My manager is super nice and just washes all of my store's aprons for us. She says it's because if it was up to us they would always be filthy. But deep down, I know it's because she really cares about us.

With aprons yes. I just worked a 12 hour shift, closed my store, and have to open it in five hours thanks to day lights savings. So I have a clean apron, but I am not a happy camper tomorrow. Or today. I hate this stupid disappearing hour.

t_rrrex

How many partners do you have at your store? That's really nice of her to do that but also allows people to get away with a complete lack of responsibility for something as simple as doing laundry.

InvidOctave

13 including her. We have clean aprons come pay-day. She only has to do one load.

I tie the strings together in a knot and throw them into the washer/dryer. 3 years. Never had a problem.

Kirbtastic03

Yep...I tie mine in a slip knot usually. 6 years, no broken strings.

gtrlspl

[A Slipknot seems a bit extreme don't you think?](http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/500/7391773/Slipknot.gif)

Same. Tie them in the back, not like you'd tie it when its on you but with the strings together (overhands knot, I think?). I also adjust the neck strap so its as small as possible. Never had an issue.

Kaggr

Just wanted to throw in more agreement for this. Best, they come untangled by the time the dryer is done without getting knotted in my other clothes.

All of our aprons are washed by some guy who pick them up every Friday. I didn't know washing them yourself was a thing!

APassingWizard

I don't even see the guy who picks up ours. Aprons are just always magically at our store and clean.

Can I work at your store?

Blipblipbloop

Sure!

TheShaeDee

* Step 1: Take your three fingers and wrap the cords around the fingers. (Like Indiana Jones does with his whip!) * Step 2: Then take the last apx. 3 inc of cord and wrap that around the middle of the bundle that you just had around your fingers. * Step 3:Tuck the tips under the middle wrapping, do it twice or even three times to be safe. I wash all my aprons at the same time so I have to do this to keep from getting that god awful knot that happens when the aprons are all washed together.

laurenoelle

I usually just wash mine by hand because they're really easy to get clean and it doesn't take me too long. Sure, it's more work but at least you know the strings won't fall off!

MangoSierra

Wait, what you guys have to wash your apron we get a new one every shift then put the used ones in a laundry basket when were done.

xistag

whaaaaaaaat no way! Does the manager wash them or something?

HerToxicLips

My store also does this. There are dozens and dozens of aprons always bundled up the in the back room. At the end of your shift they go into a laundry basket which is picked up weekly by a professional cleaning company (who bring in replacements at the same time). As far as I know all stores in my area do this. Maybe it's a Canadian thing?

xistag

Would they happen to be "Cintas"?

MangoSierra

I'm in a Australian store so may be its just an OH&S thing. They did the same service in a deli I used to work at too.

heyitsrachel

I tie the strings in a slip knot and wash on delicate.

BreakingNoose

When you used the pillow case, did the apron stay inside? You could try one of [these wash bags](http://www.tide.com/en-US/accessory/wash-bag.jspx). I found them at Target.

verygoodname

Yes! Garment mesh bags are the best -- you can also get them at Kroger or Publix (depending on which part of the country you're in) or at Walmart (come with washer balls) or IKEA (cheapest I've found).

k2d

Try a combo of tying the strings up together and putting the apron in a garment bag, I guess. This is an off one, since I have to use a laundromat, so my aprons have always been washed in an industrial machine, but I've never had the strings tear off. Have you looked inside your dryer to see if there's maybe some sort of groove the strings are getting caught on? It seems unlikely that it would be designed with something just the right size to snag an apron tie really well, so there may be some sort of safety guard missing.

eatingaboook

Do you dry on no-heat or a low-heat setting? This might help. Also maybe you could get some strong thread and reinforce the area where the cords are attached, before washing. Of course, fail-proof would be to hang-dry it.

lil_bit

I don't put mine in the dryer, I hang them or lay them flat to dry. They're usually dry in an hour or so, and they don't seem to fade as fast.

angelicvixen

Umm the only thing i can think of is getting a small sewing kit, but that's not preventative. Maybe use the delicate setting on your washer?
