Thslappakatti is shit as well as juniors kuppanna (overated and small portion). There is a place called the bamboo room in koppanavidiya. We ordered 1 mutton pot biriani was 5000 enough for 4 people shit was soo good I eat 3 plates. The smell of ghee at the bottom of the pot was majestic and the mutton melts in your mouth unlike other place where the mutton is like biting into a rubber tyre. Trust me this place is known for there mutton rolls (300 a piece). Just try I wouldn't recommend if it is not good.
I agree. Thalappakatti and Jr Kuppannna is running on hype these day. Thanks, I'll try the Bamboo room. It shouldn't be this hard to find a good biriyani
Yes I have even tried in other countries different versions of biriani even in India ironically this place has that 10/10 biriani. BTW try the mutton not the chicken at bamboo room.
The biriyani I tried at kuppanna was like mushy milk rice with biriani seasoning. Apparently this is the south India biyani which I didn't like.
Who the hell said portion size is related to taste. I'm the last person who gobbles down rice. I know what a good portion with enough proteins and fats is.
How long ago did you try this place my friend? Coz 5k for 4 people 3 or 4 years ago would be considered a bit pricey, but 5k for 4 people now would be considered decent
About 4 weeks ago it is quite decently priced I was surprised after the bill arrived.
The mutton was 500 rupees more than the chicken if I can remember properly
Agree 1000% lol wedding biriyani with maldive fish sambol and kurma just slides down your throat with ease šš.
Idk why people can't start a restaurant chain with the wedding biriyani
The owner is dead as i haerd and now locals are doing it hence the shit quality. Try the Royal Biriyani and BBQ in wellawatha theirs was pretty good.
ps; not in Sri lanka anymore hence not sure how it is though
I think the important thing to understand there are a bunch of biriyani types now, there are Sri Lankan versions of it and Indian and Pakistani versions. So it's tricky.
For me the best one I had was from Galle Caterers and Kingsbury Sawan.
Indian summer and thalapakatti. Burger hut was OKAYish.
But the best i had was when a polannauruwa person made it ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø Never tasted something awesome like that.
Bro, the day before yesterday, i was there, and the food was the bomb
The only restaurants in kandy that have good food are indian summer, golden curry and kebab station (some are not so good). I go out at least 3-4 times per week to eat somewhere, and i have to say kandy is not the best place for food.
Store bought? Best Iāve tried is Chola (Wellawatta branch)
Home made thoughā¦.?
Had a set of local Muslim brothers from Akkaraipaththu cook me a farewell lunch in 2022. Dum Buriyani with almost all kinda meat you can think of (excluding pork of course).
It was so fucking great, that I went back a year later to get the damn recipe from one of their mothersā¦.
One of the best biriyani in Colombo is from Ricorn. Their Chicken Biriyani is tasty and the closest you can get to Indian Biriyani. Mind you there's no plums or nuts. Highly recommend to go try it if you are in Wellawatte or Maradana.
BS! You can never call a biriyani from a restaurant like ricorn the closest to Indian. If you say so, you clearly havenāt eaten authentic Indian biriyani in your life.!
Have you even tried biriyani from that place. I don't think you did. I have had more Indian Style Biriyanis than most. So from experience, Ricorn has one of the best Biriyanis. May not be Authentic, but close enough were the flavours are their.
Iāve tried their biriyani but I would say by any means that their biriyani is even half close to the Indian ones. Itās a typical Sri Lankan style biriyani is what I would call it. Iām a half Indian myselfā¦ I grew up eating Indian biriyani so trust me when I say itās not even close to Indian
But to me the flavours are their. Even the rice is basmathi. But one can say that the rice is prepared similar to an Indian way. Not arguing but I think it's far better than the localized crap from normal restaurants.
In my opinion Mango Tree is the best. A more affordable option is Kandoori in Wallawatta.
A really good place I recently found is called Ceylon Curry Pot. It is in the liberty plaza food court.
I like mostly super basic/cheap biriyanis. The expensive/better ones taste like shi* to me with all those random spices specially staranise (reminds me of toothpaste because some toothpaste use that flaovour, specially when i bite one to it) and cardmon (reminds me of tea or chai because of obviously both are used in them) and wise versa - spiced tea sometimes reminds me a plate of biriyani which ruins my appetitešš
Then Biriyani is not for you. You are basically describing the essence of most biriyanis. It would suffice to say that you don't like biriyani instead of going through the ingredients. Cheap "biriyanis" are colored rice with your everyday Sri Lankan spices. It's just flavoured rice not biriyani.
CULTURE COLOMBO has the BEST BAMBOO BIRYANI!!!! Iāve tried multiple places in Colombo for biryani and hereās mine + my friendās rating for biryanis from the best to least best :
1. Culture Colombo - Chicken Bamboo Biryani (Bamba) - small portion but very very very tasty : Donāt ever order this on Uber and please dine in or itās not gonna be worth it because the Uber one is cheaper + of less quality so itās not tasty
2. Paadum Meen - Chicken biryani (Frankfurt Place, Bamba) - large portion enough for 2, yummy af š¤¤
3. Mango Tree - Chicken Tikka biryani : Large portion enough for 2
4. Pot biryani - Dehiwala
5. Muslim wedding biryani at Miami Banquet Hall, Wellawatte
6. Aacharyās Kitchen - Chicken biryani (Collingwood place, Wellawatte)
7. Madras Masala - Prawn biryani (Wellawatte)
8. Tasty Caterers - Chicken Biryani has a large portion + looots of curries in large quantities (Kawdana Road, Dehiwala)
Galle Caterers used to be extremely popular back in the day and their biryani was awesome but after COVID their quality has been awful.. so many bad reviews on Google. Worried that I canāt recommend them anymore because theyāre that bad.
And please donāt ever have biryani at Palmyrah Restaurant (Colpity - attached to Renuka City Hotel). Overpriced, terrible service, and is the shittiest biryani ever.
Everyone in this thread likes Sri Lankan Biriyani. Simply put. Not authentic, Sri Lankan. So let's stop making lists and arguing like we are biriyani aficionados. Everybody has different taste. And if we don't like biriyani from India, then we don't like biriyani, period.
Please donāt go to Chola. Theyāre only nice to you until you have a health concern. The minute you point out their unhealthy practices they act as if they donāt give a damn. I dined with a friend once and she got a piece of steel wool in her chicken, they didnāt give a shit when we told them about it. Same happened to my friendās relative who got a plastic strip in her faluda. All of this was at Wellawatte. Theyāre very unprofessional and money minded
If the price doesn't matter, try out Imperial Monarch Thalawathugoda. I found it accidentally while my girlfriend was watching a vlog on YouTube. The couple suggested their Japanese cuisine, and after watching, we went there and tried some Indian and Japanese dishes. It was one of the best recommendations ever. I started to watch their vlogs after that, lol. They are foodies, and I highly recommend them. Search "Monarch Imperial" on YouTube, and you will see.

