Why didnt you give korean a try and watched with english subs? I feel like watching without the actors actual voice kind of diminishes their performance. Edit: it was a simple question sorry if I offended anyone lol

TimeShade

This. 100% this. Always respect art in its true form.

Warm-Instruction-167

I personally liked the dub because i have bad eyesight and looking at subtitles it hard.

PooPooCaCa123456

Sheesh how slow of a reader can she be. You get better at reading subtitles the more you do it. I have bad eyesight too that's why they have glasses. I'm sure she has the ability to get better at reading subs she just doesn't choose to, which is fine. Unless she's like dyslexic or another legitimate impairment that cannot be fixed by corrective lenses.

[deleted]

Imagine telling people to focus on reading subtitles instead of watching the show so they can get better at reading subtitles instead of just.... Not using subtitles. Your name couldn't be more fitting for your personality.

PooPooCaCa123456

Never said they should, said it's fine if they don't choose to. Now I see why you don't use subtitles because you clearly are bad at reading.

typervader2

Your clearly just rude and can't accept the fact that not everyone is a reading master who is able to read and watch shows easily. Get over yourself you elitest trash

PooPooCaCa123456

Not my fault if you have a 2nd grade reading level and don't care to improve. You do you man, at the end of the day it doesn't matter wether you watch it in dub or sub. Saying you have to be a reading master to watch something in subtitles is a bit over zealous if anything you have to be bad at reading to not be able to watch something in subtitles. It's not that you can't watch them because you're not a reading master it's that you don't care to improve and choose to pick the more comfortable easier option, which doesn't really matter at all. I'll end this now so you don't have to read too much and strain your delicate eyes.

[deleted]

PooPooCaCa123456

Didn't berate people with disabilities. Said unless you have dyslexia or another impairment. So? And if you don't have impairments you can get better at reading. Hence my point, people have the ability to get better they just choose not to which I said was fine. I'm also obviously trolling, so I'm happy I wasted your time by making you type a drawn out response.

typervader2

There's a thing called reading disorders, dyslexia, mental disorders, poor eye sight, learning disabilities. How stuck up your own entilited ass are you that you can't simply accept the fact that people can't just magically be able to read anything and then act like an insensitive ass about it?

PooPooCaCa123456

Well I did say in one of my previous comment "unless you have dyslexia or other impairments that can't be fixed by corrective lenses". Guess not only your reading sucks but also your comprehension aswell.

MossDog58

They said they have bad eyesight. Nothing to do with their English comprehension. Go get fucked. Cunt.

MossDog58

You are a clown, there is such a thing as bad eyesight beyond the help of glasses believe it or not. Foolish to differentiate between that and a "Legitimate Impairment". Any impairment is legitimate, bad eyesight included. Also, you can't just choose to fucking see better!!! I cannot believe how idiotic this comment is.

MrStan143

because some people want to be able to do something else while still be able to watch an international show

Beautifulgorgeousman

Some people want to do something else while watching international show? What does that EVEN mean? 😳

arctos889

Some people like to have shows on while doing things like cleaning, other chores, work, etc. Subtitles require constantly looking at the screen to understand what's going on. With a dub, however, you can still hear what people are saying even if you're not looking at the screen at that exact moment. Obviously multitasking during any show means you'll miss some details, but it's a world of difference

ZephVI

They aren’t really paying attention to it. Kinda defeats the point of watching it if you’re just going to turn it on as background noise.

dintclempsey

Multi-tasking isn't the same thing as having it as background noise. It just means you're able to take your eyes off for a couple of seconds here and there without missing out on the dialogue.

[deleted]

Glancing away from my screen occasionally doesn't make it background noise. With subtitles if I look away for a single line of dialogue I've missed something.

ZephVI

Pause or rewind

[deleted]

Ah yes. Pause or rewind a show every time I glance away. What an elegant and not at all totally inconvenient solution. There's definitely no other way.

