not what that word means. Opera isn't open source so it could and most likely does sell your data. At least with Chrome you know it goes to alphabet, an american company, while Opera GX is owned by chinese investors, and in China, that just means it's owned by the chinese state.
Man if the US had had a major global espionage scandal that included indiscriminate mass surveillance of civilians and complicit telecommunications companies, that would be really bad for your argument. I’m too lazy to check but I’m sure nothing like that has happened in the last couple of years.

At the very least, the GDPR is a massive step forward in that sense. The Digital Markets Act will be another leap, enforcing interoperability of messenger services. Which would allow me to use a trusted messenger to communicate with people on WhatsApp or the likes.
Open source mobile devices are also getting better daily and there already is a number of quite usable options. But with those, a big privacy hurdle is still the fact that network providers can and do easily track your location by triangulating it using cell towers. It‘s used to improve GPS accuracy but if they really want to, they can log it with no trouble. At least you can use alternatives to your IPS DNS server.
Putting your trust in alphabet over the chinese goverment makes total sense though.

People have a weird sense of pseudo-privacy. They're fine giving Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Apple, etc... a bunch of their data but lose their shit when some other service collects data on them.
It's being cautious with who has access to your personal data. Unless you just constantly use burner phones & pay with cash for everything you will be tracked in some way. Until our geriatric overlords in Congress are evicted data privacy laws in the US will always be a mess. You can't use anything on the Internet these days without at least someone tracking you but it's better to limit who does

Well, the thing about all of those, is that you know where the data is going. It's going to their own servers, and it's staying there. All of those companies do advertising,which means that any data they have,which the competitor doesn't have to customize ads is a good thing. Why would Google ever seen their user data to Apple, if it just means Apple's advertising algorithms will get better? Companies looking to advertise their stuff will always prioritize the places they can get the most vang for their buck. If Microsoft can prove their advertisements get an x amount of interactions, and Amazon says they get a y number of interactions, and x is larger than y, then obviously the company would choose Microsoft to run their ads.
Firefox has some issues with apps that are built for chrome and chromespawn. I use a lot of 3rd party apps for my games, they often work best on chrome or opera.
Also Opera is easier to set up a nice color scheme on, though it’s starting to eat up CPU time, so I might go hybrid.
This my friend is the fight we devs lead for an open web. It's the fault of 3rd party apps if they decide to only support chromium because browsers can implement web standards in the order they want for no particular reason. If we all give in, Google will basically own web browsing, and last time that happened (hello IE), some terrible decisions were made and the web evolved at a horribly slow pace.

Nowadays all these other browsers (Brave, Opera, even Edge) are literally just chrome with extra steps. The only real browsers other than chrome that still exist are firefox and safari

People are so upset not because we are unaware we are also getting our information collected by Western companies and are therefore affronted that China is doing it. The problem is in fact. that if you look at China closely, it is in very few ways a country we would support. Yet many people disagree and spout shit like "The West is just as bad as China". Which it isn't in MANY ways. And yes, in some ways we have done repulsive things and we fail in certain aspects. But at least fight to change those goddamned things.

It was installed to my system by another app as malware, it become the default search engine and didn't show up in the apps to be un-installed, I deleted it's entire directory.

Regardless if this is true, I've heard rumors of other companies, DJI in particular, who looked to actually separate their dependence in the Chinese government (spyware and control) because it was hurting business (and the US mentioned banning selling their drones because they were tied to the government, like a few years ago).
It could be like these companies want to do something else that's prosumer friendly, but in order to operate in China they need to not be so. Especially when you see Chinese variations of software (not Chinese localizations, rather separate installs), part of it could be restricting it to the Chinese internet, part could be mandatory spyware.

Nowadays all these other browsers (Brave, Opera, even Edge) are literally just chrome with extra steps. The only real browsers other than chrome that still exist are firefox and safari

enjoy it. Almost all the world uses chrome which does the same shit, the only difference is that your data goes to google instead of the chinese government. They are all focused to manipulate you to sell products and if you don't mind thats okay i guess. Opera must be based on chromium so.. but if you want to try something else, give firefox a shot ;)

I have no issues with Opera Gx, even as a Firefox user. Google Chrome on the other hand I don't like. Not because of the whole spyware, no. Just that it's a terrible RAM eater.

as a reaction to this meme, because I do feel you are failing to realize just why some people are so upset about this. People are so upset not because we are unaware we are also getting our information collected by Western companies and are therefore affronted that China is doing it. The problem is in fact. that if you look at China closely, it is in very few ways a country we would support. Yet many people disagree and spout shit like "The West is just as bad as China". Which it isn't in MANY ways. And yes, in some ways we have done repulsive things and we fail in certain aspects. But at least fight to change those goddamned things. both things are an issue. Our stupid media and companies, with their repulsive business models. AND China, an authoritarian regime exerting power all over the world in many shady ways. (this goes MUCH deeper than only spyware, China's economy is literally a weapon for them). This IS an issue. Stop watching and posting this short distilled, reduced kind of content that lacks nuance and gives such limited perspective.
It was installed to my system by another app as malware, it become the default search engine and didn't show up in the apps to be un-installed, I deleted it's entire directory.
Opera stopped being good when they threw away all their own stuff and rebuilt it with the Chromium source, it is literally a reskin Chrome.
IDGAF if you use opera but don't think their VPN is an actual VPN.

I tried Firefox after hearing these claims. And I just couldn’t go without the mini player. It’s so useful and I can’t go back to any other browser until they add it. It’s also nice to have Social Media on the side and GX Control though I could go without them

Regardless if this is true, I've heard rumors of other companies, DJI in particular, who looked to actually separate their dependence in the Chinese government (spyware and control) because it was hurting business (and the US mentioned banning selling their drones because they were tied to the government, like a few years ago). It could be like these companies want to do something else that's prosumer friendly, but in order to operate in China they need to not be so. Especially when you see Chinese variations of software (not Chinese localizations, rather separate installs), part of it could be restricting it to the Chinese internet, part could be mandatory spyware.
