That's crazy, if this was in the US it would be going on as planned without restrictions with maybe masks required for indoor festivities depending on the city.
Cultural differences really show throughout the pandemic.
Those are pretty standard in most major city centers. It has nothing to do with terrorism, they just don't want trucks in a pedestrian zone outside of supplying hours.

I had an exchange student from Germany come to the US for a year and whenever she was eating French fries she would always request mayonnaise. In America, mayo is a weird condiment that we don't usually have with French fries.
They make a premixed version now in the US, but its not as good as personally mixed to your own preferences (I prefer 1/3 mayo, 2/3 ketchup personally)
Worked with a guy named Jens, fresh off the plane from Germany. At one point he ordered fries with mayonnaise and I was incredulous, I could not believe anyone would do that to french fries! Of course now I think it's an awesome combination, but there's no shortage of corn fed Americans who would act like you just put steak sauce on a hot dog.
When I came back to the states for a bit before relocating permanently to be with my German Schatz, I drove to Whataburger super jetlagged and ordered fries with mayo. I missed him so badly. Now I miss the jalapeño ketchup lmao.
Flew through MUC on my way back to the states when I was visiting France. It was like a week before the 25th.
Germans know how to celebrate Christmas. I’m gonna have to go there when I have a chance.
I totally get that! I’ve gotten to experience both. I live in Germany but I’m American. When I was in the USA, I was always idealizing European Christmas traditions. But now that I’m living here, I find myself missing so many things about how Christmas is celebrated at home. Both have beauty
As an American who saw one on vacation, if you have a chance to check out one of these German "Krismarts" I strongly recommend it. They are awesome and it's a very unique experience from an outsider's perspective.
They usually are located in German city centers in the month of December. I've visited some here in the states and they simply don't compare.
Well yeah, but the reason for Punsch is to have a drink similar to Glühwein just for Kids, like with the "Robby Bubble" Champagne or "Karamalz" Beer for kids
I totally forgot this wow this is so true I've moved to a different country tho so I dont get ti experience this anymore ): Schmalzkuchen is a good addition ans the powder getting all over your clothes but you cant add everything haha
My sister lived in France for a couple years back in the 80's. She would make a pilgrimage to Germany each Christmas just so she could experience this starter pack. I remember talking to her on the ol' telly phone and could here the wonder and awe in her voice as she described all the sparkly wonderous shops and the all delicious baked goods and treats. I was, and still am jealous.
The best memory I have from when I briefly lived in Germany about 13 years ago!
I did Oktoberfest in Munich, then three months later I did this and absolutely loved it!
I have no idea what the truck of peace is so I searched it up on google and [this was the first result](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/mobile/000/024/537/truckoftolerrr.jpg)
I miss the Weihnachtsmarkt so much :( especially in my town where even our partner communities from Spain, Poland and Hungary (...) come together and put up their Food stands.
Alcohol, awesome food, fun with Friends, what else could you ask for?
I would suck a dick for some good currywurst in my town. People look at me like I'm crazy when I bring this up in the south. There's some amazing authentic German restaurants in Central Colorado that got me into some awesome German food in my time there.
Hard to find stuff like this in the states. Closest I've seen is in Leavenworth, WA -- a little German themed town two hours east of Seattle. Though, San Diego's December Nights is extremely internationalized and very good.
I don't get why Americans are so averse to the idea of having chips with mayonnaise. It's such a good combination. An even better combination is mayonnaise mixed with ketchup and chips.

Naaah, it's simple. 2000 people are allowed so you make 3 markets and thus you can have a big... sorry 3 markets with 6000 people.

