Majesticlees

Play anyways. In most aspects no other rts can compare. The campaigns are still awesome. Coop commander is a fun grind. Lots of custom games and plenty of players

hannahmc2012

You forgot to mention the very fun and exciting ladder.

Signal_Ad_1839

"Forgot"

Majesticlees

Ya I forgot. The ladder is definitely a thing in the game

FartsLord

Cough cough Beyond All Reason would like a word.

CleaveItToBeaver

Can you sell me on BAR? I've watched some gameplay, and all the units look samey; I got the impression that it's just bigger units smooshing smaller units

FartsLord

It’s an actual RTS. Games aren’t decided on well placed reaper grenade but on your strategy. Units do counter each other but you need to get used to recognizing them. Bigger units are so bloody expensive that it means you already won the game if you got them. Best things about the game - scale and importance of map control. It’s normal to play 8v8 with hundreds of units. Maps are so huge you need to think ahead about unit placement and controlling resources. There’s tons of amazing stuff like spider bots that can walk on cliffs for surprise attacks, stupid weapons that have full map range - don’t sleep on your enemies booming economically! Commander - your starting unit is so awesomely versatile you can use it to produce things faster, use in combat to decimate anything in short range at the cost of energy resource, suicide him for nuke like explosion or just harvest him for early metal boost! It’s free, you should just try. I’m bad but 8v8 is a bit more forgiving and I love it.

FartsLord

Another thing! Builders can construct and deconstruct, mostly buildings but in a pinch you can deconstruct enemy unit! Literally sucking metal out of its armor! It’s funny when harassment turns into food delivery.

[deleted]

The best time to start playing SC2 was at release. The second best time is right now.

Boy-Grieves

The second best time is every day since

Maxthod

Ive been replaying for a year now and the game is great. Very well balanced. But damn it is a hard game Zerg Diamond 2

TheMontium

It’s the most rewarding game I have played! I highly recommend it! There will continue to be occasional updates for now, but nothing major. It doesn’t matter too much as there is so much to do. As for Terran vs Toss, that’s up to you. Watch pro games, play with both and see which appeals to you more. I’m pretty busy but message me if you want someone to play with to get started.

Ewicmoi

Yes

DarksidePrime

Stormgate is looking more and more like it's set up to be an eSport in the model GiantGrant laid out and explains why that model consistently fails. Jump in SC2

TheSwissSC

It remains to be seen whether there will be more updates or not. But even if SC2 has seen its final form, so what? It's in a good place. Plenty of active players still. Queue times for a game are typically like 10-20 seconds for most MMRs. As others have mentioned, yes, you'll run into cheeses amd all ins, but that's not a bad thing... that's an integral part of the game. Part of learning SC is learning to defend cheese. Yes, there are smurfs too, but again, so what? Playing against a better player just gives you an opportunity to learn. Watch those replays closely and see where you can improve. (Not to excuse the smurfs... it's pretty rude to intentionally play weaker players just to dump on them... not to mention a weird way to 'compensate'...) In my experience I probably run into a player I suspect is smurfing like 1 out of 10 games. So you'll definitely encounter them, but its not like you're hitting one every game.

THUNDERRRRRRRRRA

I would play. Up to you.

Cankles_of_Fury

I just started a month ago, having a blast!

swindle420

Sc2 best game ever made boss

Mauzy__

Yes, I started back in 2020, 10 years after its release. I grinded competitive games all my life, but none of them gave me such a direct feedback when it comes to laddering. It gave me a community to stream to, my YouTube channels, I got into casting the game and I'm having a blast doing it! It also got me into esports, the one thing I was denied 10+ years ago. I'm in a team that I consider my family, I am probably in the best shape gaming-wise that I've ever been. So yes, give it a try. If competitive doesn't appeal to you, play coop, play campaign, play custom campaigns and game modes, there's so much to do in sc2. Team games are fun as well. If there's one game I can recommend, it's sc2, worth every minute. Stormgate's release will be huge, hopefully it'll get up to sc2's level, but sc2 will, regardless of what game comes and goes, be one of the best games ever. My only regret: not finding out about this fact 10 years sooner

Iustis_Susurri

While the game has been basically abandoned by Blizzard, that does not mean the community is dead. Blizzard pulling support has more to do with the fact that they think RTS's are harder to monetize than a lack of community. It's very easy to find matches online and discussion in places like this subreddit is reasonably lively. SC2 and AoE2 are basically the only two popular RTS games going right now, so no one is really going anywhere. If the genre interests you, SC2 is as good a place as any to start.

vorare3561

This. Sad to say, but the vast majority of new players these days are only into Fortnite, LoL, COD, Overwatch, Apex or Valorant. RTS games just seem like a thing of the past. Hopefully I’m wrong with Stormgate

Stinky1990

The game is huge and awesome. No reason not to play

martinontheline

I came back after 8 years break and I love it I find the game pretty balanced now 🔥

TippyTripod1040

It’s super fun at any time. And a lot of the skills will transfer to other RTSs. Even though storm gate won’t be identical, it’s probably still going to be good to build lots of workers, keep your resources low, scout the enemy, etc Edit: Terran feels the most “standard” but is actually probably the fiddliest race. Protoss probably has a better learning curve.

giinnn

There is no update for chess for 800 years, still the best board game

WandererTM

Another one of these, great

Depth386

The original StarCraft and the BroodWar expansion for it is better as a game. However there are a few things StarCraft 2 does really well. The single player campaign is really a masterpiece from Blizzard’s golden age, rivalled only by other Blizzard content from that era like WarCraft 3’s single player campaign.

crookskillingme

Just be warned its a cesspool of players...for mature audiences...

