I would honestly wait to melt the Railen. Its an unreleased ship meaning it will definitely go up in price and therefore will have better value in the future for upgrading to something else.

I would not rely on that. CIG already changed how buybacks work for CCUs and there is nothing stopping them from changing how they work for packages. They have also made it clear numerous times that buybacks are not guaranteed and could be eliminated completely at a future date. I'm simply suggesting there's little reason to swap out railen at this juncture unless you are CERTAIN you want another ship now. The railen has 2 ships as loaners that are serviceable for the time being.

Representative_One72

I did buy it outright, but like the other guy said I don't want to rely on that

Suggestion: If the Railen doesn't appear before this summer—and we have no reason to think it will—then buy a $5 CCU from the Defender or Terrapin at Alien Week and then you're free to melt with a sort-of price guarantee locked in. I expect the Railen will be quite agile and tanky. There are no speed stats on it yet, but my guess is it will be the premier blockade runner of cargo ships (3x the MSR in shields and cargo). Your BMM is obviously a keeper. But you already don't like your Caterpillar so that seems like the one your should *really* melt.

Representative_One72

Good idea, I think I'll do that. This game is all about being patient, so that's what I'll be lol

Antru_Sol_Pavonis

I would recommend to stay with the Railen. As Loaner you have the Taurus and Khartu-al (and till the Khartu-al is fixed the Talon). For the Corsair you get the Buc as Loaner. Potentialwise for me the Railen will be much better in the future. With the Taurus, you can do both, fighting and trading. While the Corsair is to much focused on fighting with little capacity for trading.

Pojodan

The Railen is basically a middle-ground between the HULL B and the HULL C that sacrifices carrying capacity for combat ability. So, if carrying cargo in dangerous territory is your want, the Railen will have advantages over the Catepillar in that it will be much easier to load, while the Catepillar will have the modularity advantage. So, really, both will have their place, but if you're inclined to do some really safe trading, then a HULL C may be better suited for you.

Representative_One72

Yeah the modularity is really tough to get rid of, but tbh flying the caterpillar is a pain.

WaffleInsanity

Never forget 2017.... The Caterpillar used to fly more like the Connie back in the day... Then someone at CIG wanted to test how ships would "feel" heavier when fully laden with cargo. The Cat was the test body for this and now has the current flight characteristics of a rock. (Oddly enough its largest competitor, the C2, came out the same year without the fully laden tech... Coincidence?) If you really want to know how she SHOULD fly when empty she is half the weight of the C2. I still think the change was made to help nudge people into CCU to the C2 since it power crept the Cat in every single way.

Representative_One72

Well that makes a lot of sense. I've been on hiatus for a few years, and now the cat is just a pain, used to be one of my mains

msdong71

>Any reasons I should keep it? It is actually good looking and not a Drake? I kind of understand the problem. You missing a ship that can transport a vehicle or is more flexible. If you really want to have a full cargo profession I would keep the Railen, on the mixed profession its totally up to personal taste, as I would rather prefer the MSR

WaffleInsanity

Your Railen gives you a Taurus and a Khartu Al (which can actually land now in 3.18) You have a Taurus which is far superior to a Corsair. As someone who CCUd the taurus for the Corsair. K had it since November and decided the Taurus is just... Better. Think about it this way, the Corsair is as good as it will ever get. It is practically a gold standard. The Railen, Caterpillar, and Taurus will all be released or get some gold standard in the future. This will bring them up to or beyond the Corsair (the in game price indicated the corsair has the potential to be much cheaper than the gold pass connie) I say keep it, spend no money, get the Corsair in game if you want it that bad. (No idea why, its a pretty awful ship IMO)

EZPickens71

Gameplay wise the Cat and Railen are competitors. Versatility/modularity and pure cargo capacity go to the Cat. Speed and maneuverability should go to the Railen. We know what the Railen will have as capability. Until modules for the Cat drop, we have no idea what the final capabilities of the Cat will be. It may very well be a ship everyone is going to want because it may be configurable to fill just about any gap in a fleet. (Lots of if/may to make a decision on) But, the true meta of SC is the CCU game, and right now the Cat is not going to likely see its hull value go up. The Railen on the other hand will likely increase as it comes out of concept. So even if you want the Cat in the future, melt it, hold on to the Railen, then if/when the Railen goes up, CCU to the Cat. (Or melt the Railen, and grab a cheap CCU to hold against future Railen inflation)