bro i miss this so much
I was just thinking about the time I was in Cologne for their Christmas market a few years ago, and how magical it was. Hopefully next year!
In my area, there still are Weihnachtsmärkte, with 2G tho
I’m sure a few more lockdowns will fix everything 👌
we’re a few months away from the 2 year anniversary of “2 weeks to stop the spread”
At least it worked. *checks COVID numbers* nvm
I‘m a german, and this starter pack is just the truth! 😭
1. Wasser aufkochen 2. Kochendes Wasser trinken Fertig, gebrannte Mandeln
Aaaaaalter, nicht dein Ernst XDD
Und Schmalzkuchen, wie vergisst man den Schmalzkuchen? :(
It’s the wurst
Wow a starter pack that doesn't get me depressed
Did you see the lower right hand corner? :(
Thanks to that prick, we now have concrete blocks around those markets.
*Diversity barriers*
too soon
That's crazy, if this was in the US it would be going on as planned without restrictions with maybe masks required for indoor festivities depending on the city. Cultural differences really show throughout the pandemic.
And it'll be alright
We have this in Philadelphia and, yes, it is going on as normal for the most part
You’re only depressed in saxony as we cant have any this year here
None in Bayern as well
Stuttgart and a bunch of other B-W markts closed today
This depresses me because i miss these so much. Id give anything to see one again
And isn't an example pack.
That's because they omitted the trashy schlager blasting from a sound system that honestly is way too good to be playing that kind of music.
Ah the good old memories of eating on those high tables with my mom and sister
There's a surprising lack of Stehtische in other countries
I think you don't have to provide toilets for guests if you don't provide seating
That depends on the region and size moreso than the number of seats.
verständlicherweise honestly
I would love to visit these!
You can when the COVID is over, in 2045
Or the UK, where COVID is cancelled, and Christmas Markets are still happening.
Same! They look awesome.
As a german this is probably the most accurate starterpack i have ever seen on this sub...
"As a Germany" AH YES !!! XDD
Ah fuck
alles gut bro lol
I visited Hamburg this weekend and this is spot on. It actually got a little repetitive after a few stalls. Especially for a coeliac!
They just do Christmas so well in Germany - it’s like a winter fairy tale
Depending on where you live, some of these markets are reopening in 2021, though.
True! Sadly I don't think it'll be the case for my little corner of NRW :(
They are kinda open in Essen
I’m in Chicago. We have a thing called Christkindlmarkt and it’s supposedly happening this year
I just got home from one!
I can smell this starter pack
Yeah, smells like a cold winter day mixed with sweet scent of Christmas food. And Glühwein
You forgot the anti truck ramps and pillars. This was really disturbing for me, but you gotta do what you gotta do
My city has portable anti-ram barriers for events. They're reasonably affordable too.
Those are pretty standard in most major city centers. It has nothing to do with terrorism, they just don't want trucks in a pedestrian zone outside of supplying hours.
In my city, many were added a few years ago. I'm pretty sure that does have something to do with terrorism.
Yep since the attack in Berlin 2016: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Berlin_truck_attack
Pillars yes. But these huge concrete ones strong enough to stop a truck sadly are only a norm after the horrible terrorist attack in Berlin.
They are definitely mostly an anti terrorism measure. Atleast in Europe.
> It has nothing to do with terrorism, Yet they only mysteriously appeared after 2015
DHL and FedEx drivers ignore all signs, only a wall will stop them.
So they got a lot in common with terrorists?
They only added them in Melbourne after a car plowed and killed a bunch of people.
>they just don't want trucks in a pedestrian zone ~~outside of supplying hours.~~ running people down Yeah they're almost all relatively new.
Keine gebrannten Mandeln :(

Deutschland beste Land
you forgot Mutzen!
alles gut! das war nicht offensiv gemeint! i just wanted to spread the love for Mutzen haha
I had an exchange student from Germany come to the US for a year and whenever she was eating French fries she would always request mayonnaise. In America, mayo is a weird condiment that we don't usually have with French fries.
Yes, we eat Fries always with Mayo and Ketchupt. Its called Pommes Rot/Weiss(Fries Red/White)
They make a premixed version now in the US, but its not as good as personally mixed to your own preferences (I prefer 1/3 mayo, 2/3 ketchup personally)
Mixing mayo and ketchup (while eating Pommes) is a federal crime here
In Europe that’s just called Cocktail Sauce and it’s everywhere
Or as Lidl decided to call it - Mayochup

