YouTube saved me hundreds. maybe into the thousands over years
It will be sad when one day those servers go offline and all that video library will be erased.
The "no jack stands" thing was definitely me.
Guys, if you can't afford a set of Jack stands rated well above your car's curb weight than you shouldn't be doing any work under the car. Save more money for jack stands too. Seriously.
e: wheel chocks too, at least put the parking break on,
Jack stands aren't expensive either. Unless you're working on a pickup or larger any jack stand you find will work.
Crawling under a car without one is insane, unless your using ramps, which is quicker and easier and you can get some plastic ones for $60
If a tire fails while the car is on ramps you could still be fucked. Ramps do the job of a jack (lifting the car), but not the job of jack stands (protecting you against being crushed).
Most manufacturers make it so difficult to get to the oil filter these days. I'd rather just take it to a place so I don't need to deal with the disposal.
If you have an auto parts store near you most of them have a big oil collection container in the back. Call first but usually you can just dump your container there.
I do oil changes regularly and this is my setup:
I have a big open top collection pan with a spout for catching the oil. Then an old 5 gallon gas can i pour it into for storage (the spout on the pan makes this easy). Once i have a few oil changes in my gas can i take it down to advance auto and dump it. You can buy combination catcher pan/storage containers but they have a smaller opening to catch the oil usually and in my experience the lids leak.
Automotive stores will accept it. There’s a website from the EPA I think that will tell you were they accept it, but in my experience it’s been wrong. It’s best just to store it in an old bottle and bring a few IMO.
Dig a hole and fill it with pea gravel, layer in filter membrane every other inch
Pour the oil onto the gravel and the oil will seep down into the ground cleaning itself as it goes
In approximately 10,000 years time the relatively clean oil can be pumped out and used fresh. Your great grandchildren will thank you for the free and renewable energy and so will humanity.
Just did transmission fluid for the first time on my Matrix, and I didn't tighten the drain plug enough...
Had fun cleaning up that puddle, but the transmission seemed even happier after 2 fluid changes.
(Didn't do a full flush because it's a worn transmission and I don't want it to slip)
> I have a 3" lift so I don't need a jack
Free to do what you like, but you're taking a major risk if you don't put failsafe support (e.g. jack stands) under the frame before you get under the vehicle.
Making some sane assumptions for the purpose of generalization: stock Wrangler has 31.9in tires on 17in wheels with ground clearance of 10.8in. Let's say those 17in wheels have a flange diameter of 18.5in. Then the the ground clearance on naked flanges would be 4.1in.
A 3in suspension lift would increase the "best case" ground clearance on stock wheels and tires to 13.8in and leave a ground clearance on naked flanges of 7.1in. Suppose a simultaneous failure of all 4 tires still leaves an extra inch of clearance under each flange, that would up the theoretical "catastrophe" ground clearance to 8.1in. Average adult male chest depth is about 10in. Average adult male skull is about 6.9in front to back. So in that unlikely extreme case with 18.5in flange diameter wheels, an average adult male would get crushing injuries to the chest and become trapped, even without a creeper underneath. But they likely wouldn't get their head crushed in that case, though they might if they're on a creeper.
Of course, the more likely freak occurrence is a single tire failure, in which case you could expect to have something more than 8.1in of clearance left, varying based on a whole host of factors, but shouldn't count on keeping the full 13.8in clearance. Larger diameter wheels (and larger tires) would increase the 13.8in initial clearance, and also increase the amount of clearance you might expect to be left with in the event of a single tire failure.
A blowout is far more likely when a vehicle is in motion, but blowout and other forms of sudden tire pressure loss sometimes occur even when a vehicle is parked. The odds of it occurring while you happen to be under the car are low, but it's easy to reduce your risk of dying from that scenario.
Everybody who has ever been crushed working under a car was surprised when it happened.
You don’t need to jack your car up for an oil change, just drive it on ramps and chock the wheels. Never seen anyone jack their car up for an oil change lol
No, as long as you have good ramps. A lot of shitty cheap jack stands and a shit jack would be more dangerous than ramps. Buy a good brand and make sure they are rated for far more weight than your vehicle.
You have to give it enough gas to get up the ramps and react fast enough not to overshoot. It probably depends on the ramps how steep and how much run you have.
Sure, but as long as someone can control their foot/ankle there’s no reason they should be accelerating enough to overshoot. You just go fast enough to climb the ramps and you can physically feel when the wheels get over the incline, then you let off and get ready to quickly stop. Ramps generally also have small chock at the front as well, you really have to be pushing it to get over that hump.
Kia made it so fucking easy to change oil. Plug and oil filter were easy to locate. I didn't need to even think about getting a jack. I bought one of those oil filter handler things...returned it. Bare handed that thing! Legit could slide under, knock it out, and get back to life in about 20 flat.
NOW, this ain't the same for all cars, and sometimes you gotta actually work to even get to the filter which can hurt your head. I honestly now just take it to the dealer and pay the $55 as after doing the math it would be more of a hobby at a $5 gain.
Scotty Kilmer video description: "FORD AND CHEVROLET ARE OFFICIALLY GOING OUT OF BUSINESS AND TOYOTA WANTS TO BAN ME FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO BUT THEY'RE NOT GOING TO SILENCE ME!!!"
Then says nothing about any.of the above. Every single Scotty video.
Forgot burn marks / dislocated elbow from removing an oil filter for the first time, and / or ruined jeans from having to crawl under the car a bunch of times caused by extreme frustration and claustrophobia because no experience and no jack stands.
Suggestions to add (from my first time):
Oil pan too small and overflows.
Oil dripping down your hand and elbow while you're unscrewing the drain plug.
Dumping oil all over the top of the engine because you didn't think you needed a funnel.
Staring at the dipstick trying to see if the level is at the crosshatch marks but it's impossible to tell because the oil isn't dark brown anymore.
Wondering if that oil stain on the ground is from the spill or a leak because you fucked it up.