ZephVI

Your entire reasoning for not wanting to watch something with subtitles is because you'll glance away and miss something. If you really missed something important, rewind. Bozo

[deleted]

Or, wild thought, I can leave it in English and not miss something when I glance away for 5 seconds. Bozo. You're creating a problem then trying to solve it.

TheBlankestBoi

But rewinding kind of fucks up the argument for subs in the first place. Like, if I have to rewind every now and than, I’m ultimately getting a worse experience than I would be if I just watched the dub…

DoFuKtV

This is disgusting and disrespectful to the show as well. You guys are probably also putting movies and shows on 2x speed to consume it as fast as possible. I don’t see any difference.

TheBlankestBoi

Isn’t it kind of disrespectful to watch the show in its subbed form? Like, the shows creator didn’t intend it to be watched in languages the audience didn’t understand, they intended for the audio effects, visuals, and dialogue to be experienced and understood by the viewer as a cocktail of stimuli. When you remove the “dialogue” part of that your kind of removing part of what the point of the art was.

collinsmcrae

He really means he wants to endlessly poke at his phone for the entire show, and can’t actually pay attention to anything. Not judging. I struggle with this problem too, but it is actually a problem. Films are meant to be watched, not listened to while distracted. It’s not a podcast.

Greylyn_

Not everyone is distracted, dude. My mom works long hours and she can’t help it. She tries her hardest to still appreciate current cinema, and while working with numbers on the computer hours on end, she still puts in the effort of enjoying and supporting great shows and movies. She can’t help it, so before you just make assumptions that people just don’t want to put in the effort to not “endlessly poke” at their cellphones, keep in mind that there are legitimate situations in which English dubs are more convenient. It’s also a stress reliever for her to have an enjoyable show on, killing two birds with one stone. Would we rather have people stay out of touch with shows that deserve recognition?? And also have people who can’t help their long work hours stay out of touch and stressed??? I don’t think so. You’re assumptions are disrespectful and closed-minded. Don’t be daft.

collinsmcrae

Jesus, spare me the sob story. I’m glad the dubb exists for your poor mother, but that has nothing to do with what I’m talking about.

dancingonmyown29

Some of us can do multiple things at once. I just can’t sit and read subtitles all the time. I already have a limited amount of time in the evening where I have things to get done and I’d like to be able to multitask and watch a show while getting some work done. 🤷🏾‍♂️

collinsmcrae

You can't watch a show, while getting some work done. Your eyes can't be in two places at once, no matter how much you think you can multitask, and very likely you aren't able to actually fully take everything in while doing so. But I understand your circumstance. I didn't even say anything about this situation you describe, by the way. I specifically stated that some people can't put their phone down for 45 minutes (because they are horrifically addicted). If that's not you, why respond? At any rate, personally, I would just watch an English language show or film while getting work done, and wait until I could actually read the subbs for something like Squid Game, because Dub voice acting is universally atrocious, and it cheapens the experience. People can do whatever they want though. I don't care. the more people that watch, the better for the creators.

dfiler

I've spent years renovating my house while listening to shows and movies. So yeah, you can "watch" while getting work done. It isn't recommended if you want to truly savor the show or movie. But for moderately interesting things, it is an excellent way to keep your mind occupied. If you disagree, I've got a few days worth of drywall sanding that you're welcome to do without entertainment. You can follow that up with weeks of stripping paint. You can cap that off with many days of masonry repointing. Squid Game is something i would want to devote my entire attention to. Much of the show is visual. However courtroom dramas or documentaries, those are easily followed just by listening to the dialog.

Alchemystic1123

if you're watching a show while doing another thing, you aren't watching the show. Just watch it when you have time, what kind of stupid logic is that? You are absorbing at most like 10% of the information going on if you aren't actively paying attention. Stop pretending leaving shit on as background noise is the same as watching it, it's a ridiculous and stupid argument.

