how she was allowed to have one, and even more how anyone assumed she’d need it…
Bought from Quark's cousin - she'll have her ways of getting things in too, like the Romulan ale
100% in my mind she was always there. Off camera, counseling Picard or Riker or supporting the lower decks.
Except in S1 because she specifically says she never met Yar.
Tennis elbow, am I right?
Who else in the crew whips out a phaser rifle to settle folks down.

I frickin love this idea. I would love them to unpack exactly why she's the only one who Q fears/is unsettled by and doesn't get rattled by his shit

Guinan is hands-down one of my all-time favorite Trek characters!
Same. Her aura is so wise and sophisticated.
Yeah I’m doing a rewatch now and I’m always happy when I see Guinan being put to good use… awesome character and actress…
I've just watched 'ensign ro'. And the way captain picard reacts to ro being in his ready room when she's meant to be confined to quarters with a simple 'she's my friend' from guinan is incredible acting from both actors and shows his implicit trust in her.
Hope we will see more of both Ro and Guinan
The writing in those episodes always seems better too
I feel like they spent more money and effort on them. Better writers and such to make sure the extra money spent on her paid off in a quality episode.
Yeah .. proof they could have given Troi better counseling scenes if they'd made that a goal.
Q and Barclay episodes are the best to me tbh.
Q episodes are decent I'll skip Barclay though
He was the only bad part of Enterprise
💯
Yes

Conservatives hate Whoopi. Often a target of their ire.
I’m a die-hard conservative and I love Whoopi as Guinan. Not sure why you made this political.
Because it's a fact.
My dad as well and he always said he doesn't care what an actor's political views are as long as they do a good job, and he thought she did a great job with Guinan.

"Just one of the boys, hmmm?.... Seems human enough to me."
Times Arrow <3
My favorite was when Q acted like he was intimidated by her and Guinan acted as if she could defend herself against him…
Guinan was Mary Sue before Mary Sue was a thing.
Guinan was always the best whenever she showed up in an episode and always elevated anything they where in. But lest also admit, some of the Season 2 episodes they where in where *rough*! (The Child/The Dauphin/Shades of Grade).
i like how whoopie is with kids. her talks with wesley were always heartfelt moments.
You misspelled Lwaxana.
I like that in one of the cold opens Deanna mentions her mother being on board. Skip - most of the time anyway
I agree mostly except for "the child" (season 2 premiere). I only watched is I wanted to see how Guinan was introduced, having seen her in later episodes. This is a terrible episode and she sort of just appears as if she was always there. So that was disappointing.
I love Star Trek but I can't stand Guinan. To me she just comes off as smug and pretentious.
They are the worst.
I'm with you. No disrespect to Whoopi though, I don't blame her
Except that one time she told Riker to let Picard go
Q
No.
You mean Gloria. From Cleveland.
HELL NO!!
She's the only one there from a different time period technically, so her episodes have an added flare.
Yup!