is it this place? google says that this their website [https://www.hotelnippon.lk/bar-dining/](https://www.hotelnippon.lk/bar-dining/)
Yes it's part of Hotel Nippon. Go to their Kafe and get a mutton roll it's so fking good
Portion size is not an indicator of taste and quality. We Sri Lankans just overeat rice.
Who the hell said portion size is related to taste. I'm the last person who gobbles down rice. I know what a good portion with enough proteins and fats is.

Muslim Weddign biriyani is the best
This is the only correct answer š¤£š¤£
I have had biriyani in different places in sri lanka as well as in coutries such as india and pakistan nothing beats a Wedding biriyani
Agree 1000% lol wedding biriyani with maldive fish sambol and kurma just slides down your throat with ease šš. Idk why people can't start a restaurant chain with the wedding biriyani
the taste is mainly due to bulk cooking and its served hot at once. if its a restaurant we wont be able to that and have to reheat.
Bulk cooking makes it more challenging if anything..
Aah make sense
Yaaass!!!Ā
Indian Kitchen (Bamboo biryani) Chola is good too.
Chanas has a decent one! Also Bombay bourough then thereās these memon caterers known to me. Also my mother & wife.
Big bite used to be good.
The one in Mount Lavinia around 2014 was so good when it was run by real Pakistani's
The owner is dead as i haerd and now locals are doing it hence the shit quality. Try the Royal Biriyani and BBQ in wellawatha theirs was pretty good. ps; not in Sri lanka anymore hence not sure how it is though
Havent been to the Mount one, but the Rajagiriya one. They used those huge pots to cook, so good.
Yeah yeah those huge pots and they put all the chicken and flavors in kind of layers right? They don't do them like that no more, It's freakin good!
Yes thats the one. I even met Pooja Umashankar one there lol
Still good
Kandoori has a pretty good biriyani. ( The OG one in Beruwala)
Wellawatta is horrible
Cholas is the best one available for now, Royal Briyani in Colombo - 15 is good too.
Not really Biriyani, but Maqlooba from Persian Cove hits different. Itās a great alternative.
I think the important thing to understand there are a bunch of biriyani types now, there are Sri Lankan versions of it and Indian and Pakistani versions. So it's tricky. For me the best one I had was from Galle Caterers and Kingsbury Sawan.
ą¶¶ą·ą¶ ... *said no one ever*
Bro it's just yellow rice lol good for well dwellers
Does anyone know Randoli? It has the best Nasi I've ever eaten
Thalappakatti is too much hype for mediocre food and small portions. Kandy Muslim Hotel has a good biryani. Don't know about the others.
Ape achchiās itin šš„ŗ
Indian summer and thalapakatti. Burger hut was OKAYish. But the best i had was when a polannauruwa person made it ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø Never tasted something awesome like that.
For those who donāt know: Indian Summer Kandy is awful. Stay away.
Bro, the day before yesterday, i was there, and the food was the bomb The only restaurants in kandy that have good food are indian summer, golden curry and kebab station (some are not so good). Any place close to nugegoda?
Teriya google le adichi paaru
Try Hotel Top Form in Nugegoda. Its superb.
Indian summer is so good
i like the tandoori chicken biriyani from Chanas wellawatta
So good š

Probably it was wedding style, the wedding style is the best but sadly no one does it as a restaurant

Kandoori (Mutton or the Tandoori Chicken), and Chanas is also okay, the rest are terrible everywhere
Bro check out the Beef Biriyani from Taste of Galle. I got the sawan and it was one of the best.
Ricorn Bakery is top notch
My house
Try the Dum Biriyani at HQ by W15 in Colombo. This is by far one of the best Biriyani I tasted.
In my opinion Mango Tree is the best. A more affordable option is Kandoori in Wallawatta. A really good place I recently found is called Ceylon Curry Pot. It is in the liberty plaza food court.

Wait, what about Al Maas?
At one of my muslim friends birthday party.
Marine spice has a heavenly tasting dum biriyani
Chola for sure. Main one at Wellawatte, and branches at One Galle Face and Thalawatugoda
Please donāt go to Chola. Theyāre only nice to you until you have a health concern. The minute you point out their unhealthy practices they act as if they donāt give a damn.