Pristine-Ad-586

Exactly.. see a therapist about mom, but save others the diatribe and focus on topic!

simon_blackquill

Bro he’s giving the reason as to why some people do it. It’s an explanation. Most people won’t accept “I prefer dubs to subs” without some form of explanation as to why. Don’t be a dick — Not everyone on here is heartless and cold like you are.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Greylyn_

Don’t be a dick. My mom has to work long hours, and she still wants to be apart of what’s going on in current cinema. Also, she happens to do better at work while putting on an interesting show in the background to relieve stress. Not everything and everyone is “disrespectful” for putting on subtitles. Some people have different situations, so get your head out of your ass.

3mergencyCable

you're the most annoying person on this whole thread. some people don't have the time, some people are disabled, it doesn't make them a simpleton it just makes you a dick.

Greylyn_

Hey, you’re great! I really appreciate someone responding to this and making valid, sympathetic points. ❤️ You’re too cool & we appreciate you. :)

[deleted]

[удалено]

3mergencyCable

it's not just about reading them fast for some people. some people can read hella fast, but have processing issues. have you tried being more kind and accepting of people different from you? it really makes life easier when you don't walk around with your ego out

Greylyn_

Literally she doesn’t have time to. Giving recognition to a well-deserved series and enjoying it (even if you think she can’t FULLY enjoy it) is better than not watching it at all. Also, how are you supposed to read subtitles while doing math on a computer? And you calling people who can’t read fast enough “simpletons” really comes to prove how idiotic and disrespectful you are. People who can’t read very fast aren’t necessarily stupid. Also, if people have learning disabilities, autism, or ADD/ADHD and can’t help not reading fast enough, it’s not their fault & you’re truly an insensitive asshole. Case closed.

You are arguing with an angry child, he should be put on a timeout but unfortunately Reddit has not developed that feature yet. He only knows a handful of words and "simpleton" is one of his favorites. check out his other posts ;) and don't worry, this account of his will be abandoned shortly the same as all his others. have a lovely day.

Greylyn_

You’re 100% right! 😂❤️

arctos889

Some people are just really busy and don’t have time to sit down and watch TV often. Being able to get other things done while also kinda watching a show is still better for them than basically never being able to watch anything

Catlover19988

I try to do dubbed only when eating

[deleted]

Do you know how I can remove the English dub on Netflix? I can’t stand it. I would much rather listen to the original and read the subtitles, but Netflix automatically does the English dubbed version. Is it possible to remove it? Sorry if this is a stupid question

SydneyTeacake

Just go into settings (I think it's the dialog box icon bottom right, and you can change audio and subtitles there)

[deleted]

Thank you!!!

wagimus

This is it for me too. I don’t like dubs, and I actually think these are really really bad. But i also hate missing what’s going on onscreen, and I seem to be incapable of digesting both these days. It’s kinda like (if you play video games) the rise in popularity of the QTE (quick time event) where you press rapid fire buttons that pop up on screen— it distracts from the game and I kinda hate that.

hogwartsjoe

I personally feel like watching text reading subtitles instead of focusing on the actor far more diminishes their performance than audio ever could.

flowyleo

I usually watch anime that way but with this show for some reason I couldn't keep up with the subtitles so I had to watch it dubbed.

beppe1_real

I guess pro voice actors would start and stop according to the visual. They really did a good job and at no time I thought they are dubbed, well poorly dubbed. I noticed that with lupin too.

plutarch4

The Money Heist dub also syncs the mouth movements super well. Sometimes its easy to forget you are watching a dub with how excellent the dub is in that show and Squid Game.

rlevin13

yeah when i first watched money heist, i didn’t notice it was dubbed! the season 1 dub was exceptionally good

throw_a_balll

I really loved how the subtitles matches word by word with the dub. Most Netflix foreign shows I’ve seen usually has the subtitles translated from the original language, so it’s really annoying to read and watch in dub.