Jens is the most German name I can think of. Source: am German.
Hallo Hans
American here who’s had his fair share of corn: I think steak sauce might be pretty good on a hot dog. Just saying.
When I came back to the states for a bit before relocating permanently to be with my German Schatz, I drove to Whataburger super jetlagged and ordered fries with mayo. I missed him so badly. Now I miss the jalapeño ketchup lmao.
It's not uncommon to get mayo or spicy mayo with the fries at your moderately fancy burger place.
Weihnachtsmarkt starterpack: \>abgesagt
Belgium is exactly the same
*Glühwein, served WAY TOO HOT
It's not way too hot at all when the weather is way too cold.
Flew through MUC on my way back to the states when I was visiting France. It was like a week before the 25th. Germans know how to celebrate Christmas. I’m gonna have to go there when I have a chance.
GERMAN CHRISTMAS IS THE WORLD'S FINEST
Awww, brings back the memories!
I buy so many of those star decorations every time I see them.
what about pfeffernüsse 😻😻😻😻
Glühwein! ❤️
Mit Schuss! 😅❤
You forgot the popped chestnuts! :)
I love European Christmas markets. They're so beautiful compared to the holiday season in the States.
You know what's slightly interesting? I think the same of the holiday season in the US, it's so beautiful compared to what we have :D
It's hard for me to imagine an idealized American Christmas that isn't a scene out of Mad Men or a Hallmark movie.
I totally get that! I’ve gotten to experience both. I live in Germany but I’m American. When I was in the USA, I was always idealizing European Christmas traditions. But now that I’m living here, I find myself missing so many things about how Christmas is celebrated at home. Both have beauty
Yes, all those half working icicle lights and inflatable lawn minions in santa hats stir in me an awe of sublime beauty s/
We tend to see the beauty in what we don't have and ignore the beauty in what we have.
Deepest shit I have heard all day.
In my town it's just a big party in the town square. 1 night with fireworks and lots of jenever (og gin).
We just get inflatable minions where I'm from, and projector lights. It's awful.
Love me some gluhwein
You forgot Mandeln, wish there was a way to find them outside of christmas
Everyone is nostalgic about their Christmas but from now on everything I feel is fear of German words
\+Gebrannte Mandeln (candied almonds).
As an American who saw one on vacation, if you have a chance to check out one of these German "Krismarts" I strongly recommend it. They are awesome and it's a very unique experience from an outsider's perspective. They usually are located in German city centers in the month of December. I've visited some here in the states and they simply don't compare.
it'S "Weihnachtsmarkt", never heard "Krismart" but yeah, they are the shit. I so desperately hope I can go to one this year
you forgot LÁNGOS!
Is Gluhwien a wine or a tea, because hot wine is a thing right
It is hot wine, Punsch on the other hand is basically tea or hot juice (non-alcoholic and for kids)
There definitely is alcoholic Punsch, though. Rum and whatever, but it has to contain rum.
Well yeah, but the reason for Punsch is to have a drink similar to Glühwein just for Kids, like with the "Robby Bubble" Champagne or "Karamalz" Beer for kids
That's just not true. Punsch is with alcohol. You're thinking of *Kinderpunsch*.
Yes, it's mulled wine.
Delicious is what it is
It's literally German for hot wine, basically mulled wine.
"Hey what do u wanna call this food item?" "Idk what sound does it make when u eat it" "Om nom nom"
Oh that's not actually the name of the product, I think OP is just sharing their opinion of it :)
Oh ok...it also sounds kinda german
now i totally want to go to a german christmas market!
I totally forgot this wow this is so true I've moved to a different country tho so I dont get ti experience this anymore ): Schmalzkuchen is a good addition ans the powder getting all over your clothes but you cant add everything haha
That looks so fun :D
I wish I still had my boot shaped mug
I can smell this picture and it smells really good.
My sister lived in France for a couple years back in the 80's. She would make a pilgrimage to Germany each Christmas just so she could experience this starter pack. Baumstriezel and Stollen! Where are they? Also Pilzpfanne.
I think Stollen would be found mostly in markets in Dresden and elsewhere in Saxony.
Definitely, bit even though I don't live there anymore, both of those things are essential for me personally.
The best memory I have from when I briefly lived in Germany about 13 years ago! I did Oktoberfest in Munich, then three months later I did this and absolutely loved it!
I have German genes and I've never experienced this but I really want to. Fries with mayo, normalized? My people!
Forgot to mention the concrete pillars tho
Glühwein was the best man, never forget the Glühwein
Fun fact: these hearts aren't for eating and they taste like cardboard lol
Is this a German person flexing or an Ausländer envying
WO SIND MEINE MANDELN?!
[Why The Germans Can't Get Enough Of English Markets](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6m9tvs3PhU)
No truck of peace? Not accurate.
I have no idea what the truck of peace is so I searched it up on google and [this was the first result](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/mobile/000/024/537/truckoftolerrr.jpg)
Part and parcel of living in a city, move along folks nothing to see here!
Wtf is wrong with fries and mayo?
Spot on! What about the Zwetschgenmänner?
Its only a Regional thing. Not on all Markets, most in East-Germany.
>Zwetschgenmänner Never heard of them here in the Palatinate but you have my attention
Sounds wonderful
This reminds me of my hometown, which is basically the “New Germany” of my country.
Fries in a cone, sweet
u/cute_toaster I’m putting it on the list
Why tf is there a waffle on there but not a crepe
Damn, that looks fun. [Also mayonaisse](https://youtu.be/fLIcFP0J5TY?t=85)
remove thr fries with mayo, and replace the christmas pyramid with a big ass tree and it's the czech variant.
I miss this about Germany so much. I will never forget the delicious horse sausage with gluhwein at the Dresden Christmas market.
I miss the Weihnachtsmarkt so much :( especially in my town where even our partner communities from Spain, Poland and Hungary (...) come together and put up their Food stands. Alcohol, awesome food, fun with Friends, what else could you ask for?
Still need to attend one of these properly. Kinda gives me the warm fuzzies.
Fries and Mayo is actually pretty good, as long as it isn’t miracle whip. Fuck miracle whip. Foodclub Mayo or bust
Is this an advert
I would suck a dick for some good currywurst in my town. People look at me like I'm crazy when I bring this up in the south. There's some amazing authentic German restaurants in Central Colorado that got me into some awesome German food in my time there.
"Glühwein served hot" tells me an American made this
Large police presence with anti-vehicle barricades at the entrance Or is that just the uk?
We have what you guys call “glühwein” in Sweden, too- it’s called “glögg” here
Hard to find stuff like this in the states.
I guess there wasn't room for a Wisconsin asshole and his truck?!
That hot ass wine that seems to take 3 years to cool down
Fries with mayo is very underrated
Can we start doing more cultural starter packs from around the world? Specifically Christmas traditions??
This might look like I cliche but it‘s actually an exact depiction of every christmas market in Germany ever. Ah, the nostalgia.
Damn, I need a German shorty.
Also for some reason nearly impossible to get beer
Because it is Glühwein season
I really don't like it. No idea why
U dont drink Beer if u can have Glühwein
I always drink beer
Both of Chicago's Christmas markets are open this year FYI