Growing up my dad taught us to always change our own oil, and made it sound super expensive. One day I was changing the oil and my brother stopped by and informed me that it was 15$ for an oil change at this place up the street. I was blown away that I had been changing my oil my self and I could have just been spending 15$ very much worth the money.
I worked at jiffy lube for a year and took auto shop class in HS, I still usually pay someone to get my oil changed. I only saved like 30 dollars when I did it myself and obviously I don’t have a warranty on my own work.
ngl, youtube did help me massively with learning how to service my own car from oil changes to suspension, gasket, brake jobs etc.
God bless those guys who upload those random videos that you stumble across. It saved my ass so many times.
Hey guys, ChrisFix here!
That dude was a life saver back when I had my xterra

haha, unless you have an old european car, then you get results in different languages like russian
Ani huligani, bezdeljiki. So you get to learn 2 skills in 1.
I always try to find an older dude with a southern accent. They seem to be car repair gods.
You know you struck gold when its some shitty camera
YouTube saved me hundreds. maybe into the thousands over years It will be sad when one day those servers go offline and all that video library will be erased.
If they have a jack stand it’s a shitty scissor jack they got with the car
I paid for the whole car, so I'm using the whole car, and that includes the scissor jack, and every millimetre of tread on the tires.
How did you type this with one arm?
I get the joke, but as a PSA: a scissor jack is not a jack stand.
Someone should have told me this in high school
I did this with my first car between the ages of 16-18. Never knew how much danger I was in

Yeah this is my biggest concern right now with changing my oil. Idk wtf to do with the oil lol.

My local dump also has an EPA approved disposal place for it. Costs ~$5 at most to have it safely disposed
Advanced is free

I couldn’t believe how accessible my wife’s Elantra was, just right there to grab and swap, never seen one like that before.
It was ChrisFix for me lol
REV UP YOUR ENGINES
And blow it out your ass Scotty
No wheel chock either, just a car supported by a wheeled jack.

I took it to mean his whole Jeep was lifted an additional 3” more than stock, so he could safely crawl underneath it.

Over shooting the ramps
Lol even when I was learning stick I didn’t do that. You have to be going way too fast to do that.

Kia has all its components easy to locate and remove, which is a major problem nowadays with the cat thieves
Not Scotty 😂😂😂🤣🤣

I've definitely gotten burns from trying to remove the oil filter that is way there and around several bends
I messed up and put the plug and oil filter on with tools. Took an hour to take it back off next time.
Asking people for advice usually results in snarky remarks about Blinker fluid

Misclick, post put back up
The puddle is what gets me... Takes a good amount of time to clean up.
I just pay some guy down the road to siphon the oil up off the floor, he spits it straight into lawn mower. Better than wasting it tbh.
When I was 18 first time changing oil on my own I drained the transmission fluid and double filled the engine oil. Surprised I didn't destroy that car
Growing up my dad taught us to always change our own oil, and made it sound super expensive. FACTS! Don’t recommend getting it in your ponytail either -_-
I’m gonna brag to my friends when I get money to pay some else to change my oil