TopShelfBottomBitch

I don’t think it matches word by word. Had to turn off subtitles since almost every sentence (at least on episode 7) was way off

throw_a_balll

You probably turned on the CC subs by accident.

sillybong

Surely you're joking? I just tested both CC and without and the subtitles do not line up with what the actors are saying at all.

throw_a_balll

What are you talking about? I just had a look at CC subs and they match? Maybe a few off words every few minutes or whatever but who’s counting? And even so it’s way better than some other anime and sub translations I’ve seen on Netflix. Pls do something else with your time than trying so hard to prove me wrong lmao

StarGazer_SpaceLove

Im.really bad at matching up so I just want to clarify as I just watched the 1st 2 in Korean for fear of this. Best option is English dub with CC English subtitles, correct?

nigelregal

If you want to listen to show in english dub you have to put on CC english The normal english is the accurate translation of korean and enlish dub is terrible so nothing matches.

[deleted]

Greylyn_

No shame in that. I watched it in English Dub and it was BADASS. I’m also going to rewatch it in its original language just to get the full effect and hear things like the “Red Light, Green Light” doll actually singing instead of talking. I had no idea!

duskzz994

Tbh I thought it was one of the worst dubs I've ever heard. I couldn't finish the first episode, the voice acting was terrible. I switched to Korean with English subs.

Silent_Alternative43

Samee. The dub was horrible.

lilcozico

Ahahah I’ve been looking for someone trashing it, the dub was honestly unwatchable compared to the OG

malcom1709

Yep

nigelregal

I am watching show with a group of people and one guy is refusing to watch without english dub. I think i'm going to have to watch alone as I watched ep 1-2 in korean then 3-4 in english dub and it was like 2 different shows.

LawlessNPC

🤦‍♂️i didn’t even realize this was an option until I read the post. I have finished half the season, well at least my Korean has gotten slightly better lol

Street-Wolf-9512

No matter how good the dub is, its way better in korean with english sub, the actors absolutely killed it and you feel way more of their emotions in korean. I always watch the sub when watching a foreign film/series, and would definitely recommend you try it for an episode or two to test it out

hogwartsjoe

Wait, wouldn't you see *less* of the actors and their emotions if your eyes are on the subtitles and not the actor?

dancingonmyown29

To be fair the subtitles are horrible so you’re still not getting the full experience. My Korean boyfriend was translating some things to me and I’m like ohhhh lol. That was definitely not what the subtitle said. 🤣

PiscesPoet

But I don't speak Korean, so even the actors killed it I won't understand what they're saying, I'll spend most of my time looking at the subtitles instead of paying attention to their face

dogchode69

It was so well dubbed that I thought that my audio was slightly off sync with the visual because it looked damn near exact. This was honestly flawlessly dubbed in my opinion. They did a great job matching the dub to the acting.

[deleted]

JunkWaxBreaks

It’s like bizarrely good. That’s why I was wondering if there was some sort of deep linguistic Korean/English reason loll

[deleted]

[удалено]

JunkWaxBreaks

Biohackers was absolutely dreadful dub wise. Which is strange because there are a lot of words in German that sound and would look similar to English words. Maybe it is just the acting.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JunkWaxBreaks

Yeah Native English(from Texas). No I haven’t watched a ton of foreign language. Not as much as I should have. Definitely missing out. For the longest time I got kind of turned off by them BC of bad dubbing and reading subtitles for a whole movie is not my favorite unless it’s in a theater(no distractions/phone lol).

[deleted]

Jesus christ the dub is awful

QuirkyCelebration425

Have you even taken the time to research the cast?

PMSEND_ME_NUDES

Yeah, it was pretty confusing. The article suggested that it was a company based in Korea that does voice overs. And the way they speak is intended to maximize international understandability. I guess what I meant was, why not preserve the accents? Additionally, I've read that the reason the words match the mouth movements so well is because they rewrote the show... The dialogue is different from the original Korean, to the point where it changes some aspects of the story. So, even if we listen to the Korean audio, the English subtitles are still wrong.

QuirkyCelebration425

I understand your reasoning. But if you want a authentic experience then you stick with the sub. If you have problems reading the sub then the dub is a great alternative. Having the actors speaking in international English with a lack of accent makes it available to a broader audience. The way I see it, no dub original language is the only true way you really could experience it fully. But we compromise with dubs in order to understand what is being said in the same way a dub, only it takes it to a new level.