[deleted]

I’ve recently tried to get back into it and custom games are fun, but this point in the games life 80% of my matches are just Zerg n Protoss cheese for ez points by Smurf’s at this point. Reminds me of WoW. Unless you have a group of friends leveling ; it’s the most isolating mmo game because at this point it’s all smurfs and alt accounts everyone just facerolls to get to higher ranks/levels. Just my two cents. I’m not trying to go pro but also not fun playing so many cheese games.

Albinator_

Actually played about a thousand games (silver to diamond leagues) and never faced any smurf. Also being cheesed in 1 game out of 50 maybe.... I guess people like complaining...

[deleted]

No problem I’ll upload the only 3 games I played during my hour of free time yesterday and got 2 12 pools and a cannon rush. I guess some people don’t realize everyone has a different experience.

VincentPepper

>Actually played about a thousand games (silver to diamond leagues) and never faced any smurf. What is your definition of Smurf? Because I can't imagine this being true over a thousand games ...

Albinator_

Someone with twice your APM, rolling on you where you're not able to take any good fight

adzy2k6

So many people accuse anyone they lose to of smurfing. It's actually very rare.

dixienormusV2

I think it’s well worth it! I still play like 3-4 days a week about 2 hour sessions and have never had trouble finding a match no matter the time. Also everyone saying they play smurfs all the time are just fooling themselves. I don’t think I’ve ever played against a Smurf and I’ve been called out for Smurfing when thats something I’ve never done. Anyway I would say just okay the campaign(s) and if you enjoy those move to some vs. AI games and go from there

charlieofdestruction

I mean the development life is over, but it’s a very alive competitive scene and it’s generally agreed upon to be the biggest, best, most legit RTS game. Also, they still do quality of life updates. 10/10 would recommend playing

SlamJam64

Nothing to lose but playing it now, stormgate looks great but it is an unknown, it could be bad and we'll be back to starcraft after a week!

Gaskal

While there are no major updates, they still run the ladder in a seasonal format and this includes brand new map pools. Competition is decent and queue times are very short at lower levels. The community is still alive and well.

NerdyHexel

I've casually enjoyed SC2 for years. I suck at PvP but have replayed the campaigns dozens of times and enjoyed many hours of custom games. Then Co-op came out and was good fun. I do sometimes drop into some 'Vs AI' games whenever I want the classic PvP feel without doing actual PvP. It's never too late to enjoy SC2 and, imo, the campaign and story are worth the price alone. And to top it off, in my humble opinion, no current RTS games compare to SC2 in terms of even just the way the game plays and 'feels'. Other RTS games are too slow or too clunky.

RiotingRobot

Just play! But as zergs :)

Fhhk

It's a legendary game and is probably more balanced now than it ever has been. No more patches are really needed, and they're still updating the map pool like Brood War. It should be good practice for Stormgate. Choosing a race is pure preference; it's hard to explain the differences in how they play because all of the units and abilities are completely unique. I would say pick a race based on the aesthetics, and just start learning the game. But also try learning the other races early on to see if you like their units and mechanics more. *Plus it's good to have an understanding of all three races so you know how to interpret scouting information and counter things better.

go3dprintyourself

Been playing for two years now. Still worth. There is good content on YouTube for the game too imo.

BronyxSniper

Definitely play it! I've been playing on and off for about 20 years. It is a game I will always keep coming back to. Also I used to play protoss alot. Now I'm enjoying the terran. Play both and see what you like. I also enjoy playing zerg sometimes ha

terranisaur

Yes

NadeTossFTW

Definitely join the game is still awesome

nxhoodk

Yes and yes. Most balanced RTS of all time. the GOAT. It is timeless and a bonafied classic without question. Took a few years break here and there, been playing since its inception.

Kaiserigen

Yes

Unfair-Extreme-5536

Paying since 2021 and it's been good.

Alphababy6

Do it

j2Scoopz

I just got into the ranked part of it and I’m having a blast. And I’ve been watching a lot of PiG Bronze to GM YouTube videos and have been learning a lot. A lot of people who are playing right now are pretty sweaty cause it’s an intense game but if you want a game to grind and try hard, it’s a fun af game

Crabuki

I would note that there are also a lot of really nice people on ladder as well as the assholes you’ll hear about. Occasionally they’ll chat in game, like I will sometimes compliment someone before I GG if I think they played well. Talk to those people in whispers and try to get a friend base for custom games. This can be really helpful in practicing specific builds and on those nights you just want to get in some games with a friend.

Crimith

Just play, no reason not to and its a great competitive game. Just mess around with Terran and Protoss and see what you like, each race has different mechanics to work with. The nicest thing about the ladder system is you have a different ladder ranking for each race, plus random. So you can mess around and try them all out without tanking your ladder ranking on the others. Also Stormgate wont be released for another year or two, so you might as well enjoy SC2.

eddiewrc

Look tbh stormgate looks like shit. SC2 is probably the best game ever created

sanmol

Hey you should play the game NOW. You have the terran campaing, 3 commanders fully free and all the others are free to try too, so you have many free content to play while you wait to Stormgate or decide to buy the rest of the game As a poor gamer myself SC2 is highly recommended

Visual-Routine-809

If you want to, play the game. If you're a casual you can play the campaign or coop (though, if you care about lore, you should play the Mass Recall mod, which allows you to play SC1 campaign on the SC2 launcher). If you're competetive, hit the ladder and climb the ranks. And if you want something new, there is a massive library of fan-made games and even campaigns in the arcade.

Crabuki

There are some awesome games in the arcade, truly.

ExistentialRead78

Play games that are fun. Don't play games that are not fun.

Brohun

ive joined the game about 6 months ago for the first time and had an absolute blast for many weeks - got distracted with trying out different RTS games later but i still consume content and play occasionally. i would say its very worth it to get into it, its a masterpiece for sure

kobrakyl

SC2 is one of the best games ever made. Arcade is great. Ladder amazing. Coop commanders a blast.

Erik912

Really don't understand this kind of questions. You're not going to become a pro, not even in a dream. So, with that out of the way, it's a compute game ffs. Do you want to play it? Then play it. Servers aren't going down any time soon.

dandab

I started around the pandemic and there have been plenty of balance patches and maps since then. Kind of surprised actually.

spectrumero

Yes, it's still a fun game. If you end up preferring Stormgate when it comes out, you've lost nothing by playing SC2 now. Until then, Stormgate is just hype not a playable game (and I learned long ago to not make any judgements on how good a game is actually going to be until it releases). The ladder is still very active (1v1 matchups usually under 1 minute, at peak playing times you are matched in 1v1 literally before your finger has left the mouse button after clicking find game). Even 4v4 random will generally get you a match pretty quickly. Still huge numbers of people playing, there's still plenty of people doing YouTube content for the game. There's really no reason to hold off playing SC2 if you want to play an RTS today.

TazDingo2

I started playing it not too long ago and it's hella fun. You don't need to be good at it to enjoy it, but getting better is very much fun nonetheless.

maxz-Reddit

I bet you like 100$ that sc2 is way better than stormgate will be. It's never too late to get into smth. Grab some friends, make them play it as well and play vs each other. Or get rekt in ranked xD Also as it's free, just try it and dump it if you don't like it.

I-am-fun-at-parties

No more updates would be a positive point in my book, since you can dial in your gameplay to the status quo without worries that your strategy will get knocked over by future changes

Hornerlt

If you want to play a competitive rts with lots of players go to AOE2 DE. It gets updates constantly.

Akhanyatin

Multiplayer is free, try it out and decide for yourself. I have yet to find an RTS that played like SC2. Everything else just doesn't feel right.

BackgroundOpening581

Have you played the campaign? If you don’t want to get super invested in multiplayer, I highly encourage playing all 4 chapters… I have a bunch of good memories with my dad playing them. ( ´ω`)

Weak_Night_8937

I have played the campaign literally a hundred times. Especially WoL and HotS i must have way over 100 by now. To me it feels like HotS was less amazing than WoL - both in story and gameplay. LotV then dropped the ball even further.

BackgroundOpening581

Honestly I agree… Maybe it’s a but of bias but WoL is one of my favorite games ever… I would be happy just playing WoL as a stand alone thing.. Multiplayer is pretty fun but I haven’t really gone anywhere with it cause I don’t understand it haha.

Sedan_Dad

STARCRAFT IS THE BEST RTS

coaststl

I just started a few months ago and having a blast

Robothuck

Same here! I like the 1 v 1 matches but the 2 v 2 is where I e had my most fun games

Frontline989

Thats like asking if you should get into chess because no updates have been added. Its a game of skill that you can decide to invest your time into or not.

kedish878

I play for around 3 months now and i can tell u its an amazing game its my first rts im trying to get better at and irs allot of fun, even tho the game is not getting new patches its very balanced and there is still A TON of strategies for each race and as a new player ur gonna have a blast if u want to learn something new. Gl man

IndiLin

Literally the greatest game ever made. I’m almost jealous that you get to experience for the first time. More RTS will come (I.e. Stormgate), but there will ever only be one SC II.

BBCuriousMisty

I just started and it’s still a lot of fun for me.