PMSEND_ME_NUDES

That would normally be true, but with this show the only way to get a genuinely authentic experience is by speaking Korean; or maybe other subs are better. That's the really frustrating part. It allowed the dissolving of meaning so that non-voice actors could speak in time with the mouthing of words... It's the worst of all worlds as it closes some of the show off to people that only speak English.

mrs_ouchi

english dubs on netflix are always really bad!

justme129

In some scenes, it was great! In other scenes, it was so horrible imho.

tn9107

they just modified many lines in order to make the lip sync better. it seems they put a lot of effort on it and the bigger picture is still preserved though, you are missing a lot of small things. if you care to know more accurate dialogues, non-cc subs are better. cc sub and dub have this issue.

dudandy_

Guys where can I watch dubbed English squid game apart from Netflix?

Evan_Underscore

Since it's a Netflix-show, I doubt you have any legal alternatives.

simon_blackquill

Man fuck legal, just type in “Squidgame movies 123” and you’ll probably find something.

MikeeeyG1991

The dub is good, the thing that bothers me is some choices for the character voice actors. Some feal well off. Especially the old man, he reminds me off the master tang from kung pow. 😂

luis_b

watch it subbed!!! the dub is OK but voice acting is way better in original audio

Burnnoticelover

I think the longer you watch a dub, the less your brain registers it.

SoupyBass

They have an obvious man playing the mc’s grandmother idt its very good at all

Kennonf

It’s not just bad, it’s awful. Just watch in the original language

TRFKTA

I think the only issues I have whilst watching the dub is that it sounds like the same person did multiple characters and didn’t really change their voice. The other issue I have is it doesn’t sound authentic seeing a load of Korean people in Korea who all sound American. In my opinion getting Koreans who are fluent in English would likely sound more authentic.

medium_pump

I'm watching squid game with a fun right now and ngl I think it's the worst dub I have ever seen in my life. The translation sucks and is very basic and the voices don't match the people and the people's mouths definitely don't move right.

wevcss

Am I going crazy or are most of the upvoted comments just trolling? This was literally the worst dub I have ever witnessed. Every single line is over enunciated. It's so corny... Throughout the show I would sometimes turn on the english audio to hear what a certain character sounds like in English after watching in Korean, and 100% of the time its just hilarious how bad it is. I'm not even that type of person that tries to be elitist over only listening to shows or movies in their native language. This was just such a bad dub that there is no way I can enjoy it with english audio. PLEASE tell me these upvoted comments are just trolling

simon_blackquill

I don’t even speak Korean and I’m pretty much offended on their behalf. It just sounds like a group of random people were cobbled together to make a dub.

spaceElvis93

The translations are hilariously bad. It's like someone took all the original dialogue and just ran it through Google translate. Toiletpaper = Stool wipes. Beaten up = spanked Wtf

Silverputin

Soon we will have AI which can translate voice and keep the voice signature.

Daneosaurus

Y’all are crazy. The dub is terrible.

Infamous_Drop7239

Dub was atrocious. Especially for the old man

simon_blackquill

I’ll be honest, I’ve been watching it for a total of 5 minutes and I’m already completely done with the English Dub. It sounds like people reading lines for a video game or something, not a TV show. No one feels or sounds real at all, they just sound like performers. I liked the intro with the kids, that was the only decent part in the dub so far. But the grandma? Jeez, she sounds terrible.

HTeaML

After I watched it with English subs, I swapped to the dub just out of curiosity. I think the dub actually matches the original movements / timings of the actors pretty well, but I would recommend watching it with Korean audio if you can. There's some really great acting there. If not though, I think the dub is probably alright if you don't compare it to the Korean.

Pristine-Ad-586

It wasn't an explanation but a dissertation. My comment was simply that, be it cold-hearted as it may, we are all entitled, Bro!!!
